Chapter 21 - Luna

It was early morning, the time of day where the sun was starting to creep from behind the edges of the hilltops. The many trees made it a bumpy relief. Dark against a warm mix of orange and yellow.

It wasn't necessarily cold, but Luna was happy to welcome the warm touches of the sun. It made the entrance of the cave less mortifying. Although the cavern gave her goosebumps all over, the golden double door was as majestic as the biggest cathedrals she had learned about in school.

The first rays of sunlight were almost shyly caressing the golden embroidery. The light fell in such an angle that it illuminated the centrepiece on the door - a shadowy entity rising from the fire, its arms stretched out like he was ravishing in the screams from the subjects on his feet, their bodies fading together with the hellish fire.

A shiver ran down Luna's body. Was she really going to break in the devil's place? She swallowed away the undeniable fear that was telling her to just go home and forget about that place. But she couldn't, not without knowing she did everything to save Vanessa. Luna had enough self-knowledge to know she would never forgive herself if she didn't at least try, no matter how crazy the plan was.

And how more insane could this place be than the adventure of falling in love? She snorted at her inner dialogue.

With a confident nod, she pushed herself up from the moisty ground, appearing from behind the ferns where she had been hiding. The skeleton ghost had led her here, before he had disappeared behind those doors. Now it was her turn to walk through those doors.

Before she entered, she wanted to text Thomas where she was. She could see the boy go crazy with worry, and that would only lead to the whole town knowing she was still alive. When she pulled out her phone, she saw the three missed calls and suddenly felt guilty for putting her phone on silent.

Call me! Things happened. Mykayla needs you.

She could try to call, see what's up, but then they would talk her out of this. She couldn't wait any longer, if she calculated correctly, the time until the next victim was near. She didn't want to be late. She hated being late, and she would not forgive herself if she was now. Mykayla had Thomas, she couldn't let this change go, Mykayla wouldn't want her to either.

So, instead she simply texted back the short version of her plan and her location. They would be her back-up.

She walked with silent footsteps towards the heavenly entrance. Luna moved her head almost in slow motion to the orange colouring sky. The door was gigantic. How did no one ever find this? It wasn't even that far from the town, and it was hard to miss.

She swallowed the lump that had formed inside her throat away before placing her very small looking hand against the metallic door. The gold was cold under her fingertips, where she felt her pulse throb. Luna declined her body and was ready to press with all her might against the heavy looking door when the door opened swiftly after barely putting any pressure against it. The classroom doors in school were heavier to open than this. Luna stumbled inside, not expecting it to be that easy. She scanned her surroundings quickly, ready to take on her opponent, but there was no one there.

She had expected darkness, an army, heavily guarded soldiers of hell, but all Luna saw was a tunnel lit by the flickering fire on the torches hanging on the walls. The ground and walls were carved out of black stone and Luna had to admit, she found it marvellous.

There wasn't anything threatening about the entrance, except perhaps the fact that there was only one way in or out. Still cautious, she walked further down the tunnel that led to an open place with a fountain in the middle. Luna would've inspected it in detail, if it wasn't for the two men standing on the other side. She kept herself in the shadows of the tunnel.

In front of another golden door on top of broad stairs, the skeleton ghost was standing with his back to her, his interlocutor was standing behind him, out of sight. She could hear his low rumble of a voice, and once in a while she saw dramatic hand gestures.

The mystery man turned around, showing Luna a glimpse of red before he walked inside, leaving the skeleton ghost behind. Her enemy's hands were angry fist, pressed against his sides. Luna saw his chest heave, like he was trying to calm himself before he followed the other man through the golden doors.

Not wanting to lose her only lead in this mystery house, she decided to follow them as closely as possible. She ran with her ballerina steps up the stairs. Careful not to run into any trouble, she stopped at the door and checked the inside.

For a single moment, she got distracted at the floating plate with fire at the entrance of yet another staircase. The inside of this place was just as majestic as the front door. Under the floating plates of fire, beautiful hanging plants dressed the stone banisters that ended in two baroque pillars at the foot of the stairs.

Luna could only imagine how lovely Vanessa would find all these aesthetically pleasing rooms. She remembered how much Vanessa wanted to go to the big city, just so she could see a real museum. It was something she never truly understood, but she loved the passionate fire in her girlfriend's eyes when she talked about it. So much so that she had saved some money for their one year anniversary, a date that had passed by like any other day these damned few weeks - alone and scared for Vanessa's life.

In her parents' mansion, the stairs had the same power presence. And like her childhood home, these were standing in the middle of a large hallway with multiple doors leading to multiple chambers of at least the same size as this one. The difference between this place and her childhood home was the lighting, where it was open and bright at home, here the foyer had no windows and the light came from humming light bulbs on the walls and the two plates of fire in the middle of the room. It would've caused for a warm atmosphere, if the orange and red weren't mashed with blue light coming from magical vines that broke through the walls.

The vines made Luna remember that she was indeed underground and not in some fancy museum on a date with Vanessa. She tried to shake the chilling feeling away, but it was hard with the unnatural blue shimmering everywhere.

A loud clattering made Luna jump up. A small yelp was covered by her own hand as she quickly ran forward towards one of the big vines that had almost broken the whole right wall open. She hoped the shadows of the vines would give her enough cover to not be detected by the loud newcomer.

"Master was clear about the dining settings," a cheerful voice echoed in the foyer. Over the sound of loud clattering, the man's French accent was audible.

In response, a wheezing sigh was heard. "It wasn't expected for mister Juan to join tonight, does that change sir Lucifer's specific plans?" A posh English woman spoke, she sounded older than the French man.

"Mistress has only little time," the rest of the sentence died out with the door getting slammed shut behind them.

Luna finally let her hand down, and drew a mouthful of air in. Lucifer did have an army, like Mykayla saw in her vision. He even had dining plans tonight. And who was Juan? Was that the name of the skeleton ghost? Probably. Who else arrived tonight? And who was this mistress? Questions were running through Luna's mind, only making her more nervous.

The voices had disappeared on the other side of the staircase, so the most logical option was to investigate this side of the house first. She faced the long empty hallway next to her hiding place. With incredible caution, she placed her feet on the ground and took one step at a time. The first few were taken so slow, she almost didn't move, but eventually, her steps got larger and more confident.

Her curiosity grew the more she followed the blue lit hallway that seemed to descend further into the earth. The ground was uneven and once in a while, Luna had to step over a vine that crossed to the other side. The deeper she got, the more vines joined her in the hallway and the more intense the blue inside the vines glowed. Where she previously wanted to take off her pullover because of the heat, the deeper the hallway led her into the earth the more she wished she had taken an extra jacket with her.

The path seemed endless. For ten long and silent minutes, she kept following the only direction she could go, until she heard voices in the distance and then it was as if she hadn't walked long enough. Luna caught herself missing the silence from before. Now that she was in hearing range, her breathing picked up and started to become uneven.

With her sweaty palms pressed against the cold moist walls, she moved step by step closer. Until she didn't dare to move closer.

"Do you believe that idiot?" A manly voice, resonating with incredible power, asked. It sounded similar to the mystery man from before.

Luna rubbed the goosebumps from her arms and tried to keep herself as quiet as possible.

"He has one job! One! And he fails. He crawls back with his tail between his legs, without the girl. How difficult could it be to get that Mykayla girl here? She was locked up for goodness sake."

The earth rattled under Luna's feet. Her hands covered her mouth too late for a squeal to escape. With big eyes of terror, Luna pressed her body hard against the wall. The unevenness from the stone pressed painfully against her spine. Both her hands were pressed in a lock grip against her mouth as she was trying not to breathe.

She listened to her surroundings. All was quiet.

She stayed in her position until she needed the air. With every muscle in her body tense and controlled so she wouldn't make a sound, she let her hand slide under her nose, so she could take a slow breath in. Not daring to move, she kept clinging to her mouth. She didn't trust herself anymore. She kept looking to her left, hoping to not see anyone appear.

But again, everything was quiet, and that made her even more nervous.

After a few minutes, she couldn't hold her curiosity in anymore, she leaned forward, hoping she could see something.

A dark shape jumped forward, making Luna stumble backwards, her back hitting the pointy wall behind her. The tunnel filled with a horrific scream. She clammed up in pain and dropped to the ground. Luna was staring into unnatural glowing dark blue ... holes. They weren't eyes, they were glowing holes in the place where eyes normally were.

The animal breathed out against her face, leaving a fishy smell behind. The charcoal cat-like animal sat still in front of her, watching her as if it waited for the girl to pet it - or for its master's sign to attack. Luna didn't dare to move, she simply kept staring at the cat's eyes. The longer she looked, the more intriguing she found them. They looked scary, but there was also a quiet peace in the blue burning flame.

"Incredible," the voice made the cat look up.

Luna sighed in relief when she felt herself being able to look away. She hadn't realized how hypnotizing those eyes had been. Once she shook the remains of the hypnosis off, she too looked up, and almost sighed in defeat that she was met with similar eyes as those of the cat.

"When I thought he couldn't be more of a screw-up, he led a civilian back to my house," the low voice from before grunted. It was a man with pitch black hair and godly eyes, dressed as a rich nobleman.

Was this Lucifer? He looked inhuman enough, and there was power cascading off of him.

Her throat suddenly got dry.

Luna whimpered. How did she get herself in a situation like this again? She really didn't have to come in here by herself. When was she going to learn not to do everything right away?

"What are you whimpering about?" Lucifer asked, annoyed. "I'm sure you were aware that you were breaking in and thereby breaking the law. Well, if it is because you think I'm going to kill you, don't worry about that. I don't like doing that more than it has to, and fortunately for you, you're not on my list."

Lucifer, dressed in a red satin button up and expensive Italian shoes, walked back where he came from. Luna on the other hand tried to slowly crawl back towards her side of the hallway. The hallway felt too long now that she was caught.

"If you think of running, don't. You can go when I'm done, I don't care. Just don't make my life harder than it already is."

The cat-like creature pushed with its nose against Luna's side in the direction of its master. Luna didn't even dare to try to run anymore, she would find a way to get out of this place. So she simply stood up and walked towards the man, with the black creature right behind her as her guard.

The narrow hallway turned into an open place underground where the vines seemed to come together. With the vines tangled up together and forming a dense rope-like creation in the middle of the room.

On the left side, three people were chained against the wall. She might've been in the most dangerous place on the planet, but all her worries faded when she saw her favourite pair of brown eyes. She smiled, brighter than she ever did. She knew because her jaw hurt from the effort. Vanessa on the other hand looked like she felt the terror Luna should be feeling right now.

The creature pushed against her legs, making her come back to reality. Lucifer politely held his hand as if to say 'please, take a seat' at a fancy dinner. Except, he showed her a place on the ground, next to the other kids, where they would await their death. Luna sat down - because really what else could she do? - and Lucifer put the same metallic chains around her wrists that the rest were wearing.

"Please, keep seated," he almost pleaded. "I'm not in the mood for more surprises. I too have a life and right now, everyone is messing with it."

Lucifer looked so very human - except for his eyes. He seemed annoyed and tired, and it made Luna wonder what could be the reason. Could it really be the skeleton ghost that messed up? Because that was an interesting development in an otherwise worsening situation.

"Now, stay quiet, because I assure you, no one will hear you scream. And in the end, you will simply annoy your friends next to you. I'm going to have a talk with my ghost," Lucifer babbled more to himself, than any of the kids.

"Mister Bones, come with me, or I will for sure rip that man's head off," Luna heard the man grunt while he walked further down the tunnel that kept going in the other direction that she came from.

Luna turned her body to the girl in the middle and smiled brightly once again. That was until her girlfriend responded not as happily as she thought their reunion would be.

"What the hell were you thinking?" She signed in angry movements, and even tried to speak the words out loud.

Luna simply curled her lips up in a guilty smile.
