Chapter 18
Alex's POV
I finished the chapter I was reading of War and Peace and closed the book. John was in his office painting I believe so I climbed out of bed and walked downstairs to the room. The place looked like a museum. Art was hung on the crisp white walls except for one. A family portrait had been painted and framed and Polaroids were hung everywhere, which made me smile every time I came in here.
"Hey darlin." John looked up at me from his desk and set his pencil down. He smiled.
"Hey. What are you drawing?" I asked as I stood behind his chair. He picked up the sketch book to show me a drawing of our kids. "John, this-this is beautiful." I said as I ran my hands over the paper.
"You like it?" I nodded. "I'm glad. You know, Phillip going to see a friend made me realize something. Our kids are growing up Alex. It's not long before they're in college." I sighed and rubbed his shoulders. He relaxed under my touch and leaned his head on my hand.
I sat on his lap and caressed his cheek before pecking his lips. "They're not leaving us anytime soon. I promise. Can we go get lunch somewhere? Just you, me, and Angelica?"
"I like the sound of that. How about you go tell Angelica to get ready while I wash the pencil off my hand." He kissed me and smiled. "I love you."
"I love you too. Now go wash up. I'll get Angelica." I walked back upstairs to the room next to mine with John on my feet. He entered our room while I entered my daughter's.
"Angelica, what are you doing?" I chuckled at the brush stuck in her hair.
"Dad." She whined. "Look how knotty my hair is. My hairbrush is stuck. Can you help me?" She tugged on the brush and whimpered in pain.
"Don't do that. You're only making it worse. Do you have detangler or do I need to get your father's?"
"I have my own bottle. It's right there." She pointed to a small green bottle on her vanity and I grabbed it. She seemed to find relief in the coldness of the spray as it hit her scalp. It took some time but the brush finally came out and I finished brushing her hair for her.
"You look beautiful. Go get dressed so we can go eat somewhere. I'll be waiting here." I sat on her bed as she disappeared into her closet. Moments later she came out wearing some jeans and a cardigan.
"This good?" I nodded and she went into her bathroom to apply makeup.
"Honey. You don't need makeup." She looked at me in the mirror as I peeked into the bathroom. "You look beautiful without it." She put the foundation down and applied a swipe of mascara.
"You're right. Not everyone can be a pretty and hot as me." She grinned. I laughed and another voice did as well.
"Darlin, you only look hot because of me. But you do look gorgeous right now. Are you ready to go?" She nodded and John ushered us to the car.
Angelica's POV
My Bluetooth hooked up to the car the moment I got it. My dad didn't mind since all I would listen to was musicals. She Used to be Mine came on and I started singing. Without me realising, my dad turned the music down. I continued to sing and once the song ended, my dad spoke up.
"I'm sending this to the familia." I groaned. "Yes to Usnavi and them." I groaned even more and blushed. He laughed and soon the car stopped.
"Come on crazies. We're here." My Father got out of the car and walked to the front of the restaurant.
We were greeted by the hostess and were led to our table. My parents slid into one side of the booth while I got the other to myself. I pulled out my menu started looking for what I wanted.
"Angelica, do you know what you want?" My dad asked. I nodded deciding on pasta. "Okay. So, how's school?"
"It's fine. Calculus is a bit hard. Nothing I can't handle though. Theater is fun, I get almost every solo." I shrugged. My dad's eyes widened.
"Angelica, we're so proud of you. That's amazing!"
"I'm sorry to interupt, can I take orders and drinks?" A young girl walked up to our table. We nodded and ordered everything and she left with a smile.
Alex's POV
"This is nice. I do kinda wish Phillip was here however." I sighed. John intertwined our fingers making me smile. Just as he did so, an woman passed by us. She looked at Angelica and then us.
"Oh sweetheart, you poor thing. It must be embarrassing being in public with these faggots of parents you have." She looked disgusted and I gripped John's hand tighter.
"No. I actually love them for being so brave. I like being out with them." I smiled at my daughter's words.
"I'm sure we'd be able to get you into a nice straight family. You deserve better." That's what broke her. Angelica started crying into her hands and John and I glared the lady off before changing sides of the booth.
She latched onto John as he rubbed her back and attempted to calm her down. Our waitress came back with our food and frowned at the situation. I told her everything that happened and she frowned again but nodded.
"I think I have something that will help." She disappeared into the back and came out with a tray of three cups of ice cream. "On the house. Boss said so."
"Thank you so much." Mental note: leave a huge tip. She smiled and left so I turned back to Angelica. "My dearest, it's okay. Your Father and I love you so much and if anything, you deserve nothing because you have a wonderful family who loves you. Don't listen to that homophobic bitch." I growled.
"Language Alex." John simply said as Angelica's sobs died down. He kissed her head and looked into her eyes, wiping away stray tears. "Are you alright now hon?"
"Y-yeah. Thanks guys. I love you."
"We love you too. Now, let's eat so we can get back home. I'm sure your brother will be back soon." She smiled and began eating. John leaned into my ear in order to whisper.
"Hey, I love you. And Angelica. Always know that." He gave my hand a squeeze and smiled faintly.
"I know. I love you too dork." Angelica snickered and looked at her phone. "Dear, what happened?"
"Philly's got a boyfriend!" She laughed. "After I told him not too." I raised an eyebrow at her.
"Who is it?"
"George Eacker." She said as she took a sip of her lemonade. "I'm not sure how I feel about him. He sometimes flirts with me but mostly flirts with Phillip." She shrugged. "I don't like him. Something feels...off about him."
"Oh wow. I want to meet this guy. He's my son's boyfriend. I should meet him." John looked at me with a look I knew all too well. "What?"
He chuckled. "Nothing. Eat." I sighed and rolled my eyes.
Phillip’s POV
I laughed as George and I walked around the city. I clung onto his arm and we held hands.
"How did I go so long without being with you? You're cute." He placed a kiss to my cheek making me blush. He brought his lips to my ear and nibbled on my earlobe. "You don't know half the things you do to me."
"You do things to me too." He smirked as he pulled away, satisfied with my response. "I like you a lot."
"I like you a lot too." I grinned and layed my head on his shoulder. "Phillip? Do you maybe wanna stay at my house tonight?" He scratched the back of his neck nervously.
"I mean, I'd have to ask my parents. Do you wanna meet my family?" I asked hesitant.
"Sure." I nodded and we walked to the subway station. As I went to use my card, he stopped me. "Let me pay. Please." I sighed and he smiled swiping his card.
"Are you nervous?" I asked as we rode back to my parents house.
"I mean, kinda. What if they don't like me?" I kissed his cheek.
"They'll love you, I promise." He nodded and we got off the train. We walked to my house and I stopped him in front of the door. "Ready?"
"As I'll ever be."
