Chapter 35

So I don't really know what is all considered a trigger, but I'm going to say ⚠️TRIGGER WARNING MENTIONS OF BULLYING⚠️

~Jonathan POV~

My poor little Thayne has to go by himself to the hospital. I come offstage after What Comes Next and he is already gone. Non-Stop starts. Henry comes up to me.

"I'm so sorry, I was focusing too much in my dancing and not enough on where my prop was swinging." He tells me.

"It's okay, Henry. It was an accident." I say quickly, brushing him away and running to get any information regarding how Thayne was doing when he left. I find Carleigh and she tells me Thayne was doing okay and that I am supposed to meet Thayne at the hospital after I am done with the show, but she said that he said that it is up to me about stagedooring. Then they make an announcement.

"Pardon the interruption, but due to cast injury, Thayne Jasperson will be swung out for the rest of the show. Jordan Fuller will be swung on in his place. Once again, Thayne Jasperson will be swung out for the rest of the show, with Jordan Fuller in his place. Thank you." The loudspeaker says. Then Non-Stop starts. I'm not on during this song, so I just pace back and forth backstage. I decide to call Thayne because I'm not on for a while. He picks up on the second ring.

"Thayne?"

"Jon?"

"Yeah it's me. Are you at the hospital yet? How are you?"

"The taxi is just pulling up. My ear hurts a lot but other than that I am fine."

"Okay. Go check in. I will mute myself while you do it." I tell him. I hit mute. He didn't mute his, I'm guessing so I can hear everything. I hear the car door shut and him pay the driver through the phone. Then, I hear a lady's voice.

"How may I help you?" The voice asks. I hear Thayne speak.

"I was hit in the ear with a prop. It was bandaged up shortly after, but our first aid personnel told me to come here." He explains. He's so calm and collected.

"Alright. What is you name?" The lady asks.

"Thayne Jasperson." I hear him reply.

"Emergency contact?"

"Jonathan Groff. xxx-xxxx." I hear him say.

"Significant other?" She asks. Uh oh. Thayne is very vulnerable when talking about his sexuality. He was bullied as a child for loving to dance. He was called a sissy and called gay. He is kind of fragile sometimes. He doesn't say anything right away, probably because he is hesitating. Then he starts to talk.

"Uh, still Jonathan Groff." He says, a little quieter.

"Alrighty then. Don't worry, I'm gay too. You don't have to be shy. My girlfriend and I recently got engaged." The lady says.

"Congratulations! Me and Jonathan just got engaged as well." He says, and I can tell he is smiling.

"Thank you and congratulations to you too." The lady says.

"Thank you." Thayne says politely.

"I have a few more questions for you." She says. "Were you hurt on the job?"

"Yes."

"What is your profession and where do you work?" She asks him.

"I'm an actor and dancer. I work at the Richard Rodgers theater. I am in the ensemble for Hamilton: An American Musical." He tells her.

"One of my good friends went and saw it a couple days ago. She said it was unlike anything she'd ever seen and that it was amazing." I hear the lady say. I smile. It makes my day when people really genuinely mean that they love the thing that we have put so much time and work into. I hear Thayne laugh and say thank you. She tells Thayne about the 'urgency rule.' The urgency rule is how they determine the order of the patient's treatment importance. She tells him his estimated wait time is 3-5 hours. "Sorry. We have a lot of people who are super urgent, and only a couple ER doctors." She says. She asks about Thayne's insurance and all that jazz before telling him to go sit down and wait to be called back.

"You still there?" Thayne asks me through the phone. I unmute myself.

"Yeah. I heard it all. 3-5 hours! I'll be there as soon as the show is over, I promise. You poor thing. How bad does your ear hurt?" I ask.

"About a 9.5 on the 1-10 scale." He says.

"I'm so sorry I can't be there right now. Non-Stop just ended, so now it is intermission. I'm not stagedooring so I will be there as soon as the show is over. I promise." I say through the phone. "Are you tired sweetheart?" I ask him.

"I'm tired I guess. It's not your fault that you can't be here. You have to do the show. All that is left is an hour and a half of act two. You'll be here before I even get called back, especially if you're not stagedooring, okay Jon. I have a long wait time, so I will probably take a nap. Okay? Jonny, don't blame yourself." Thayne tells me. I sigh.

"If you say so. How did this happen?" I ask him, realizing I hadn't thought of asking him before.

"During Yorktown, the new swing, Henry, accidentally hit me with his musket prop. My ear just started bleeding. Some blood got on my costume, but I was mainly worried because my ear hurt so bad I could barely focus and keep and unscrunched face. It was the hardest performance I've ever done in my life. After the song ended, I ran off and Tommy had been in the audience and noticed my injury. They had medical all ready for me. They started bandaging my ear-and that was probably the worst part because they had to touch it. You saw how bad it was, but I didn't. It was horrible when they touched it to put the bandages on. I felt like my ear was going to fall off. It still hurts a lot even with the bandages on." Thayne me explains.

"Aww sweetheart. Intermission is ending, so a half an hour, okay?" I say.

"Alright Jonny. Alright..." he says, his voice getting quieter and quieter.

"Thayne? Thayne are you okay?" I ask frantically. No answer. "Thayne, sweetheart?" I ask again. Still nothing. I sat there on the line with him until I had to go on again. When I had to go on I left my phone with Jasmine, who had woken up, so she could hear anything that happened. The show went on and I was super on edge. During Burn, Lin sat down next to me.

"Hey, what's wrong? Other than Thayne's ear? You seem a little more on edge." He says.

"I was on the phone with Thayne. We were talking and then his voice got quieter and quieter and then he stopped responding to me." I say, my voice a little shaky. Lin's jaw drops and he puts a hand on my shoulder.

"Jon, we will get you out of here as soon as possible. I will personally make sure you get to your car quickly. (Quick note: idk really remember what time of year it currently is because I'm kind of all over the place time wise. So imma make it winter, because I know it was September like 18 chapters ago) I know there won't be many people stagedooring because it is cold and snowing a lot, and traffic by our stage door is crazy today because of the snowstorm. So I'll take you to your car through the front. If you want to leave we can throw somebody on in your track for you. You should really find out what's wrong." Lin tells me.

"The show is almost over. I'm not on again until bows. Jasmine has my phone near her in case he says something or someone else says something. I might call the hospital to get somebody to check on him though. I'll stick it out. Thank you though. You're on soon, Lin." I tell him. He pats my shoulder again, standing up.

"I'm sure he's fine, Jonathan." He tells me before going to his spot. I just sit tight and wait for bows to come.
