Chapter 18

~Ant POV~

We get to Alexander's rap part. I nod to the creative team and Lin. Lin stops singing and he and Pip, and everyone else, run quietly into the audience. Jas is staring into my eyes as I start to sing Alexander's part. Everyone knows what I'm going to do. We had planned for this rehearsal to be the one a long time ago. They all left the stage so quietly that Jas didn't notice. She's very focused on my eyes. Soon enough, as I'm finishing, she breaks her stare and glances around. Only now does she see we're alone on stage. Whilst she's having an eye conversation with Pip and Renée, I drop to one knee. She's turned around so she doesn't see. Suddenly everyone shouts.

"JAS TURN AROUND!" She spins on her heel. When she sees me, her hand immediately goes to cover her mouth as tears start to fall down her cheeks.

"Jasmine Cephas Jones. I love you so much, I honestly can't express it. You are truly the best thing to ever happen to me. I can't imagine life without you, and I don't want to. Will you marry me?"

"Yes!! I love you so much Anthony!!" I grin, slide the ring in her finger and jump up to my feet. Jas and I share a passionate kiss as the cast and crew erupt in cheers. I love this woman.

~Jas POV~

I love this man so much. I just got engaged! It was adorable! The ring is elegant and beautiful but not super over-the-top. A simple, silver band runs around my finger, and a beautiful diamond shimmers in the middle. After Ant and I separate, I get tackled by Pippa and Renée. Ant gets tackled by Lin, Leslie, Oak, Daveed, Chris, Jon, Thayne. About half an hour later, we start rehearsal again. We do have a show tonight, after all.

~Ant POV~

We are in the middle of a show. I'm waiting in the wings to go on for Farmer Refuted. Jas is on for Schuyler Sisters. They are doing AMAZING! I notice some set piece moving toward Jas while she is dancing, but think nothing of it. I'm chatting quietly with Oak and Daveed, my back to the stage, when I hear a loud crash and Daveed and Oak look shocked. I turn around. I see the set piece on top of Jasmine. On top of her! It fell onto her! She cries out and Pip and Renée run over to her. Screw the rule of staying in the wings until your cue. My fiancée just got crushed by the set!! I run out and kneel next to her. Her entire leg is wedged under the set piece. People (cast and crew) are working to get her out from under the set. Jas is very pale and she is crying. I can tell she's in a lot of pain. I grab her hand. She looks at me, a mix of pain and terror in her eyes. She's going to beat herself up over the fact that she stopped a show. They announce that they are going to lift and we are going to pull her out.

"Jas, baby, this might hurt. But it will get you out so we can get you to a hospital. Okay?" I ask. She nods hesitantly. We pull her out-all the way-at once. She screams in pain and grips my hand. Jas is now free of the set. Her ankle is bruised and swelling. Her knee is bent the complete wrong direction and is swollen. It's a nasty purple color due to bruises. Jazzy tries to move her leg, but she can't. She whimpers in pain. I squeeze her hand tightly and kiss her forehead. I cant stand seeing her like this. I attempt to calm her down, to no avail. I see a commotion in the wings as people usher Lillian to a dressing room from where she was sitting, watching the show. I turn my head to find Pippa or Renée and realize that the curtain is open and the audience see in their seats, watching. Someone yells.

"Close the curtains!!" It was Lin. He was helping stand the set back up, along with a bunch of the guys. Thayne leaves them and runs to close the curtains. Once he does, I hear the commotion of people leaving the theater. Jasmine cries out again and I quickly turn my attention back to her. I wave Pip and Renée over. I lift Jas up, minding her knee. I carry her up to the Schuyler Sisters dressing room. Pip and Renée are going to help her change. While they do that, I go to my dressing room and change. Once I finish, I grab all my stuff and head back to the girls' room. I knock and they let me in. I pick Jas up gently and carry her to our car. I carefully lay her in the backseat and we head to the ER. Once she is buckled, I start driving. She's still crying and in pain. We arrive and I park the car. I climb into the back next to her. She unbuckles and I pull her, very carefully, onto my lap.

"Shhh, baby girl. It's going to be okay. I know it hurts. Don't worry. I'm going to stay right here with you. I love you. Everything is going to be okay." I tell her as she lets out another couple whimpers. She looks up at me, eyes full of pain and fear.

"It's my knee, Ant. Something is really wrong with it. I can tell. I'm such a klutz. None of this would have happened if it weren't for me. Lin's going to fire me for screwing up the show. You're going to leave me because I can't walk. And-"

"Jasmine, first off, I would never leave you. I love you. Secondly, Lin isn't going to fire you. None of this was your fault. You were in the right spot. The set wasn't. It wasn't your fault it fell over. And so what if you can't walk? I will carry you everywhere if I have to. And if something really is wrong, we will figure it out. Okay? You don't need to worry."

"I love you." She says. I pick her up and we walk inside. I tell the lady at the front desk our situation, still holding Jas. Her arms are tight around my neck as I clutch her close, wishing I could take her pain away. The lady leads us to an examination room to wait. Jazzy's leg is looking worse by the second. Her knee is now visibly throbbing. She's very pale and all the color has drained from her lips. I sit down in one of the chairs. There's a doctor table thingy in the middle of the room, but Jas wants to stay near me. I kiss her forehead lightly. After about 20 minutes of silence with occasional whimpers from Jas, a doctor walks in.

"I was informed of your situation. I'm going to take a look at your ankle and knee, and maybe do an MRI." He says. I lay Jasmine down on the table thingy now, but I keep hold of her hand. He does all the normal doctor stuff, heartbeat, blood pressure, etc.. Then he gets to her knee and ankle. He starts with her ankle. He looks at it and gently picks it up. When he picks it up Jas squeezes my hand. "Your ankle is badly sprained, so we'll give you an ankle brace and crutches. Now I'll take a look at your knee." He says. He looks at her knee for a while, just looking at the position. He picks up her knee, making her whimper lightly. I squeeze her hand three times. She squeezes mine back, three times. "Okay Jasmine, this might hurt a little, but I need to do it to assess what is wrong." He says gently. Then he places his thumb and finger on opposite sides of her knee and squeezes lightly, making her yelp in pain. He writes some stuff down. "Okay, we are going to do an MRI." I squeeze her hand three more times before they take her back for the MRI. An hour and a half later, they bring her back in. She looks exhausted and in pain. I wish I could take her pain away. "According to our MRI and the amount of pain Jasmine is in, there is a bad tear to her ACL. She's going to need surgery to get it corrected. She will also need to be off work for about 6 months. What does she do for a job?" He asks.

"She's an actress on Broadway." I reply.

"Okay well, I can write a note to a director or something...?"

"No, the man in charge is a good friend. He will be fine with it."

"Okay. She will need to wear a knee brace. She's already on crutches because of her ankle, and she would need to be for her knee as well. Her surgery is scheduled a week from now." He hands us a sheet. "This has more details about the surgery. Afterwards, we'll do physical therapy and check in on her knee multiple times." With that, he discharges Jas. We put her braces on her knee and ankle. I pick her up again and carry her and her crutches to the car. I lay her in the backseat and she starts to cry again. It's been a long, hard, painful night for her.

"Baby girl, what's wrong?"

"I've never had surgery before." She says, her voice laced with exhaustion, fear, pain, and worry.

"It will be okay. I'll wait there, I promise. Now, let's get you home so you can get some rest." I say and we drive home.
