~13~

I woke up the next morning, a pounding headache overriding most of my thoughts. Welp, they've noticed I'm gone. My phone showed it to be 9, which meant I had maybe an hour before they had Thomas summon me. Unless they realize Thomas is fine. Then they might just leave me be. After all, why care if it's not affecting him?

At that moment, a wave of extreme anxiety hit, and I knew it could only mean one thing. They're in my room.

There was no real reason to worry, but just the thought of them in there made me anxious. I only wished I knew what they were thinking. Patton's worried face appeared, followed by Roman's. It caused me to sink to the ground, leaning against the bed as I wrapped my arms tightly around myself, using all my strength not to dig.

Roman's POV

I woke up that morning, heading quickly to the bathroom to shower and such. As I was brushing my teeth, however, I started to think about my quarrel with Anxiety the other day. I was aware of how harsh my words had been, as well as the shunning I've enacted since then. Well, you did talk to him at breakfast yesterday. I smiled as much as I could with the toothbrush. Despite me being angry, I had gotten a weird feeling when I thought about him making breakfast for all of us. I was a little disappointed when he said Patton made it.

Thinking back, I realized it had been three days since the original altercation. It was time to apologize. After I get ready, of course.

20 minutes later, I stepped out with my hair done and in my normal outfit. I headed to the kitchen first, thinking he might be at breakfast. When I exited the hallway, however, only Patton and Logan sat at the table.

"Hey Roman! I was only in the mood for cereal today, and Logan just got some toast. So you're on your own for breakfast, but there's plenty to choose from."

"Thanks Pat." I said, heading to grab a yogurt from the fridge. "Hey, has Virgil come out already?"

"Not yet. Why?" he asked, and I saw his protective side start to come out a little bit.

"Relax, I want to apologize. It was very un-princely of me, and I feel the need to say I'm sorry."

"Oh. good." he said, immediately perking back up.

I took my yogurt back to my room, setting it on the dresser after a few bites. As I've never been the best with apologies, I decided to practice a bit as to what I might say. I paced back and forth, trying to find the right wording as I took occasional spoonfuls from the container. When the yogurt was all gone, I exited, turning right towards Virgil's room. I stopped at his door, the one furthest down the hallway. Even his door was a dark wood; it made me kinda chuckle. I knocked sharply, waiting for the door to open, or at least a groan of acknowledgement. When none came, I concluded that he probably had his headphones on.

"Anxiety?" I called through, knocking once more. When it was still silent on the other side of the door, I realized he may be ignoring me as I had done to him recently. "Listen, I just want to apologize. I have a whole speech planned out, so if you could open the door, I'd appreciate it." Nothing. "Alright, Virgil, I'm going to come in. Say something if you don't want me to." After 10 seconds of pure silence, I turned the handle and opened the door.

The room seemed a little disturbed, but the owner was nowhere in sight. Perhaps he's outside? He's always enjoyed the outdoors almost as much as his room. I headed out, being sure to shut the door behind me.

Once back in the living room, I saw both Patton and Logan gone. Hopping over the couch, I slid the door open, taking in the breeze. It annoyed me slightly, seeing as I'd have to redo my hair when I got inside. Still, I pushed through in hopes of finding him.

After checking the garden hedge maze, I came out the other side near the more overgrown part of the yard. Knowing he enjoys to climb in the trees, I walked through looking up the entire time.

After 20 minutes, it was clear he wasn't up in the trees. Heading inside, I saw Patton standing in the kitchen.

"Hey Patton, have you seen Virgil at all? I can't find him anywhere."

"Have you checked his room?" he asked, worry creeping into his expression.

"Yeah, I went there first."

"Alright, well maybe you check there again.I'll go get Logan, see if he knows anything, okay?"

"Okay, okay." I said, trying to keep from freaking out. Staying as calm as I could, I made my way back down the hallway. I knocked quickly, entering without waiting for a response.

There was still no one there, so I decided to look around. Noticing a drawer slightly open, I pulled it all the way out. Please don't kill me for this, Virge. There were only two shirts inside, the rest of the space empty. Confused, I pulled open the one right underneath it. This drawer was completely empty, and the emergency charger he kept there was missing. I was getting very worried now.

"Um, guys!" I shouted, looking at the empty drawer. "Get in here!"

Patton dragged a flustered looking Logan in, waiting for me to reveal why I had called. Logan straightened his necktie, trying to regain his formal appearance.

"So, um..." I started, trying to keep calm, seeing as I was the prince. "Half of Virgil's drawers were completely empty, and his emergency charger is missing, as well as all the electronic stuff now that I look around.

Logan pushed up his glasses, walking around the room, seeming to inspect it more closely. Patton just pushed past me, walking over to the vanity. He opened the empty drawer, and closed it again and again; seemingly hoping they would reappear if he just looked enough times. I backed up, finding myself pressed against the wall. Still, my eyes had little focus on anything. He's gone. You finally did it. It's not even like last time, where you could just come in here and talk to him. You pushed him so much, he couldn't even be in the same place as you. Or he did what you told him. Don't you remember? I'd be better off never seeing you again. He just did what you said was best.

My eyes then focused on what was ahead of me. The Nightmare Before Christmas posters. They seemed to be the only thing in the room not covered in cobwebs, as if he out extra effort in keeping them clear. You have messed everything up, Roman.

"Well" Logan said, pulling me out of my daze. "Virgil does indeed seem to be gone. However, Thomas doesn't seem to be affected. I will go check on him to see if Anxiety has, in fact, ducked out."

"Quack"

Logan sighed, then continued. "You two might try searching for clues as to where he might have gone off to." With that, he sunk down, leaving me and Patton alone in the emo's room.

"Do you think he's... gone, Pat?"

Patton gave me a look of shock for a second, eventually turning to me in a comforting manner.

"Of course not, kiddo. He probably just... needed some time. I'm sure he's just out there in the backyard or something. Chances are he'll be back before you know it."

Despite his smile, I saw the pain and worry behind it, and I felt like crumpling. Here I was, the big prince, and I was being consoled. Not only did I cause the problem, but I couldn't even be strong enough to help him. I'm no prince.

"Well, Thomas is still doing fine, so he's still doing his job at least." Logan said, appearing suddenly, causing me to jump.

"Then where is he?" Patton asked, glancing hopefully at Logan.

"I'm unsure, but we can take some comfort knowing he's still in the mindscape."

"Well yeah, you can't exactly leave, calculator watch." I said, snarky due to the situation.

"On the contrary." he replied, turning to me. "There is, in fact, a door that leads to outside the mind and allows us to walk around in the real world as if normal people. I am unaware of its location however, or how we would access it."

"Wait, so you're telling me there's a chance Virgil isn't even in the mind anymore?"

"No, he's still here. When a side leaves, Tomas no longer feels their presence. Say, when Sleep leaves, he cannot attain his proper rest. It's the same with any of us."

"So Virgil is still in the mind at least." Patton chimed in, that small amount of hope clear in his voice.

"Yeah, Pat, but do you realize how big this place is? I mean, we've never even been able to find the dark sides living space. And trust me, I've looked."

"Why have you attempted to locate them?" Logan asked curiously.

"Well, my brother's over there. Though Remus is not pleasant, we still have to talk from time to time. But since I have no idea where he stays, we always have to meet in my room. Let me tell you, him in there is always a disaster."

"Hm, well, I'll start examining maps of the mind, locating potential places Virgil might have gone to. While I'm working on that, you two should resume your daily work." I opened my mouth to protest, but he cut me off. "There's not much for you to contribute as of now. The best thing is to keep Thomas running well. Besides, focusing on something else will allow you to forget about Anxiety's absence, and relieve some stress."

I sighed. It wasn't what I wanted, but it was the best course of action. Besides, Patton looked on the verge of tears, and I wanted to be strong for him now, seeing as I lost it earlier. It's not every day he loses his 'son'.

"Okay" I said. I wrapped my arm around Patton's shoulder, feeling him immediately lean on me. Logan grimaced at that, but I was unsure as for the reason, nor did I care. "Get to it, Logan. I don't want him gone for too long." I pulled the moral side out, telling how fatigued he was as he dragged his steps.

"You okay, Pat?" I said, looking over to him.

"This is my fault." he said, sinking a little. "I- I tried to be there for him, but I clearly didn't do enough. He left, and it's because of me, and... I should have protected him!" He shouted that last part, falling against the wall, his face in his lap. A small sob escaped, and I immediately moved in front of him.

"Morality, if Logan was here right now, he'd tell you how illogical you sounded." His eyes peeked out, and I took it as a queue to speak. "This was on me. I made Virgil feel unwanted. You did everything you could. I was the one who messed up this time. But trust me, we're gonna get him back, okay? Like you said, he'll be back. And besides, we have Logan working on finding him. Everything will be fine, okay?" He nodded at me, a slight mile flashing for just a second. "Come on" I said, opening his room door and helping him up. "Get some rest, okay? I know it's only like 9:15, but just relax. We'll handle everything." He walked in his room, going to shut the door. "Thanks, Roman" he said, a small gap still there.

"Of course." With that, the door closed, and I immediately felt my facial features fall. I had barely held it together long enough to help Patton. Now, my own thoughts were coming back. I headed to my own room, sighing as the door swung shut. Even the back of the room made me sad.

The dull wood had bothered me, so I covered it in countless drawings. Every one had the 4 of us placed in iconic Disney movies. Looking around the entirety of the space, I saw just how many artworks contained or were inspired by Virgil. I had never truly realized how big a role he played in my own creativity. I walked over to the desk, grabbing a clean sheet of paper. I sketched a rough outline of his emblem, coloring the background black. I added a few white lines, looking like stitches. Throwing a small patch of the purple flannel to an edge, I then concentrated on the emblem. I drew every line, adding small details. When I finished, I took a closer look. The sun from my own patch had been worked into the cloud form, along with the wave pattern. Without even meaning to, I had added my own symbol to his.

I need you, Anxiety. Where are you?
