-Keefe Lover
Keefe Sencen woke to a pillow being chucked at his head. He groaned and threw it back at his friend, who, of course, had another pillow ready.
"Keefe," His friend, Fitz, said, "Your first class starts in fifteen minutes."
Keefe, like normal, responded with, "I'm ditching. Just because you're such a good student, Fitzy, doesn't mean everyone else is!" Fitz rolled his eyes and raised his hands in defeat.
"Don't come crying to me when you don't graduate," Fitz said bluntly. "What are your grades anyway? They can't be that good if you only go when there's a test and you just have random girls bring your assignments to and from class."
"Straight A's, in everything."
"How?"
"Photographic memory, remember? Sorry that you have to work hard to do well! The only thing that I work hard at is The Hair." Keefe was obsessed with his hair and had even deemed it a proper noun: The Hair.
Fitz, deciding he had had enough of his friend, laced his shoes, grabbed a bagel, and left the room. With his friend gone, Keefe was free to go back to sleep. He stretched out on his bed and decided that maybe he wouldn't go to any classes at all today.
Keefe woke the second time to a scream. He launched out of bed, pulled on shoes and a jacket and ran out of his room. Another yell lead him to a door a few hallways over that had smoke pouring under the door. The floor shook, and the cries from the other side of the door increased. Keefe knew he had to do something to help the person on the other side of the door- who was obviously in excruciating pain and agony.
He tried the lock but the door wouldn't budge. Smoke continued to seep from the door and the wails finally went silent. Keefe gulped and continued to try to open the door. The lock had only been bent slightly so with enough pushing, Keefe was able to open the door.
The sight that awaited him brought bile up his throat. Flames engulfed the kitchen area of the room and a frail girl lay by the door. She was burned everywhere and one of her ankles was bent at an odd angle. She looked as if she had passed out from the smoke. Keefe reached her and delicately picked her up. Keefe was careful not to put too much pressure on her burns as he carried her out of the burning room and into the hallway. Although the blonde girl was obviously hurt, more pain could come to others if he didn't put the fire out before it spread. Keefe reluctantly left the girl in the hallway, wondering how long it would be until she woke up.
He dashed back into the dorm room and used pots and water from the sink to put it out. It took Keefe a good hour, and by the time he was done, he had a fair share of burns as well. Luckily the fire wasn't too powerful and once its source had died out, it was easy to put out.
Back in the hallway, the girl had come to and was staring blankly at the wall across from her. When Keefe walked out of the room, she carefully turned her head to look at him. All of her skin was raw and she was covered in soot from what had burned around her.
Laying on her neck was a necklace carved with intricate letters that read Sophie. Keefe took note of the charm and decided it was safe to assume it was her name. The girl stared at him quietly, waiting for him to say something.
"I am sure the healing center is full of other kids who were hurt in the earthquake. Do you want me to take you back to my room? I have a large supply of healing cream and other medical stuff," Keefe said quietly. Sophie nodded thankfully with pain evident in her eyes.
"Can you walk?" Sophie shook her head no and pointed to her swollen ankle. "Oh, right, okay. I'm going to carry you if that's alright." Sophie blushed, but she nodded yes.
He scooped her up bridal style and she shyly wrapped her arms around his neck to ensure that she wouldn't fall. Keefe could tell that she was surprised by his strength, but she wasn't very heavy. He carried her back through the abandoned hallways to his room where he delicately laid her on one of his spare beds.
Sophie's eyes widened at the size of Keefe's room, and Keefe smirked at how surprised she was. From the way she had acted and the way she dressed, Keefe assumed she wasn't very social and was most likely more of a nerd. He had never seen her before and assumed she was probably new.
Keefe's dad was very rich, and he showered and tried to spoil Keefe with the money. The gifts didn't mean anything to Keefe because it didn't make up for the absence of his father in his life. His father only cared for fame and power, Keefe hated that his dad couldn't just be a dad. Cassius Sencen was the head of a large law firm and had made millions- and still was. He had also recently been elected as mayor and was even less of a presence in Keefe's life because of it.
Keefe gathered burn cream, bandages, and a pain reliever pill. He offered Sophie the pill and she took it gratefully.
As he began to unwrap the bandage, Keefe realized that he had no idea how to use any of the health tools he had brought over. He hoped that Sophie had no idea as well and that he would be able to fake it pretty well. Of course, all that resulted in was Keefe being covered head to toe in sticky bandages. Although oddly, he felt like it was worth it because Sophie smirked at the mess he was in.
She held her hand out as if to ask him to give her the bandages. Although she was burned everywhere and winced at every movement, Sophie succeeded in applying soothing cream and bandages to both her and Keefe's burns.
After a little while, Sophie dozed off. Ever so often she would snore a little, and Keefe found himself staring at her like he was a stalker. For some reason he really wanted her to wake up so they could talk. Besides, he really wanted to hear her voice.
When she woke up again, Keefe had built up the nerve to start a conversation. As her eyes opened and took in the room she was currently situated in for a second time, Keefe studied her every movement, wanting to capture them in his brain. Her eyes finally landed on Keefe and she smiled shyly at him as if remembering what he had done to help her.
"So, it's Sophie, right?" Keefe asked, wanting clarity once more. Sophie nodded and opened her mouth as if to say something- but nothing came out. She coughed, attempted to clear her throat, and tried again. This time she descended into a coughing fit but held her hand out to stop Keefe from helping her. When the coughing died down and Sophie had taken her hands away from her face, Keefe saw that her eyes had widened and she looked extremely scared.
"What's wrong?" Sophie pointed to her mouth, shook her head, and then mimed writing something out. Keefe understood what she was asking and quickly fetched her a pen and a sketchpad he had been doodling in earlier that morning. Sophie opened to a random page and her eyes widened at Keefe's skills and intricately drawn figures. Before she could look at any more drawings, Keefe snatched the notebook away and turned to a blank page, his eyes pleading that he was shy about his art and that she wouldn't look at any more pieces.
Sophie understood and Keefe watched her hold the pen with trembling hands, then she wrote:
The fire did something to my vocal cords and lungs.
She looked up and Keefe, eyes full of worry. Keefe hesitantly looked over her shoulder to see what she wrote next. His heart stopped when he read what she had written with her small, burned hands.
I can't talk
And it might get worse.
Sophie stared at Keefe for a moment, her eyes full of worry. Keefe was known for joking around at the wrong times but now felt like a time where the girl in front of him could use a little lightening up.
"You seem pretty upset, you must really love talking!" Sophie smiled at him and Keefe was immediately glad he had said something. He was glad that he had seen her and helped her, maybe they would become friends. He was about to ask her some more questions when the door burst open.
In walked a boy whose concerned teal eyes suddenly flashed with recognition, "Sophie?"
