Chapter Twenty
a/n: Merry Christmas Eve. Today would be my Grumpy's birthday if he hadn't died almost two months ago... It's hard to believe it's been so long since that happened. It feels like just yesterday I was posting the note saying he was gone.
Anyways, away from my mushy heart.
Chapter question is do you celebrate anything this time of year?
Obviously, I celebrate Christmas. *squeals* can't wait.
estimate only ten or fifteen chapters left, somewhere in between. It may seem like a lot but remember I basically update like... everyday. So this book is only going to last for another week and a half or two.
There will most likely be no update tomorrow unless I'm really not busy.
not reread or edited.
"Come on, there's got to be something we can do to get the gender out of you," Sophie said, frowning. "Give in to us, please!"
"We're not going to tell you Sophie," Fitz said, shaking his head.
"What if I want to get said baby a present for when it's born. I need to know the gender for that," Sophie said, almost begging.
Ashla shook her head. "It's not happening."
Sophie huffed. "You guys aren't my friends anymore."
"We love you too, Sophie," Ashla said, laughing lightly. Sophie just looked away from them, pretending to tear up. "Aww, don't be like that," Ashla fake cooed. She went up to Sophie on the couch and wrapped her arms around her. "Sooooooooophie."
"Nope. I'm not talking to you."
"Sooooooooophie," Ashla dragged on, holding her closer. "Please love me again."
A small smile appeared on Sophie's face but she tried to hold it back. "I just want to be a good godmother and know the gender," she said, frowning.
"Wait, how come you're the Godmother? What about me?" Biana asked from her seat on the other side of the couch where she was sitting with Dex.
"Hey, you're Aunt by default. I'm the godmother," Sophie said, pointing to make her point.
Ashla laughed and finally let go of Sophie. She went back to her seat next to Fitz. "But seriously, we're not telling you guys the gender."
"How about you tell us one of the names your think of giving he or she?" Sophie said, smiling.
"Given the chance the baby is a boy, we picked the names Davion and Apollo," Fitz said.
Sophie's eyes widened. "It's a boy?"
"Given the chances our baby is a girl," Ashla said, narrowing her eyes, "we've narrowed it down to Callia and Cambria."
"Those are some really good ideas," Keefe said, smiling.
Sophie glared at him. "Who's side are you on?"
His eyes widened. "All I did was say that the kid won't go through school getting bullied for her name," he said, holding his arms up in defense.
"Keefe!" Ashla shouted. "You gave it away!"
"Her? As in, that's the gender, her?" Sophie looked at Ashla. "You told him?"
"He was there when we found out," Fitz said. "We swore him to secrecy."
Sophie's jaw dropped and she turned to Keefe. She slapped his arm.
"Ow! Hey, I was sworn to secrecy. I couldn't tell you," he said, frowning while rubbing his arm.
"That's it, I'm never talking to any of you guys ever again," Sophie said. "I was the last to find out about the pregnancy. That should have earned me some points on the learning the gender scale," she said, frowning. Everyone just stared at her and after a while her face broke into a grin. "But I'm so happy that you guys are having a girl!" She finally shouted.
Everyone joined in the excited shouting and Ashla was being squished into one giant group hug. "If any of you guys break my stomach or the baby I will murder you all," she said from within the large group. Everyone immediately pulled back.
"I'm going to have a niece!" Biana shouted in excitement. She hugged Fitz really tight. "Thank you for getting married and not waiting to have children unlike dumb and dumber over there," she said qith a squeal.
"Hey, we don't want to base our entire relationship on having kids," Sophie said with a scowl.
Biana shook her head. "Oh honey, no one cares. We just want you two to have babies already," she said.
Sophie rolled her eyes and Ashla broke into laughter. Everyone turned to look at her. "You said two to. . . And that made me think, can you say two, to, and too in the same sentence right next to each other."
"That's not really funny," Sophie said, frowning.
"No, but my attempt in my mind was," Ashla said, laughing even harder.
Fitz wrapped an arm around her waist. "She's a special one," he said, kissing her temple.
"Oh you hush," Ashla said, swatting him away. "So, food sound good?"
___
"I still can't believe you kept it from me for so long," Sophie remarked, glaring at the air.
"I was sworn to secrecy. I wanted to tell you but I was afraid Ashla would strangle me."
"I could strangle you without touching you right now and really scare you if I wanted," Sophie stated, smiling to herself.
He rolled his eyes. "You can't just do that."
"I could if I wanted," Sophie said, smiling.
"Yeah, well you would miss me too much," he said, waving her off. "What are we having for dinner?" He asked.
"That weird blue stuff," she told him. After all the years she still had not taken the time to learn the names of every food she ate. She knew them by what they tasted like.
He just nodded, not understanding what she was talking about. "Okay. Hey, guess what tomorrow is?" She just stared at him. "Me and Dex have our first day at work."
"Don't you guys go in at different times, though?" She asked.
He nodded. "Yeah, but we are there at the same time for at least three hours," he said.
"Three hours at the same time. . . How long are you working?" She frowned.
"Uh. . . About five hours," he answered. "Most people are in there for eight but we're new so we only have five hours."
"That's. . . Well, I guess lunch plans are off," she said, frowning.
He rolled his eyes. "Lunch break is thirty minutes and I'm allowed to go home for lunch. You don't have anywhere to go tomorrow, right?" She shook her head. "So, just stay home and then whenever my lunch time is I'll come home and we can have lunch tomorrow."
She nodded and gave him a small peck on the lips. "We're officially adults now," she said, grinning.
He rolled his eyes. "We've been adults for a few years, now," he said, chuckling.
"Yeah but now we have proof. Jobs, marriage, responsibilities. It's. . . Weird." She shrugged. "Eh, we'll get used to it."
___
"No, don't put it there," Kambry said, shaking her head. He rolled his eyes and moved the frame a few spaces over. "That's. . . Good enough," she said.
He nodded and held out his hand for the clip to place it on the wall. When she handed it to him he said a quick thanks before putting it on the wall. He took a step back and admired the wall. "So, good isn't it?"
She nodded. "Of course. Thanks Keefe."
He waved her off. "No problem, Kambry."
"So, when did you get this job?" She asked, handing him a piece of mallowmelt.
He took it and grinned. "Well, today is my first day. I actually had no idea what I was doing. This isn't so bad, actually. Though, I can kind of tell why they hired me," he said.
"Why?"
"Because I don't think anyone smart would get this job willingly," he stated truthfully. "Edaline was right when she said me and Dex are idiots."
"Edaline. . . Your mother-in-law, right?" Kambry raised an eyebrow.
He nodded. "Yeah, Sophie's adopted mom," he said. "You know Sophie, right?"
"Well, yeah. Who doesn't know Sophie?" She almost scoffed.
He rolled his eyes. "I meant as in you've talked to her," he corrected.
She nodded. "Yeah. I mean, we're in the same year," she said.
Keefe shrugged. "That doesn't mean you've talked to her before immediately."
"We were paired together in a splotting match once. I didn't even bother trying."
Keefe grinned. "Yeah, she was amazing at those. If she was to try right now she probably still would be amazing."
"Yeah. She's a natural at literally everything. I don't get it. Eh, it doesn't matter."
He nodded. "How's Maxon?"
"You know about that?" She asked, eyes wide.
"About how you're getting married? Well, yeah. I heard it from Biana. Are you still friends with her?"
"I'm more friends with Maruca. She's really calmed down a lot, huh?" Keefe nodded. "I'm actually the godmother of her kids."
"Safa and Haben, right?" He smiled when she nodded. "Maruca sent us a picture of them and they're adorable. They're a few years old now, aren't they?"
She nodded. "Yeah, I think they're two or three years old. I haven't really asked them. I haven't talked to her or Valik in about a year now. They're really closed off now that they're married. They have jobs, too. You know how married life is busy with children and everything."
"Actually I don't know," he said.
She frowned. "You and Sophie aren't having any kids."
He shook his head. "We're waiting a year."
"Man, your fangirls are going to be angry."
"Why does everyone keep saying that? And who are the fangirls?" He almost whined.
"There's this group of team foster-keefers ," she started.
"That's what I used to call me and Sophie," he said, frowning.
"Yeah, they found out and they took the name and named themselves it."
"I should have copyrighted it."
She rolled her eyes. "Anyways, they're what humans call fangirls. A group of people, sometimes even boys included, who obsess over something they love. In this case, they are fangirling about your relationship. They ship you. Get it? Because at the end of relationship there's ship. I actually just found that out yesterday and needed to tell you. Anyways. They have meetings at this one girl's house every Saturday. I think she's, like, fifteen."
"That's. . . Stalkerish."
She waved it off. "There's people of all age groups in it. It's not just your ship they talk about. They talk about other relationships. There was a time when one person brought up a Sophie and Cael ship. That person almost got killed. The only ship that everyone in there agreed on was team foster-keefe. It's why it's their main. I mean, some ship you guys with other people too, which is allowed."
"You're allowed to ship somebody with more than one person?" He asked, frowning.
"Yeah. It's fun to see them get so distraught when two of their ships are going together and fighting or something and they're trying to pick a side and can't." She started laughing. "Oh, when Fitz and Ashla got married one girl was freaking out because she shipped Sophie with Fitz. She was caught though because she was also really happy that you were ending up with Sophie."
"I'm scared."
"As you should be. Fangirls will be the cause of world domination. You do not want to be in the same room as a girl when somebody ruins her ship."
"So, how do you know so much about this group, hmm?" He raised an eyebrow.
She grinned. "Because my sister is in it. I was invited to a meeting or two. People worship me there because I've actually talked to you both before."
"So teen girls fangirling about adult relationships?" He raised an eyebrow.
"Yep. Does that bother you?" She raised an eyebrow.
He shrugged. "It's not like a girl is going up to me in person and stroking my face and saying she loves me so I'm fine with it."
Kambry laughed.
I'm sorry I couldn't help adding the last part. Keefe and Sophie need to know how much they belong together even though they're already together. Anyways. Kambry is named after a girl I used to know. If you can guess what I got the name Maxon from I love you. Fun fact: I looked up the name Maxon on a name meaning thing and it said, "Name placed by America Singer." I started freaking out. It was hilarious.
