Chapter Seven

a/n: So I'm thinking of posting other books on this account and one of them is the thirty days letter challenge but I'm not sure. . .

So after my mom read the first book and gave it back to me I put it down somewhere and lost it so I'm sorry if I got the levels and ages wrong.

"Twelve days," Ashla cheered, stepping into Sophie and Keefe's house.

Sophie grinned. "Excited?" Sophie asked her, sitting up from her spot on the couch.

Ashla rolled her eyes. "Duh! Are you?"

Sophie shook her head. "No," she said, her voice laced with sarcasm.

Ashla sighed. "So, what are we doing with you today?"

Sophie shook her head. "Nothing. I'm going to go to the Forbidden Cities with Keefe."

Ashla gasped. "What? How?"

Sophie laughed. "The council is slowly letting people visit the humans and join their lives because we're working towards building a relationship with the humans so that we can one day let ourselves be known to them once more."

"Isn't that really dangerous?" Ashla gasped.

Sophie shook her head. "In modern times people aren't really scared as much as they used to be of the unknown and it seems like they'd accept us more. Humans aren't really interested in the witch trials anymore."

"Witch trials?" Ashla frowned.

"That's right. . . They don't talk about the humans in Multispecesial Studies," Sophie murmured. "A long, long time ago the humans thought that there were such things as witches. Do you know what those are?"

Ashla bit her lip. "Vaguely."

"Basically people with special powers and perform spells on people. There are things where they are portrayed as evil from way back when, but recently there have been things like the tv show Charmed or Buffy where they're not evil. Well, there are such thing as evil witches but in these shows they glamour on the good ones."

Ashla nodded. "Okay, so what are witch trials?"

"Basically they would accuse people of practicing magic and burn them at the stake."

"They would burn them?" Ashla gasped.

Sophie nodded. "Worse thing is most likely all of them were innocent."

"This is why we disown humans. How could they betray their own kind like that?" Ashla looked at Sophie in sorrow. "Are you sure it's a good idea?"

Sophie nodded. "As I said, they recognized their mistakes and I don't think anything like that could ever happen again. As long as we approach them carefully and friend the important people and gain trust we could do it."

Ashla shrugged. "So, what's the first step?"

Sophie took in a deep breathe. "That's the funny part, actually. The first step is to get my human family to remember me. Humanizing one elf could work for all the others."

Ashla's eyes widened. "You're going to have your human family remember you? Are you sure that's a good idea?"

Sophie shook her head. "No, it's a bad idea. The council insists though. So I'm going to be 'visiting' Mr. Forkle a lot with Keefe and we're going to have a honeymoon in the Forbidden Cities."

"Honeymoon?" Ashla frowned.

"You know how after you and Fitz got married you spent a week alone at your house out of common courtesy?"

Ashla nodded. "Yeah, what about it?"

"Well, humans have these things called honeymoons where they usually go on a trip somewhere together after they get married and spend a week or two, sometimes a month, by themselves and have alone time together, far away from their families so they won't be disturbed." She shrugged. "We're going to have one in the Forbidden Cities so we can get more friends and then we're going to have a fake welcome home party at Mr. Forkle's house."

Ashla tilted her head to the side. "That sounds really nice."

Sophie nodded. "Yeah, but we can't have a coming home party if there's no one to come home for us."

___

"Sophie, Keefe, hey guys," Mr. Forkle grinned at Sophie and Keefe who grinned back.

"Hey, Wrinkles," Keefe greeted playfully.

Mr. Forkle scowled and took in a deep breath. "Come on in," he said, gesturing to where Sophie's human family was.

"You're the Freemans, right?" Keefe asked.

They nodded. "Yes, we are," her human mother said smiling. "I'[m Kate, this is my husband Connor, and our daughter Natalie."

Mr. Forkle walked up. "You remember my grandaughter, Sophie," he put a hand on her shoulder as they nodded. "This is her fiance, Keefe."

"This is your fiance?" Amy gasped.

Sophie grinned. "Yeah, I told you about him?" She smiled. "I thought Forkle showed you a picture."

"Forkle? She calls you Forkle?" Kate gasped.

"Yeah, grandpa or grandfather is just too weird for us," Sophie said, smiling at him. "You didn't tell me that you were going to have company," she lied. She knew.

"Oh, yes, sorry. We were just having a small get together. How about you three talk together and I'll have an older adult conversation with Kate and Connor," he said, smiling at her.

She nodded. "Here, we'll go to the dining room," Sophie said, gesturing to where she was told the dining room was. Both Amy and Keefe followed her.

"So, how long have you two been together?" Amy asked, smiling forcefully.

"Um, how long?" Sophie looked to him.

He laughed. "Well, at least two years, maybe almost three?" He almost asked.

She nodded. "Yeah, that long. Wow."

"You guys don't count how long?" Amy gasped.

"Well, how long doesn't matter. All that matters is that after all that time we finally got together." Keefe playfully glared at her.

Sophie smiled and let out a small giggle as she looked at him. "Hey, I didn't know."

Keefe rolled his eyes. "No, you knew." He gestured to her necklace that he gave her when she was fourteen.

She shrugged. "Do you know how long you've known each other?"

Sophie nodded. "Yeah, since I was a level two and he was a level four."

"Level?" Amy asked, confused.

"Oh, our old school goes by levels," she said, coming up with a lie to cover her mistake.

"Yeah," he contributed.

Sophie cut in. "It's like. . . I was in seventh and he was supposed to be in eight but instead was in ninth because he skipped his what was would have been sixth grade," she said, measuring the ages in her head. She decided to go off that she thought she was twelve even though she found out if she counted from the conception date like elves, she was thirteen.

Amy nodded. "That's weird. . . " She trailed off. "How'd you meet?"

Sophie grinned at him. "He was ditching class and I pretty much got kicked out of mine."

Amy gasped. "What?"

"Well, I was in a. . .  chemistry class," she said, picking the most similar class the alchemy. "I was knew and didn't really no her rules. On the paper it said WHAP, which I thought was a spelling error for whip. It actually meant wash hands and present. When I whipped it, it kind of blew up and I burned her favorite jacket," she said, replacing cape with jacket to make it seem more human. "She made me go to the infirmary, so I would leave, and I ended up running into Keefe. He turned out being best friends with one of the few friends I had made and we continued talking and hanging out and never stopped."

"So, where do you guys live?" She asked, tilting her head to the side.

"Michigan," Sophie answered without thinking.

"We weren't born there, both of us. We were both transfer students. He originally lived in Wyoming and I'm from here," she said while she grinned.

Amy nodded. "Oh," she said.

"So, what about you? What's your boyfriend's name?"

She visibly sat up in her chair. "Cameron? He's amazing."

"Cameron and Amy," Sophie tested.

"Amy?" Amy frowned.

"I mean Natalie," Sophie corrected.

Amy nodded, confused. A somewhat recognition crossed her face for the name, but she wouldn't know how until Sophie was able to truly jog her memory.

___

"It was so nice of you to come by," Mr. Forkle said, seeing Sophie's family off. They waved while walking back to their house next door. Mr. Forkle sighed. "So, you guys going back home now?"

Sophie nodded. "Yeah we're having dinner with my mom and dad."

"That sounds fun," he said, smiling.

She nodded. "Yeah. We'll come back after the wedding. You're still coming, right?"

He scoffed. "You really think I wouldn't come to the wedding."

"We figured we were coming but we never got a RSIP," Keefe explained for her.

He nodded. "Well, I'm coming. How many days until?"

"Twelve," she said.

He sighed. "That's really close. How long have you two been engaged?"

"About two months. We just wanted to get it over and done with, you know?" Sophie answered.

He nodded in response. Keefe cut in, "Well, we better be going before Eddy and Grady eat without us."

"Eddy? You're calling my mom Eddy?" Sophie frowned at him.

He nodded. "Yeah, she said I could so I am," he said, shrugging.

Sophie nodded, before waving to Mr. Forkle. "I'll see you, Forkle."

"Bye Sophie," he said, smiling.
