Chapter Forty
a/n: *cries for a bazillion years straight* I DON'T WANT THIS TO END BUT THIS IS IT GUYS.
I will be posting the epilogue and finishing facts tomorrow, (maybe later today if I have time), the list of fanfics y'all should read + the list of chapters in this book that have importance the day after, the THG fanfic preview + the trailer with it the day after that, and then the Neverseen ending rewrite the day after that. Also, the thing that I mention at the end of this author note at the top will be posted in a week or two.
chapter question (I might add these to all the stuff stated above): I have three (please answer them xD)
#1: What was your favorite scene in each book? (name two scenes)
#2: What will you miss the most?
#3: What are you looking forward to the most out of all these little extra stuff I will post?
Because of the last chapter I decided to incorporate almost all the characters. Even that girl from the ice cream place in chapter fourteen makes a stop xD
Also, I don't know if you remember since it was more than twenty chapters ago but on their honeymoon they wrote that cheesy teenfic novel "Oh no, I married a nerd!" and I've been keeping this a secret for SO LONG and I'm happy that I can finally announce that after my small break from kotlc fanfiction writing(at least a week if not two), I will be writing that as a kotlc au because it's so stupid it's funny xD
not reread or edited
(*quick note: this is REALLY long compared to my other chapters. [small compared to my book, Little Sister, though...] So sad it took me until the last chapter to write a long one. *cries for the fifth time since I started writing this authors note*)
"Just stand still for five seconds," Sophie said in a demanding tone to Kenric. "Five seconds and then we'll do your sister and then the two of you together then we'll leave," she said, ignoring the impatient glare from the photographer.
"But Mommy!" He cried in the enlightened language.
She sighed when the photographer gave them a questioning look. Kenric could understand what she was saying when she spoke in English but he couldn't speak it fluently.
Keefe lifted Kenric from his spot and whispered something in his ear. Whatever he said seemed to work because after he put Kenric down, Kenric ran to his spot and posed for the picture. The photographer ended up taking about three pictures of him doing different poses before turning to Sophie. "I think we have enough for him, would one of you get your daughter ready while I tell the other one some things we can do for her pictures?"
Keefe immediately walked over to get Rowan while Sophie walked up to her and after about five minutes, she finally settled on the pictures she wanted Rowan to do. "This is so stressful. Why did you want to do this?" Keefe raised an eyebrow.
She rolled her eyes. "We need some pictures of them while they're still kids. We can't live off Forkle's human phone forever."
After they finished those pictures, which became extra stressful when Rowan needed a diaper change in the middle of one, they decided to only take one picture with Kenric and Rowan together and they'd order more than one when the pictures were ready.
They sat Kenric on the ground and ordered him to stay still and hold Rowan. After following instructions from the photographer; chin up, eyes on your sister's face, don't crush her, they took the picture.
"How many more can we take?" Sophie asked curiously.
The photographer looked at the computer. "Around two or three more."
Sophie smiled and turned to Keefe. "Okay, let's take two more with me and you in them and then we'll pick pictures to order and before we get something to eat."
He nodded. "You're the one who knows what you're doing, not me," he said, holding his arms up.
She rolled her eyes and around forty-five minutes later they were in the food court at the mall eating ice cream. "I really hope this doesn't count as eating animals," Sophie said, holding up a spoon to Kenric's face while he tried to tell her he could feed himself.
Keefe shrugged. "At the moment, I'm too tired to care."
"So I could have bought chicken and you never would've known?" She frowned.
He rolled his eyes. "I mean, I don't care if this counts because it's not like it's actual meat. Chicken is meat so no."
She frowned. "You're such a vegetarian," she whined.
"You are too, Sophie," he reminded, smiling.
She rolled her eyes and flicked the spoon at him, getting ice cream on his face. "Ha."
He did the same to her, only more because he had a glob of ice cream on the spoon. "Ha ha," he retorted.
She narrowed her eyes and so did his. She went to go fling some more at him when Kenric started to whine about her flinging his ice cream. She sighed and gave him the spoon. "I'm going to the bathroom, I'll be back quick."
Keefe started to clean up the ice cream mess and then turned to Kenric, "Can you go grab some napkins from the napkins thing over there?" He asked, pointing. Kenric nodded in excitement, since he usually wasn't allowed to do anything, and bolted away.
Keefe lifted Rowan from her baby seat and frowned when he saw some ice cream got flicked over her. When Kenric returned with more napkins than necessary, which Keefe decided not to comment on when he saw how happy Kenric was, he immediately went to cleaning her face. "Kenric, take some napkins and wipe off your face. It's covered in chocolate."
Kenric started to mumble under his breath in protest but after a small glare from Keefe, he immediately went to work getting it all off his face. When he was done he turned to Keefe. "Did I get it all, Daddy?"
Keefe nodded. "Yep, you're clean," he declared, grinning.
"Oh my gosh, you're Keefe, right?" A girl asked, walking by. Keefe raised an eyebrow in questioning. "I'm Courtney, one of Natalie's best friends. We met a long time ago," she introduced. "I think it was when you just got married." She looked at the kids. "Oh my gosh, are they yours?"
Keefe nodded. "Yeah. You remember my wife, right?"
"I think I remember her," she said. "Sophie, right?" He nodded. "Where is she?"
"She's in the bathroom. We had a little problem with ice cream and she had to go clean herself up," he said.
She nodded. "Well, I've got to go. My boyfriend, Ronnie, was supposed to meet me here a few minutes ago. It was nice talking to you."
He nodded. "If you see Natalie tell her I said hi," he said, smiling softly. She nodded and waved before walking away.
"Mommy is way prettier than her," Kenric whispered under his breath to Keefe.
Keefe turned to his son and laughed lightly. "Your Mom is prettier than everyone, buddy," he stated just as Sophie walked back over, her face cleaned.
"What did I miss?" She asked, sitting down.
"One of Natalie's friends stopped over to say hi. Courtney, I'm pretty sure," he said, shrugging. "Are we ready to go?" He questioned, placing Rowan back in her seat.
___
"Keefe, get over here!" Sophie shouted, a trying not to laugh. He frowned in confusion as she held up a notebook with excitement. "Remember this?" She questioned, handing it over.
He took it from her hand. "Oh no, I married a nerd," he said out loud. "Oh my gosh, is this that cliche as possible teen fiction novel we wrote on our honeymoon?" He asked her, laughing. She nodded, laughing loudly.
"I totally forgot about this," she said, grinning.
He nodded. "Same. How'd you find it?"
"I was searching for my old scrapbook to let Kate borrow to ease her mind into seeing old memories like I did for Amy," she explained. "Also, do you have everything ready for the party?"
"Party?"
She groaned. "Rowan is six months tomorrow and I believe that we need to take a moment and throw a party and congratulate ourselves on making it this far without accidentally killing our children."
He rolled his eyes. "What do they think it's for?"
"They think it's a party to celebrate being one step closer to revealing ourselves to humans. You know, since Kate remembered?" She felt awkward calling her human parents Mom and Dad after so long and instead opted for calling them by their names.
"Good cover," he said, rolling his eyes. "I'll go set us up then. Who's coming?"
"Fashla, Dexana, Dellden, and Gradaline," she said, using the shortened names Keefe came up with a few years before out of fun for when they had to say a bunch of names. "Also Marella, Jensi, Kambry, Maxon-"
"Kambry and Maxon?"
"Yeah, old news, right?" She laughed lightly. "Okay, Julia, her friends, and her parents are invited. Kamry isn't sure but we'll see." She traced her thoughts. "Also, Terik and Elwin. And Bronte and Forkle. Oh, and I even got Oralie to come." She sighed. "And my human family."
"Your- How?"
"It's a test to see if they can light leap with us," she said. "Bronte said that they used to do it a very long time ago when humans and elves were still on good terms but they only did short distance. Kate volunteered to try and if it works then Amy and Connor will be picked up. Each of them will be brought by a very skilled person in light leaping."
"That's cool," he replied. "Kate's brave, though." He smiled.
She nodded. "I don't get why she'd do that but yes, she is."
___
Sophie was in the middle of a conversation with Amy when Edaline came out and pulled her aside. "What?" Sophie asked, confused.
"Are you sure there's nothing your announcing tonight?" Edaline raised an eyebrow.
Sophie frowned. "Yes, I'm sure," she said.
Edaline sighed in relief. "Thank gosh you're not pregnant again."
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Yeah, that's not happening for a long time," she said, waving it off. "Rowan and Kenric are enough."
"Speaking of my grandchildren, where are they?" She started to look around.
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Rowan is taking a nap upstairs and Kenric is probably shadowing everything Keefe does."
"That's adorable."
Sophie nodded. "I know."
"Well-"
"There you are," Grady exclaimed, walking over. He gave Sophie a tight hug before standing next to Edaline. "What are you two talking about?"
"Kenric and Rowan," Sophie said, smiling.
"Yes, our two favorite people in the world," Grady commented.
Sophie grinned. "What happened to me being your favorite person in the world?"
"You no longer live with us. We don't have to lie," Edaline joked.
Sophie rolled her eyes. "I've got to go grab Rowan from her nap. I'll talk with you guys later. Love you." She gave them a quick hug before walking towards the stairs. She was stopped midway by Fitz, Ashla, Biana, and Dex. "What?" She asked, frowning.
"My sister came here. I asked her to babysit Adela while I went to your party and she got all offended and I had to invite her," Ashla stated guiltily. "She's friends with Kambry, though, so Kambry and Maxon are distracting her, thank gosh."
"Where's Adela?" Sophie asked.
"Keefe is watching her with Kenric and Rowan."
"Rowan? She's supposed to be taking a nap."
"He saw you were talking to Amy and decided to wake her up for you," Biana said. "Literal goals."
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Is that it?"
"Kamry, your student, was too busy to come today. I talked to her dad when he came to my dad's store," Dex said.
"And your favorite student and her friends are eating all the food," Fitz added.
"I told her not to touch the food yet," Sophie mumbled, walking to the kitchen. "Seriously?" She questioned when she saw them splitting some of the mallowmelt.
Julia looked up with wide eyes. "Uh, hey Sophie," she greeted, mouth filled with food. "'Sup?"
Sophie raised an eyebrow. "'Sup? Really?"
"Sorry?" Callia cut in.
"You're a great cook?" Caine added.
"You're our favorite teacher," Jensen stated. "You know that, right?"
"I'm willing to break my nice person cred if you steal my food one more time," she said, pointing with narrowed eyes. They all nodded and stepped away from the food. She sighed and walked out, only to slam right into Elwin. "Elwin, my buddy, how are you?" She grinned.
He rolled his eyes. "Hi, Sophie."
"How are you?"
"I'm good. How are the kids?"
She smiled. "Rowan is... Well, a baby. I'm guessing she's fine. I heard that babies talk and I thought that meant they talk, you know? Rowan says like... three words a week."
Elwin nodded. "All babies are different Sophie. Even your two children will be different, actually."
She nodded. "Well, I've got to go make it to the other side of the room. Have fun."
She walked by him and waved to people she passed, including Bronte, Oralie, Terik, Forkle, her human parents, Alden and Della. Then she saw Maeve laughing obnoxiously at something Maxon said while Kambry sat next to him with an annoyed expression. Marella and Jensi sat next to them with worried faces. "Hi guys," Sophie greeted, sitting down and smiling.
"Sophie," Kambry greeted, overly perky.
Sophie smiled and looked at Maeve. "I'm about to go steal my husband and kids as well as Ashla and Fitz, we're wondering if you could watch Adela for an hour?"
Maeve rolled her eyes. "Of course it's me you all drop your problems on. Always too busy and being selfish while I take time out of my day to watch my sister's kids." She rolled her eyes.
Sophie resisted the urge to 'bite her thumb' at Maeve as they would say in Romeo and Juliet. Whem Maeve was far enough away, Sophie turned to Kambry and mouthed 'you're welcome.'
Finally, Sophie crossed into the living room where Keefe sat on the floor on a blanket with toys in it. Somehow, the entire party had made it's way into that room while she walked around. She called in Kambry, Maxon, Marella, and Jensi, and then took a seat on the blanket next to Keefe. She took Rowan and sat her in her lap while Keefe had his legs crossed, Kenric sitting in front of him on the blanket, playing with his toys.
Sophie looked around the room at everyone, her family, talking to each other and having laughing before at her kids. "You know, if we ever have a kid that grows up with black hair, people would probably question whether the kid was mine or Fitz," Keefe whispered to her, making her laugh.
She leaned her head on his shoulder and looked at Rowan as she started to whisper random words. Sophie looked to Kenric. "What is that?" She asked, pointing to one of his toys.
"Uncle Forkle gave it to me from the lost cities," he said. "He called it an action figure."
"When did he give you that?" She asked, picking it up to inspect it.
"When he came in," Keefe answered for him. "I helped Kenric open it and he's been playing with it since the party started."
Sophie nodded. "There's no small parts that came with it, right?"
"No," Keefe answered.
"Good," she said, sighing in relief. "Rowan's too young to die now. I think that would be a record in the Elvin world. I'd rather not have any part in that record. Or my children."
He nodded.
___
"Wave goodbye to your grandparents, please," Sophie said to Kenric.
He jumped up from his place on his blanket and hugged Edaline and Grady tightly. "Bye!" He shouted.
They each gave him a kiss on the forehead before waving to Sophie and Keefe. "We'll see you guys later," Edaline said before exiting the house with Grady.
The only people left were Fitz, Ashla, Biana, and Dex. "We should go, it's late and we have things to do tomorrow." Ashla stood up, Fitz standing up after her while holding Adela.
"Bye," Sophie said, walking over and hugging each of them.
"You get a head start," Biana told Dex. "You're coming here tomorrow and I'm not so you can leave perfectly happy."
Dex rolled his eyes at Biana and gave Sophie a quick hug. "I'll see you guys tomorrow," he said, smiling. He then kissed Biana's cheek. "See you at home," he told her before walking out to go home.
Sophie picked up Rowan and started to burp her as Keefe took Kenric into the bathroom to help him get ready for bed. "You know," Sophie said, "this is how it all started."
"What?" Biana asked, confused.
Sophie shrugged. "I was trying to think back to when the story of my life started, you know? Like, not the huge Neverseen part of my life... I mean, the part of my life where I started to be so happy. It started with you."
Biana frowned. "How?"
Sophie shrugged before mimicking Biana's voice. "Sophie!" She mimicked. "My good match list came in!"
Biana smiled. "I guess it all did start with me. You're welcome."
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Your husband is waiting. You should probably go."
Biana nodded. "Yeah, I will," she said. "Bye, Soph."
Sophie smiled and gave her an awkward side-hug around Rowan. "Bye Biana."
Then, in a small voice, Rowan spoke clearly for the first time that day.
"Bye bye."
