"I don't understand this," Sophie said, tugging softly at the roots of her hair.
"It's simple. You just put the names of these people here and the names of the others over there," Bronte instructed.
"How do you know the difference?" She asked, frowning. "It all looks the same."
"It's because you're colorblind. Now pay attention," he said. He repeated his instructions from earlier and tried to be as patient as possible. "If you don't learn this you'll never be able to do the impossible."
"I've already done the impossible," she tried.
"You'll never become a councilor if you can't understand the simple instructions. Now, where does this go?"
She shrugged. "The left."
He nodded. "This one?"
"Left," she answered, unsure.
He nodded and grinned. "Even some councilors get that one wrong sometimes. You're doing great."
She smiled. "Thank you, I think."
He nodded. "How about this name?"
"Right."
"Why?"
"It's got the line on the end," she said, pointing. "Plus, I know her. She belongs on the right."
"You're acting like the right is prison. What's so bad about Stina?"
Sophie scoffed. "Everything. You are aware that she basically threatened everyone in the school and personally sought out to ruin my life, right?"
He laughed it off. "I thought you cleared it off with her years ago."
"I know why she hates me and I understand that. It's just that she hates everyone else too and that isn't justified. She's allowed to hate me, not my friends. They never did anything to her and I personally think it's stupid that she got into Foxfire in the first place."
He rolled his eyes. "Councilors can't be bias. You have to be fair."
She nodded. "Oh, I'm not bias. If she was supposed to go in the left I would put her in the left. I just wouldn't be happy doing it." She shrugged. "And what do you mean you guys can't be bias? You tried having me exiled just because your hatred towards me when we first met." Sophie shook her head.
"I'm allowed to be bias because I'm older than you three times plus one thousand," he declared. "I've been a councilor a long time and I only trust you taking my place. That won't happen unless you get your act together and do this right."
He pointed back to the paper. "Where does this name go?"
She looked at it confused. "Left. . . " She trailed off. "But he's not- What do I not know?" She looked at Bronte in alarm.
"It seems that your husband has a life," Bronte said, looking at the paper with a smile.
"He never told me he got a job," she said, scowling. "When I get home I'm going to kill him for not telling me."
"Hey, I think it's great he has a job. He can support the family."
"Family of two," Sophie said immediately. "Plus, I'm currently acting as a Keeper and I make money. Also, the Elf trust fund that I barely ever use. Really, a job isn't needed. It's just something he wanted and never told me about." She shook her head.
"You're mad he got a job?" Bronte tried not to laugh.
"I'm mad he didn't tell me," she corrected. She let out a sigh. "Next name." She looked at the paper and let out a groan. "You're kidding? Dex got a job too?"
Bronte chuckled. "When's the last time you communicated with your family and friends? I think they're moving on without you."
She rolled her eyes. "I bet you that Biana and Ashla know. Fitz probably knows to. They always leave me out of the important stuff like this."
"Sophie, it says they just got the jobs today," Bronte said, pointing.
Sophie looked closer. "Well, they could have at least told me they both applied for jobs," she said.
Bronte laughed, writing down their names on the left side of the paper. "Okay, who's next?"
"Oh thank gosh," she said. "Fitz is still on the right." She smiled.
"Why are you happy that your friend is unemployed?" Bronte laughed.
Sophie shrugged. "It's not anything against him. I'm just happy he didn't get a job and never tell me."
Bronte let out a laugh.
___
"Hey Sophie," Keefe greeted when she walked through the door. "Guess what?"
"You and Dex got jobs," she said, raising an eyebrow.
He frowned. "It was supposed to be a surprise. How did you find out?"
"I was sorting out names with Bronte. Employed people go on the left, unemployed go on the right. Your name didn't have the unemployed line," she explained. "Why didn't you tell me you applied for a job?" She walked over to the kitchen and he followed after.
"Well, we did it for fun. They usually don't hire too young. They go for older people usually. Then we got the papers saying that we got the jobs today in the mail. We're really surprised Dex got it because he's technically single for the next five months until him and Biana get married. I was going to tell you as soon as I got the paper but you weren't home," he explained.
"You applied for a job for fun?" She raised an eyebrow. "You've got to be kidding."
"Hey! They probably say name of spouse and were like 'Oh, he's good!' so I blame your name," he said.
"Really? You blame you getting a job on me?" She held back form laughing. "Wait, why are we fighting over you getting a job? It's actually really great."
He grinned. "Yeah, it kind of is. I never actually saw myself getting a job but this is nice."
She smiled at him. "So, who knows before me?"
"Dex told Biana when she was with Fitz and Ashla so basically everyone," he explained. "I even told my dad."
Sophie gasped. "You talked to your dad?"
"Yeah. I mean, sure I didn't invite him to the wedding but that doesn't mean I'm not totally closed off from him." He shrugged.
She immediately hugged him. "Aww, you're so grown up now!"
He pushed her off him. "You tell your dad you got a job and then your wife gets all touchy-touchy," he said, frowning.
She laughed it off. "Oh you hush. Who do you talk to during the day? I've never asked you because I never felt the need to. I'm curious, though."
"Curiosity killed the cat."
"Satisfaction brought it back. Now spill," she said, smiling.
He rolled his eyes. "Usually I talk with Fitz and Ashla. Sometimes I talk with Dex and every once and a while I'll even hang out with Biana, but that's not normal really. It only happens when I go to hang out with Dex and she's there but he's not," he explained. "Then once a month there are the times when I go back to my old house and talk with my dad."
Sophie nodded. "You just do the same stuff everyday? That's terrible."
Keefe shook his head. "Not really. I mean, I change up my schedule so it's not the same everyday. It's not like everyday i visit Fitz and Ashla, go off to Dex and Biana, then go home. That would just suck."
Sophie nodded. "Well, I'm happy you have a life," she said, patting his head playfully.
"Don't touch my hair," he said, swiping her hand away.
She grinned and wrapped her arms around his neck, letting her fingers play with his hair. "I'm touching your hair," she teased.
He just rolled his eyes and wrapped his arms around her waist. He leaned in and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. "Okay, okay, I get it. Now, why were you with Bronte sorting names?"
"Future Councilor training," she explained. "I mean, it's not one hundred percent me getting the job but the new law is coming out soon and they really believe I could get it."
"Wait, how are you certain you'll be a possibility? They usually pick from the school leaders."
"They're opening it up to two certain married couples, including us. They said that even if I don't win I'm going to be happy with the other person that they choose." She shrugged. "I don't know but Bronte had this knowing smile on his face. The other person is a guy."
Keefe nodded. "I wonder who the other person is," he said.
She sighed. "Well, someone married."
"And someone you know," he finished off.
"So that leaves Dex's dad, Alden, or my Dad," she said. "They're the only married guys I would like being a councilor. Everyone else I would either not care or I'd get mad at."
Keefe nodded. "It's probably Alden," he said. "I don't know, though. Grady does have a really good ability that could make him be chosen."
"But Alden is a Vacker," Sophie said, shrugging. "I don't know. This is a hard one."
Keefe nodded. "You want to know what I just realized?"
"What?"
"We haven't seen Elwin for healing reasons for a full year. Actually, the only time we saw him really recently is when he came to our wedding," he said. "That's so weird."
Sophie nodded, her eyes widened. "Are you suggesting one of us purposely break an arm or something so we can see Elwin?"
Keefe chuckled. "I'm just saying, this is a new record."
"Don't jinx it," she scolded, shaking her head. "It is weird, though. He's like... always been in our lives and we just don't give him enough credit." She shook her head. "I mean, just because none of us has been hurt doesn't mean we should just not see him. Doctors should get visiting rights too!"
Keefe rolled his eyes. "Sophie, it's cool. We can just visit him tomorrow if we want. Call him ahead though," Keefe instructed, walking away.
"Where are you going?" She asked, frowning.
"I'm getting changed. You're in charge of dinner tonight," he called.
She scowled but still started to take out ingredients for food anyways.
