Midnight Sun One Shot

"Why is Edward so damn dramatic?"

-Courtney Swan

***

(A/N: Yes, I am reading Midnight Sun right now, and I think it is kind of funny how dramatic Edward is, but couldn't help but wonder what he would think of a first-impression of Courtney... thus, this was born. I hope you enjoy!)

Jasper's mind held suffering.

Alas, it is something that I have grown accustomed too. My brother of sorts has his own issues, issues that all of us have had to go through one way or another. Hearing Jasper's thoughts are kind of like being back at the beginning myself. Back to the place I had tried so brutally hard to forget. He knew that he didn't have the bet self control, and he knew that Alice worries about him.

The news from Alice that his blood singer was here did nothing to ease my concerns. One of the Swan sisters, the talk of the school... in a way that is so insanely ridiculous it makes me want to laugh aloud. I heard the flurry of words resonating through my mind as soon as I stepped within the dreary halls of the school. Alice had developed a fond liking of the girl, and was telling me now in our own way of communication. Alice and I are good with communicating, speaking in ways nobody can hear... her words are almost droned out by the others though.

'She needs to brush her hair,' came the stiff thought from the direction of Jessica Stanley. Speaking of Isabella, of course. I didn't particularly agree with her, although the nagging emptiness of Bella Swan's mind was making me grow increasingly uncomfortable. Not that she just didn't think much, I am sure she had plenty to voice about our school. It was like her mind was just... a void. A void hidden by a shy, blushing girl with long hair and short stature.

 'Edward.'

My name, the one word that gets my attention. Not because it is mine necessarily, more because people don't use it much. Alice was gazing at me, her big eyes glowing with knowledge some could only dream of acquiring. I tilted my head to the side.

Alice laughed, and a brief thought floated through her head about how I looked like a confused puppy. I allowed a soft smile to grace my face, leaning back in my chair and tapping my finger on the table. She didn't speak anything else directly toward me, she just shook her head knowingly, like she was the one who could read minds.

I sat up straighter in my seat. It was Jasper's voice that had caught my attention. It wasn't in pain though, it wasn't wracked with the agony that I had anticipated hearing. No, it was... calm.

I had to re-assess, concerned that I had somehow heard wrong. No, it was true, Jasper's mind was relaxed. Relaxed for the first time in as far back as I care to remember.

'Ew, this place is already so stereotypical.'

There was the girl. The other Swan girl... it reassured me in the slightest that I could hear into her mind, although guilt immediately settled in as soon as I felt it. Courtney didn't look anything like her sister. She was tall for one, and looked like she could be an athlete. An athlete, in Forks, it is ad to say that would be something new.

Her face had the smallest resemblance to her twin, although the hair was really the only indistinguishable feature they shared. That an eyes, big, dark eyes. The blood pooled in Courtney's cheeks, unlike the paleness of her sisters, and Jasper's eyes flickered over.

There was no image of  thirst. No fantasies of lowering his lips to her throat. Nothing of the sort... instead, there was a sentence that sounded so unblemished that it was almost comical.

 'She's pretty.'

Pretty. He didn't think of her scent, (that I could smell from here, and honestly was particularly desirable... floral, even.) he didn't think of the obvious blood that warmed her cheeks, or her soft pulse that echoed like a drum beat compared to the fluttering of the other human's.

 Just... that she's pretty.

Alice leapt up from her seat, a little too fast to be natural, so she turned and gave me a look, knowing that I would be sending her a stiff glare, and danced over to the two.

 'Ha, it's Cordie.'

"Courtney." I corrected, rolling my eyes at Emmett's audacity. He rolled his eyes, an easy-going grin forming on his face as he raked his hand through his curls.

'Let me have my fun, you buzzkill.'

I rolled my eyes again, the habit growing on me, and crossed my arms across my chest. I heard Jessica's destinctive voice in my head, and fought away a grin that threatened to surface.

'She's sitting with the Cullen's? Am I missing something here?'

 Ah, Jessica...

I heard Courtney's voice speak aloud, and saw a wicked grin spread across Rosalie's face. From what I have gathered, she had deemed Courtney worthy of her attention this morning. She wasn't intimidated by her, which Rosalie admired more than she would with words. Rosalie doesn't like growing close to human's, but Courtney already seemed to have three out of four of my siblings wrapped around her finger.

Four, if you count how Emmett has already gifted he with a nickname.

"Hi guys!" Alice flounced over to our table, practically dragging Courtney by the arm, as she tried to balance a tray of food in the other. Yep... she is definitely an athlete. The way Alice smiled at her, how she exposed all of her teeth and didn't make her feel the slightest bit uncomfortable, was promising.  "This is Courtney Swan!"

She accentuated the name, grinning at Emmett's who wiggled his eyebrows like a creep. Courtney shifted the tray to her elbow, raising her hand in a small wave. "Hi."

It was like I could feel Jasper's emotions through his thoughts. He stared at her for a moment too long to be a casual glance, and he blushed in the only way vampires could. With soft eyes, but tense shoulders.

Alice, obviously forgetting how strong she was for a moment, tugged Courtney down into a seat in between her and Emmett. Courtney didn't smash into the table like a regular human, she just swung her leg over the bench, gently lowering her tray onto the table.

'It must be pure chance that they all have such unusual eyes-'

Oh Courtney Swan, if only you knew.

"Hi Court!" Emmett grinned, accidentally snapping a plastic fork in his hand, but hiding it behind his back before she could notice. "I have heard so much about you."

An alarmed look came over Jasper's face at these words, 'damn-it, Emmett can't spare one hour to be normal.'

I smirked slightly, watching as Courtney's eyes met Jasper's, and another flurry of thoughts raided his mind, and his eyes soften to the point he was practically melting. The word that Courtney spoke was blunt, but her tone almost made me laugh out loud.

 "What?"

"Because, I told him about you!" Alice jumped in, sending Emmett a fierce warning glare. She clapped her hands, and announced that this period would be "get to know Courtney time." The girl herself seemed slightly mortified at the thought of introducing herself to us, claiming in her head that she felt 'small' compare to us. I thought differently... she was different from these other humans, that I could tell.

"I call dibs going first!" Emmett raised his hand, earning another pained thought from Jasper, who ran his hand through his golden hair as if it would make Emmett disappear. "What is your favorite color?"

'Wow, real original.' Jasper rolled his eyes, he wanted to know more about her too, so he couldn't berate Emmett on his choice of questioning. I scoffed lightly at the look Rosalie shot her mate.

Courtney didn't seem bothered, as she just sat up straighter in her seat, her lips quirking into a small grin that Jasper claimed was 'enchanting.' "Red."

Rosalie smiled, finding it ironic that red was this girls favorite color. I did too, and forced my expression to stay neutral.

"What is your favorite sport?" I asked, wanting to confirm my theory that she had at least the smallest athletic abilities. I was right, as I knew her answer even before she said it. Her mind briefly flash-backed to hitting a home-run and winning the finals.

 "Baseball."

When Rosalie asked her what her favorite movie was, I was forced to watch a brief moment of a catchy song from the first "High School Musical" movie. Her cheeks reddened slightly, replying that she didn't really watch movies. Directly after that, I saw a snippet from an Iron Man movie flood her thoughts, and knew the previous statement wasn't true.

After claiming her favorite class was English, Emmett asked the most dignified question he could. "So, if you were claiming to have 'yeeted' something..." his voice trailed off, and he shook his head, "never-mind, that was bad grammar."

"No it wasn't." I blurted out, before actually comprehending what I was doing. Courtney's eyes flew to mine, making a coy comment in her head.

 'He speaks!'

"Proper English rules imply that to make something past-tense, you ad ED," I explained, feeling like I was teaching a bunch of three-year old's trigonometry. "Therefore, it would be yeeted."

"No, it is yote!" Emmett shot back, his eyes flashing with a challenge, he rolled them right after, his curls flopping to the side, "yeeted is not proper grammar at all."

"You guys are arguing about the past-tense of yeet-" she sighed, unspoken allegations about how we don't get any smarter over the years making me grin. "And you are worried about your grammar?"

Courtney giggled softly, and Rosalie gave her one of her very rare warm smiles.

Rosalie's words didn't stop Emmett, and he eventually got Courtney to jokingly speak her opinion, raising her eyebrows after and licking her lips. Her eyes flashed to Jasper when Alice asked his opinion.

'Damn, if that face was anymore perfect, I would jump off of a bridge.'

I pretended to take a sip of water to hide how hard I was suppressing laughter. Courtney laughed at Jasper's bland response, leaning on Alice's shoulder, making the smaller girl grin. I found it odd that her natural survival instincts weren't steering her away from our table. I wasn't complaining though, and held my breath so I didn't have to breath in her scent more than necessary.

Emmett turned to the girl, his arm almost touching hers from the close proximity of the seating arrangement. "You know, when Alice first said your name, I thought she said Cordie."

An array of French curse words came from Jasper's mind, his eyebrow twitching being the only thing to signify his annoyance. 'Why is it impossible for me to not be embarrassed for one day?'

When Jasper is concerned about that, you know the girl must be special.

"Yeah?" Courtney raised one eyebrow, biting the straw of a juice-box with her straight teeth. I heard Jasper sigh.

 "You heard me."

"Well," she looked down at the table, her perfect comeback springing to her brain in less than a second. "When I first heard your name, I thought Alice said Emily."

'They are like a match-made in heaven.' Rosalie sent me a coy smirk, and I snorted, nodding my reply. Courtney and Emmett, they are much more similar than I care to admit. I don't know if that is a good thing or something, but Jasper wasn't cluing into the similarities. He was too busy staring at the small line of tanned skin that grew exposed when Courtney lifted her arms to stretch. I kicked his chair.

"Don't be a pervert." I whispered, and he rolled his eyes, his gaze burning into her neck this time, although not in the bloodthirsty way I thought it would be... still involving his lips though, which made me want to exit the cafeteria.

"So what we are agreeing is that Alice has bad pronunciation?" Emmett tilted his head to the side, his lips jutting out slightly. Courtney laughed.

 "Exactly!"

"You guys!" Alice whined, drawing out the two words as much as she could, until Courtney laughed again.

The human girl has all of us wrapped around her finger now...

And I can only assume that it will stay that way.

A/N: I honestly don't know if that was good or not... please tell me what you think! I will have another chapter out soon, but I had to write this, because when I get inspirtation, I have to write it down, or I might forget it, and then be sad!

Also, I am getting so many more followers all of a sudden, and it is freaking me out in the sense that it is making me happy... like, what did I change to all of a sudden get a bunch of followers? I'm not complaining, just confused.

Thanks for reading, and I love you all!
