44- Stiff and Dangerous

"Veronica, why are you pulling my dick?"

-Shannen Doherty, Heathers

***

"You're not fighting? What, did you pull a muscle or something?"

Okay, so a shit-ton of information has come up in the past few hours. Bella had a dream informing her that Victoria was behind all of this army-bullshit, so now we are... ugh I don't even know.

For one: It was a goddamn dream. If all of our dreams came true, then Shrek would be chasing me around Los Angeles while the dumb-chick from Mean Girls criticized my outfits.

And two: Bella managed to convince Edward to not fight, which in my opinion, is pretty selfish. I mean, they need all the help they can get. Do you think it's easy for me to send Jasper into battle? Rosalie? Emmett? Alice? No, but I am doing it because I have too.

Paul snickered, crossing his arms to show off his impressive biceps, staring down Jasper, who pulled a face and rolled his eyes. I grinned.

"He's doing it for me, okay?" Bella's voice was small and slightly ashamed, making me almost feel bad about this. Key word: almost.

Jacob suddenly looked like he swallowed a golf-ball, and his face reddened with poorly-contained jealousy. My heart pinged. I miss the old Jacob. The Jacob who would sing songs from musicals with me, and watch old movies that neither of us enjoyed. I miss him, from the middle of my half-full heart, to the top of my racing mind, and back down again, I miss him in the way the ocean might miss the sand. He's always there, but I could never get a firm-enough grasp before he runs off to my sister.

A small, irrelevant, part of me felt like i wasn't good enough.

Edward turned and gave me a narrow-eyed look, crossing his arms and shaking his eyes. I managed a small smile. I like Edward, I like that he truly loves Bella... sure, he has a knack for the dramatic, but he's family. He's my family.

"Whatever, what's the plan?"

"This field will give us an advantage in battle." Jasper explained, wrapping an arm around my shoulder. I instinctively leaned into his touch, feeling like I needed to soak up my time with him. Of course, Jasper wasn't going to get hurt... he was Jasper Hale for God's sake! He would do the hurting. I feel guilty, like I could help, I hate knowing that I can't do something, even if I want too. 'We need to lure the newborns-" his face twitched, the only sign he wasn't entirely comfortable with this plan. "With the," he grimaced again, making Paul cock an eyebrow. "With the, uh, girl's scent. But it needs to end here."

"Edward, Courtney, and I are going to a campsite... but they could pick up our scent even if these guys carried us."

"Campsite?" I perked up, unaware of where we were going. "Dude, I don't like camping, you know what-"

"We're not actually camping!" Bella snapped, crossing her arms. I smirked, I knew that, I just wanted to see her lose her calm demeanor. A small smile tugged at Edward's lips.

"You're stench however, is revolting-"

"Dude, you really don't wanna start comparing stinks-"

"Why is everyone so dramatic?" I asked, rolling my eyes and gaining the attention of everyone gathered on the field. "You both smell bad, there. Now, let's focus on the task at hand."

They all wore varying offended expressions, and I sighed. I actually thought Jasper smelled quite wonderful, but nobody here needed to know that. They just needed to stop bickering like little girls and focus on what is actually important.

"This is not a good idea." Edward muttered, obviously not liking the way Jacob was looking at his girlfriend.

"You know it is." Is what Jasper came back with, "the newborns wouldn't want to come anywhere near their odor."

"Let's just try it." Bella walked from Edward's side, over to Jacob, who picked her up easily, bridal style. I quickly turned to face Jasper, standing on my tip-toes so I could wrap my arms around his shoulders, "please be safe."

"I always am."

My chest felt like a metal hand was clamped around my heart, and my throat constricted like I was going to cry. I took a series of deep breaths, trying to memorize every aspect of the boy in front of me. "Take care of Emmett."

His chest vibrated as he laughed, and for that one second, I could pretend everything was okay. Jasper pulled back, and he wiped one stray tear from my cheek. "The newborns should worry about me."

"So I don't have too."

He smiled, and I did my best to smile back, leaning in to press my lips to his. "I love you."

"I love you, too, Cordie."

If I didn't turn around right then, I would've burst into tears. Cordie, I don't think he has called me that since we first met. When everything was simple, and I was amazed at the prospect of another world. Now, it is like I can't tell which world is the one I belong in.

"We're not doing that shit, turn around."

Paul obliged, looking slightly relieved he didn't have to carry me like a bride in front of my intimidating vampire boyfriend. I jumped up, wrapping my arms around his middle, and his broad shoulders. "Are you okay?" He whispered softly, and I frowned.

"No... but I will be."

Edward turned to look at Jacob ith a stormy look in his eyes, and I gave Jasper a half-hearten salute, before he spoke the last words.

"Now, run."

That night, the Cullen's house was quiet.

in the entire house, it was only Edward, Bella, and I, since the others were God-knows where preparing for battle. I was in Alice's room, laying down on her couch and listening to music on her radio.

"Um, hi."

I sat up, blinking once and giving Edward a small grin. "Hi."

He took that as an opportunity to come in, because he did, perching on the edge of the couch next to me. "Um, I came to ask you something."

"Favor or question?"

"Question."

"Fire away." I leaned back on the pillows, giving Edward what I hope came off as an encouraging nod.

"You know that you're like a sister to me."

"Hm?" I sat up straighter. I mean, of course I see Edward a ton, but I have never been as close to him as I am with his siblings. Saying that, I can't imagine my life without him. "Of course."

"And you know I love Bella with all of my heart, and more."

"She doesn't need more, Edward." I smiled, lightly pushing his cold arm. He grinned, fidgeting lightly.

"I came to ask your blessing... to marry her."

Well shit. That wasn't what I was expecting at all. my mind had a mini-flashback that was just a slideshow of Edward and Bella. It was the way he looked at her that got me, like she was the sun, moon, and stars all rolled into one. Like she was all of the most beautiful things in the universe, in all of his years, in all of the places he's been, she is the highlight of all of his vacations... i know the feeling.

"Marry her?" I asked, considering how Bella would react to that. "Well, I have a condition."

"Anything." He leaned forward, and I grinned.

"I'm the maid of honor at the wedding?"

Edward's face broke into the biggest smile I have ever seen, "I don't technically get to pick that, but-"

"Shut up, loser, of course you have my blessing! That is so sweet!"

Edward jumped up, grabbing my hand, and pulling me into the biggest hug I have ever received. His cold, stiff arms wrapped around my middle, and I let out a breathy laugh, hugging him back with just as much ferocity. "Thank you, thank you."

"You're welcome."

We pulled away, and I eyed the box in his hands. "Normally I would ask to see the ring, but we don't have a moment to waste, now do we?"

Edward nodded, before literally sprinting out of the room. I shook my head, grinning widely.

Getting married. I thought, still beaming from the previous encounter. Maybe that is something I can add to my list of things to do while still human...

Yeah, I like the sound of that.

"A small drop... do either of you have anything sharp we could use to prick a finger or something?"

I actually laughed out loud, dry chuckles that made both Edward and Bella cast me weird looks. "Do I have something sharp." I mocked, before reaching into my pocket and withdrawing my knife, flicking the blade open. "Behold."

Bella jumped back slightly, gasping at how quickly I got it out, "Christ, Courtney... isn't that thing like, super dirty?"

"What do you think I'm an animal? I regularly clean my knife, because if you're gonna stab someone, do it with class."

They both couldn't seem to tell if I was joking or not.

I rolled my eyes, bringing the knife up and gently cutting into my finger. I winced deeply at the stinging sensation that shot up my finger, and the metallic scent that immediately invaded my nose.

I wiped the knife off on my shirt and passed it to Bella. "It's okay, we already share DNA."

Bella pricked her finger, and just like that, this all became real.
