Ch. 44
Hermione and Draco had spent the following week at the bungalow for the honeymoon, and she had never been happier than she was now. A month went by rather quickly, and while Hermione couldn't tell any changes, Draco slowly started to notice that she was acting different. It started with a few more yawns here and there, then a few after-work naps and being exhausted all the time. She was still in a happy mood, though, so he wasn't too concerned. Especially since he knew she had received a few more cases at work.
"Draco, love," She called out from the bathroom as she finished her makeup. "We need to get going soon. Blaise and Ginny are expecting us any second. Are you almost ready?"
"Just grabbing shoes," He called back.
She smiled to herself and cast another glance down at her wedding band that was set perfectly against her engagement ring. She still couldn't believe they were finally married, and that she was finally Mrs. Hermione Malfoy. The thought sent a surge of happiness through her and she smiled again as she stood up.
A wave of dizziness went through her and she stumbled forward, leaning against the wall for support as her vision started to black out slightly.
"Hermione?"
She waved him off and shook her head, taking a deep breath as the dizzy spell passed. "I'm okay, just...stood up too quickly."
He gave her a worried look and wrapped an arm around her waist. "Are you sure? You haven't had a dizzy spell in a while."
"No, but I also just stopped the potions that St. Mungo's gave me last week," She said thoughtfully, straightening herself up and smiling at him. "I'm okay, I promise."
He didn't say anything, still assessing her. She seemed so happy beforehand, and now she just looked exhausted. "Have you been sleeping alright, love?"
She shrugged and led them out of the bathroom. "I mean, I've been a little stressed lately with the cases but I've been sleeping through the night."
She chuckled at him and patted his chest. "Please don't worry, Draco. The Healers did say I might have these symptoms for a while after finishing the potions."
"And I'm not supposed to worry about it?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
"If it happens again tonight, then we will worry," She smiled.
"If it happens again tonight, I'm taking you right back to St. Mungo's," He said sternly.
She shook her head and sighed. "Come on; Ginny and Blaise are probably waiting."
Giving him a quick kiss on the lips and taking his hand, they apparated to the Zabini manor together, landing in the living room. The familiar nausea that came with apparating hit Hermione again, this time stronger than normal, but she was able to hide it easily as they walked into the kitchen to see Blaise and Ginny.
Ginny was sitting at the large kitchen table with a mug of tea in her hands while Blaise was busy cooking. Ginny beamed as she looked at the two of them, but then she frowned slightly as she looked at Hermione.
"Are you alright?" She asked, looking Hermione up and down. "You look like you haven't been sleeping."
Hermione rolled her eyes. "Merlin, I've been sleeping just fine! Everyone needs to stop worrying about me."
Blaise raised an eyebrow from behind Hermione and looked at Draco, who simply shrugged. Ginny stood up and put a hand up in defense. "Hermione, calm down. I'm just worried about you, I haven't seen you looking like this since the final exams at Hogwarts."
Hermione took a deep breath and sighed it out, nodding. "I'm fine, it's just the extra cases at work. It's two new ones that are pretty in-depth right now, and I'm working with Harry to try and figure out the best solution for the victims."
"Here, I think I have a wide-eye potion up in my bathroom," Ginny offered, nodding towards the stairs.
Hermione follow Ginny out of the kitchen and Blaise turned around to face Draco, who was leaning against the center island counter. "Well, that was rather odd."
Draco shook his head. "She's been exhausted recently. These cases have been taking a toll on her, and I'm pretty sure she's still got some curse damage."
"What makes you say that?" Blaise asked, grabbing two glasses of firewhiskey.
"She had another dizzy spell earlier," Draco answered quietly, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm really worried about her, Blaise."
"Just take her to go get checked out," Blaise suggested with a frown. "If she's still having issues, then maybe the damage is worse than they originally thought."
"She said that if it happens again, she'll worry," Draco sighed. "I don't know, Blaise. Everything was going just fine and she was getting better."
"Draco, you can't jump to conclusions right away. Just play it by ear and see what happens," Blaise said.
"What if she has a spell when I'm not there?" Draco wondered out loud before taking a sip of his firewhiskey. "I don't want to hover over her but..."
Blaise shook his head. "Mate, things are going to be alright. She hasn't changed as far as her personality goes; she still seems happy every day."
"She is happy, except for that small bit of frustration when we got here," Draco nodded. "She's just tired all the time now, and I've been chalking it up to work but after the dizzy spell today..."
He trailed off and they both looked up as the girls reappeared in the kitchen. Hermione felt much more rested after taking a small bit of the wide-eye potion, but the exhaustion was still lingering on the edge of her mind. She ignored it though and smiled at Draco, giving him a kiss on the cheek before following Ginny to the kitchen table and grabbing a mug of tea.
"How have you been doing lately, Gin?" Draco asked with a smile.
Ginny rubbed her stomach and answered, "I've been tired lately, but good!"
"Only a few more weeks until you find out the genders, right?" Hermione asked.
"Yeah, I'm eleven weeks and they want us to go in at sixteen weeks," Ginny sighed. "I'm just ready to find out, I want to start deciding names."
"Well, nothing is technically stopping you from deciding," Hermione shrugged.
"We just don't want to get attached to names only for them to not be able to be used," Blaise said from the stove.
Hermione shrugged. "So just pick four names that you like, two boy and two girl names, and that way you have every option covered."
Ginny tilted her head back and forth. "That's actually not a bad idea."
Hermione smiled before taking a sip of her tea. "But other than that, everything's alright? No nausea or anything?"
"Surprisingly no," Ginny said. "I'm sure it'll happen soon though, I've already got a much more heightened smell. Sometimes even better than Blaise's."
"That's saying something," Draco muttered, causing everyone to laugh.
An hour later, they were finishing up eating. Everyone was smiling and in a good mood all throughout dinner. Hermione had just finished her plate, reaching to grab Draco's as she stood up.
"I can get them, love," Draco said.
She smiled and shook her head. "It's alright!"
They shared a smile and she began walking to the sink with both plates in her hands. Draco turned back to look at the other two when he felt something was off, followed by the sound of plates shattering on the floor.
"Hermione!"
Draco was by her side in an instant, catching her before she hit the ground. Her face was pale and she shut her eyes with a groan.
"Go take her to St. Mungo's," Ginny ordered quickly.
"I'm...fine!" Hermione groaned again. "Just a dizzy-"
Draco didn't let her finish her sentence, immediately disapparating them to St. Mungo's. He picked her up and cradled her tightly against his chest, carrying her into the hospital quickly.
Before the Welcome Witch could even say anything, he was at the front desk. "I need Healers at the Malfoy suite now!"
The older witch behind the desk stared at him for a few moments before nodding and sending off a paper memo, which soared away around the corner. She looked back at them and said, "The Healers will be here in a few moments to escort you."
"Can I not go myself?" He asked in annoyance. "I know how to get there, and she needs to be looked at immediately."
The Witch simply stared at him, noticing his eyes turning darker by the second. Hermione shifted in his arms and caught his attention by gently resting her hand on his chest.
"Draco, be nice," She muttered, her eyes still closed.
"I am being nice," He said quietly, kissing the top of her head.
She smiled slightly before her face contorted into a painful expression and she sighed deeply. "I have to buy Ginny new plates."
"You know she can just repair them," Draco said in confusion.
She was silent for a few moments. "Oh...yeah."
"Alright, my wife has forgotten she can do magic," Draco muttered to himself. He couldn't hide a grin as he felt her hand tap his chest in an attempt at smacking him.
"Don't you dare make fun of me, Draco Malfoy," He heard her grumble.
Moments later, Healers appeared in front of them. They reached out for Hermione, only to be met with Draco growling at them and holding her closer against him.
"Alright, that's enough!"
The main Healer from their last visit suddenly pushed her way forward, scowling at them. When she saw Hermione, she frowned and motioned for Draco to follow her. Draco did silently, clutching Hermione close to him.
"What is going on?" The Healer asked, looking back at Draco as they stepped into the elevator.
"She has had two dizzy spells today," Draco explained. "She's been growing more and more exhausted the past month, and her potions ran out last week."
The Healer frowned, and Hermione interrupted them with a wave. "I'm fine, I'm probably just overstressed from work."
Draco rolled his eyes and the elevator came to a stop. He followed the Healer out and around the corner, making their way down the hallway towards the private suites. When they got into the room, Draco immediately went to lay her down on the bed, sitting next to her and moving the hair out of her face.
"How are you feeling?" He asked quietly.
She smiled up at him. "I feel a lot better now, I just got lightheaded."
Draco raised an eyebrow at her but didn't say anything as the Healer came back to the bed and waved her wand over Hermione. "Are there any other symptoms that you've been experiencing lately besides exhaustion?"
Hermione shook her head. "I mean, I did have some cramps a few days ago but that's normal for this time."
The Healer nodded then as Draco gave them a confused look, but he didn't say anything, realizing what they were talking about after a few moments. After finishing the initial exam, the Healer stepped out of the room and left the two of them alone.
"You're sure you're okay?" Draco asked quietly.
She nodded. "I promise. You shouldn't be worrying so much."
He cracked a smile and gently smoothed her hair back. "You're the one who is supposed to be worried; this is happening to you."
"I've been through worse," She said quietly.
He shook his head and they were interrupted by Blaise and Ginny knocking on the door. Ginny immediately rushed over to her bed and exclaimed, "Are you alright? You had us so worried!"
Hermione laughed as Ginny threw her arms around her neck, patting her friend's shoulder. "Gin, the baby! You shouldn't rush anywhere right now!"
"Oh hush, I'm only eleven weeks; I'm not incapable!" Ginny grinned as she pulled away. "And I'm also not the one collapsing in my kitchen!"
Hermione shook her head. "I feel fine, I promise. The Healer left not too long ago so we should have results soon hopefully."
Blaise reached down to squeeze her leg. "Just promise us that next time you'll let Draco get the plates."
Everyone chuckled at this, and quickly changed the subject to keep their minds off of what was happening with Hermione. She was grateful for this, as she was very worried that the curse damage was worse than they expected, and that it had only gotten worse. Draco shared her worries as well, only his were more fueled by what it could be other than curse damage.
They didn't have to wait long to find out, as the same Healer returned not too long after, with a large smile on her face. "Well, I have good news."
She crossed the room and stopped at the foot of the bed, looking around at everyone. "Good to see you, Mr. and Mrs. Zabini."
Ginny and Blaise both nodded while Hermione asked, "What is the good news?"
The Healer returned her attention to the brunette and said, "The good news is that you have no traces of curse damage left in your body."
"That's wonderful!" Hermione exclaimed happily.
Draco grinned and gave her a side hug before looking at the Healer. "So, do you know what caused her symptoms earlier then?"
"I do," The Healer nodded, her grin widening. "Congratulations: you are four weeks pregnant!"
