Ch. 31
The sound of the lock clicking open immediately woke Draco up and he lifted his head off the pillow, growling at the door. With Hermione still fast asleep in his arms, he was on high alert for anything.
He relaxed though when he saw that it was only his parents, who had rushed past the Healer that had unlocked the door.
"Is she alright?" Narcissa asked hurriedly as she crossed the room. "Thank goodness she's alive!"
"She's going to be just fine, Mr and Mrs Malfoy," The Healer said in a reassuring voice as she closed the door and slowly walked towards the bed. "I'm glad to see that she's finally resting."
"She wanted to make sure her friend was alright first," Draco said pointedly. "Ginny would've done the same thing, honestly."
The Healer pursed her lips and sighed. "I understand, but now they are both resting and that's what's important. Do you need anything?"
Draco shook his head and the Healer nodded, letting herself out of the room and leaving the four of them alone. Lucius pulled his cloak off and hung it along with Narcissa's on the rack before levitating the two arm chairs over to the foot of the bed. Draco carefully readjusted himself so that he was sitting up against the headboard with Hermione still resting on his chest, and he was still able to talk to his parents.
"How is she?" Lucius asked quietly as he sat down.
"Strong as ever, but definitely in need of healing," Draco replied, casting a quick glance down at his mate. "She took at least eight Cruciatus curses and a few Stunners, as well as some handiwork from Rodolphus Lestrange's blade. I'm surprised she isn't worse off, honestly."
Narcissa's hand went over her mouth in shock while Lucius's mouth formed a thin line. "There are going to be severe consequences for what they have done to my future daughter-in-law."
"We don't need to worry about them anymore," Draco said quietly, looking away towards the fireplace.
There was silence while his words hung in the air, and Narcissa gasped suddenly. "Draco, you didn't!"
"I had to!" He answered angrily.
"Who all did you kill?" Lucius asked in a surprisingly calm voice, leaning back into the chair.
"Alecto Carrow and Rodolphus," Draco answered. "Blaise took care of Amycus Carrow and Walden Macnair."
Lucius was silent for a few moments before nodding. "I'm sure you weren't completely in control at the time."
Narcissa glared at her husband. "That doesn't excuse this!"
Then she glared at Draco, leaning forward slightly. "Do you understand the consequences of what you've done? I tried hard to keep you from becoming a killer, Draco, and now-"
"And now when they threatened to kill my mate, thereby also possibly killing me, I had to take action," Draco interrupted quietly. "Mother, the Minister of Magic was there when it happened, and he is very understanding about the situation. Harry also said that he would do what he could to keep me from being affected by it."
Narcissa opened and closed her mouth, as if she were trying to come up with an argument. Finally she sighed and put her forehead in her hand. "Fine, just...don't do it again."
Draco grinned. "I only would if they threaten her again."
They fell into silence, with only the sound of the crackling fire filling the room. Lucius finally sighed after a few moments and asked, "How is Ginny doing?"
"She's got a broken leg and didn't get tortured as much as Hermione did," Draco asked. "They're in the Zabini suite if you want to go visit them."
"We might do that later," Lucius nodded. "Do Hermione's parents know what's happened?"
Draco looked down at Hermione. "I'm actually not sure. I believe they're off travelling right now and she didn't want to worry them."
Narcissa frowned. "They don't know at all?"
"I don't think so," Draco shrugged slightly. "I can always ask her when she wakes up."
"How long has she been asleep?" Lucius asked curiously.
Draco looked up at the clock and did some quick math. "Looks like about three and a half hours. She really didn't want to take the draught."
"I bet she needed it, though," Narcissa commented.
There was a sudden knock at the door and Draco growled slightly before he could stop himself. Lucius tutted at him as he stood from the chair and said, "Come now, Draco. No need for that, she is safe."
Draco quieted down but still glared at the door as his father crossed the room and unlocked the door to reveal Harry, Ron, and Kingsley Shacklebolt standing behind them.
"Good evening, Lucius," The Minister greeted with a nod of his head. "These two and I wanted to check in on Hermione and see how she is doing."
Lucius nodded and moved to the side to allow them in while saying, "She seems to be alright, though she is asleep right now."
They entered the room and Ron frowned at the sight of Hermione on Draco's chest but he stayed silent as Kingsley shut and locked the door behind them.
"Were you able to locate the two remaining Death Eaters?" Draco asked, nodding towards Harry and Ron.
Harry shook his head and sighed. "There was no one else in the house, unfortunately."
"Who is left?" Narcissa asked, standing up.
"Dolohov and Rabastan Lestrange, Rodolphus's brother," Draco growled.
"And Hermione mentioned that Alecto said they had infiltrated the Ministry," Ron added. "We don't know where or how yet."
"I am already discussing with the Head Auror on how we can possibly weed them out," Kingsley said.
"That's good to hear," Lucius said. "If there's anything Narcissa and I can do to help..."
"That is greatly appreciated, thank you," Kingsley nodded. Then he straightened up slightly and cleared his throat. "There is another reason that I am here, however."
Draco's stomach fell and he bit his lip as Kingsley looked directly at him. "Draco, while I was there and I understand the reasoning behind your killing Alecto Carrow and Rodolphus Lestrange, unfortunately you did interfere with Ministry work and prevented us from bringing them in. Now, this is not me speaking. This is the Wizengamot, and I will be having a talk with Mister Zabini as well."
The knot in Draco's stomach grew larger.
"But..."
Everyone was looking at Kingsley now, and he gave a small smile. "I believe there are a few ancient laws regarding Veelas that rule in your favors. And while you will still need to appear before the Wizengamot, I wouldn't worry too much."
Breathing a sigh of relief, Draco nodded. "Thank you, Minister."
Kingsley nodded in return and smiled. "Now, I think it's time we go see how Miss Weasley is doing."
"Zabini," Draco corrected.
Kingsley's eyes widened slightly and he tilted his head in surprise. "Really? Well, I believe a congratulations is in order for her then!"
Ron frowned but again didn't say anything as they said their goodbyes and left the room, silently making their way towards the Zabini suite. After knocking on the door and waiting patiently, they heard the door unlock and Blaise soon opened the door.
"Oh, hi there!" He greeted happily, grinning at all of them and letting them in.
"You seem to be in a good mood," Ron remarked, raising an eyebrow at the Veela.
Blaise paused for a moment and then shrugged as he shut the door. "Just happy to have Ginny back."
Harry and Ron stopped at the foot of the bed, eyeing Ginny's leg. Ron nodded towards the bandages and asked, "How are you feeling?"
"Relatively well," Ginny answered with a smile as Blaise sat on the bed next to her. "They said it should be perfectly healed by tomorrow."
"That's good," Harry said, smiling slightly at her. "Did they say when you're being released?"
Ginny shook her head. "They want to keep me here for a few more days at least to make sure there isn't any lasting curse damage."
"Mum wants to come visit you," Ron said. "She's been worrying her head off."
"Tell her not to worry, I'm perfectly fine," Ginny said with a wave of her hand. "They should be more worried about Hermione."
"Yeah, we've already visited her," Harry nodded. "She was fast asleep from a draught."
"Oh good, she did take it," Blaise commented. "She was being pretty stubborn about it."
"That's Hermione," Ron said with a smile.
Everyone shared a laugh at that. Ron then asked, "So, why didn't you get put under a Sleeping Draught to recover like Hermione was?"
Ginny shrugged. "She took a lot more of the torturing than I did."
"Why were they targeting you two?" Harry asked curiously.
"We weren't the actual targets," Ginny explained sadly. "We were just a lure."
Harry and Ron looked at each other before Ron asked, "Who were the real targets then?"
"Harry and the Malfoys were," She answered grimly. "They decided to kidnap Hermione and I because we were the closest people that could bring in all of you at once."
"That's very concerning," Kingsley interjected. "Why would they want to bring in Harry and the Malfoys?"
Ginny looked over at the Minister and frowned slightly. "Hermione said they were wanted to seek revenge on the ones they believe are directly responsible for Voldemort's downfall."
Kingsley frowned. "Well, hopefully with the ringleaders of this little group dead, the problem is taken care of for the most part. We just need to bring in the remaining two Death Eaters."
"Is there a plan for that?" Blaise asked.
"There is a plan in the works, yes," Kingsley nodded before looking at Ginny. "But for right now, you and Hermione need to focus on recovering. We will take care of the two remaining Death Eaters."
Ginny nodded and sighed. "I will be happy when this is all over."
Blaise pressed a kiss to her forehead and nodded in agreement. Then he looked up at the Minister and nervously asked, "I'm assuming there are going to be consequences for mine and Draco's actions at the Riddle House?"
Kingsley smiled at him. "You beat me to the subject, Mister Zabini. The Wizengamot has requested that you and Draco appear before them, but as I told Draco, there are older laws that will most likely turn in your favor. This is simply procedure."
Blaise nodded but Ginny could feel the nervousness racing through him. She cleared her throat and announced, "Alright, I think I'm going to get some rest now. I'll reach out to Mum tomorrow and let her know I'm alright."
Ron nodded and squeezed her good leg. "I'm sure the whole family will want to come see you."
She grinned. "We'll see; I may need to take them in one by one."
"I'll make sure they don't go too crazy," Ron laughed. "See you tomorrow, Gin."
She waved at the three men leaving and leaned back into her pillows as Blaise locked the door and raised an eyebrow at her. "I thought you weren't tired?"
"I'm not," She grinned. "I'm just tired of other people being in here; I want some time with my husband."
He laughed at her and rejoined her on the bed, holding her face in his hands. "You are without a doubt one of the most amazing witches in the world."
She blushed and leaned into one of his hands, smiling at him. "I love you."
"I love you too, Ginny."
