Ch. 29
Ginny stared at the door that Blaise had walked through, an unbelievable weight of disappointment and sadness hitting her. She actually wished to be back in that room chained to the wall; that would've been more forgiving.
And the emotions she was feeling from Blaise confused her even more; there was worry, nervousness, and guilt? Why guilt?
Draco immediately held out a hand to try and calm Ginny. "I'm going to go talk to him; please don't overthink this. I'll be right back."
"How am I not supposed to overthink this?" Ginny asked, heartbroken. "He just figured out he's going to be a father and he walks out?!"
Hermione reached over and took Ginny's hand, squeezing it. "Let Draco talk to him and figure out what's going on."
"I know what's going on!" Ginny lamented, laying her head back against the pillows and staring up at the ceiling, tears forming in her eyes. "I can feel his emotions; he's not excited at all!"
She squeezed her eyes shut and Hermione looked up at Draco with a worried expression. Draco nodded and immediately left the room, stepping out into the hallway and finding an exasperated Blaise pacing back and forth.
"What the hell was that?" Draco demanded after shutting the door.
Blaise didn't answer, his eyes wide as he stared at the floor, still pacing back and forth down the hallway. His hands were firmly thrust into his pockets and he was breathing hard.
"Blaise," Draco tried again, leaning down to try to meet his friend's eyes. He stood up immediately though when he realized that Blaise's eyes were turning black again. "Blaise, she's safe. She's in that room right now, waiting for you to go back in there. And I think you should."
"I..." Blaise paused and finally stopped pacing. "She's pregnant, mate."
"I know that, Blaise," Draco said. "I was in the room when she said it."
"Draco." Blaise turned around and faced him, a wild expression on his face. "They tortured her, while she was carrying my child. They tortured my wife. My mate."
Draco held up his hands in defense, feeling the combative energy coming from Blaise. "Calm down, Blaise. They aren't around to hurt her any longer. And frankly, you walking out of that room hurt her worse than they ever could."
Blaise paused at this and took a few deep breaths. He realized just how badly she was hurting now, feeling the sorrow and hearing her cry from the other side of the closed door. He rubbed the back of his neck and groaned. "I just panicked...I've really messed up this time, haven't I?"
"Well there's a quick way to fix it."
When Draco left the room, Hermione turned back to Ginny and moved so that she was sitting next to her friend, giving her hand another squeeze. "It's going to be alright, Ginny."
Ginny looked up and glared at her through tear-soaked eyes. "How do you know?"
"Because if Blaise wasn't committed to this, he would've left the building by now," Hermione said calmly. "Just calm down; he's right outside the room and Draco went to talk to him."
Ginny couldn't stop the tears as she laid back into the pillows, covering her face with her hands. "He left, Hermione! He just walked out the door!"
"I know," Hermione said, putting a hand on her friend's arm. "But he's still here. This was probably a shock to him; his wife is pregnant with his child, and he's just finding this out after getting her back from being kidnapped. You're overthinking this majorly."
"He feels guilty, Hermione," Ginny said quietly.
"That could be guilt about not being able to protect you both," Hermione answered.
Ginny didn't respond, dropping her arms down to her sides. "This wasn't how I imagined this going. I was hoping that...I don't know, I thought he would be happy."
The door opened suddenly and Draco led a very sorrowful looking Blaise inside the room. Ginny quickly wiped her eyes and turned her head so that she was facing the wall away from Blaise. Draco went to Hermione and took her hand, pulling up on it slightly to get her off the bed.
"Come on," He said quietly. "We're going to let them talk. We'll be right outside."
Hermione nodded and squeezed Ginny's non-broken leg before following Draco out of the room. Blaise sat on the edge of the bed where Hermione previously sat, watching Ginny quietly. She avoided his eyes, still staring away at the wall and trying to hold back tears.
"Ginny," He started in a quiet voice.
She sniffed and he sighed, looking down at his hands that were clasped in his lap. "I'm sorry I walked out. It was a sudden shock and there were a lot of thoughts going through my head and emotions that I was feeling."
"I know," Ginny answered angrily. "I felt them too."
Blaise grimaced. "I didn't want to hurt you with this. I'm just...I'm scared."
"And you think I'm not?" Ginny asked, finally turning to look at him with glaring eyes. "I just watched my husband walk out of the room after finding out he was going to be a father, do you have any idea what that did to me?"
"I panicked, and made the wrong choice," Blaise explained calmly, looking up at her. "But I'm here now, and I want to be here."
"How am I supposed to believe that?" Ginny demanded. "How do I know that you won't panic and leave again?"
"I panicked mostly because I have no idea what to expect," Blaise answered. He took a deep breath and sighed it out. "Lucius was the closest thing I had to a father growing up; my mother's husbands were never exactly fatherly so I had really no idea what to expect, and this was very sudden news. I wasn't sure if I was going to be a good father to our child, because I don't have many examples to go off of. But I don't want to let my fears get in the way of that anymore. I'm ready to do this, and I'm ready to do it with you and to show you that I will always be here."
Ginny looked at him quietly, realizing that he was being sincere. She swallowed the lump in her throat and quietly asked, "So, you're not upset about the pregnancy?"
"Ginny, the only things I'm upset about is that I wasn't able to protect you and our child from the Death Eaters, and that I let my fears get to me," Blaise replied, reaching out and taking her hand.
She smiled. "I'm sorry I overreacted a bit."
"It's my fault," Blaise shook his head. "But I am truly happy about this."
They smiled at each other for a few moments before Ginny sighed and said, "I guess we should bring Hermione and Draco back in, and we need to get one of the Healers. They wanted to give me a full examination for the baby and I want both of them here."
Blaise's smile faltered slightly as he looked down at her stomach. "Did the baby receive any damage?"
She shook her head. "They only gave a small examination but they said everything looked okay from that. The full one should give us more information."
He frowned at that and stood up. "I'll go get everyone."
Ginny nodded and he reluctantly let go of her hand to walk to the door. He opened it and found Draco and Hermione sitting just outside of the door with one of the Healers trying to convince them to go back to their room.
"Actually," Blaise interrupted, "My wife has requested that they stay for the examination, which she is ready for."
The Healer looked at him with confusion for a moment before her eyes widening with understanding and she nodded. "Alright; I need to fetch one of the other Healers to assist with the examination and we will be right in."
She walked away then and Blaise opened the door wider for Hermione and Draco to walk in, a sudden smile hitting his face. "Merlin's beard, I'm going to be a father!"
Draco laughed at this and clapped his friend on the shoulder. "Yes, you are!"
Hermione laughed as well, but her laugh was cut off by a large pillow suddenly hitting her in the face. She stumbled back slightly but scowled at Ginny, who was grinning at her.
"That's for taking curses for me!" Ginny stated.
"I suppose it's better than the beater's bat you originally threatened me with," Hermione grinned, tossing the pillow back to her friend.
Ginny laughed. "Yes well, I'd rather no more harm come to the future godmother of my child."
Hermione paused and stared at her. "Future godmother? Ginny, are you sure?"
"Are you kidding?" Ginny asked, raising an eyebrow. "Of course I'm sure! There's no one else I'd rather have be godmother!"
Jumping up and down in excitement, Hermione squealed happily. "I'm so happy about this!"
Draco laughed at her and shook his head. Blaise then put an arm around the blond's shoulder and said, "And you'll be godfather, of course!"
Draco looked up at him in surprise and then he looked at Ginny. "Are you sure? You don't want one of your brothers being godfather?"
Ginny shook her head and smiled. "I'm perfectly happy with Blaise's decision of making you godfather. You'd be wonderful, and it makes more sense to have you since Hermione is godmother."
They were interrupted by two Healers entering the room, smiling at the four of them. "Alright, Mrs. Zabini, I understand you're ready for the full maternity examination?"
"Yes," Ginny said with a nod. Blaise sat on the bed next to her and took her hand as she said this.
The Healer nodded in response and went to the other side of the bed, reaching for the hem of Ginny's shirt. Blaise let out a low growl and the Healer paused, looking up at him while her mouth formed a thin line.
"Mr. Zabini, I understand that she is your mate, but we need to properly examine the baby and make sure that there is no curse damage," The Healer stated in an exasperated tone. "If you continue to growl at every aspect of the examination, I will have to ask you to leave."
Ginny looked at him and glared. "Be nice."
He quieted down and nodded, muttering a quick apology. The Healer nodded in response and continued to lift up Ginny's shirt to just below her chest. "Now, have you had any symptoms so far?"
"Mood swings, definitely," Ginny said sheepishly, casting a glance to Hermione who simply shook her head. "Other than that, nothing else that I've really noticed."
"And I understand you took three Cruciatus curses?" The Healer asked.
Ginny nodded sadly. The Healer frowned at this and pulled out her wand, gently placing the tip against Ginny's stomach. There was silence for a while, and then there was the sudden sound of a faint heartbeat. Ginny's eyes lit up and she looked at Blaise excitedly, who was staring at her stomach.
"Heartbeat sounds normal for how far along you are," The Healer stated somewhat happily. "That's a good sign."
"How far along is she?" Blaise asked in wonder.
"Just over four weeks," The Healer answered, giving him a smile before returning her attention back to Ginny's stomach.
She moved her wand over to the other side of Ginny's stomach, humming in confusion after a while. Ginny gave her a nervous look and asked, "Is everything alright?"
The Healer didn't answer for a few moments, and then she removed her wand, lowering Ginny's shirt again. "Yes, so far I am not finding any curse damage with the baby, but unfortunately it is still early and problems could develop."
Blaise could feel the nervousness take over Ginny and he squeezed her hand as the Healer wrote a few things down on Ginny's notes. "I'm going to give you a couple of potions just in case to stave off any potential damage to you and the baby."
She then set a hand on Ginny's leg and gave her a reassuring smile. "Don't worry too much, dear. We'll make sure that you and your baby are in perfect health soon."
Ginny nodded but her nervousness didn't fade as the Healers walked out of the room. Blaise watched her quietly, wishing he could help alleviate her fears but feeling fearful himself, if he was honest.
Hermione sat down on the edge of the bed again and smiled at Ginny, trying to distract her friend. "So when do you think you're going to tell your family?"
Ginny groaned. "I completely forgot about that."
"Well, luckily Ron doesn't know so there's no chance he's going to accidentally tell them first," Hermione offered.
"True." Ginny chewed on the inside of her cheek. "Well, it's going to be an interesting day anyway, because they're also going to find out we got married."
"You could still do what we talked about," Hermione said. "Do your formal wedding for everyone before you start showing."
"That's not a bad idea," Blaise muttered, nudging her. "I wouldn't mind doing that."
She looked up at him and frowned. "Are you sure?"
He smiled at her. "If that would make you happy, then it will make me happy. Besides, I'm already married to you; another wedding doesn't change anything."
She smiled and turned back to Hermione. "Alright, hopefully we can get everything put together soon so that I don't have to hide it for long."
Draco appeared next to Hermione and rested a hand on her shoulder, and she leaned back into him and sighed as she said, "Just let me know what I can do to help and I'll be there!"
Ginny grinned. "And after that, we will be one-hundred percent focused on your wedding!"
Hermione laughed. "If Lucius doesn't have it planned already!"
"Hey!" Draco huffed defensively. "He's left a few decisions for you!"
The four of them burst into laughter, a genuine happiness filling the air for the first time in a while.
