Ch. 25
Draco and Blaise were leaning against the back wall of the meeting room they had all gathered in previously, still gathering stares from their fully black eyes and stern demeanors. Draco watched Harry yawn from across the room and take a long drink of what was probably his fourth cup of coffee that morning. Ron looked as if he was about to fall asleep with his head propped up on the palm of his hand, but a quick nudge from Harry jolted him awake. It reminded Draco of their days at Hogwarts, and would've made him chuckle if he wasn't so focused at that moment.
They had flown nearly all over the lower half of the main island, having to turn back as soon as they got to Manchester so that they would have made it back to the Ministry in time before anyone suspected anything. Blaise almost didn't go back with them, having slightly felt Ginny's presence just on the edge of his. And when Draco confirmed he could just barely feel Hermione, it gave them hope that they were getting closer.
The downside to this was that it only brought out their Veelas more, and Draco was having a hard time controlling his. He knew Blaise was too, as the wizard next to him would constantly shift his weight from foot to foot and couldn't seem to stop moving. Draco was filled with nervous energy and the need to go back out and find his mate.
"Alright," Daniels started in a loud voice, catching everyone's attention. "Let's get started. Hopefully all of you got some rest last night."
There was a murmur around the room and Draco scoffed slightly, shifting his weight again for the thousandth time that morning. He didn't see why he and Blaise had to be there instead of out searching, but Kingsley had insisted that they needed to be there for the planning so that they 'could add their input since it's such a close matter to them'.
To Draco, that essentially translated to he and Blaise being kept under supervision so they wouldn't go on a rampage, which he overheard Daniels express concern about the day before in private to the Minister.
"Now, today we should spread out our search further, to possibly Scotland and Ireland," Daniels stated. "We need to consider all possibilities-"
"Might I suggest, sir," Draco started curtly, "That we instead look more north of here; around Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds."
Daniels raised an eyebrow at the blond Veela, his brow furrowing in slight annoyance at being interrupted. "And what information do you have that makes us want to start there specifically?"
"Well," Draco looked over at Blaise who nodded before continuing, "Last night, while everyone was sent home to rest, Blaise and I took it upon ourselves to continue the search."
Everyone was listening intently to them, and Kingsley had a slight smile on his face. Blaise picked up where Draco left off and added, "We were just nearing Manchester when we caught the girls just on the edge of our range. We unfortunately had to turn back, but we feel they are at least within a hundred kilometers of Manchester, so that is a starting range."
Daniels sighed and nodded. "At least we have that to go off of now."
"That's still such a large area though," One of the other Aurors piped up. He cast a nervous glance to the two Veelas and then looked back at the Head Auror. "How are we even going to know where to look?"
"Hermione said that she was in a locked room with stone walls and dirt floors," Draco answered before Daniels could. "I would say we're probably looking for a place that looks abandoned, probably an old home that belonged to a wealthy pureblood family. They wouldn't use anything related to muggles."
"How can you be certain of that?" Daniels asked in a skeptical tone.
Draco grinned menacingly, and Blaise could tell his friend was getting very agitated. "No offense, sir, but I worked in close quarters with these people. They view muggles as the scum of the Earth, and would not use anything that was built by a muggle. It would be beneath them in their minds."
Daniels glared at Draco but conceded, nodding and sighing while straightening up. "Alright then, we look for wealthy manors in that area. You'll be split into the same teams as you were yesterday."
There was another murmur around the room as every stood up and split into the same pairs as they had yesterday. Harry and Ron both made their way over to the Veelas and Harry stuffed his hands in his pockets.
"I think today the four of us need to travel together," He said quietly, trying to make sure that no one else in the room could overhear them.
Draco nodded and they began making their way out of the room together, walking down the hallway and into Harry's office. Harry shut the door behind them and ran a hand through his hair.
"Do you two still have your brooms?" He asked, nodding towards Draco and Blaise.
They both nodded and Draco said, "We shrunk them so that they would fit in our pockets."
"Good idea," Harry said, almost surprised. Then he moved to the tall file cabinet at the back of the room and opened the bottom drawer, pulling out both his and Ron's brooms. At the surprised looks of Blaise and Draco, Harry smiled. "Hermione put an extending charm on my cabinets."
"She seems to really like that charm," Blaise remarked with a laugh.
Harry and Ron both shrugged while Harry gestured towards the door. "Alright, let's get going."
Before they could leave, a sudden silvery light burst through the wall and stopped in the middle of the four of them. Draco's heart jumped when he saw Hermione's otter staring up at him.
"Draco, I have to be really quick about this, but we are at the Riddle house, where Voldemort killed his father. I'm not sure where exactly it is, but Harry might know!"
A sudden rush of energy hit Draco at this news and he felt the need to take of flying, but he paused when he realized he wasn't exactly sure where the Riddle house was. The confused look on Harry's face when he looked up at him wasn't comforting either, but Harry looked as if he were trying to remember.
"Also, there's a traitor in the Ministry who is in direct contact with the Death Eaters. So far we've only seen Alecto and Rodolphus, and I'm not sure who all else is here. Ginny and I are going to try to escape while we can, and hopefully we'll get away unscathed. Please hurry!"
The otter disappeared into the air, leaving the four of them in silence. Harry immediately looked up and said, "We have to get Shacklebolt. Now!"
They rushed out of Harry's office and back to the room where they all met. There were still a few Aurors in the room, along with Daniels and Kingsley. They all looked up at the group in surprise as they rushed back into the room.
"Sir, we need you to come with us right now," Harry said in a surprisingly calm voice.
Kingsley looked back at Daniels and nodded, following the four of them out of the room again. As soon as they had entered the hallway and the door shut, Harry whirled around and pointed his wand at the Minister's throat.
"Harry, what-" Kingsley started in a shocked tone.
"What were the last words that Albus Dumbledore said to both you and Remus Lupin?" Harry demanded quietly.
Kingsley's expression hardened and he tilted his head down, saying in a low voice, "'Harry is the best hope we have. Trust him.'"
Harry lowered his wand and nodded, turning back around and leading them to his office again. Kingsley was silent the entire time, while Blaise and Draco both looked at each other, wondering what had just happened. When they stepped into Harry's office and shut the door, Draco immediately asked, "Mind if I ask what that was?"
"A way of validating my identity," Kingsley answered, turning to face the two Veelas. "It was a method we used during the war when Voldemort was actively hunting Harry. Since we were betrayed, we couldn't trust anyone and had to ensure we have questions that only the true person would know the answer to."
Then Kingsley turned to Harry and asked, "I'm assuming we have another traitor in our midst?"
Harry nodded. "We received another Patronus from Hermione, letting us know they were at the Riddle house and that there was a Death Eater among us. She's only seen Alecto and Rodolphus, so realistically it could be Rabastan or Dolohov since Macnair is dead and we have Rowle in custody already."
"Macnair is dead?" Kingsley asked in surprise.
The other three all looked at Blaise, who looked down at the floor sheepishly. "There's more important things to worry about right now."
"Right," Draco said in agreement, looking at Harry. "Hermione said you might know where the Riddle house is. Do you?"
Harry sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "I remember looking at it while in the cemetery when Voldemort returned in fourth year. But I don't remember the name of the town...it was a small town though."
Ron then looked over at his friend. "Didn't you say that Dumbledore was showing you different memories about Voldemort's past during sixth year?"
Harry nodded, his brow furrowed in concentration as he tried to remember. Draco started pacing anxiously, the strange energy still coursing through his veins. Blaise was also pacing slightly, and Kingsley watched them curiously.
"That's it!"
Everyone jumped and looked at Harry, whose eyes had gone wide with realization. "Little Hangleton! They're in Little Hangleton!"
"Where is Little Hangleton?" Blaise asked, the energy rising in him as well.
"Just outside of Yorkshire," Kingsley answered.
Without another word, Draco and Blaise ran out of the office, leaving Harry, Ron, and Kingsley behind. Harry sighed and rolled his eyes. "Come on, let's make sure they don't destroy anything."
They chased after the two Veelas for a few minutes, finding themselves all on the roof of the Ministry building. Kingsley looked around in confusion and asked, "Why would they go up here?"
"We have brooms, sir," Harry explained. "That's how we did our searching early this morning. We took off from the roof."
They fell silent as Ron held out a hand to grab their attention, staring at the two Veelas. Draco and Blaise were standing on the edge of the rooftop, not moving. Kingsley leaned down and asked quietly, "They aren't going to jump, are they?"
Harry shook his head. "I hope not. They didn't do this yesterday..."
They all froze as Draco let out a howl of pain, falling to his knees and groaning. Blaise leaned against a nearby railing, gripping it tightly as he also yelled through gritted teeth.
Draco felt as if something was trying to rip out of his shoulder blades, slamming his fist against the ground in pain. It was almost as bad as the Cruciatus curse, but he could actually feel his back and shoulders contorting. He almost didn't hear Blaise yelling as well over his own yells, but as he looked up, he saw two large humps slowly coming out of Blaise's back.
"What is happening?!" Ron exclaimed, pulling his wand out and pointing it between the two Veelas.
Draco yelled again as the pain grew worse, his back nearly ripping apart. There was a sudden weight as he felt his shirt rip in the back, and two large objects protruding from his back nearly sent him forward from the sheer weight of them. He panted as the pain slowly started to subside, but as he looked over his shoulder he froze.
He had grown a pair of large, black feathered wings.
Looking over at Blaise in shock, he realized that Blaise had also grown a pair of black wings. Draco attempted to stand up slowly, trying to get used to the new weight that was on his back. Blaise was slowly moving his wings in and out, marveling at them.
"This is wicked, mate," Blaise said, shaking his head. "Can you move yours?"
Draco concentrated and found his wings moving with ease at the simple thought. It was as if his body already knew what to do.
"You had wings the entire time?!"
They both looked over to see Ron, Harry, and Kingsley staring at them with a mixture of horror and amazement. Ron took a breath and yelled, "When were you going to tell us this?!"
"We didn't know we could produce them!" Blaise exclaimed.
Draco reached into his pocket and pulled out the shrunken broomstick from his pocket and restored it to its original size, handing it to Kingsley. "I suppose I won't be needing this anymore, sir."
Kingsley cautiously took the broom from him, his eyes still glued to the large wings that practically loomed over Draco. The wings were taller than him, almost taller than Kingsley. But currently they were folded neatly behind Draco, twitching every so often.
"Can you two fly with those?" Kingsley asked, nodding towards their wings.
Draco looked back at Blaise and grinned. "Only one way to find out."
Blaise grinned in return and the two Veelas took off running towards the edge of the building. Their wings unfurled behind them and they jumped off the edge, soaring down as the other three raced to the edge. Draco and Blaise's wings caught the wind and they flew off, their wings beating every so often to keep them afloat.
"Those two have to keep things dramatic, don't they?" Ron muttered under his breath.
Harry laughed slightly. "Come on; we need to keep up with them."
Soon the other three were struggling to keep up with Draco and Blaise, who were racing with determination now to get to Little Hangleton. Harry noticed the change in both their expressions as they caught up, finding nothing but seriousness on Draco and Blaise's faces. They didn't even notice the other three flying next to them.
The odd energy racing through him had nearly taken over Draco, and he felt more...animalistic, almost. The only thing on his mind now was getting to Hermione and making sure she was safe. And he would do anything to make sure of this.
A/N: I won't be able to update for the next couple of days as I'm going to visit family, but come Monday I will be able to start updating again! In the meantime enjoy this chapter! <3
