Truth

~Rapunzel and Eugene~
Rapunzel closed her eyes and let out a huge sigh. She didn't even know why she was freaking out so bad. She tapped her fingers on her knees, knowing everything was okay. Everything was going great.

She felt fingers slip around her's. She opened her eyes and looked into his comforting ones. Why did he seem so fearless? "Everything's okay." He assured, giving her a gentle smile.

"I know, I know. I'm just a little anxious." She excused, fidgeting in her seat. Okay, she was extremely anxious. God, she just had to think happy thoughts. They were just overreacting, that's all. There was nothing wrong.

"Rap, you have no reason to be scared. They're going to come back in here and tell us that he's perfectly normal. He's okay." Eugene softly chuckled as he brushed her blonde strand out of her green eyes.

"But what if everything's not okay? What if he's not normal?" She softly questioned. He shrugged his shoulders, considering her question.

"Then we'll work it out." He replied. If something was wrong, he wasn't going to just give up. They were going to work through it and make everything as close to perfect as they could.

"But that's-"

Rapunzel was cut off as the doctor entered back into the room. Rapunzel and Eugene quickly stood up, shaking his hand. This was their first time meeting Dr. Robert. He was recommended by everyone. He's the best of the best.

"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Fitzherbert. Please sit." He encouraged as he sat down in his rolling chair, scooting towards the computer. He quickly typed as Rapunzel and Eugene glanced at each other.

"How is my baby?" Rapunzel suddenly asked. "Is he okay?" She stuttered, holding her hands close to her body. Her hands were beginning to tremble as the question hung in the air.

Dr. Robert looked at them, then took off his glasses, gently placing them on his desk. He eyed her as he set his elbows on his knees. "Mrs. Fitzherbert, do you have any relatives with any form of vision disability?" He asked.

She shook her head. "None that I know of. Why?"

Dr. Robert let out a sigh and ran his hands through what little hair he had left. He looked back at the terrified couple. Eugene gently placed his hand onto his wife's shoulder. "Your son, Zachary, has protanopia, or red-dichromacy."

"What does that mean?" Eugene quickly fired back, furrowing his eyebrows. He hoped this wasn't just some stupid name they gave some common disability. He could feel Rapunzel tense up, hearing the news.

"It means, Mr. Fitzherbert, that Zachary is color blind. He is missing his L-cones so he is a dichromate, meaning he will have a very difficult time distinguishing between blues and greens and he can't even see red. This is pretty rare, since only about 1.01% of males have this." Dr. Robert explained. The couple let out a small gasp, letting the news sink in.

"Is anyone color blind in your family?" He repeated.

"Eugene's grandmother is color blind. Would that have to do with any of this?" Rapunzel answered. They had done a little family research, figuring he had some type of vision disability, but they never imagined this.

"No. Mrs. Fitzherbert, it's impossible for Zachary to inherit this from his father. Males can not inherit the X chromosome from their father, which is what carries the color blind trait. The only possible way for this to transfer would be through his mother."

"How is that possible? Rapunzel isn't color blind! None of her family members are color blind." Eugene quickly protested. This just wasn't processing in his mind. All of this was just too much. He just wanted some air.

"Most people who are color blind don't like telling others. Your great, great, grandfather could've been color blind, but the traits didn't show up until now. Your mother could be a carrier and passed it down to you."

"So you're saying that this is all my fault? I'm the carrier of this horrible condition?" Rapunzel croaked. Oh god. This was all her fault. She gave her baby this awful disability.

"No. None of this is your fault. We can't blame our genes. We didn't get to choose them. Since it seems that you are a carrier, do you have any other children?" Dr. Robert questioned. He hated bearing bad news to others, but he was going to be honest.

"We have two others. One boy and one girl." Eugene quickly answered as Rapunzel softly sobbed beside him. Her shoulders were slightly shaking from her silent cries. She hid her eyes behind her hands, trying to pull herself together.

"Ages?"

"Bastian is our oldest and he's five. Rosabella is only about nine months." He replied as he tried to comfort his wife, but she seemed like she was in her own world.

Dr. Robert tapped his pen to his chin. He had to think of a way to tell them this. "Well, um, you'll need to keep an eye on Rosabella. Bastian is probably okay if you haven't noticed any signs."

"Why would we need to watch Rosie?" Rapunzel asked, glancing her head upwards to look at him. Her eyes were already bloodshot and she had tear stains staining her cheeks.

"Um, well, um. Uh, since you are a carrier, there is a fifty-fifty chance, for both genders, that your children will have this trait. As you can tell, Zachary has it and Bastian doesn't. Rosabella has the same possibility to carry this trait."

"What?" Rapunzel croaked.

"Rosabella has a chance of being colorblind." He repeated. Rapunzel's bottom lip began to tremble as the news got worse and worse. Not only was one of her children colorblind, but another could be too? This was all her fault.

Eugene let out a deep sigh as he ran his hands through his hair, messing it all up. Oh god. This was huge, horrible news. He was lost for words, unsure what to even think or do. "Um, I know this might be a lot to take in, but I figured that you might want to know what Zachary will go through." Dr. Robert softly spoke.

"Yeah, yeah. Anything so we can help him through this." Eugene quickly answered as he cleared his throat. Rapunzel softly nodded her head as she stared off into the distance. What kind of a mother was she?

"Zachary will have difficulties learning. In kindergarten, education is based through visual simulations, like bright colors and imagery. His self-esteem could be damaged since he'll highly depend on praise. He could get very frustrated, unable to comprehend why he isn't understanding what other children are. On top of this, he may receive teasings from other children and, in some cases, the teachers."

At this point, Rapunzel couldn't bear to hear anymore. She had to get away. She couldn't stand listening to what she caused her child to have. She stood up and began to walk off, tears beginning to drip off her chin.

Eugene glanced up, noticing her heading for the door. Quickly, he gripped her wrist. She twisted it, trying to get out of his grasp. She didn't want to hear anymore. "Mrs. Fitzherbert! Please don't go outside yet!" Dr. Robert exclaimed.

"Eugene, let me go." She hiccuped, pulling on her arm, ignoring Dr. Robert's pleas. She had to get out.

"Mrs. Fitzherbert! Please!" He shouted. She snapped her head around, looking at her son's doctor. "Don't leave yet. Zachary is outside and if he sees you like this he'll be terrified. He doesn't understand yet. You'll have to help him." He softly explained.

She panted, brushing her stands out of her eyes with her right hand. She looked around, meeting her husband's eyes. She couldn't bear to leave him alone. Peacefully, she took her seat again. "Thank you. One more thing, I want you to read these pamphlets. They'll help you understand how to help him. I'm also sending books in the mail at no cost. I'm alway here, too."

"Thank you, Dr. Robert." Eugene softly replied, taking a pamphlet from the doctor's hands. He opened it up, taking a quick glance at the bullet points. Education Troubles. Cooking Problems. Psychological Effects. Oh boy.

~Merida and Hiccup~
"Come on, Hiccup. It's me." Merida persisted. She had to get him to remember. He had to know who she was. She left the kids with Charlotte, even though Melissa protested all morning.

"Merida, you say that you're my wife, but I just don't remember. You come in here, trying everyday, but I can't remember," he exclaimed. "Why do you try anymore? I'm a lost cause."

"You are not a lost cause. You are my husband. You are the only one I love." She declared. Hiccup crunched his face and looked around. These words she was saying made him feel so awkward. She loved him and yet he couldn't return the feeling.

"I'm sorry, Merida." He softly apologized. She sighed and dropped her head. Nothing was working. She's showed him pictures after pictures. She brought the kids in once, but never again. They didn't like their father not knowing them.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Hicc." She sighed, moving towards the exit. He waved goodbye, but it didn't mean anything to her. He waved goodbye to everyone. He didn't mean it.

She shut the door and ran her hands through her hair. She closed her eyes and began walking toward the parking lot. She had to get home. Henry was becoming a pain for everyone. He could stand being away from her anymore.

She opened her eyes too late. She crashed into Rachel. Both of them held their heads, slightly groaning from the pain. "Sorry, Merida. I need to watch where I'm going." She mumbled.

"My fault. My fault." Merida quickly fumbled, saying what came to her mind first. Rachel quickly chuckled as she shook her head. She wasn't going to argue with the world's strongest woman.

"So Merida, have you gotten anything out of him?" She questioned. After the past week, she had gotten closely involved with this case. Merida was a close friend and Hiccup was her patient.

"Nothing, Rach. He doesn't remember anything." Merida admitted. She felt like she could say anything to her. Rachel just felt like another friend. Rachel almost felt like family.

"If only you could get him alone, right? All day, there always seems to be someone with you." Rachel chuckled as she fixed her name tag. Suddenly, an idea popped into the redhead.

"Rachel, that's it!"

"What?"

"You could sneak me in at night! No one else will be around and I could finally get him alone! All you have to do is leave the window open a little and I can do the rest!" Merida grinned. This was her chance. Now she get this all worked out!

"Merida, I can't do that. That's against the rules. If I do that I'll get fired." She whispered back.

"Please, Rach. For me! You're my only hope! If you help me, I won't tell anyone. I'll stick up for you so you can even keep your job, okay?" Merida compromised. "Please?" She begged.

"Fine. I'll leave it open just a bit." Rachel groaned. Merida cheered and quickly brought her into a hug. Maybe this would work.

~Elsa~
She had to see for herself. This news didn't make any sense. Why wouldn't Merida tell them before? Why didn't they know about this when it happened? She sprinted to the counter, slapping her hands on the granite. "Hiccup Haddock." She declared.

The nurse turned in her chair and glanced at her. She rolled towards Elsa, boredom clear in her brown eyes. She tossed her red hair over her shoulder, grabbing a clipboard. "Relation?"

"Friend. Close friend." Elsa quickly answered. The nurse scanned the sheet then glanced back up at Elsa.

"No one's allowed in without permission from the doctor or family." She deadpanned. Elsa groaned and tossed her blonde hair over her shoulder. Why couldn't Elsa see him? She was one of their best friends!

"I have permission from Merida. Please! Let me in!" She exclaimed, letting her emotions get the best of her. She had to see him.

"No one's allowed-"

"Let her in."

Elsa turned and spotted the redhead. Her curls were tightly pulled back in a ponytail and she was in her sweats. Merida stood in the hallways, neatly holding her hands. Elsa smiled and ran to her best friend. "Oh, Mer. I'm so glad to see you!"

Elsa quickly pulled her into a hug, wrapping all of her love around Merida. Elsa let go, staring into Merida's dull blue eyes. She tightly held onto her shoulders. "Merida, what is going on?"

Merida just softly sighed and turned around. Elsa cocked her eyebrow and followed Merida down the hallway. Slowly, the approached the room. This was the room that gave Merida nightmares. This was the room were her life was turned upside down. "He's in there." She softly explained.

Elsa furrowed her eyebrows and looked at her best friend. Merida just stared forward, almost like she was trying not to make eye contact with Elsa. Hesitantly, Elsa rose her hand and shakily opened the door.

She peeked her head inside, listening to his familiar voice. Carefully, she entered the room, acting like there was a sleeping baby in the room. Immediately, she spotted him, sitting in his bed, a book laid out in front of him and someone sitting beside him. "So this is me?"

"Yes. That's you and that's me."

Hiccup glanced up, seeing the blonde. "Hello." Hiccup softly smiled. By now, he was used to seeing random strangers entering the room. He didn't know any of them, though they all claimed to be his best friends.

"Hi Hiccup," Elsa waved. The figure beside him turned around. "Hi Jack." She softly added.

"Umm Hiccup. This is Elsa. You remember her, right?" Jack asked. Hiccup shook his head, not embarrassed of forgetting everyone anyone anymore.

"Nope. Sorry." He shrugged. Elsa softly smiled and nodded her head as she brushed her blonde strands out of her eyes. Now she could see why Merida didn't want to come in. She didn't like not being recognized by her own husband.

"Hiccup and I were just going through some old photos from the last five years. Want to join us?" Jack offered. He figured that this was would be too much for Elsa to handle. The idea of someone forgetting everything about you was just mind boggling.

"Umm. Actually I just dropped in to say hi. I should probably get going though. It was nice seeing you again, Hiccup." Elsa explained. She wanted to get out. This was uncomfortable. This was insane.

"Bye." Hiccup waved as Elsa quickly exited the room. He didn't know why she left so soon. Maybe it was something he said? Or maybe it was what he didn't say?

Elsa shut her eyes and took a deep breath. When she opened them, she spotted Merida, sitting alone on the bench outside. In her hands, she held a picture, a picture of their family. "I never would have dreamed this would happen."

Elsa softly sighed and frowned. "Merida, you can't-"

"I could have done something, ya know? Maybe if I would have begged him to stay home just a little while longer. Or maybe I could have shut off his alarm and he would have overslept." She continued, staring at the picture. Why didn't she do anything?

"Because of this accident, my husband doesn't remember me. He doesn't remember his children, his dog," she sobbed. She wiped her tears with her arm, her blue eyes never leaving the picture. "He doesn't even remember his parents."

Elsa bit her lips, not sure what to say. This was just going over her head. This was so much to handle. She took a seat beside Merida, both of them looking at the photo. "Why did you tell us?" She softly asked.

"Hmm?"

"Why didn't you tell us? This happened a week ago. Why did I just find out about this today?" Elsa repeated. Merida shrugged her shoulders, unsure what to do. Was she supposed to tell the truth, or keep everything inside?

"I don't know. I just didn't want to stress all of you guys out. Rap and Eugene were in New York. You and Jack were taking care of their kids. I just figured I should wait." Merida replied as she set down her photo.

Liar. Liar. Liar. This kept ringing inside Elsa's head. She knew Merida. She knew that wasn't why she didn't tell them. "I want the truth, Mer." She declared.

"That is the-"

"Now, Merida."

Merida huffed and stared down. She licked her lips, deciding whether to lie again or just come clean. "I didn't mean to keep you guys in the dark," Merida started. "I just... I don't know. I figured I could handle it by myself, ya know?"

Elsa nodded her head. Everything was making sense. Merida picked back up her photo, gently creasing his face. "I mean, I was superwoman. I had the world's best husband, the greatest kids. Everything was perfect."

"But then, I got the call and everything went to hell. I drove to the hospital and found out about everything. The worst thing was walking into that room, ready to hear him," She gently smiled. "only to find out that he doesn't even know your name. You go there everyday, trying to get him to remember," she slowly explained. She sniffed, wiping her nose. "He was supposed to remember by now. He was supposed to be better by now. But the more I hope, the more I pray, it's like he gets worse."

"The more I kept it inside, the more the 'what ifs' ate me. Finally, my senses came crawling back to me and told me that I needed some more supportive help. I called you and Jack. Eugene and Rapunzel were here today, but I don't think they were here for Hiccup. They seemed distracted the whole time."

"You went through all of this alone?" Elsa quietly gasped. Merida slowly shook her head.

"Not all alone. I had Tiana, Naveen, Lottie, they all helped me," she clarified. Elsa nodded, getting the picture. "But I can't rely on them forever, Els. They have lives too, ya know? I just don't know what to do anymore." She softly sighed.

~Anna and Kristoff~
"Kristen! Time for bed, baby!" Anna shouted up the stairs. The little girl tottered to stairs and slid down, coming to her mother. Anna picked her up as best she could. Her bulging stomach got in the way though.

"Kristoff, can you get her ready? I have a few more thing I need to do." Anna explained as she handed her child to him. He gracefully pulled her up from Anna and popped her on his hip.

"Sure. Brush teeth, put on princess pajamas, read bedtime story, and turn on night light." He repeated as Anna nodded her head. She didn't care if he followed the system tonight. She just wanted him to get on it.

"Good luck." She smiled as he headed back upstairs, Olaf trailing behind. Anna waited to hear the running water then quickly hurried to her laptop. She opened it up and swiftly typed in her password.

She had to get this done quick. If Kristoff found out what she was doing, he wouldn't be happy. She heard footsteps upstairs, but she hoped it wasn't anything important. "Um, Anna, I think her pajamas are in the wash. Can you grab them?" He called from upstairs.

"Yeah, yeah. Just a sec, babe!" She replied, intently staring at the screen. God, why was this computer so dang slow? She just had to look up a few things.

"Babe?" He chuckled back. "Haven't heard that nickname before."

She softly scoffed and rolled her eyes. She wasn't annoyed with Kristoff. She just wanted this computer to hurry up. She had to find out what had happened. Sure, she probably shouldn't be going around behind his back, but she had to know. "Mommy, hurry up!" Kristoff called.

"Mommy, hurry up!" Kristen repeated, giggling afterwards. Upstairs, they were having fun. Kristoff brushed her teeth and let her try to put clothes on Olaf. Let's just say that he didn't enjoy that too much.

Anna figured she better go soon before things got hectic upstairs. As quickly as she could, she pulled the warm pajamas out of the dryer and slung them over her shoulder. She waddled up the stairs, dreaming of the day she'd be able to walk normally again.

Finally she sent entered Kristen's room to see them sitting on the floor, playing with her dolls. Kristoff, of course, was the baby and Kristen was the mom. Anna silently stood in the doorway, watching them play. "No baby! Don't jump off the couch!"

"Whee!"

"Ahh! Now the baby broke her leg!" She cried. She looked up at Kristoff. "Make her cry, Daddy." She whispered.

"Oh, right," he whispered back. Then he pretended to cry as Kristen took care of the baby, saying what Anna says to her when she gets hurt. It was along the lines of, 'It's okay baby.' And 'You'll be fine.'

Kristen looked up and saw Anna. Immediately, a smile broke out on her face as she ran to her mother. She tightly hugged her, happy to see her mom. "Mommy!" She cheered as she hugged her legs.

"Hey baby. I brought your pajamas." Anna grinned, patting down her blonde hair. Kristen giggled like crazy as she jumped around the room. For how late it was, she had a lot of energy.

"Thanks," Kristoff smiled as he stood up and took them out of Anna's hands. Immediately, he could tell something was off. She wasn't acting like her normal self. He rested his hand to her forehead as he furrowed his eyebrows. "Are you feeling okay?"

"Just perfect." Anna replied, giving him a fake smile. He eyed her knowing something was off.

"You sure? You're acting strange." He added, cocking his head. Anna quickly nodded her head as she placed her hands behind her back. Great. Now he was suspicious.

"I'm alright. I promise." Anna giggled, brushing back her braids. For once, she actually sounded believable. She almost believed herself. When did she get so good at lying?

Kristoff hummed and walked back towards Kristen, who was knowing jumping on her bed. As he got distracted with their crazy daughter, Anna quickly went back downstairs. She was going to find out.

She sat down on the couch, placing the laptop on the coffee table. Quickly, she typed in Kristoff's old job, hoping maybe some article had been written about it recently. Thankfully, she was in luck.

She clicked on the first article she saw, which led her to an online newspaper. She scrolled through, trying to find anything that would fit the puzzle pieces. As soon as she read the opening headline, she gasped and covered her mouth. Slowly, she shook her head. Hans Isle, New Management of Andersen Construction, claims big changes are coming
