Devil for a Partner
*Merida and Hiccup*
The smell of spring filled the air as it traveled in through the open window. Merida smiled and sat at the table, drinking her hot cup of dark coffee. She liked it as black as night. She brushed her curls out of her face and listened to the birds chirping awake. The sun was just about to rise. Years ago, she would've told you that she wasn't a morning person. After having children, this was her one time to relax by herself. "Bye Hic." She waved as he husband rushed out the door.
"Bye Mer. See you later." Hiccup smiled as he kissed her head on his way out. His folders were everywhere, surprisingly not spilling papers this time. Merida chuckled as she watched her clumsy husband start his car. He peeled out of the driveway, headed to school.
"Here we go, Merida. Ready to start the day." She encouraged herself as she headed to the bathroom to take her shower. She stood under the cold water, loving the way it tingled against her pale skin. She stepped out of the shower and placed her ear against the baby monitor. Henry was still fast asleep, his snores ringing in her ears. She softly chuckled as she wrung the water out of her hair.
After getting ready, she stepped out of her bathroom and headed down the hall towards her little warrior's room. She quietly opened the door, trying to see if she was still asleep. The red curls were at the bottom of the bed and her feet were at the top. The little girl's mouth was wide open, telling Merida that she would be asleep for a long time. Merida smiled as she gently shut the door.
"Wow. For once they're passed out." Merida chuckled as she headed back into the kitchen. She pulled out her phone to see if she had any calls. Tiana. 10 missed calls. What was she doing calling Merida at 8 in the morning? Merida quickly dialed her back, hoping it wasn't something terrible.
"Merida! Thank goodness you called me back." Tiana greeted as Merida held the phone against her ear. She walked over to the couch and sat down, wondering what this could be about.
"What's wrong, Tia?" Merida asked. She held the phone close, hoping she wasn't being too loud around the kids.
"There's been an accident down by the freeway! It looks like Hiccup's car." Tiana fretted. Merida's eye went wide as she dropped the phone. She sprinted to the tv remote and turned it on.
"Come on!" Merida urged as the tv warmed up. Could this thing be any slower? And why did it have to do it now?
"Merida! Merida! Are you still there?" Tiana's voice rang out from the phone, bringing Merida back. She picked up the phone and put it on speaker.
"Ya, I'm still here," Merida replied. "What channel?" She questioned as she flipped through the tv stations, tying to find it.
"13." Tiana answered. Merida quickly punched in the numbers and the screen flipped to scene. Sure enough, there was a pile up on the freeway. Merida's blue eyes scanned the scene, trying to find his black car.
"I don't see it." Merida fretted.
"Bottom left." Tiana softly spoke. Merida looked down and there it was. It looked exactly like Hiccup's car. Only now, the windows were smashed, glass laying everywhere. Firetrucks were heard in the distance as a few cars were flaming up. The sirens got louder and louder as they passed by her window, headed towards the scene.
"Mum? What's going on?" Melissa asked as she rubbed her green eyes, trying to get the sleep out. Her hair was in tangles and she had dried drool running down her face.
"Nothing sweetie. Just go sit down and I'll get you some breakfast," Merida quickly spoke. Melissa nodded and walked to her spot with Merida quickly behind her. "Tia, I've got to go."
"I understand. I hope it's not Hiccup's car." Tiana wished. They hung up, both hoping they were mistaken, but something was gnawing at Merida's stomach, telling her it was his. Merida watched out the window, thinking of possible scenarios. What if it really was his car? What if he's dead? No, he has to be at the school right now. Hiccup's fine.
"Mum, you're spilling the milk." Melissa spoke as she watched the milk overfill the bowl. Merida was quickly brought back to reality as the milk splashed onto her feet and onto the floor.
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" She softly swore. Melissa watched her mother, confused by what was happening. Her mum never spilled milk before. Maybe she was just having a bad day. And where was her baby brother?
"Mum, where's Henry?" She questioned. Merida's eyes went wide. She placed the small cereal bowl in front of her daughter then sped down the hall to look at the little baby. For once, he wasn't crying. He was just staring at his mobile.
"Hey Hen." Merida greeted as she picked him up. He cuddled into her shirt, happy to be held again. Merida gently rubbed his back, hoping he wasn't by himself for too long. She slowly walked back into the kitchen, trying to calm herself down.
It's not Hiccup's. It's not Hiccup's. Merida thought to herself as she rocked with Henry in the living room, watching the scene on the tv. The phone rang through the house, making her jump. Melissa came running with the phone and handed it to her. "Hello?" Merida answered.
"Hi, Mrs. Haddock?"
"This is her." Merida mumbled. She stopped rocking and sat up, worry building up inside of her.
"I'm sorry to tell you this, but your husband has been in an accident. He's in critical condition." The woman replied. Merida dropped the phone on the ground with a clatter, staring off into space. Henry began crying as Melissa tried giving the phone back to her. She could hear the woman asking if she was still there. To summarize, it was like hell was breaking loss and Merida had no idea how to control it.
~Rapunzel and Eugene~
"Momma, where are you going?" Bastian asked as he followed his mother to Eugene's truck. Rapunzel placed the suitcase in the back seat. They still hasn't told the kids what was happening for the next week. She took a deep breath and bent down to his height.
"Me and Daddy are going on a trip." Rapunzel smiled, hoping he wouldn't freak out. He frowned, confused about what she meant.
"Where?" He questioned. Rapunzel ruffled his hair, trying to make it playfully. His thick, brown hair flew into his eyes.
"Just to New York." She explained. His frown almost reached the floor. Why were his parents leaving him behind? Before he could ask another question, Rapunzel quickly walked back to the house. She really wasn't in the mood to answer their multiple questions. She was just thankful that he was the only one awake at the moment.
"Guess who just woke up." Eugene greeted her with Zach trailing behind him. Great...he was going to be the one to cry when they left. He was still really clingy to his momma and didn't even like her out of sight.
"Good morning, Zachary." Rapunzel smiled. She picked him up and placed him at the table. It wasn't even 7:30 yet and he was awake, which was unusual. She poured him a small bowl of cereal and left him to eat.
"Momma, I'm hungry too." Bastian complained. Rapunzel made him a bowl too, hoping that would keep them entertained for at least fifteen minutes. They were slow eaters, especially when they liked what they were eating.
"Do you have everything?" Eugene asked he loaded the truck. He slammed the tailgate shut, emphasizing that he had everything he needed for the trip. This was going to be their first time away from the kids.
"I think so. Did you leave a note so they know how to call us?" Rapunzel questioned. Eugene shook his head and headed into the kitchen. He pulled out a sticky note and quickly left everyone's numbers.
The doorbell rang out in the house. Immediately, cries were heard echoing out of the baby monitor. Rapunzel and Eugene ran past each other, each going to different ends of the house. Eugene opened the door to see Elsa carrying three blue suitcases, full of clothes. "Hi." Elsa greeted.
"Glad you could make it. The kids are just waking up." Eugene smiled as he helped her in. She stood up and brushed her hair out of her face. The boys were looking at her wide eyed. Why was she here? Rapunzel came running out of the office/baby room carrying little Rosabella.
"Elsa!" Rapunzel cheered as she brought her into a hug. She was thankful that Elsa wasn't backing out. She knew she wouldn't, but at least she seemed enthusiastic about coming to their madhouse at 7:45 in the morning. "I'll give you instructions when our other babysitter shows up." Rapunzel explained.
"Other babysitter?" Elsa exclaimed. Who was she going to be working with? Eugene peeked out the window and smiled.
"He's here!" He cheered. Eugene walked out on the front porch, blocking the man from her field of vision.
"He?" Elsa questioned. Rapunzel nodded her head and handed the baby to Elsa. Elsa was taken back and held the baby out in arms reach. Rosie tilted her head to the side, confused about what was happening.
Eugene entered with Jack behind him to find Rapunzel mixing some formula together as Elsa held the baby away from her body. Rosabella looked at him and smiled. She had no idea what was happening, but at least she knew Jack and that was all that mattered. "Elsa?" Jack questioned as he walked into the kitchen.
"Jack." Elsa replied. What was going on? They started shoving questions down the couples throat, asking why they were together. Was this a setup? What the hell was going on?
"Just calm down." Eugene replied. Everything was starting to get chaotic. As if on cue, Rosabella decided to cry and the boys decided to shout, making the noise twice as loud.
"Calm down? Do you see who I'm working with?" Elsa exclaimed. She was starting to get upset. They knew Elsa and Jack weren't together anymore, yet they had the guts to have them watch the kids together.
"Look, we would love to answer that question, but unfortunately we have a plane to catch." Rapunzel butted in. She took the baby from Elsa and popped the bottle into her mouth, making her calm down. Eugene shushed the boys, making everything almost deadly silent.
"Look, you're the only two we could think of. Now, here's a list of everyone's phone number. I placed them by most important. So if you get really desperate, call the last number." Eugene explained as he handed Elsa the sticky note. It was numbered from one to ten. All the numbers she could ever need were on the pink note.
"If something goes wrong and you need help, my parents are in the tan house up the street. They have a small statue of a sun on their front lawn so you can't miss it," Rapunzel added. Jack and Elsa looked at each other, confused by all this information they were just being given. "And please take the children to church on Sunday morning. They're usually good for the next hour afterwards."
"Good? Good." Eugene summarized. Rapunzel gave the baby to Jack and smiled. They quickly ran around to each kid, giving them a kiss and hug goodbye. Everyone waved goodbye to the couple as they drove out of driveway. The kids ran to look out the window, now more confused than ever.
"So. What now?" Jack asked. Everyone looked up to him, wondering what to do.
"I have no idea. But this will be a long week." Elsa replied as she headed back to their bedroom, taking it for herself. The children looked back at Jack, waiting to hear what they were supposed to do.
"So, did you guys eat?" Jack nervously chuckled. They looked at each other and nodded their heads. Inside, they were planning the most devious plan ever. Now that momma and daddy were out of the picture, their house would be a free for all. They could do whatever they wanted.
"Ya, but they haven't given us any candy yet." Bastian replied. He put on his sweetest smile and rocked back on his heels. He hoped Jack would fall for it.
"Candy?" Jack questioned, raising one of his eyebrows. Zach nodded his head and ran up to Jack.
"They give us candy to wake us up." He lied, looking up to Jack with big green eyes. He hoped he looked cute enough.
"No, I don't think you should have any candy until later." Jack responded. Rosie sucked on her bottle in Jack's arms. She was content with being with him. She looked up at him, wondering what he would do next.
"Please!" Zach pleaded as he hugged onto Jack's leg. He gave Jack his biggest sad eyes. He added a small frown for effect. Basically, he looked like one of those sad children starving in Africa.
"Please Jack!" Bastian joined in. Oh great, now he was looking at two of the world's most adorable children and they were begging for candy. Jack stuttered over his words, unsure what to do.
Elsa walked back out to see the boys eating away at every kind of candy possible. "Hi Elsa!" They waved with chocolate all over their faces and hands. Jack shrugged his shoulders and blushed a crimson.
"Jack, what did you give them?" Elsa questioned. She walked over to him, ready to scold him. Rosie frowned, unsure what to think. Elsa didn't look happy. If anything, she thought she looked scary. She began to whimper, not wanting her to come any closer.
"I gave them candy." Jack answered.
"At 8 in the morning?" She exclaimed. "Oh my god! I'm working with a complete idiot." Elsa sighed as she rubbed her temples. She wasn't even here for an hour and the kids were already running the house.
"Els, they were giving me the puppy dog eyes! They basically looked like Puss in Boots times two!" Jack replied. Elsa scoffed and they began fighting. The children looked at each other, unsure what to think.
"Momma and daddy don't fight in front of us." Bastian called out. Jack and Elsa stopped and looked at the little boy. The children were staring at them wide eyes. They didn't know why Elsa and Jack were fighting. Weren't they friends?
"Sorry, Bastian. We were just have a disagreement. It won't happen again," Elsa replied. He rose his eyebrow, confused by her big words. He shrugged his shoulders and sat back down. At least they weren't fighting anymore. "Jack, go give the boys a bath." Elsa commanded as she rolled up her sleeves.
"That means you have to take the baby." Jack fired back. Elsa stopped and looked him. He was just trying to make her wash the boys, but that was not happening. She shook her head and began on cleaning the stove.
"Sorry Jack, but I'm going to be spending my time cleaning." Elsa smirked. She had him under her fingers. He knew she couldn't handle the baby so he would have to do it.
"Els, that's not fair." Jack complained.
"Usually momma places Rosie in her playpen." Bastian spoke up. He couldn't believe who he was working with. He could basically run the house by himself. These guys didn't know anything about babies and children. He hopped off his chair and held his arm out at Jack. Jack gently placed Rosie in his arm. With all his might, he carried his baby sister to her playpen in her room.
"Let me help." Jack smiled as he took the baby from Bastian and placed her in the pen. She smiled and crawled towards her toy, loving where she was. She could finally crawl free by herself. This was definitely going to be a long week.
~Anna and Kristoff~
"Elsa hasn't called us yet." Anna frowned, pacing around the room. Elsa said she would call when she got to Corona. It was almost noon and she hadn't heard a word from her older sister.
"Anna, you have to stop worrying. She's your older sister. I think she's okay." Kristoff chuckled as their little girl ran in between his legs. She was screaming some thing about cake and ice cream.
"I know she's okay, it's the children I'm worried about." Anna groaned as she took a seat at the kitchen counter. She didn't want something to those three little angels.
"That's what you're worried about?" Kristoff lightly scoffed as he picked up the little blonde. She continued to sing at the top of her lungs, but they just ignored it. This was something that she did everyday.
Anna nodded her head, making Kristoff softly chuckle. "I'm sure those kids are okay." He assured as he placed his daughter in her high chair. He continued to get her lunch ready as they talked about their situation.
"But how do you know? You know Elsa doesn't like taking care of Kristen by herself. She doesn't even want to watch her over night." Anna fired back. Anna knew Elsa too well. She would eventually freak out and the kids would be on their own, well until Elsa's saving grace comes.
"I'm sure everything is-" Kristoff began as the phone cut him off. Anna quickly ran to the wall, ripping it off the receiver.
"Anna speaking." She smiled, hoping it was her sister. Elsa called her everyday, so it had to be her.
"Anna, I don't have much time." Elsa began. Anna began to frown. That didn't sound good. She pushed the phone on speaker phone so Kristoff could hear too. If it was something important and dangerous, he had to know. Plus, Anna was prone to exaggeration so it would sound way worse coming from her.
"What's wrong, Els?" Anna asked. She hoped her sister was okay. The kids couldn't be that bad, could they?
"I'm hiding in the pantry from the other babysitter." Elsa started. She listened to the sound of feet patter past her. She held her breath, hoping they wouldn't look in the pantry closet. She had the lights off and hid in a corner.
"What? Other babysitter?" Anna questioned.
"Yeah. And trust me, you wouldn't like who it is." Elsa scoffed as the feet stopped in front of her. She held the phone close to her ear, hoping they couldn't hear Anna on the other side.
"Well who is it?" Anna asked. It couldn't be that bad, right? It was probably someone who knew nothing about children so they were useless. Or maybe it was Eugene's brother. He was hard to deal with according to Rap.
"It's- Hi Jack!" Elsa nervously smiled as the door burst open. She looked up and him. His arms were crossed and he didn't look impressed. In all honesty, he looked pissed. He snatched the phone from Elsa as she continued to blush. This was embarrassing
He placed his ear to the phone, listening to Anna shout about how rude it was for Rap and Eugene to call Jack to help out. Didn't they know they weren't married anymore? That was just evil. Elsa had decided to help and they gave her the devil as her partner.
A smirk began to play on Jack's lips. Soon, she would be lost for words. "Hi Anna." Jack greeted.
"Uhh. Hello Jack," Anna stumbled. She didn't know that he had the phone. She wondered if he heard everything she ranted about. "Can you give the phone back to Elsa, please?" She nervously chuckled.
"Sorry, but Elsa's a little busy right now. She's supposed to be helping me make the kids some lunch." He growled, looking at Elsa. She shrugged her shoulders and let out a little giggle. She was soo dead when he got off the phone.
"Oh. Well. Umm. Okay." Anna stuttered. She wasn't sure what to say. Jack didn't sound happy. She was worried about her sister, but Jack would never hurt her, right?
"We've got to go Fiestypants. Elsa will call you later." Jack spat. He was so upset with Elsa right now. He couldn't believe she hid in the closet just so she could tell her sister about having to work with him. All day, he had been taking care of the kids by himself.
"Bye Jackson." Anna grumbled back, pressing the end button. Now she was upset. He called her by Kristoff's nickname. He was the only one allowed to call her that. "Ooohh I hate him!" Anna shouted as she stomped back into the living room.
Kristoff rolled his eyes, wishing everyone could get along. Ever since Jack and Elsa split, Anna hated Jack. She couldn't stand to hear his name, let alone look at him. Kristoff didn't understand what happened between Jack and Elsa, but he wanted them back together. He thought Rap and Eugene were crafty for pulling something no one else would have the guts to do. Hopefully this would bring the couple back together.
