Chapter 68
The next day at school Callie, Jughead and Betty found Ethel in the student room reading a book called Ship It.
" Hi Ethel," Jughead greeted her.
" Does this look familiar to you?" Callie asked as Jughead held the wooden doll in front of her.
" Where did you get that?" Ethel demanded.
" Ben's hospital room," Jughead answered as he took a seat next to her on the couch.
" What were you doing there?" Callie asked.
" I don't have to tell you anything okay," Ethel stated. " You're not the police." She then stood up.
" Ethel, wait," Betty pleaded. " We're just trying to figure out what happened to Ben and Dilton and the missing Scout."
" Is this the Gargoyle King?" Callie asked Jughead held up the doll once more.
" How do you know about that?" Ethel asked.
" Dilton started to tell me, but he only got so far," Jughead explained.
" So is it?" Callie asked.
" No," Ethel denied. " No, it's opposite. I made that talisman to...To protect Ben."
" How do you even know Ben?" Betty asked.
" He's my boyfriend," Ethel answered, a pink color crept on her cheeks.
" I've never seen you two together," Betty recalled.
" We started dating this summer," Ethel informed.
" Sorry Ethel, I was a bit preoccupied with the Diner and Archie's case and everything else," Callie apologized.
" It's alright," Ethel breathed. " And we spent all our time in the bunker, so..."
" What bunker?" Jughead asked.
" Never mind," Ethel chuckled nervously.
" Ethel, just..." Betty began, she was running out of patience.
" What bunker?" Callie asked. " Please a scout is missing."
" Dilton's. In the woods," Ethel answered.
" Dilton Doiley has a secret bunker in the woods?" Jughead questioned.
" Sounds very extremer survivalist of him," Callie said, Betty nodded her head in agreement.
" It was our secret spot," Ethel added. "And Dilton's too."
" Can you at least just tell us where it is?" Betty pleaded.
" I mean, I can't. It's too hard to describe," Ethel admitted.
" Then can you show us where it is?" Jughead pleaded.
" Ethel, it's either us or Sheriff Minetta," Callie threatened.
" Okay, fine, but you have to keep it a secret," Ethel ordered.
" Sure," Jughead said.
" Of course," Betty answered.
" And we have to go at night, so nobody can see us," Ethel added. " Do you guys know where Fox Footbridge is?" She then left the room, and the two looked at Callie.
" Is Sweet Pea alright with you doing investigations at night?" Betty asked.
" We know he does not like you investigating in the first place," Jughead teased.
" What he doesn't know won't kill him," Callie stated.
" You are going to lie to him?" Betty gasped.
" Do you know what you are getting yourself into?" Jughead demanded.
" Yes," Callie answered. " So I will tell him that I am spending the night at Betty's house."
" So a half lie," Jughead sighed.
" Be careful," Betty wished.
" It's Sweet Pea," Callie laughed. " I can handle it."
" Hey babe," Sweet Pea greeted as he walked into the room with a cup of coffee.
" Hey," Callie greeted as she was handed the coffee, it was half full.
" What are you doing tonight?" Sweet Pea asked.
" Studying at Betty's house," Callie answered. " I'm spending the night."
" Oh," Sweet Pea breathed as his smile dropped.
" Next night I am all yours," Callie promised.
" Great," Sweet Pea smiled once more. He kissed her cheek and left the room.
" See easy," Callie smiled as she sipped her coffee. Jughead and Betty both looked at each other and shook his head. " If he finds out, I know he will be mad."
" You willing to make him mad?" Betty questioned.
" I like when he gets mad," Callie stated. " His nostrils tend to flare."

When they arrived at Betty's house after school, they saw all their parents at her house. Alice, Fp, and Fred.
" What is wrong with the three of you?" Fred demanded.
" Dad," Jughead breathed.
" What's going on?" Betty asked
" Sheriff Minetta called," Fp began. " He said---"
" Called all three of us," Alice added.
" He said he caught the three of you snooping around Ben Button's room at the hospital," Fp prompted.
" Look, Dad, something weird is going on here," Jughead began to explain.
" No one wants to talk about it," Callie added.
" But Dilton came to me for help," Jughead recalled. " You were there. I feel like I owe him something."
" Boy, you don't owe him anything," Fp corrected. " This has nothing to do with you."
" And you Callie, I am not having another one of my kids taken away from me," Fred added.
" And you, Betty. This exactly what Dr. Patel was talking about. You keep this up, young lady, and you'll have another seizure," Alice scolded.
" Seizure?" Callie questioned as she looked at Betty.
" Did you have a seizure and not tell me about it?" Jughead questioned.
" She most certainly did," Alice confirmed. " And it's because you two keep dragging her into these murder investigations."
" You are unbelievable, Mom," Betty growled as she walked up to Alice.
" Betty," Callie began as she and Jughead went after her.
" Ah..." Alice protested as she put her arms in front of the two. " Fp, Fred, can you please?"
" Boy, don't even think about it," Fp ordered.
" We are going home Callie," Fred ordered.
" Everyone needs to cool off," Fp agreed as he and Fred lead their kids out of the house.
" Why are you two always investigating a murder of some sort?" Fred demanded as they left the house.
" Do you both want to end up in juvie with Archie?" Fp answered.
" No," they both answered.
" But Dilton's death is different than the past murders," Callie protested. " There were these symbols carved on Ben and Dilton's back." The two dad's looked at each other.
" You have had a long day, you should go get some rest," Fred suggested.
" Jug, you have homework," Fp reminded him. Fred and Callie then went into their home, the one next to the Coopers.
" Dad," Callie breathed as they walked in.
" Why did you change subjects?" Callie questioned.
" Callie, please go to your room," Fred ordered.
" But dad," Callie protested.
" Your brother is in his room for a murder he did not commit, and if there is enough digging you will end up in juvie for a crime you did commit," Fred warned. " Don't you think I did not forget what you did to that woman? Cutting off her tattoo?"
" Dad, something this happening, it's bigger than the Blackhood and what happened to Jason," Callie explained. " I'm scared."
" Just don't play the game," Fred suggested, then his eye went wide with what he said. " Go to your room."
" Game?" Callie questioned to herself as she walked up the stairs. Callie walked past Archie's room and saw Vegas on his bed. " Vegas." She went over and sat on his bed. He put his head on her lap. " I miss him too." She then got a text from Veronica.
V - Going to see Archie with Reggie? Want to come?
Callie - Of course
About a half hour later Callie was sitting in the detention center with Veronica and Reggie.
" You really didn't have to get me anything, Ronnie," Archie smiled.
" Nonsense," Veronica denied.
" Reggie helped us pick them out," Callie added. " Go on, open it.
Archie smiled at Reggie and his sister, then opened the box. He saw a pair of shoes similar to his old pair, but with Riverdale school colors.
" To replace your other pair," Veronica smiled. " They'll be perfect for your triumphant strut out here." Archie then looked around at the other prisoners nervously. " When the Innocence Project gets your conviction overturned."
" They're great, Ronnie, thanks," Archie said.
" Sucks, you could have worn those fresh kicks to the pep rally," Reggie stated.
" Yeah," Archie breathed. " How are the Dogs doin', Reg?"
" Coach Clayton's running our asses off," Reggie informed. " The varsity squad's gonna be tough to beat this year, especially with Moose anchoring the O-Line. The dude is a straight beast. But we're missing our star running back. We need you back on the field, bro." Archie then formed a face, an idea was popping in his head.

Later that night Callie was in Archie's room, she made it seem that she was already asleep in her own room. She was waiting for the signal from Betty. She saw the lamp from Betty's room turn on and off. She then got up and snuck out of the window. Minutes later she was in Fox Forest, with Betty and Jughead. They held a flashlight as they walked through the forest to meet with Ethel.
" So what happened, exactly?" Callie asked.
" One minute, I was fine, the next minute I was hallucinating some truly insane stuff, like out of a horror movie," Betty answered. " And then I woke up in the emergency room embarrassed, to be honest, and that's why I didn't say anything because it's nothing. Dr. Patel said it was just stress"
" Great," Jughead breathed. " And I asked you to investigate a double suicide-slash-murder?"
" Weirdly, being in the woods with you two investigating some crazy is the least stressful, most normal thing I can think of," Betty admitted. " Kind of reminds me of like when me and Jug first started dating, remember?" They then heard a branch snap.
" That's probably Ethel, right?" Callie asked. They then saw a creature turn around, looked like the thing she saw Ben and Dilton in front of. Except is mobile and it seemed alive.
" Cal, Jug, do you see that?" Betty questioned. Callie shined her flashlight up, there was blood on the beak of the creature.
" Yeah," Callie and Jughead confirmed.
" Okay. Run," Betty ordered. They then back up, turned around and ran away. Callie glanced back to see the creature running after them, very slowly, and its head tilt. She then looked back forward and booked it. They ran till they got Pop's, they then got a booth. Jughead pulled out a drawing of the creature on a piece of grid paper.
" Is that the thing we just saw?" Callie questioned.
" If I had to hazard a guess, yeah," Jughead confirmed. " Behold the Gargoyle King."
" Luckily for us, doesn't run very fast," Callie pointed out.
" No, but really, it was too tall to be Ethe, I think," Betty said. " Unless she was on stilts, which is a possibility because she's not answering her phone. Is there anything on Dilton's map?"
" You mean, what we should've checked in the first place?" Jughead questioned. He then flipped the paper to look at the map. " Uh, yeah. Right here. There is where me and Cal found Ben and Dilton. And this is the footbridge where Ethel wanted us to meet, but this..." He pointed a circle spot with a line in it. " What does that look like to you?"
" I mean, I was researching runic symbols earlier," Callie began. " That one didn't show up."
" What if it's not a symbol? What if that's the drawing for the hatch?" Jughead questioned.
" That leads to the underground bunker," Betty said.
" I mean, if this map is halfway accurate, I'd say that that's right around the deadfall in Fox Forest," Jughead suggested. " We can find this, Betty, Cal."

The next day Callie went back to the detention center with Veronica. they just finished listening to what Archie had to say about the football game.
" I think this football game is a fantastic idea," Callie complimented. " But are you sure it's safe?"
" It's fully sanctioned," Archie confirmed. " Everyone wants this. The Ghoulies, the Serpents. Everyone wants to feel...Free."
" Oh, I wish I could be there cheering you on to victory," Veronica wished.
" Me too," Archie agreed. " And if ever there were a group of guys who needed a pep rally..." Veronica and Callie then looked at each other and nodded.

They were now back at Riverdale High, they were talking to Cheryl.
" I've reconsidered your bid for student council president," Veronica announced.
" Why, pray tell?" Cheryl demanded.
" Because you were right," Veronica answered. " Protecting Archie's presidency doesn't really help him in any meaningful way."
" I'm glad you've come to your senses," Cheryl smiled.
" However, I know something that would help bolster his spirits," Callie suggested. " But I would need your help, and the Vixens."
" Anything for Strawberry," Cheryl confirmed with a smile.
" Nobody has called me that since like Reggie," Callie laughed.
