Chapter 51

Callie now sat in a booth at Pop's with her mom and Archie.

" Archie, I really hate to see you and your father fighting," their mom started.

" We're not, Mom," Archie assured her.

" And look, you and Veronica, it's your first real relationship...I just wanna make sure that you're not being...led astray," their mom stated.

" By Ronnie?" their mom asked.

" To align yourself with her family against your better judgment," Callie spoke.

" It's not like that. Okay? Veronica is an amazing person," Archie defended his girlfriend and her family.

" I'm sure she is," their mom smiled. " But I guess I'm just saying, so's your dad." She then looked at Callie. " I also heard that you have been mingling with the Serpents?"

"Is that a bad thing?" Callie asked.

"I didn't think you were interested in bad boys," their mom stated.

" Mom," Callie said. " Me and all of the serpents are pretty good friends."

" Is there one, in particular, you like more than the others?" their mom asked.

" Possibly," Callie blushed.

Callie was now standing outside Southside High she was chaining young serpents to the building of the Southside high school. She was finishing up with Sweet Pea, strapping the chains over his chest.

" Are you sure you guys won't get too cold?" Callie asked as she handed each of the serpents some blankets.

" We will be fine," Jughead assured. " Just wait here with us." Hours later her brother showed up on his bike.

" Well, well, well. The cavalry's finally here," Jughead commented.

" Guess that means we've got Hiram's attention," Callie added.

" Are you nuts?" Archie demanded. " Chaining yourself to this place? They're gonna tear is down in two days, dude." Jughead then scoffed.

" Not unless Hiram wants the blood of eight young Serpents on his hands," Callie pointed out.

" We're not going anywhere," Jughead added. " Go and tell your boss we said that."

The next day Callie came back to the site with Betty. She sat down and talked to Jughead as Callie handed them each coffee.

" Do you guys need fresh, not soaked blankets?" Callie asked.

"We are fine," Sweet Pea assured. " You are doing enough, thanks for the coffee."

" Don't want any of you to get frostbite," Callie stated.

" Get to school shortstop," Sweet Pea advised.

" Come on Callie," Betty said as she stood up.

" If you guys need anything, have FP text me if your phones are dead or close to dead," Callie advised.

" Get to school shortstop," Sweet Pea repeated himself.

Later at school, Callie sat in the room next to Reggie and Valerie as Josie talked about Veronica.

" We live in uncertain times, but there's one thing I'm very certain of," Josie announced. " My girl Ronnie here, along with her running mate, Betty Cooper, has my vote to be Riverdale High's next President and Vice President. And of course, we remind everyone, especially the women, to vote and be heard this election." Everyone clapped and cheered. Josie started singing with Veronica. As they sang the song, Ethel walked around passing out fliers about Veronica. All saying mean nasty words about her.

" She's going to look bad in the running," Reggie whispered to Callie.

" She knew about the high school being turned in a prison," Callie stated. " She lied about it."

" Okay, what's going on? " Veronica asked. Ethel then handed a flier to Veronica. " Where did you get all this information?"

"Does it matter?" Ethel asked. " It's the truth, isn't it?"

" I don't understand," Veronica stated. " I told you that we were making amends, that your dad would get a job offer."

"You mean, your half-hearted bribe? Ethel questioned. " Yeah. Too little, too late."

" B, wait!" Veronica called out, Callie looked behind her to see Betty storming out of the room. Callie then left and made her way back over to Southside.

" I thought I told you to go to school," Sweet Pea announced.

" You didn't say I had to go the whole time," Callie pointed out.

" Callie!" Sweet Pea scolded. She then handed each some hand warmers. " If you didn't come with these, I would be so mad at you for skipping school."

"You are skipping as well," Callie reminded him. " And I ain't mad." She lastly handed a hand warmer to Jughead.

" Why did you leave school?" Jughead asked.

" Well, Veronica and Betty are no longer running mates," Callie answered. " Veronica did know about this school being turned into a prison."

" What else lies has she told us?"Jughead asked angrily.

" I don't know," Callie answered. " But Ethel handed these out for everyone." Callie handed the sheet of paper to him.

*****

Later that night Callie sat at the dinner table with her family.

" I was hoping to see Jughead while I was in town," their mom said.

" He's still at Southside High, fighting for the school," Callie informed her.

" Chained up like lunatic," Archie added.

" Arch, you might not believe in what he's fighting for..." their dad began.

" I'm not sure he's fighting for anything, Dad," Archie stated. " I think he's mostly fighting against Mr. Lodge. Like a lot of people in this town who are afraid."

" Archie!" their mom said.

" Afraid? Afraid of what?" Callie asked.

" Afraid of having a vision, of seeing what has to be done and doing it," Archie explained.

" I hope that you're not referring to your father, Archie," their mom scolded. " This man who broke rocks when he was in high school, to support his family when his dad was sick. A man who saw what had to be done and did it. And built a business out of nothing. One that pays for this house and the food you eat every day. And for your information, your father had and has a vision for Riverdale. One that doesn't, thank God, end up with everyone working in a penal colony. Now, you don't have to side with your dad, okay? You can side with Hiram Lodge, even though he's a crook, and has no intentions of letting your father out of that contract, by the way. You can do that. That is your right. But I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit here and listen to you disrespect him!" She then threw down her napkin and stormed away from the dinner table.

"  Good going jackass," Callie growled before going after their mom.

" Not now," her mom warned.

" Are you alright?" Callie asked.

" Your brother is disrespecting your father," her mom pointed out.

" I know," Callie breathed. " I was there...I support dad."

" You do?" her mom asked.

" Yeah, I don't want this town being turned into some graveyard," Callie answered. " I always dreamed of becoming an attorney like you and raising my family here. That can't happen if the Lodges get there way."

" You think this town is worth saving too?" Her mom asked grabbing her daughter's hands.

" The Northside and the Southside," Callie answered.

" Why the Southside?" her mom asked.

" Without the Southside, would Riverdale, really be Riverdale?" Callie questioned. " What's Riverdale without their gangs such as the Serpents and the Ghoulies."

" How did you become so smart?" Her mom asked touching her face. " From you and dad," Callie answered. " I stayed up and helped you with court cases, and I learned how to do the bills and taxes with dad."

" Oh, Callie," her mom gushed. " Go help save that school."

" I will try my best, mom," Callie promised. She hugged her mom before leaving and going to Southside High.

" Here for the night?" Fangs asked.

" If this is important to you," Callie began as she handed them more blankets and hand warmers. " Then it is important to me."

" You came just in time," Jughead stated. " They just got back from warming up with some coffee, after getting claimed by frostbite."

" Guys," Callie groaned.

" We are fine," Sweet Pea assured her. " The frostbite isn't serious. Are you really going to stay here all night?"

"Yeah," Callie answered. " I think I need to be chained"

" You really are something," Sweet Pea smiled. They then chained her to the wall, and Callie was currently sitting on the wall with Jughead.

" My mom says hello," Callie informed him.

" You can tell her that I said hello," Jughead said. " What does she think of this?"

" She doesn't agree with the Lodges, she thinks what you guys are doing, is a good thing," Callie answered. " She was the one that allowed me to come out tonight."

" All the Andrews support it, but one," Jughead commented.

" Archie has changed," Callie admitted. " Ever since what happened at Pop's, he has morphed into this new person."

" He's been morphing since Grundy," Jughead suggested.

" You are not wrong," Callie laughed.

" What do you think is going to happen if this town gets worse?" Jughead asked.

" I'll be taken to Chicago with my mom," Callie answered.

" If that happens, we will visit you," Jughead informed.

" We?" Callie asked confused.

" You think that one over there will be okay with you leaving for a long time?" Jughead questioned her, he nodded in a direction. Callie turned her head to see Sweet Pea laughing, probably something at what Fangs said.

" Are you talking about Sweet Pea?" Callie asked as she looked back at Jughead. " I'm pretty sure he would do everything in his power to make sure I don't leave Riverdale."

" You're not wrong," Jughead laughed.

" Jug! Cal!" Fangs shouted. " Come by us, I heard we can stay warmer longer if we huddle." Callie and Jughead both got up and walked over to them, before sitting down. She sat on the wall between Sweet Pea and Jughead, they laid blankets across everyone.

*******

The next morning, a whole bunch of people was there, including Sheriff Keller. Pop Tate was pouring people hot chocolate.

" Save our school!" the people shouted repeatedly. As they were chanting the crowd broke apart by the wrestling team. They held clippers and was being led by Archie. He walked all the way up to the front, Jughead stepped forward, and FP walked up to Archie.

" Cops may let you by, Red, but you come in here acting like a big man and I will knock you down," FP threatened.

" Dad, don't!" Jughead pleaded as he pulled his dad away from Archie. " They'll throw you in jail. Don't give him an excuse. Go stand by the other red." FP stepped back by Callie and Sweet Pea.

" I'm sorry, Jughead," Archie apologized.

" Me too," Jughead apologized as he shook his head. " I'm not gonna fight you, Archie. Look around." Everyone looked at the people in the freezing cold, watching them, recording them. " It may have taken a couple of days, but now people know what Hiram's doing, what's happening here. This fight is not gonna go away. We're not gonna go away. So go on, cut us down. I want them to see you do it." Jughead held up his chained arms. Archie then cut the chains loose. Everyone booed them. Archie and the other wrestlers then cut everyone else loose. They then walked away, Jughead stopped, turned to glare at Archie.

" Come on Jug," Callie insisted. "Let's go get warm."

*******

Callie now sat at a booth in Pop's with Sweet Pea.

" Do you think we made a difference?" Sweet Pea asked

"People are really thick if it didn't," Callie answered. " Are you warmer?"

" I am warmer," Sweet Pea answered. " Thank you for standing with us."

" You guys would have done the same for me," Callie said. " It's what friends do for each other." Sweet Pea grabbed her hand and rubbed it, the two smiled at each other.

" Hey Callie," Kevin greeted as him and Betty sat down. 4

" Hey Kev," Callie greeted.

" Have you two warmed up?" Betty asked.

" Yes," Sweet Pea answered.

" Okay....how far are you with the musical?" Kevin asked, looking at Callie.

" I just have the last six songs to do," Callie answered.

" Opening night in about two away," Kevin pointed out.

" I will work on it when I get home," Callie said.

" Can you get them done soon please," Kevin asked.

" She is going to go to sleep first," Sweet Pea said.

" You can't tell me what to do," Callie argued as she looked at him, removing her hand from hers.

" You have been up all night, you are going end up breaking your ankle," Sweet Pea argued.

" I will be fine," Callie assured him.

" Yeah, after a nap," Sweet Pea hissed.

" Or coffee," Callie argued.

******

Later Callie sat at the table with her parents when Archie walked in.

" What's going on? " Archie asked.

" Your pal Hiram Lodge called," their mom said.

" He's letting dad out of his contract," Callie added.

" Well, I never doubted your mom for a second," their dad stated. " I knew she'd do it."

" Wow. That's--" Archie began. " That's great."

" Yeah, and another thing, kids, your mother and I have been talking and-" their dad began.

" I'm gonna stick around for awhile, help your dad with some more unfinished business, " their mom continued. " That contract was the last thing holding him back."

" From what?" Callie asked.

" I'm gonna run for Mayor," their dad announced as he picked up his coffee cup. " Against the Lodges, come what may."
