Chapter 49

Later that night Callie was in her room working on her homework when she got a call from Jughead.

" Nothing new on the Lodges," Callie said as she answered the phone.

" Someone else does," Jughead. " Come outside, we are going to Riverdale's bus terminal and meeting someone there."

" I'm coming," Callie said as she got up. She then quietly left the house as quick as she could.

" Callie," her dad said as she opened the door.

" Hey dad," Callie greeted.

" You are looking at the candidate for the Mayor of Riverdale," her dad announced.

" If it is something you want, then I will support you," Callie smiled.

" Thanks, Sweetheart," her dad smiled. " Have you seen Archie?"

" Probably working out," Callie answered.

" Don't stay out too late," her dad advised. " I know you are about to go out."

" I won't, " Callie said, she kissed his cheek before leaving the house where Jughead waited for her.

" Have you ever used rode a motorcycle?" Jughead asked.

" Yeah," Callie answered. " Do you think me and Sweet Pea walk everywhere?" she then got on the bike. Jughead then drove them to the bus station.

"Ready?" Jughead asked as they walked into the building.

" Low profile," Callie advised. They walked around, people got up from the bench and they two immediately sat down.

" I haven't much time," the man said from the other side of the bench.

" Are you calling me deep throat?" Jughead asked.

" You've been calling everyone in town for information about Hiram Lodge but not me," the man stated. " That's why I called you, good thing you brought your friend too."

" No offense, but how does a bus driver have insider information on Hiram Lodge?" Jughead asked.

" I used to be someone else," the man answered. They all turned to look at each other, Callie recognized the man. " Someone who was privy to Hiram Lodge's personal affairs. Someone who suffered at his whims."

"What kind of personal affairs?" Callie asked.

" I coordinated transportation for Mr. Lodge, sometimes out to Shankshaw Prison," the man answered. " He also received mail from the warden there."

" Shanksaw?" Callie questioned.

"That's not where Hiram Lodge served time," Jughead mentioned.

" I'm afraid that's all I have for you," the man apologized.

" That's it?" Jughead asked.

" And one more thing. A question," the man started. " Miss Veronica, how's she faring through all this?"

" She's faring through it pretty well," Jughead answered.

" Thank you, Smithers," Callie said as they got up and left. Jughead took them to the diner where they talked about it with FP.

"So, Hiram Lodge's master plan has something to do with your old stomping grounds, Shankshaw," Jughead informed.

" We tried calling the warden a dozen times but he hasn't called us back," Callie added.

" That corrupt son of a bitch," FP commented.

" Do you have any contacts on the inside that might know something?" Callie asked.

" Yeah, War Baby," FP answered. " He knows everybody's business."

" Can we get in to see him?" Jughead asked.

" I'll cover your shift," Callie offered.

"Thank you," FP said. " There are extra uniforms in the back. Minutes later they left and Archie came in. He gave Callie an earpiece to put in her ear.

"What is this for?" Callie asked.

" I'm going to go talk to Mr. Lodge about his plans, I need you to listen in," Archie said.

" I thought you weren't in on doing this kind of stuff," Callie stated. "That you are loyal to the Lodges."

" I am," Archie confirmed. " But it will good to have another ear listening in, you've done it before for Betty."

"Cause a serial killer kept calling her," Callie reminded him.

" Please," Archie pleaded.

" Fine," Callie breathed giving in. " But I'm filling in for FP right now, so I won't be listening in on the conversation the whole time."

"Thank you," Archie said as he then walked out of Pops's. Callie put the earpiece in and hid it before going to go talk to a couple of customers. Minutes later she heard the conversation between Hiram and Archie started up.

" You're like Dracula," Archie stated. " He bought property all over London so he could move his vampire kingdom over from Transylvania. Except you're bringing organized crime to Riverdale. And you want my dad to be mayor so he can be your patsy, except...What if you and him don't see eye to eye on something?"

"What an imagination you have," Hiram complimented. " What do you have there?"

" This is my journal," Archie answered. " When Mrs. Lodge sent that fake FBI agent to test me, I started taking detail notes of everything I saw while I was apprenticing with you."

" Is that a threat?" Hiram asked.

" I'm looking out for my family," Archie responded.

" Archie," Hiram sighed. " I believe your father and I will make a great team. Moreover, in 18 months, Lodge Industries will be 100 percent legitimate and Riverdale will be virtually crime-free. The safest small town in America."

" How are you gonna do that?" Archie asked. " Or am I not inner circle enough to know?"

" Everything will become clear very soon," Hiram assured. " I'm just asking you to trust me."

" Forget about me," Archie insisted. " This my dad we're talking about, Mr. Lodge."

" We will all benefit from this, Archie. I promise," Mr. Lodge assured him.

" I'll hold you to that," Archie stated. " And in the meantime, I'll keep this very close."

The next morning Callie was at school, Jughead was showing her and Betty the article that he wrote. About turning Riverdale into some sort of a prison.

"Hiram is diabolically insane," Betty stated as she put down the newspaper.

" Agreed. We need to show Riverdale just how insane he is," Callie insisted.

" This is the best thing you've ever written, Jug," Betty complimented. " Principal Weatherbee needs to publish this right the hell now."

"Let's go," Jughead agreed. They got to the Principal's office and showed Weatherbee.

" This is quite a story Mr. Jones," Principal Weatherbee complimented.

" Thank you, Principal Weatherbee," Jughead responded.

" Unfortunately, it's not one that the Blue and Gold can print," Principal Weatherbee informed them.

" Why the heck not?" Betty asked.

" A malicious take-down of one our student's parents is not the appropriate subject for a school paper," Principal Weatherbee informed. During the conversation, Callie got some words in at the Pembrook from her family and the Lodges. " Now if you'll three excuse me." They got up and left. As they were walking down the hallway, Callie listened to the other conversation.

" You're serious? Southside High is gonna be turned into--" her dad began.

" A private, for-profit prison," Hiram finished.

" Yeah, built on the bones of a high school," Mr. Andrews pointed out. " What the hell have we been building in SoDale?"

" What we've said all along. Housing," Hermione answered.

" For all the people who will work for the prison," Hiram added.

" And you expect me to support this as mayor?" Mr. Andrews asked.

" We're hoping you'd be open to it," Hiram mentioned. " Yes."

" Can't do it. I'm outta here," Mr. Andrews backed out.

" Look, Fred-" Hermione began.

" We've been in business for how long?" Mr. Andrews cut her off with a question. " And you didn't tell me. and the only reason you're telling me now is because it's ready to become public."

" I'll admit, it's not ideal," Hiram spoke up.

" Not ideal, Hiram?" Mr. Andrews questioned. " You wanna turn the town that I love, my home, my kids' home into a prison."

" Fred, please let me tell you why and how this is the right move, for us, for Riverdale," Hiram pleaded.

" You just save that for whoever it is that you find to run for mayor because we are leaving and we are leaving now," Mr. Andrews said. " Come on, Archie."

" Dad, I'm gonna stay," Archie protested.

" Excuse me?" their dad asked.

" I wanna stay. I wanna hear what Mr. Lodge has to say," Archie explained.

"Where's your sister?" Ms. Lodge asked.

" At school," Archie answered.

" Then I will see you both at home then," their dad said.

" Callie? Earth to Callie?" Betty asked as she waved her hands in front of her face.

" What?" Callie asked looking at her.

" You just spaced out for like three minutes," Jughead stated.

" Remember that mic I placed on your phone?" Callie asked.

" Yes," Betty answered.

" Well Jug put one on my phone, so I can listen to what the Lodges say, I have the other one under their kitchen table," Callie explained. " The Lodges told my dad and Archie everything, dad is not for it, but Archie wants to hear Mr. Lodge out."

" That's a good thing, he's backing out right?" Betty asked.

"Yes and no," Callie answered. " If the Lodges can't find someone soon, then they will use someone from their inner-circle."

*********

The next day Callie stood in the crowd with the people. It was raining outside, Sweet Pea stood next to her while holding the umbrella. Veronica and her mom stood on a stage.

" Thank you all for coming," Veronica announced. " Ladies and gentlemen, I give you your next mayor of Riverdale, my mother Hermione Lodge." She stepped to the side to her let her mother speak. Mrs. Cooper, Jughead, FP, and Callie all exchanged looks.

" Thank you, Veronica, and thank you all very much," Mrs. Lodge began. " Like many of you, I grew up in this town dreaming of a better tomorrow. For myself, for my family and for my friends. And now, for the future that you all so deserve. Riverdale is one of the most dynamic, resilient communities...Riverdale cannot succeed unless all of us succeed and that will require certain sacrifices." Most of the people clapped. " We will also need your support. We will need your trust. We will need your loyalty. This town has endured so much these past few years. After so much adversity, aren't we all ready for a taste of prosperity?" She then side hugged her daughter as some of the people clapped.

" What does this mean?" Sweet Pea asked looking down at Callie.

" It means we are all in trouble," Callie answered looking up at him.
