Chapter 43

Callie was heading downstairs when she saw Archie, he looked ready to go out.

"I got an internship with Mr. Lodge," Archie told her. " I told him I was thinking about business, and he wants the best from me if I am dating Veronica."

" Don't push yourself too hard," Callie advised.

"I won't," Archie assured her before leaving the house.

Later Callie was hanging out with Jughead at his trailer. FP was getting ready for work. They were working on a project when there was a knock at the door.

" Sheriff Keller," Jughead greeted as he opened the door. " What a surprise."

"Jughead, FP, Callie," Sheriff greeted as he walked in. " Sorry to bother you. It's..."

" We do not have General Picken's head," Jughead stated, cutting him off. " And we do not know who stole it.

" Same as the last four times you came by to ask us and our neighbors," FP added.

" You know, Sheriff these visits are starting to feel a lot like harassment. There's absolutely no evidence. Zero proof whatsoever pointing to any particular group of suspects."

" Well, you did write a rather scathing article about the General's legacy, which prompted the Southside Serpents to stop by at Pickens Day with an ax to grind," Sheriff Keller pointed out.

" He's actually writing a new article," Callie said.

" About how you seem to care more about catching a vandal than the Black Hood," Jughead added. In the words of the Black Hood, Callie paused on the project and her mind went back to the night. Something has been telling her that maybe that they did not get the right guy. " Can I get a quote?" FP started the to laugh. After Sheriff Keller left, Jughead and Callie made their way to school. They now sat in the student lounge as Veronica was telling them about her confirmation.

" I already invited Archie, but I want you guys to be there as well," Veronica insisted. " Usually these kind of events, baptisms, confirmations are family-only, but since its all about me and you guys are my chosen family, I pulled a few strings and reserved you a pew."

" What is the dress code?" Kevin asked.

" Catholic chic. So, dresses for girls, veils optional. And coats and ties for the boys," Veronica answered as she rubbed Archie's shoulders.

" Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper, please report to the Principal's office" Principal Weatherbee instructed over the PA.

After Vixen's practice was over, Callie was walking out of the school all by herself.

"Are you coming to the Whyte Wrym today?" Fangs asked as he walked up to her.

" No," Callie answered. " Jughead is coming over so we can finish our project."

" You always swing by afterward," Fangs suggested. " Sweet Pea would be delighted to see you, so would Toni.

" I will come by later this week," Callie assured him. " I gotta work on the project and later help my dad with bills."

" Don't work too hard," Fangs advised before walking away.

Later that night Callie was working on the bills with her dad when she got a call from Toni.

"Hello?" Callie asked answering the phone.

" Mayor McCoy is shutting down the trailer park," Toni said in a panic. " Due to rent that needs to be paid. We have 14 days to pack up and leave."

"Where are all of you supposed to go?" Callie asked.

" Some of us can go, but some of us can't afford to leave Riverdale," Toni explained. " I need you to talk to Mayor McCoy and try persuading her to not shut down the place."

"I need data," Callie informed.

" We can gather that for you," Toni assured her. " Just please-"

"I can do it," Callie assured her.

" Come down to the Whyte Wrym tomorrow, " Toni instructed. " FP is going to try calming us down about the eviction notices."

" I will be there," Callie assured her before hanging up the phone.

The next day Callie stood in the crowd at the Whyte Wrym as FP stood up on the stage. She stood next to Toni, as he started the speech.

" We all got the eviction notices, but I wear to you...No one is goin' anywhere," FP announced. " But the heat's been on us since Pickens Day and they're using that damn statue as an excuse to turn it up. But if we're gonna fix this, I gotta ask: Is anyone in this room responsible for cutting off Picken's head?"

" Why don't you ask your son what he has to say?" Tall Boy suggested.

" What is your problem with me, Tall Boy?" Jughead demanded.

" You wrote the article that started this mess," Tall Boy pointed out. " You and your posse fired the opening shot at Pickens Day,"

" It was a peaceful protest, Turncoat," Toni pointed out.

" That accomplished nothing," Tall Boy argued. " So what's to say that you and your boyfriend didn't go back that night with a ladder and hacksaw"

"Hey! We didn't do it," Jughead shouted as he got in Tall Boy's face. " Hell, Tall Boy, you're the tallest guy in this room. You wouldn't even need a ladder."

"Jughead...," FP began as he grabbed his son's shirt. " Tall Boy, the last thing we need right now is to turn on each other. Hey...We'll figure a way out of this." They all separated.

"I'm going to go talk to Mayor McCoy," Jughead said.

"Bring Callie with you," FP advised. " You need someone there with, someone that the Mayor trusts."

" Good luck," Sweet Pea wished them. About an hour later Callie now stood in the Mayor's office with Jughead.

" This witch-hunt has to end, Mayor," Callie pleaded. " The Serpents had nothing to do with that beheading."

" You know that and in the meantime, you're gonna tighten the screws, you'll send Sheriff Keller to sow seeds of unrest, threaten to take our homes away?" Jughead questioned. " Since when do you care about the statue of a murderer?"

"Since Governor Dooley called and read me the Riot Act," Mayor McCoy answered. " That statue cost him a lot of money. He's furious."

" And you're supposed to be an ally, Mayor McCoy," Jughead pointed out. " So why are you doing this? Unless it's..."

"Who's pulling your strings?" Callie asked.

" Is it Hiram Lodge?" Jughead asked.

"You're bright kids, Jughead and Callie," Mayor McCoy complimented. " I've always liked you both. So listen to what I'm telling you...Back down!" Jughead then left. " You too Callie."

"Mayor McCoy," Callie began. " If you close the trailer park, a lot of people don't really have anywhere to go. Please take this into consideration, before closing the trailer park  and forcing people onto the streets."

" I will take it into consideration," Mayor McCoy sighed before Callie left.

Later back Callie walked into the Whyte Wrym with Jughead, both holding fliers for the missing head. Callie stopped to tie her shoe.

" All right, order of the Ophidians," Jughead announced as they walked in.

" Jughead Jones," Penny's voice rang in her ears, Jughead's and Callie's eyes went wide. " Did you really think you'd see the last of me?"

" What's the snake charmer doing here?" Jughead asked. " Dad?"

" No, I brought her in, to help us," Tall Boy said.

" We don't need Penny's kind of help," Jughead argued.

" You don't get a say anymore," Tall Boy argued. " Since you broke Serpent law and hurt one of our own kind. Penny was about to tell your dad. Show him, Penny. Show'em all" Callie got up to see Penny pull up her sleeve, showing the place her tattoo used to be. She had flashbacks of the knife in her arm and the screams of Penny Peabody.

" That used to be my serpent tattoo until your sin sliced a chunk outta my arm and left me bleeding in a ditch in Greendale," Penny informed FP. He then put his hands in his face.

" She's lying," Callie said as she walked up to them.

"Callie please don't do this," Sweet Pea advised her, Callie looked at him, his eyes pleading her for her to stay quiet.

" What do you mean she's lying?" Tall Boy asked.

" I was the one to cut off her serpent tattoo, not Jughead," Callie explained.

"You still hurt one of your own kind," Penny reminded her.

" You did this?" FP asked her in surprise.

"Yes," Callie confirmed.

"Well, Callie here is not a serpent, so she didn't hurt one of her own kind," FP explained. " My son didn't hurt you, she did."

" But I'm still willing to help the Serpents," Penny insisted. " Tall Boy showed my those eviction notices. They're legit. Luckily, I can think of about 41 ways to stall the process. And I'm talking years"

" What's your price, Penny?" FP asked.

" Blood for blood. An eye for an eye. I want back in with the Serpents and I want her and your son kicked out," Penny ordered. " Oh, yeah, one last thing...I want their tattoo carved off and I want to do it myself. With a dirty knife."

" You can't kick me out if I'm not in," Callie reminded her. " And I don't have a tattoo."

"We will take that ring back," Tall Boy suggested.

"My ex-boyfriend stole it," Callie said. " If you want it back, you will have to steal it from him."  Callie and Jughead went to the trailer by FP's orders.

"I'm impressed by what you did Callie," FP admitted as he walked in. " But what you did was wrong."

"Well? What did they say? Are they kicking me out? Is Callie in trouble?" Jughead asked.

" Callie, I already informed your dad about what happened, there's vote if you are allowed back at the Whyte Wrym. And as for now, you can't come back to the Whyte Wrym for three days, I hereby am grounding you," FP explained. " Sweet Pea is outside the trailer to get you home, I need to talk to my son alone."

" Yes sir," Callie said before leaving and meeting Sweet Pea outside.

" The fact that you told the truth is a good thing," Sweet Pea stated as he waited for on the motorcycle. " That you were willing to keep Jughead from getting kicked out."

" I'm willing to take responsibility for what I did," Callie confirmed.

" You know this probably keep you from becoming a Serpent," Sweet Pea said as Callie got on the motorcycle.

" I know," Callie breathed. " But I was not about to let Penny rip Jughead apart through a lie."

" Do you have to go straight home?" Sweet Pea asked.

" Yeah," Callie confirmed. " FP grounded me, and he already called my dad."
