Chapter 38

Callie was helping her dad and Archie carry a tree into Pop's, they were dealing Christmas trees for a little bit of extra money.

" What do you say, Pop? " Archie asked.

" Is it okay?" Callie asked.

" The best tree yet," Pop complimented as they put the tree down. " Thanks, Archie, Thanks Callie, Thanks, Fred."

" Oh no," their dad smiled. " Thank you, Pop, for letting us set up shop right in front of your diner." Callie saw Jughead sitting in a booth all alone, Archie and Callie went and sat across from him.

" You guys gonna stay in town for break?" Jughead asked.

" Yeah. We were gonna visit my mom," Archie answered.

"But she booked a single's cruise so..." Callie trailed.

"How are you and Veronica?" Jughead asked.

" And that's my cue to leave," Callie said as she got up to go help her dad.

" Jughead, you want a Christmas tree, you and your dad? " Mr. Andrews asked.

" On the house," Callie added.

" It'll have to be a small one, Mr. A," Jughead answered. Then the two walked out to go look for a Christmas tree and help customers. When she got home she saw Betty walking up to her front porch.

"Betty," Callie called out.

" Hey Cal," Betty greeted as the two met in the middle.

" How are you?" Callie asked.

"Could be better," Betty admitted. " Do you have any new lead on the Black Hood."

" or Hoods," Callie suggested.

"What?" Betty asked.

"Come on Betty," Callie insisted. " How can he know about Polly being at the farm and you telling Archie at the same time. There is Black Hood, and one of them might be doing the others dirty work."

"That's insane to think," Betty stated. " I will think more about it." The two then made their way inside their homes, ones that stood next to each other. The next morning Callie sat the table with her dad, as they looked at his hospital bill.

" That is ridiculous," Callie stated.

"What is ridiculous?" Archie asked as he walked into the room.

" My hospital bill from Riverdale General," their dad answered.

"How much is it for?" Archie asked.

" Eighty-six thousand," their dad answered.

"What, dollars?" Archie asked in disbelief. " That can't be right, can it? Or doesn't your insurance--"

"They probably made a mistake," Callie interrupted her brother.

"I'll call them tomorrow," their dad said.

At school, Callie sat in the student lounge with a couple of others as they participated in Kevin's Secret Santa. Callie sat on the edge of Betty's chair. Her secret Santa was Cheryl, she gave a really old picture of the two in a picture. Cheryl laughed and made a comment about having to retake that picture. Reggie was Callie's secret Santa. It was a pop doll of Kim Possible, she looked like her hair was blowing in the wind.

"This is cute," Callie complimented with a smile.

" She reminds me of you," Reggie admitted. " You both have red hair, a cheerleader, sexy, and is extremely fierce." Callie gave him small smile.

"Veronica it's your turn," Kevin informed as he sat next to her.

"Hmm," Veronica sounded as she picked up an envelope. " Oh. A gift certificate for a couple's massage." She then glanced at Archie, then looked over at Josie. " Thanks, Josie."

" You can go with Betty, or with your mom," Josie suggested.

" Or I can go with your mom, if want," Reggie volunteered.

"Same old Reggie," Callie mumbled under her breath in annoyance.

" Oh, dear God," Cheryl groaned. " Can we please get this torture over with?"

"Betty, you're next and mercifully last," Kevin instructed.

" Well, I think I know who picked my name based on these wrapping skills," Betty giggled. She looked at Archie and giggled some more. " Archie..."

"My dad and I were cleaning out the garage and I found it," Archie explained.

" Swiss Family Robinson?" Veronica questioned.

" Yeah, it's this old read-a-long record we used to listen to when we were, like, five," Betty explained. " Oh my, God. I love it, Arch. Thank you."

"Hey, Merry Christmas," Moose greeted as she walked in with Midge.

" Moose," Reggie shouted as he jumped over the table to go hug him.

" Hi," everyone greeted. Everyone got up and went to hug the two.

Callie walked out of the student lounge with a smile. It dropped when she saw the janitor, and it wasn't Mr. Svenson. She walked over to the guy, passing Archie and Betty.

"Excuse me. Who are you?" Callie asked.

"You mean, my name?" the janitor asked.

" Uh, where's Mr. Svenson?" Betty asked.

" No idea. He's been out a few days," the guy answered. " They just called me in." He then walked past them and continued to clean the hallways.

" Arch, you and Veronica confronted Mr. Svenson about his connection to the Black Hood," Callie stated.

" And now he's not here," Archie stated.

"What if something happened to him?" Betty asked.

" Betty and Cal, we found out Mr. Svenson secret," Archie began. " What if we led the Black Hood right to him? What if he got him killed?"

"What if he is working for the Black Hood?" Callie asked.

"What?" Archie asked.

" Callie is on this crazy impression that there are two Black Hood's, the main one and the one that does the other's dirty work," Betty explained. Callie then left school early to go help out at the Whyte Wrym, they were putting gifts together for things like Toys for Totes. She was working on a box when FP pulled her to the side.

" Is everything alright Mr. Jones?" Callie asked.

" Did you know that Jughead was going to the snake charmer?" FP asked.

" The who?" Callie asked the FP handed her a file, she quickly flipped through it.

"Let's say this a month ago or so, and Jughead wants to try getting me sentenced less, is there loopholes?" FP asked.

" No," Callie answered. " But if you were forgiven in front of the judge, that could possibly give you a lesser sentence, maybe even out of jail and with a patrol officer. Why are you asking me this?" Callie looked up at him. " This is what is happening now, isn't it?"

" You are pretty smart Callie," FP admitted. " Most teenagers would not have been able to tell me that."

" I helped my mom on a couple of cases when I was younger," Callie answered. " It has paid off."

" Next time a situation like this comes up, I'm gonna advise Jug to go to you for a favor," FP stated, then Callie went back to help. She was working when Jughead came in.

" What is all this?" Jughead asked.

" It's a Serpent tradition," Toni answered. " Every year, we give back to the Southside. Toys for Tots. Meals on Wheels, kids and old folks living alone."

" The Hells Angels do it," Fangs added.

" I'm always down for charitable works," Jughead admitted. " Hey, have you seen my dad?"

"Why aren't you in school? " FP asked as he came down the stairs.

" It's a half-day before break," Jughead answered.

" Well, in that case, you can hold down the fort here, Jug," FP stated, Callie, walked over to Sweet Pea and started to help him.

" Or I could come with you guys," Jughead suggested.

"Nice try. The answer's no," FP denied.

" We do need another set of hands, boss," Tall Boy admitted.

" There you go," Jughead said. " Let me pull my weight." His dad didn't answer. " Dad..." Tall Boy then walked away. " I don't know what the Snake Charmer has you doing..."

"Sweet Pea, you're with us," FP announced.

"See you later," Sweet Pea told Callie as he got up and walked out with the others. When Callie got home, she was stopped by Mrs. Cooper from going into her house.

"Come inside and make some cookies with me," Mrs. Cooper suggested. " Lets some have mother-daughter talk."

"I am not your daughter," Callie reminded her.

" Yes, but with your mom always gone-" Mrs. Cooper began.

"I just talked to her yesterday," Callie cut her off. " But I will help make cookies, only if I get to take some home." She then went into the Coopers and started to help with the cookies.

"You need to be more careful around those Serpents" Mrs. Cooper advised.

"Why? " Callie asked. " They are pretty cool."

" Cool, until you leave them or get exiled," Mrs. Cooper stated.

" They will never do that to me," Callie said as they put a batch in the oven.

"Just be careful when you run around with those hooligans," Mrs. Cooper advised. " I'm sure your mom would be saying the same thing."

"Did Archie put you up to this?" Callie asked as she iced some cookies. They then heard the door open.

"Mom? Dad?" they heard Betty call out.

"Hey," Callie greeted.

"Hey," Betty greeted the two as she walked into the kitchen. " How are you two?"

" Fine," Mrs. Cooper asked. " I just iced some gingerbread cookies, Polly's favorite, just in case there's a Christmas miracle and she comes home."

" She tried to grill me about hanging out with the Serpents, " Callie said. "And I get to take some home."

" Oh, by the way, there was a gift for you on the steps," Mrs. Cooper informed Betty. " Your Secret Santa. I took it up to your room."

"Secret Santa?" Betty asked Callie when Mrs. Cooper walked away, the two walked up to Betty's room. " So my mom grilled you about being around the serpents?"

"She thinks I do not get enough motherly advice since my mom is not physically around," Callie answered.

"I am so sorry for my mom," Betty apologized as they entered Betty's room.

"It's alright," Callie breathed as Betty walked over and picked up her gift from her Secret Santa. The two girls then sat on Betty's bed. The note was typed. Betty then opened it, both girls gasped as Betty flicked the box off her lap. On the ground laid the part of a cutoff, real, human finger. They called Archie and he immediately came over.

" Enclosed is a finger that belongs to the sinner Joseph Conway," Archie read.

" He's talking about Mr. Svenson," Betty informed.

"You have one final trespass to unearth. Find the truth, reveal it to the town, and you will perhaps save his life."

"So he kidnapped Mr. Svenson, and now he's mutilating," Callie said, as she tried to understand everything. Then Callie and Betty's phone started to ring, Callie denied the call as Betty answered it.

"Betty, please," a man panted on the phone.

" Mr. Svenson? Is that you?" Betty asked.

"It is, Betty, but his name is Joseph Conway," the Black Hood corrected. " He's lost a lot of blood. Though it's nothing compared to the blood on the hands of this town. Exhume the past. Find where the primal sin was committed and you'll find the sinner Conway maybe alive. And as always don't-"

" What, you maniac?" Archie asked as he took Betty's phone. " Don't tell Sheriff Keller?" The line then disconnected.

"What sin?" Betty asked. " What could Mr. Svenson possibly be guilty of?"

"Well, now we know he is no longer working for the Black Hood," Callie admitted. " You two were right, it was a crazy idea."

"Veronica and I talked to him," Archie informed. " Betty, his entire family was murdered by some crazy preacher."

" Well, maybe the people who adopted him know something that we don't" Betty pointed out.

" Wait, wait, Betty. Before he was adopted, Mr. Svenson lived as Joseph Conway," Archie reminded her. " At the Sisters of Quiet Mercy. Would they talk to us?"

"They better," Betty scoffed, the two Andrew kids then went home.

" Didn't he say that they had him point out killed his family?" Callie question.

"Yeah," Archie confirmed.

"Is it possible that he pointed out the wrong guy?" Callie asked.

" He said he watched the man leave his house," Archie answered. " There is no way that he pointed out the wrong man."
