Chapter 37

Callie now sat in the library with Sweet Pea, they shared earbuds as they listened to Callie's recordings of the Black Hood phone calls. They kept playing with the levels, undoing what voice was being messed with.

"Stop," Callie instructed. " I think this is the voice."

"How can you be so sure?" Sweetpea asked.

"I've heard it before," Callie admitted. " But I can't place where, but it seems extremely familiar."

"What are you going to do now?" Sweet Pea asked.

"Listen," Callie answered. " Listen to the daily voices I hear and see if one resembles this one the most.

"If you do, do not confront the person right away, get me and I will come with other serpents just in case he tries anything, funny," Sweet Pea said.

" I don't want to put you guys in danger," Callie protested.

" You won't," Sweet Pea assured her.

********

Callie was now in the newspaper room. Archie told them they printed all the pictures that Sweet Pea and her took.

"There was a third child, Joesph Conway, who survived the massacre," Veronica explained.

" They hid his identity, changed his name, so he could lead a normal life," Archie added.

"According to Sheriff Howard's notes, he was adopted by another family in Riverdale and presumably, enrolled at a local high school," Veronica informed.

" We got a picture of the kid," Archie said as showed the picture.

"Match that boy to one of the Riverdale High students, during the years he would've attended," Callie advised. " Maybe that way you will find out who his new name is now."

" Then he might be able to tell us how the Conway murders are the connected to the Black Hood," Betty added."

" Or he is the Black Hood," Jughead suggested. " Just go with me here. Let's say that our mystery kid did end up surviving the slaughter, maybe even saw it. That would have messed him up for life.

"Yeah, and somehow, for some reason, he could be blaming the town for what happened," Callie said.

" And now he is just punishing for it," Jughead agreed.

" So, basically, we just have to go through all these yearbooks, page by page, and see if we find a match," Veronica informed. " So, not quite a needle in a haystack. What?"

" Uh, we just have to get ready for a party that we're hosting," Betty answered.

" It's my dad's retirement party, so..." Jughead trailed.

" Oh," Archie and Veronica breathed.

" No, you guys should come," Callie insisted. Jughead began to stammer.

" Yeah, no, I'm renting a karaoke machine," Betty informed.

" It's not a big deal," Jughead assured them.

" You should come," Callie offered. " You guys should come if you want."

*******

Callie was now at the Whyte Wrym for the retirement party, she had just arrived with the Coopers. When they entered she saw Jughead smiling at Betty as if he was proud.

" Wow, Betty," Jughead complimented, Betty had her hair down. " Mrs. Cooper. Callie. You both look incredible."

"Tell me about it," Mrs. Cooper agreed. " Unfortunately, I couldn't convince this one to dress appropriately. Hog Eye, get me..." Mrs. Cooper walked over to the table as she snapped her fingers.

" Tequila, straight up," Hog Eye began.

"Hold the worm," the two said together. Callie made her way over to the bar and sat at stool to talk to Toni.

"Do you want a drink?" Toni asked.

"I'm good for now," Callie told her. " I'm probably Mrs. Cooper and Betty's designated driver for the night."

"Well so, you don't look lame," Toni began as she filled a cup with water. " Water with a leave in it, it makes you look like you have alcohol when you actually do not."

"Thanks," Callie smiled at her. Sweet Pea walked over to them, he picked up Callie's drink and took a sip. " Can I help you?"

"This is water," Swee Pea stated as he put the drink back down.

" Hydration tends to be a key to success," Callie said.

" You are so annoying shortstop," Sweet Pea rolled his eyes.

"So are you Treetopper," Callie mimicked.

"Come on, we got a couple of pool rounds to play out," Sweet Pea suggested.

" He is one of the top players here," Toni announced to Callie.  " You should give it a try."

" I'm not that good at it," Callie admitted.

" Then looks like this something I can teach you and not Keller," Sweet Pea pointed out.

" I will be back," Callie told Toni as she got up.

"Take your time," Toni laughed. Sweet Pea and Callie were going up against Fangs, it was a learning round for her. He put the stick between the main fingers, she was getting confused and frustrated. So he guided her a bit. On the other side of the room Archie was talking to Veronica about the Love word, he stopped when he saw Sweet Pea and Callie, they were physically getting a little too close to each other.

" What?" Veronica asked.

" That is what," Archie growled, he nodded towards the pool table, Veronica looked to where he nodded and saw Sweet Pea and Callie. " Those two have been spending a lot of time together lately."

" She already got her heart broken once," Archie explained. " I will not let her go through that again."

" You are being overprotective," Veronica argued.

" It's my job as her brother," Archie growled as he walked over to the pool table, on his way he bumped into Jughead.

" Where are you going?" Jughead asked.

" Callie," Archie answered, Jughead looked at the pool table.

" Are you seeing what I'm seeing?" Jughead asked. " Doesn't she know she has to get our permission first?"  The two boys walked over to the pool table and got in between Sweet Pea and Callie.

" How's pool going?" Jughead asked.

" Great," Callie answered. " Sweet Pea is a really good teacher." Sweet Pea looked over at Toni, who just laughed at him.

" What are you doing after this?" Jughead asked. " Are you hanging with Sweet Pea?"

" No, I'm spending the night at Betty's," Callie answered, looking at the two oddly. " Is everything alright?"

" Fine," the two boys responded at the same time. Soon Callie sat on the wall with Sweet Pea as she watched her brother and Veronica sing a duet to Mad World. As they sang, Callie noticed that Veronica was trying her best to not cry. A couple of seconds later Veronica ran off the stage in tears.

" Veronica," Archie said as he went after her. People booed at them, including Sweet Pea, Callie looked at him.

" You can't just leave in the middle of a song," Sweet Pea defended himself, then Betty walked on the stage and started to sing. As she started to sing, Betty began to strip off her clothes. Everyone looked at Jughead, then watched his girlfriend do the dance. "When will you do that?"

"Never," Callie answered.

" I'm beginning to get the feeling that you don't really want to join the Serpents," Sweet Pea stated.

" I'm not really ever in the mood to strip in front of loads of people and pole dance," Callie told him. " Maybe in college if I need the money." Sweet Pea covered his mouth to prevent himself from laughing. When the song ended, the entire place was silent, then FP walked up clapping, and everyone else joined in on the clapping.

" There he is!" a man announced. When FP got the stage, he whispered a few words to Betty, took his jacket off and put it on Betty. " Let's give her a round of applause!" FP suggested. The people cheered and clapped as Betty left to the stage and went to her mom. " And show her some of that Serpent hospitality we're known for." They cheered a bit more.

" Would you like some of that serpent hospitality?" Sweet Pea asked.

"I am already receiving it," Callie answered, she looked up to see him smiling as he clapped.

" You know what? I've been in and out of the Serpents since I was younger than my son," FP announced. " And it's been a...A wild ride. Good times, bad times, but through it all, the Serpents stuck by my side, while most other people turned their backs on me. My own family included.  Now, the letter of the law says that I can't be here in the Serpent den. That I can't associate with my friends. Me real family."

" Yeah!" a man shouted.

" My blood!" FP shouted the crowd started cheering.

"You're the man!" another man shouted.

" But I've been thinking about that," FP admitted. " And it'll be a cold day in hell before a snake lets a pig tell him what to do." The crowd cheers. Callie watched Mrs. Cooper leave.

"There goes my ride home," Callie murmured.

" I will walk you," Sweet Pea confirmed.

"No," Callie denied. " I will walk with Betty, I have a feeling she will need someone to talk to after this, some girl on girl talk."

" Northside wants me outta this gang?" FP continued. " Well, they better bring a coffin because FP Jones isn't retiring! I am not going gently into the night! I'm here to stay! So, bring the fire!" Everyone cheered and clapped in support.

"Yeah!" Sweet Pea shouted as he raised a hand into the air. After it ended, Callie went outside, she stood at Sweet Pea's motorcycle with him.

"I can give you a ride home,"  Sweet Pea stated.

"No," Callie denied, she looked over to see Jughead walking away from Betty. " She needs me."

"Just be careful..." Sweet Pea began.

" I'll call you, I know the drill" Callie assured him. " See ya Treetopper."

"Bye Shortstop," Sweet Pea said as Callie walked away.

" Are you alright?" Callie asked as she approached Betty.

" Me and Jug broke up again," Betty cried.

"Let's talk about it on the way home," Callie suggested.

"Okay," Betty breathed, the two then made their way home. As they made their way home, a car stopped next to them. They looked to see it was Archie, he looked pretty upset as well.

" Do you two hitchhikers need a ride?" Archie asked. Without a word, the two climbed into the truck.

"Are you going to be alright?" Callie asked Archie as they walk in the house.

" It hurts," Archie admitted. " But I will be fine. By the way, Mr. Svenson turned out to be Joseph Conway" He then walked upstairs, and Callie sat down on the last step, leaning against the railing. A lot of drama unfolded that night, and Callie learned a new piece of information. Thoughts stirred in her head, ones she was too afraid to say out loud.
