Chapter 118

The war with Stonies was finally over, not too soon after it ended, the next round of videotapes appeared.

Jughead and Callie were both walking home from grabbing Pops for both their households, they both put the food down, picking up the tape.

'You know the sun is in your eyes," Jughead sang.

"And hurricanes and rains," Callie sang.

"And black and cloud skies," Jughead sang. Archie appeared behind her after coming home from a run.

"You're running up and down that hill," Archie sang as he took the tape from Callie. "You turn it on and off at will."

***At veronica's***

"There's nothing here to thrill or bring you down," Veronica sang as she looked at the tape that appeared at her apartment door.

****At Thisthorn, the Ladies were gathered around the screen."

"And if you've got no other choice," Toni sang. "You know you can follow my voice."

"Through the dark turns and noise of this Wicked little town," Cheryl sang.

***At the Jones, they sat on the couch.

"The fates are vicious and they're cruel," Betty sang.

"You learn too late, you've used two wishes like a fool," Jellybean, Alice, and Fp sang.

***At the Pembrook

"The pious, hateful and devout," Veronica sang.

"You're turning tricks Til you're turned out," Hiram and Hermoine sang.

"The wind so cold, it burns, you're burning out, blowing out," Veronica sang.

***At Pops, a few customers, Pops, Reggie, Fangs, Kevin, Mr. Keller, and Sweet Pea stared at the screen.

"And then you're someone you are not," Kevin sang. "And Riverdale, it ain't the spot." Kevin went to look out the window, they all followed. "Remember Mrs. Lost."

"And when she turned around," they all joined in the singing.

***Back at the Cooper's

"And if you've got no other choice," Betty sang. "You know you can follow my voice."

"Through the dark turns and noise of this Wicked Little Town," Jughead sang as he wrapped his arms around her.

****
No one slept much after the third round of tapes, it was the mystery to be solved. But Jughead and Callie had both been told by Veronica to just focus on senior year. Callie was now sitting in the student lounge, she was doing her homework when Jughead walked up tapping her.

"What is it, Jones?" Callie asked looking up at him.

"I know these tapes are bothering you as much as they are bothering me," Jughead said.

"And Veronica told us to focus on the rest of senior year," Callie reminded him.

"And we can do that by watching those tapes as we do our school work," Jughead said. "I know you know how to multi-task."

"If Sweet Pea gets a whiff of this he's going to kill," Callie said.

"He's not going to kill you," Jughead clicked his tongue. "You are his soft underbelly."

"His what?" Callie asked closing the book.

"Penny Peabody once told me that all snakes have a soft underbelly, and you're Sweet Pea's," Jughead teased. "Let's go Watson we got a new mystery to solve."

"Dilton's bunker?" Callie asked.

"Meet you there," Jughead smiled before walking away.

"Kev," Callie said as she saw him pass in the hallway. She got up, walking over to him.

"I'm about to go see Mr. Honey," Kevin began. "I got the list for the variety show."

"Do we all need to perform?" Callie asked.

"Yes," Kevin said. "There is no backing out, can you come with me to Honey?"

"I was just about to leave," Callie admitted. "Dentist appointment."

"So that means you won't get be here for the number I am presenting to," Kevin pointed out.

"No, but it will go amazing," Callie assured.

******

The dentist went well, with no cavities. It was now night, Callie was laying on her bed, doing homework, she heard someone knocking on the window. Callie looked over to see Pea coming in.

"Hey," Callie smiled. "How did Kev's number go?"

"Honey yanked him off the first note," Sweet Pea answered as he closed the door.

"He didn't approve?" Callie asked as Sweet Pea laid next to her. "That's no surprise."

"Fangs advised him to go rouge," Sweet Pea brought up. "Toni and I are totally joining in on it."

"Oh, this is going to be good," Callie smiled.

"What are you doing for the variety show?" Sweet Pea asked.

"I have no clue," Callie admitted. "Not a single thing has come to mind."

"Maybe you could get the vixens to do something with you," Sweet Pea suggested. Callie looked at him. "What?"

"That's not a bad idea," Callie admitted. "I'll talk to Cheryl, but she'll probably agree. What are you doing?"

"That is a surprise," Sweet Pea stated as he pulled her close, rolling on his back.

"Pea!" Callie laughed. "My homework is going to get all over!"

"First you have to get out of the arms of this serpent," Sweet Pea instructed as he held her tighter, Callie laughed. Sweet pea left a couple of hours later, the minute he left, Jughead appeared at her window.

"Jug," Callie breathed.

"Let's mystery crack-in," Jughead smiled. Callie shook her head before heading over to the bunker with her.

*****
The next day at school, Callie and Archie grabbed coffee for their friends, they walked into the student lounge to find Betty, Veronica, and Jughead.

"Ooh, they come bearing gifts," Veronica noted.

"And some news from me," Archie said. "I know this seems a little last minute, but, uh...I signed us for the variety show. To perform as a band."

"That explains why you were extra nice to me this morning," Callie said as her head snapped in his direction. "You little weasel."

"Well, obviously, I'm completely in," Veronica agreed.

"You know I support you kids in your rock-in-roll, but I really have to finish these essays, or my girlfriend over there is gonna lock me in the stocks," Jughead gave his stance.

"It's true, Jug has a lot of work to do," Betty confirmed. "But I think,  you can take a little time out, for this." Jughead glanced at Callie, she nodded for him to agree. "I mean, look, it's senior year, we promised we were gonna start taking advantage of that."

"Agreed," Veronica said.

"Does this band have a name?" Callie asked. "Brother?"

"Mmm," Veronica breathed as they all looked at him.

"Uh, it's The Archies," Archie answered awkwardly.

"What, was the Me-Me-Me's taken?" Jughead asked.

"We can change the name," Archie assured.

"No, The Archies," Veronica stated. "I like it."

"Cal, where's Sweet Pea?" Archie asked.

"What's up Riverdale?" Kevin said over the school speaker. "Are you trying to tear me down?"

"I think you are about to find out," Callie stated as they all exchanged looks.

"That's, wait. That's not..." Betty began.

"Well, sorry, I'm the new Berlin Wall, baby," Kevin continued. "Now, get your asses to the music room." They looked at each other, before heading over to the music room. Once there, they say Fangs, Toni, and Sweet Pea up on stage, Callie was surprised to see Sweet Pea with his hair down, but his outfit was amazing, along with the others on stage.

"I was born on the other side," Kevin sang from down the hall. "Of a town ripped in two. I made it over the great divide. Now I'm coming for you." Kevin finally entered the music room, he was in a blonde work and a gorgeous outfit. Everyone cheered once he entered the room.

"Enemies and adversaries," Kevin, Toni, Fangs, and Sweet Pea sang. Toni, she was on the drums and rocking it. "They try to tear me down. You want me, baby, I dare you. Try and tear me down." Kevin did a hair flip, he got off the stage and kissed Archie.

Archie was laughing wildly when Kevin pulled back, everyone cheered more.

"There ain't much of a difference," Kevin sang. "Between a bridge and a wall. Without me right, in the middle, babe. Whoa, you would be nothing at all."

"Enemies and adversaries," the people on the stage sang together. " Kevin made his way over to Fangs as Honey pushed through the crowd. "They try to tear me down. You want me, baby I dare you. Try and tear me down. From East Berlin. To Junction City. Hello, Mr. Honet. Hello, Riverdale." They all cheered. "You wanna try and tear me down?"

"You're done, Mr. Keller, you're off the variety show," Mr. Honey growled angrily.  They just continued to cheer.

"Come on and tear" Kevin sang. "Come on and tear me down." Mr. Honey ripped the plug out of the socket, Kevin dropped the mic walking out of the room.

"I said you're done," Mr. Honey said to Kevin again. "You hear me? You're done!" They all left the room, Callie waited for Sweet Pea outside the music room.

"What did you think?" Sweet Pea asked as he put an arm around her, they started to walk down the hall.

"Amazing," Callie answered. "All of you were amazing."

"I'm pretty sure I just got banned from prom," Sweet Pea said. "It's a good thing my girlfriend wasn't going anyways."

*****
That night, Callie was in Betty's room, with Toni, Cheryl, Veronica, and Kevin.

"Okay, I'm gonna try it," Cheryl said taking a gummy bear. She threw a gummy bear, it landed in Bety's mouth.

"Whoa!" they all cheered.

"Ok, can we please order pizza from Little Cicero's?" Betty requested.

 "Ugh," Callie breathed.

"Guys, it is not a sleepover without greasy pizza, right Kev?" Betty pointed out. He's been silently staring out her window.

"Kev?" Callie asked.

"Sorry, it's just..."Kevin apologized as he looked at them. "Working on the variety show made me feel like, I was reconnecting with the old, pre-farm Kevin. Mr. Honey didn't take that away, he made me feel like I was nothing. Like I didn't matter." He sighed looking out the window.

"You know something that makes me feel better?" Betty asked. She began to sing. "On nights. Like this." She went over to her dresser. "When the world's a bit amiss." She then went over, giving Kevin a hug. "And the lights go down. " She went over to her stereo. "Across the trailer park. I put on some makeup. Turn on the tape deck. And put the wig back on my head." She put a crown on her head."

"Oh," Kevin breathed.

"Suddenly I'm Miss Midwest Midnight check out queen," Betty sang as she put a scarf around her. They all giggled. "Until I head home. And I put myself to bed."  She went over, putting the scarf on Kevin.

"I heard what you're saying, Betty, but I'm not sure even a makeover montage will help," Kevin said as Betty pulled him to her vanity mirror.

"I look back on where I 'm from," Cheryl sang as she walked over. "Look at the woman I've become." She began to open the wig bag. "And the strangest thing's."

"Suddenly routine," Callie sang.

"I look up from my Vermouth on the rocks," Veronica sang. "The gift-wrapped wig still in the box." She pulled out the wig. "Of towering velveteen." Kevin smiled at the wig as they all walked over.

"I put on one some make-up," they all sang. They started to put the wig on Kevin's head and do his make up. "Some LaVern Baker. And pull the wig down from the shelf." They turned him to face the mirror.

"Suddenly I'm Miss Beehive 1963," Kevin sang. The girls all vocalized behind him. "Until I wake up. And I turn back to myself.

**They were now in Cheryl and Toni's room.

"Some girls, they have natural ease," Toni sang. "They wear it any way they please. With their French flip curls and perfumed magazines."

"Wear it up," Cheryl sang as she stood on the couch at the end of her bed.

"Let it down," Callie sang as took Cheryl's hand, she gave it a platonic kiss.

"This is the best way that I've found," Cheryl sang as the two girls turned to Kevin. They took him to the vanity mirror.

"To be the best you've ever seen," Callie sang as they sat him down.

"I put on some make-up," they all sang. "Turn on the eight-track." They started to do his make-up again. "I'm pulling the wig down from the shelf." They turned him around, he had a new wig, all of them had their hair styled.

"Suddenly I'm Miss Farrah Fawcett from Tv," Kevin sang. "Until I wake up and I turn back to myself.

**Now they were in Veronica's room having a pillow fight with different color wigs on and sparkly outfits***

"Shag, bi-level Bob Dorothy Hamill do," they all sang. "Sausage curl, chicken wings. It's all because of you.

****They were now at Callie's room in more sparkly outfits, they were doing angels in the feather***

"It's all because of you," they sang. "It's all because of you.

***Now back at Betty's room in their normal clothes, all of them laid on her bed laughing.

"Oh my--" Kevin laughed.

"Hey, Kev?" Betty asked. They all sat up.

"Yeah?" Kevin asked as he got up.

"What if for the variety show, we all performed songs from Hedwig," Betty suggested.

"Yeah," Callie agreed.

"As a sign of solidarity," Veronica added.

"And as President of the Student Body and Riverdale High's LGBTQIA Alliance, I promise you, I will sit down with Principal Humbug and make this right," Cheryl promised.

*****

Callie was now in the bunker with Jughead, they were watching more of the tapes that Charles let him look at.

"It's just the same, but different locations," Callie stated.

"Try looking closely at the windows, see if there's a reflection," Jughead suggested. "We can go from--"

"Jughead! Callie!" a voice shouted, it was Betty. They both jumped, turning off the screen. "Sweet Pea is waiting for you." Callie's eyes widen, she grabbed her stuff and quickly made her way out. Sweet Pea took her to his trailer, it was silent the entire time till he closed the door to his trailer.

"What exactly were you doing down with Jones?!" Sweet Pea demanded angrily.

"Those tapes are bothering the both of us," Callie answered. "So we decided to see if we could find something."

"Shortstop," Sweet Pea denied. "Veronica specially told you no more meddling, just focus on senior year."

"What about the tapes?" Callie asked.

" Leave it to the FBI, just take these last three months being a regular high school student, detective," Sweet Pea urged getting angrier as he walked up to her, getting close. "We have three months yet! I want as much time with you as I can get!"

"Pea! There is a tape of your trailer, numerous ones!" Callie exclaimed. "Not many people know where it is--" Callie paused, her eyes blinked. "Only a few people we know... know where this trailer is."

"Stop it, Callie," Sweet Pea growled as his nostrils began to flare. "You can't keep chasing after every mystery that rolls into this town, do you forget how many times you have ended up dead?"

"I have learned from the mistakes I've made in the past," Callie argued. "Have you?"

"Oh, I'm sorry," Sweet Pea grunted. "You seem to forgotten snakes shed their skin."

"Even if you shed your skin, you are still you," Callie answered. "How many more of these jobs are you going to go on?"

"Don't bring that into this," Sweet Pea grunted.

"How is my mystery-solving any different than your serpent's jobs?" Callie demanded as she put stubbed her finger into his chest. "Am I just supposed to sit back as you continue on with your normal?"

"I'm a serpent, I have to do my job!" Sweet Pea reminded her.

"And I'm your girlfriend!" Callie reminded him. "You say you want to spend time with me for the last three months! But you are always going off on your jobs!  How can you say you expect me to drop my interests when you won't even cut back?"

"Inside I'm hollowed out, outside's a paper shroud!" Sweet Pea sang. "And all the rest's illusion." He turned his back to her, walking away "That there's a will and soul. That we can wrest control. From chaos and confusion." He pushed the papers off his counter. " A collage, I'm all sewn up. A montage, I'm all sewn up."

"How do you think I feel?" Callie asked walking up to him as he turned around.

"A random pattern with a needle and thread," Callie sang. "The overlapping way diseases are spread." She turned around walking away from him. "To a tornado body with a hand grenade hand. And the legs are two lovers entwined." She picked up his serpent jacket, she turned around throwing it at him, he caught it with one hand.

"Oh, God, I'm all sewn up," Sweet Pea sang as he went to hang up his jacket. "A hardened razor-cut Scar-map across my body." He turned back towards her. "And you can trace the lines through misery's design that map across my body. A collage. I'm all sewn up! A montage, I'm all sewn up." He slammed his hand against the door.

"The automatists undoin'," Callie sang. "The whole world starts unscrewin' as time collapses and space warps, oh." She turned to the wall crossing her arms. "You see decay and ruin. I tell you, no, no, no, no." She looked back at him. "You make such an exquisite corpse.  Oh, yeah." They got into each other's faces.

"A collage, I'm all sewn up," they both sang, they walked away from each other, Sweet Pea sat on his bed as she went towards where she left her shoes. "A montage, I'm all sewn up. I'm all sewn up! I'm all sewn up!" Callie stood up, grabbing her coat, she left the trailer slamming the door shut.

 ****
At school, everyone came together and put on their best Hedwig outfit to stand with Kevin.  Mr. Honey stepped into the hallway.

"Consider this a peaceful protest, Mr. Honeym" Kevin stated. Reggie stomped his heel.

"Though I will weaponize these babies if I have to," Reggie warned.

"Clearly, you are all...very passionate about what you're feeling," Mr. Honey commented. "But hotheads lead to unpredictability and anger. Violence. So, I'm afraid...the most prudent action to take at this moment is to...cancel the variety show."

****

Night came, Sweet Pea and Callie had not talked to each other since their fight, Callie was now in her room, taking out her earrings for the night. She couldn't help but think back to the fight, to how much has changed since she met him.

"Last time I saw you we just split in two," Callie sang. "You were looking at me, I was looking at you. You had a way so familiar, I could not recognize 'cause you had blood on your face and I had blood in my eyes.

****Over in Sweet Pea's trailer, he was cleaning his brass knuckles, making them shine more.

"And the children of the moon. Look like a fork. Stuck on a spoon," Sweet Pea sang. "They were part sun, part earth, part daughter, part son." He put the brass knuckles down. "Oh, the origin of love."

 ******

It was way into the night, Callie stood at Sweet Pea's trailer, she raised her fist to knock, when the door opened. Sweet Pea stared down at her.

"I was just going to come to you," Sweet Pea said as he let her in.

"I'm sorry," the two said at the same time as the door closed. They looked at each other.

"I'm sorry for not telling you about looking into the tapes," Callie apologized. "I should have been honest with you from the start."

"No, I was being an ass about it," Sweet Pea said. "You don't need--it's not fair for me to get mad at you for these mysteries when I am constantly going on serpent missions....it's just...I can't get that image of you in the hospital bed lifeless...from when Kurt." Callie's eyes widened. "I started to think that I lost you. The more you keep going on these mysteries, the more of that possibility coming true...I don't I can handle it when the day it happens. I get nightmares about it, Callie." Callie stared at him as she sat on his bed.

"You never told me about the nightmares," Callie said softly.

"I didn't think they were worth mentioning," Sweet Pea admitted as he sat next to her. "I am this tough serpent, I wouldn't be so tough if I showed any sign of weakness. I thought if I seemed weak, you wouldn't want me anymore."

"Pea," Callie said as she turned his face to hers. "I want every part of you, the tough and the weak."

"Why do you hate it when I go on jobs so much?" Sweet Pea asked.

"The very same reason you hate when I solve mysteries," Callie answered. "I don't want to lose you." Sweet Pea put a hand on her face. "Jug, told me about this fact about snakes, that they have a soft underbelly, a weak spot. You are mine."

"You have been mine since the day I met you," Sweet Pea admitted.

"In the basement of the Whyte Wyrm?" Callie asked.

"No, when Fangs walked in handing me to you when you were unconscious," Sweet Pea corrected. The two gently kissed each other. "I love you."

"I love you, too," Callie responded.

*****
Since the variety at school was cancelled, it ended up getting hosted at the La Bonne Nuit, the crowd was applauding.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, for our final performance of the evening," Cheryl began from in front of the curtain. "I am beyond honored to introduce, for the first time ever, The Archies." Everyone applauded as the instruments were uncovered, The Archies went up to the stage. Jughead on drums, Kevin at the keyboard, Callie had a guitar just like Archie. Veronica, Betty, and Archie were on main vocals.

"Rain falls hard," Archie began. "Burns dry. A dream or a song. That hits you so hard. It's filling you up. And suddenly you're gone." Jughead started on the drums, speeding up the song.

"Breathe, feel, love," Veronica sang. "Give free. Know in your spot. "

"Like your blood knows the way," Jughead sang. "From your heart to your brain."

"Know that you're whole," Betty and Jughead sang.

"And you're shining like the brightest star, a transmission," Betty sang. "On the Midnight Radio."

 "Here's to Ronnie," Archie sang.

"And Archie," Veronica sang.

"And Betty," Jughead sang.

"And Jughead," Betty sang. "And Callie."

"And Choni," Callie sang, the two girls kissed.

"And Reggie," they sang, he stood up cheering happily.

"And me!" Kevin sang, the crowd all got to their feet.

"And all the strange Rock and rollers," they sang. "You know, you're doing all right."

"So hold on to each other," Betty, Veronica, and Callie sang. "You gotta hold on tonight."

"And you're shining like the brightest star," they sang, Cheryl joining in. "A transmission on the Midnight Radio. And you're spinning. Your new 45s"

"With all the misfits," Sweet Pea and Fangs sang louder than the others. "And the losers."

"Well, you know, you're rock and rollers," everyone joined in on the song singing. "Spinning to...Your rock and roll." Archie and Callie unplugged their guitars, Archie jumped off the stage, they all followed. They went up to the rooftop of Pops, everyone else was below. "Lift up your hands" The people down below were shining a candle. "Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands." The two Andrew kids had their backs to each other as they played on the guitars, looking down at the crowd. "Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands." Callie spotted Sweet Pea, he blew her kiss, she winked at him. "Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands. Lift up your hands... " Callie glanced back at Jughead, he nodded to her, she looked down at all the people with cameras and using their phones for video.

*****
After the variety show, Callie was down in the bunker with Jughead.

"Is the voyer turning the temperature up?" Jughead asked as he turned on the newest tape.

"Jug...I think it might be someone we know," Callie said softly.

"What makes you think that?" Jughead asked looking at her.

"How many people know where Sweet Pea's trailer is?" Callie asked. Jughead's eyes widened. "But who among the people we know would do this?"

"Hopefully these next set of tapes will give us more of a clue," Jughead hoped. They turned to the screen to see a paper machete Jughead, he was panting. As they watched, paper machete masked Betty walked up behind him.

"Hold on..." Callie breathed as they watched intensely. "This is from..." They watched the fake Betty hit the fake Jughead in the head with a rock. Whacking sounds continued as Betty continued to hit Jughead with a rock.

"They just stepped up their game," Jughead stated.

"If they were able to recreate this, what else have or are they going to create?" Callie asked. The fake Betty got mysteriously close to the screen, Jughead turned away turning off the screen.

"Prepare yourself, Cal," Jughead advised. "The voyuer had made their next move."
