Chapter 114

A new week had started, Callie woke up to the sound of Archie's alarm going off at 4:45 am. Hearing the alarm go off was useless to her, for she was still suspended from school. She checked her phone to see a voicemail from Sweet Pea. She pressed play, closing her eyes.

"Hey, we ended up having to go a bite out of Seaside, the guy we are looking for is proving to be difficult to catch, maybe a bit longer. See you when I get back, I love you." Callie sighed as she rolled over. About three hours later, Callie was downstairs getting a head start on her homework.

"So you really got suspended?" Mom asked as she made her way down the stairs.

"And banned from prom," Callie added. "Betty is suspended as well."

"The fact that it's you and Betty are suspended..." Mom began. "Something isn't right."

"We know," Callie sighed. "By the way, where is Uncle Frank? I was so busy he here and gone before I knew it."

"He left town," Mom answered. "No surprise there. Archie made us some coffee."

"If you want something fresher, I can brew it up," Callie offered.

"This will be just fine," Mom assured. "The fact you are suspended is good."

"How is this good?" Callie asked.

"You can work on more practice law cases," Mom stated as she poured her cup of coffee. "And there is nothing interrupt you all day." The law practice was shortly interrupted by Betty ringing on the doorbell, Betty dragged her all the way to Stonewall, they now sat in Jughead's room.

"I have to write the best damn Baxter Brothers novel these Stonies have ever read by Friday, which coincidentally is the Ides of March. You know, Stonewall Prep celebrates the holiday by throwing a big blowout in the woods," Jughead stated.

"Okay, well, then...Why don't you write about what's been happening to you here at Stonewall?" Betty suggested. "Like a roman-la-clef, let's say."

"Yeah, " Jughead nodded. "Like a prep school thriller.

"Sure," Betty nodded.

"We could start with my..."Jughead began.

"Start with Moose's arrival," Callie interrupted.

"Exactly," Betty agreed.

"You two are brilliant, you know that?" Jughead stated as he kissed Betty. He then went to work on his laptop, typing away.

*****
That night Callie was with Vegas in the shed doing homework, she had the music up when the door opened.

"Callie," a  voice greeted, she looked up to see her mom. "You didn't tell me you were having a friend over."

"Oh--" Callie began.

"Callie," a voice greeted as they stepped beside her mom, it was Bret and Donna.

"You kids have fun," Mom said as she went back to the house.

"Why are you two here?" Callie asked they stepped in closing the door.

"It's about the Ides of March," Donna stated. "It's Stonewall tradition to celebrate, but others are more welcome to come."

"Why would I come?" Callie asked.

"I had a feeling you would say that," Bret said as he held out a tape. He walked over to the tv.

"What is this?" Callie asked as Bret put in a tape.

"You love your boyfriend don't you?" Donna asked. "I'd hate how he react to this?" Bret hit play, on the screen, it was from when Callie went on her date with Bret and kissed him, on the inside, Callie was smiling, but on the outside, she was in complete shock. "If you wish to keep your slimy snake around, you better show up Friday."

"Right," Callie reluctantly.

"That's all for now," Donna stated. "Come Bret."  He took the tape before walking out.

*******

The next day, Callie headed over to Sweet Pea's trailer, she left some notes there, on her way, she got a call from him.

"Pea," Callie smiled as she answered the phone.

"I am so happy to hear your voice," Sweet Pea admitted.

"How is the job going?" Callie asked. "Be back by Friday?"

"Friday night," Sweet Pea answered as Callie walked down the path that led straight to the trailer.

"I'm being forced into going to some Stonewall holiday Friday," Callie stated.

"Forced?" Sweet Pea repeated as Callie looked back, she saw someone dart behind a tree.

"Jughead wouldn't take a no," Callie answered as she turned down a path that would take her in an opposite direction.

"Well, when you get home from that lame ass party, I will be here waiting for you," Sweet Pea said as his voice got soft at the end. " I have to go, I love you."

"I love you too," Callie responded quickly before he ended the call. She ended going back towards her house.

"Where are the notes?" Betty asked as Callie sat on the Jones's couch.

"I couldn't get it," Callie answered. "Someone was following me."

"What?" Betty asked.

"If I kept going, they would have figured out where his trailer was located, and go to the notes," Callie answered. "They aren't safe there anymore."

"Then we will just have to move them," Betty stated. "We will do it tonight." Callie nodded her head.

"We will need to gather some serpents," Callie said.

*****

Night came, Callie was on her way to the trailer alone once again, and it was pretty obvious that she was being followed. She purposely kept making wrong turns, while she led them astray, Betty was getting the notes that were left at Sweet Pea's trailer.

"Shortstop," Sweet Pea greeted once Callie answered the person calling her.

"Treetopper," Callie smiled.

"We got the job done and I will be coming home early," Sweet Pea informed.

"Maybe you can make it to the party," Callie hoped.

" I love you," Sweet Pea said.

"I love you too," Callie said before he hung up the phone. She turned the corner to see Bret standing there, he had a golf club.

"You've been leading me on a cold trail," Bret stated as Callie backed up. "Take me to the trailer, no more games Shortstop."

"I don't know what you are talking about," Callie stated.

"I was told that you would be going to Sweet Pea's trailer," Bret stated as he swung the golf club around. He stepped forward, she stepped back. "You of all people would know where it is, right?" Callie put her phone on the inside of her coat pocket.

"Why are you so interested in his trailer?" Callie asked.

"He has something that I want," Bret answered.

"You two only interacted once, I highly doubt that," Callie denied as she backed up more.

"But Donna heard you talking about having notes at his trailer," Bret brought up. "I am intrigued by what they could be."

"In case, you have forgotten, you did get me suspended," Callie reminded him.

"No, you got yourself suspended," Bret corrected. "I really wanted to play with you a bit longer, maybe even get a treat in return." He raised the golf club. Archie came out of nowhere, tackling him to the ground, he threw the golf club out of his hands, punching Bret a couple of times.

"Don't even think about touching my sister!" Archie shouted angrily.

"I was just playing," Bret said in defense as his nose spilled out blood.

"Hell no you weren't," Archie denied as he got up. He lifted Bret up by the collar, slamming him against a tree. "If I see you anywhere near my sister again, I will kill you." Archie shoved Bret towards the exit. "Get out of here!" Bret hurried off as fast as possible without looking back, Archie made his way over to his sister instantly. "Callie." He pulled her into a hug.

"Archie," Callie smiled as she hugged him back. "Thank you for helping me and Betty deal with this problem."

"That creep has been on you oddly," Archie stated. "When you said you thought he was stalking you, of course, I would agree to help, I'm not letting you go through what happened with Kurtz again."

"That was a long time ago," Callie said. "You weren't even home."

"And if I were, he would never have laid a hand on you," Archie said. "Not only I will protect this town, but you as well, you are my sister."

"Dad is smiley down upon you," Callie smiled. "He would be proud of everything you are doing."

"Same for you," Archie nodded.

****
It was not Thursday, Callie was in the Jones house.

"Mr. DuPont is turning out to be worse than any of his villains in his precious Baxter Brothers series," Jughead complained. "It's clear he wants me expelled."

"Can't let your name be tarnished by these, these trust fund brats," Fp stated. "Hell, it's my name. It's our family name."

"If I let my reputation be destroyed by a baseless accusation, my career as a writer is going to be over before it even begins," Jughead pointed out.

"There's no way that's happening, Jug," Betty denied. "I think I have an idea."

"Does it involve a lie detector?" Callie asked.

"Bingo," Betty confirmed. After getting in touch with Charles, they went to Stonewall. They waited for the other students to enter the seminar, the doors opened, Bret had bandages on his face.

"Jones, Betty, and Callie," Donna greeted. "To what do we owe the pleasure?"

"We know Jonathan's lying about writing "On Featherless Wings," Callie stated.

"And we know that one or all of you stole my laptop, and are conspiring against me," Jugjed stated. "So, we're here to prove it."

"With a...with a lie detector test?" Jonathan asked.

"Can you think of something else more efficient to do so?" Callie asked.

"Okay. Well, I refuse to participate in this charade," Jonathan refused.

"Fine," Betty said. "Then you can all watch while Jughead takes the test." Betty hooked up Jughead. "Is your name Forsythe Pendleton Jones 3?"

"Yes," Jughead answered.

"When did you start writing On Featherless Wings?" Callie asked.

"At the end of last summer," Jughead asked. "Before I'd even heard of Stonewall Prep."

"And did you get rid of your laptop because you know it contained incriminating evidence?" Betty asked.

"Of course not," Jughead denied. "It was stolen."

"And what exactly do you think this is proving?" Bret asked.

"Well, Jonathan's guilt by process of elimination," Betty answered.

"I hate it to break it to you, sweetie," Donna chuckled. "But this isn't gonna probe Jughead's innocence." Jughead took of the lie detector.

"Do you think I don't know that, bitch?" Betty asked as she walked over. "This lie detector test is only the beginning."

"Once we're done with all of you one-percenters, none of you will be left standing," Callie warned.

****
That night, Jughead, Callie, and Betty were breaking into Donna and Joan's room, Betty was using her bobby pin.

"Alright, let's hurry up," Jughead encouraged. "Donna and Joan are in film studies, but they could be back any moment." Seconds later, Betty got them in, Jughead quickly closed the door. "I never should have taken the laptop from Bret."

"We'll get it back, Juggie," Callie assured.

"Jug you take Joan's side, I'll take Donna's, and Callie hook up the mics," Betty ordered. The three immediately went to work. After searching the room, they went down to the Secret room in the basement. Jughead opened the door where the tapes were located, only to find them all missing. They quickly left for the seminar room. Jughead used his blade to crack open a drawer. On top was a folder, it was for the Baxter Brothers: READY FOR PRINT

"I thought they didn't like your previous story," Callie stated as Jughead opened the envelope.

"I'm curious too," Jughead stated as he pulled out the paper. "The Boy In The River?" He looked at the two in disbelief. "This is the novel that I submitted to win the Baxter Brothers contract."

"About Jason?" Callie asked as her voice softened.

"Yeah," Jughead confirmed. "DuPont told me that the Baxter Brotherhood rejected it because it wasn't dark or sociopathic enough."

"Mr. Blossom murdered his own son, it's pretty dark," Callie stated as Jughead flipped through the pages.

"It's definitely been re-written," Jughead sighed. "But this is my book."

"What do you want to do?" Betty asked as Callie took the book from Jughead.

"The only thing we can do," Jughead answered. Soon Jughead fished for DuPont to confront him, in the meantime, Callie read through it.

"Definitely not Jughead's writing," Callie stated. "I am not a damsel."

"In the original story, Jughead painted you, as the Riverdale's redhead sweet heart."

"Cheryl?" Callie asked.

"Cherry queen," Betty answered.

"Jason would be fuming over these changes," Callie sighed. "He would be so mad the changes they made on Cheryl's character." Soon Mr. DuPont came in, Jughead took the story from Callie's hands and slammed it on the desk in anger.

"I thought the Brotherhood didn't want my Boy in River novel," Jughead brought up.

"We didn't, and we don't," Mr. Dupont confirmed.

"Then what the hell is this?" Jughead demanded. "You really think I wouldn't recognize my own story after someone did a polish on it?"

"Oh, you really should have had a lawyer take a much closer look at your contract, Mr. Jones," Mr. DuPont warned.

"She was busy that day," Jughead said as he gestured to Callie.

"You see, the Brotherhood owns everything you submit," Mr. DuPont explained. "We kept the elements we liked, and then let another ghostwriter try their hand at it."

"Oh, yeah? Who?" Jughead asked.

"Well, actually, all of your classmates collaborated on it," Mr. Dupont answered.  Callie and Betty set to leave.

"Callie," Jonathan greeted walking up to her. "I have been meaning to talk to you.

"Go on B," Callie nodded as she stepped off to the side to talk to Johnathan. "What exactly do you need from me?"

"Approval," Jonathan answered. "We are both to be attending Harvard next year, we should be acquainted with each other."

"You one-percenter wants to be acquainted with me?" Callie aked.

"It won't be a bad idea," Jonathan answered.

"I'll put it into consideration," Callie said. "See you tomorrow." She stepped around him to leave. They went to Betty's room to work on her murder board.

"I've been thinking about Mr. Chipping's tie pin, Jug and Call, and how it does add up," Betty spoke after adjusting the board. "And Donna had it, it doesn't add up. If the affair with Chipping was just another one of Donna's fabricated stories, then how did she get it?"

"Let's assume that someone else took Mr. Chipping's tie pin," Callie suggested as she looked over the contract Jughead had with the Baxter Brothers.

"Someone like Mr. DuPont?" Jughead asked.

"Exactly," Betty smiled. "It's possible he gave it to Donna to add credibility about them having an affair."

"And then, she would have the tie pin and the story of the affair at the ready in case anyone got too close to the truth," Jughead concluded. "That Mr. Chipping was driven to suicide by Mr. DuPont. "

"It's a theory, at any rate," Betty stated as she faced the board again.

"Jughead, you really should given this to me to look at before you signed anything," Callie said.

"I'm sorry," Jughead scoffed as he looked at her. "You can be such a pain."

"A long-lasting one for you too," Callie agreed as she flipped the page.

*****
The next day came around, Donna sat in a booth across from Betty, drinking a strawberry milkshake. Callie was taking orders across the room, she had Betty hooked up to a device, as she listened in.

"I wasn't hoping to clear the air around us, Donna," Betty hoped. "And hopefully resolve this whole Jughead witch hunt thing, just the three of us." Donna didn't seem amused. "See, I think that you and Bret, Joan, and Jonathan are just pawns, being manipulated by Mr. DuPont, who I think is the real villain here."

"I'm intrigued, go on," Donna encouraged.

"I don't think you had an affair with Chipping," Betty said bluntly. "If I'm right, and you didn't, and DuPont somehow put you to saying you did, I implore you, come forward. Don't let yourself be a victim of his machinations, Donna." Donna smiled, letting out her chuckles.

"You think you're close to the truth, don't you?" Donna asked. "You, Jughead, and Callie, teen detectives."

"Are we?" Betty asked.

"I guess we'll see," Donna stated before getting up. She took some whipped cream with her finger, before walking away.

***
Later that day, Callie joined Fp and Betty in Jughead's trial in front of the school.

"Make no mistake, the stealing of another student's work will not be tolerated at Stonewall Prep," Mr. DuPont stated. "If the accusation is found to be true, the penalty is immediate expulsion. But we're going to give you a choice today, one that you do not deserve. Nevertheless, you can either gracefully, quietly withdraw from Stonewall Prep, which will save yourself and us the embarrassment of a hearing, or you can stay and fight the accusation of plagiarism in a public forum where you could win, but most likely, you'll lose, tarnishing Stonewall's name and destroying your future." Everyone stared at Jughead waiting for his answer.

"I'll leave," Jughead answered softly. All the Stonies were pleased with the answer, while the others were shocked.

"What the hell happened in there, huh?" Fp demanded as they walked out after the hearing. "I thought you were gonna bring down the temple, and instead you let them run roughshod all over you."

"What choice did I have?" Jughead asked finally facing his dad.

"It's not like you to walk away from a fight, a fight you could have won," Fp argued.

"You don't know that," Jughead shook his head. "You don't know these people. This game is fixed. It's been fixed from the beginning. There was no way I was winning that today." Fp angrily walked away

"Mr. Jones,"Callie breathed as she followed.

"This isn't like Jughead," Fp stated. "What is he thinking?"

"This school was going to end up getting rid of him no matter what," Callie said. "The same way they got rid of Moose, but probably worse."

"Huh?" Fp asked. "What is going on?"

"All in good time, you need to trust us for now," Callie said.

****

That night before the party, Callie was in Jughead's room helping him, at the moment she was talking to Sweet Pea on the phone.

"We are going to be late," Sweet Pea said. "Our tires ended up getting slashed."

"I understand," Callie sighed. "Is everyone alright?"

"We are all fine," Sweet Pea assured. "I guess I won't be your escort for that lame-ass party?"

"Guess not," Callie frowned.

"When I get back, we can go have a night out at La Bonne Nuit," Sweet Pea stated. "Or even the maple club."

"That would be fun," Callie agreed. "Missing you Treetopper."

"I miss you more, Shortstop," Sweet Pea stated. "Go have fun, you earned it."

"I love you," Callie said.

"I love you too," Sweet Pea said before Callie hung up the phone. She looked up to see Jughead staring at her.

"You got Sweet Pea, to say I love you?" Jughead asked.

"Oh hush," Callie glared at him. "Your hat is ready." He put it on. "You are going to be hit in the head with the intention to be killed, so the fake blood will be splattered, but so will yours, I am not sure how much cushion your hat and the fake blood pouches will protect you."

"I am prepared to be knocked out," Jughead assured. "Does Archie know about this? As far as I am aware, this plan is between, you, me, and Betty."

"Nor Veronica," Callie answered.

"You realize they will be taking your ring," Jughead said.

"I'm well aware," Callie sighed as she looked down at it. "My finger is going to miss."

"So the murder weapons are a rock, and your ring that gets lodged into my mouth," Jughead stated.

"Yes," Callie said. "We need to play this as if we had no idea it would happen."

"How did you get so good at this?" Jughead asked.

"I had some practice over the past couple of years," Callie answered as she stood up. "I'm sure you have too...all starting with Jason." Jughead stood. "I will see you again, and you will see me again, I am not going to let you die, I promise." Jughead grabbed his serpent jacket. Jughead kissed the top of her head, the way Archie would.

"You are going to kill it at Harvard, maybe even the FBI if you decide to make it part of your free time," Jughead said, Calle smiled a bit. "It would be no different from the current activities you have now, except it pays." Callie laughed lightly.

"Time to show that they picked the wrong town to mess with," Callie declared.

"Let's roll," Jughead stated as opened his switchblade.

****
Callie walked out of the school building, making her way over to the party, she quickly found her friends and brother.

"Gotta hand it to these jerks they know how to throw a party," Archie stated as he handed his sister a drink.

"Where's Jughead?" Betty asked. "I said we'd meet up with once we got here."

"He said he would be right out," Callie stated.

"I'm gonna do a lap, okay? See if I can find him," Betty informed.

"Here," Archie said handing his drink to Betty.

"Thanks," Betty breathed as she walked away.

"Callie!" a voice called, she looked over to see Joan waving her over.

"Time to go socialize with the preppies," Callie stated as she made her way over.

"Have a drink with us," Jonathan insisted. "We are toasting to the rest of the semester."

"Is that all you preppies talk about is school?" Callie asked as she stepped up to them.

"It gives us something to drink about," Joan stated. "That is a pretty ring you have." Callie held up her hand, as usual, her serpent ring was there.

"Thank you, it was a gift," Callie answered.

"What does it represent?" Jonathan asked as he took the ring off her finger.

"Hey, give it back," Callie urged as her eyes brows furrowed.

"I just want a closer look," Jonathan stated. "What does it represent?

"An alliance," Callie answered. "An alliance with the serpents."

"If your ring were gone, would that alliance still stand?" Joan asked.

"Of course," Callie stated.

"Let's put that to the test," Jonathan stated, he threw arched his arm throwing the ring far into the words.

"You ass!" Callie hissed, she stomped on her foot before going to look for the ring in the dark. She wasn't able to find it, she must've spent about ten minutes trying to find it, she turned her phone flashlight on as she traveled further into the dark.

"Cal?" Veronica asked walking up to her with Archie. "What's going on?"

"One of those jerks threw my ring," Callie stated. "They threw farther than I thought."

"We'll find it later," Archie assured. "We need to find Betty and Jughead."

"Right," Callie breathed as she gave up on her search. Soon they came to a section of the woods, they looked over to see Betty standing by a boulder, on the ground was Jughead, he was bleeding a lot.

"Oh, my god!" Veronica gasped as they rushed over. "What happened?"

"Jug?" Archie asked as they ran over. "Is he breathing?" Archie took his Jughead's pulse, Archie pulled down, he looked back at the other's.

'Those Stonies sure do know how hit hard,' Callie huffed to herself.

"There's no pulse," Archie reported. "He's dead. What did you do, Betty?" They all looked at the blonde girl holding the murder weapon.
