Chapter 35

Sophie's POV:

Keefe said we'd be doing something very... human today. I wonder what. I looked down in my blissfully boring and comfortable leggings and tunic. The t-shirt said in English, 'Back the T-Rex Up!' How we found Keefe's quote on it, no idea. But I like it. I got a small buzz from my Imparter. Keefe.

hey foster im ready -K

mk will be coming soon -S

Alrighty. I walked up the elaborate stairs of Havenfield to the Leapmaster.

"Shores of Solace!" the machine complied and I fluttered away in a whirlwind of light.

"Hey, Foster!" Keefe walked out from the porch door, looking as cute as ever in his blue hoodie, grey t-shirt, and jeans. He seemed happier today - dunno why. He even greeted me with a longer-than-usual hug... and kiss!

"Hello to you too, Keefe." He looked really hot. Why do I think so? I don't know. But he just did. Definitely cuter than your usual twenty-one year old guy. And he's mine.

Keefe's POV:

My hands fidgeted-fidgeted-fidgeted in my hoodie pocket. I fumbled, pulling the crystal out. I grabbed Sophie's hand, and we shimmered away, riding the ray of light. When the spots cleared, Sophie gasped.

A mish-mash of light and color spun before our eyes, towering tracks, booths, the smell of cinnamon and fried dough.

"Keefe. You brought me to an amusement park?" She beamed, bouncing on her toes, she was too cute when she did that. I nodded, and barely had time to grab her hand before she yanked me toward the entrance. First, she brought me to a strange booth with a delicious smell wafting into the air.

"Funnel cakes!!!" she squealed. Funnel cakes turned out to be the best freaking combination of cinnamon, sugar, dough, and strawberries. Well, there was that gelato some years ago, close call.

Those were interesting and fun times, with the Black Swan. But they were still both better than mallowmelt. Licking my fingers, we walked toward a strange spinning... thing. When it slowed to a stop, Sophie dragged me into it!

Holding hands, she told me to stand against the wall. I did, after a few seconds, the room began to spin. Slowly at first, then faster, and faster, and faster!

"What is this?!" I yelled, looking at Sophie. SHE WAS LAYING ON THE WALL?! HOW?! She obviously wasn't levitating. She laughed at my face,

"Try it!" shuffling slowly, I slid sideways until I was laying right next to her! On the wall! Without levitating! Pressure was holding us there as the room spun around and around and around. We laughed so hard, my eyes welled up, and the tears hit Sophie in the face!

"Hey!" she giggled, wiping her cheeks. Gradually, the ride slowed down, and the pressure lifted.

Sophie's POV:

We stumbled off of the spinning ride, and as I clutched Keefe's hand, I noticed the classic of all carnival and amusement park games. Bumper cars!

"KEEFE KEEFE KEEFE KEEFE KEEFE!!! BUMPER CARS!!" I bolted to the large arena-style cage. He could barely keep up. Even though we were in our early twenties, I couldn't resist. "Two one-seat carts, please!" I handed some tickets to the guy.

We hopped right in. After the voice telling us the safety procedures finished, I slammed down on the power pedal. "Alriiiight! Wooo-hoooo!" I crashed into Keefe and caused him to jump. "Catch me if you can!" I sped away, giving no mercy.

Bumper cars were my GAME. Keefe, however, was having trouble. It would not obey him.

"Stop! Stop! You stupid cart, STOP!" He slammed the wheel and yet the cart kept sliding around, being bumped around like a beach ball at a pool party.

"Sophie! Help!" I didn't pay attention. He would get it sooner or later. "Soooppphh!! Heeeelp!!" I heard more Keefe whining. He was laughing, though. Good sign.

A time later, Keefe clambered out of what he now calls a cursed vehicle. "Stupid thing," he muttered, with the most adorable stormy expression on his face. "Wouldn't move when I wanted it to."

"I love you," I said, batting my eyes up at him. "And you wouldn't die on bumper-carts, we haven't even ridden a roller coaster yet! OOOH! LOOK! TOSS THE BALL AND YOU GET A PRIZE! LOOK, KEEFE, I WANT A GIANT PANDA!"

I ran right over to a booth where you toss the basketball and after three shots, you get a stuffed animal of your choosing.

"Here you go! One try!" cheered the man. Keefe didn't seem to like the way he was looking at me. 'Don't worry, hon, if he gets too close I'll just yeet him over the bumper carts.'

"One!" I got it in. "Two!" Yep. "And... three!" YES! "I want the panda please!" I was so ecstatic!

"Hope you had fun, Missy." the booth guy winked at me. Keefe glared so fierce it could make flowers wilt.

"Watch it." he growled, "That's my girlfriend." Wisely, the guy backed up, looking scared.

Keefe's POV:

After that close call, Soph dragged me into a long line of people in front of some sort of rail track. I heard screaming coming from above, I looked up, half expecting to see Fintan lighting things on fire, but it was just a group of people in a long cart, arms up and shrieking as they went over a hill. I gulped.

When we got on the cart, which had nowhere near enough protection, I started sweating really bad. The bar clicked into place as Sophie fastened my seatbelt. Normally, I would have found this adorable and made a joke, but I was too terrified. She giggled at my expression,

"Keefe, are you scared?"

"NO!" I said, a little too quickly,

"NO!" she mimicked. Hey! I taught her that. The cart jerked forward, and Soph caught me before I hit my head. We lurched up a mountain, well, it seemed that way, and got an amazing view of the park.

"Woah." I breathed, Sophie poked my shoulder,

"Hang on!" she yelled.

"Wha- AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" I screamed as we plummeted down, the wind tore through my hair as we sped toward the ground, "Aw, come on!"

I said, fear forgotten. Sophie grabbed my arms and lifted them into the air, I shrieked, certain I was going to die. "I LOVE YOU FOSTER!", she grinned at me,

"You're not going to die, but thanks. Love you too, Keefe." When the ride of doom was finally over, I leapt up, and immediately fell on my butt. Laughing, Sophie helped me up, and pulled me to a bench.

I slumped against her, and we sat for a while, catching our breath. She sighed happily, leaning into me. Watching the world of humans whirl around us, I saw just how much like elves they really were. They all just wanted to be happy, with their friends, families, and lovers.

"Okay," she said, standing up. My head hit the bench. Ow.... "Time for..." she did an adorable little drumroll on the seat. "The Drop!" Before I could say a word, Sophie was dragging me toward a noticeably short line.

"Ummm Foster?" I gulped, terrified. She laughed again, and pulled me into our seats. The bars clicked over our necks and chest. Arms are not secure. "Foster?" I squinted and turned to my muffin. "I did not sign up for - AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!" We rocketed up for a second, then slowed down. CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.

We went up one notch at a time, each click a blow to the nails in my coffin. We were at the top. "Foster. I love you."

"I love you too, Keefe," was all I heard before I died.

Just kidding! I didn't die. But it sure felt like it.

We were dropping so fast I didn't have time to scream. Couldn't breathe. It lasted for centuries. Or just five seconds. We stopped halfway at a jerk that dislocated several of my joints. Foster looked at me with a brightness in her eyes that scared me. Adrenaline coursed through me.

"Goodness! You LIKE this?"

"Yep! Had these all the time in San Diego!" She smiled scarily. "They're real fun." We went back up. CLICK. CLICK. CLACK. CLICK. Aaaannnd the drop of my death. The bars lifted up.

"I think I left my stomach back there..." After that torture device, I begged to go on something smoother. She nodded,

"How about the ferris wheel?" I agreed, it looked gentle. After waiting in line, we climbed into a little compartment open to the air. Just me and Foster. A warm breeze whistled through the open windows as our little compartment climbed higher into the starry sky. We stopped a few times, then when our car rested atop the wheel, overlooking the bright, colorful lights down below, I knew it was time.

"Sophie?"

"Hmmm?" Breath in... and out. Why am I shaking? She turned around, hair glowing like gold. I cleared my throat,

"Probably from the first moment I met you, I was in love with you. All those years fighting the Neverseen, I loved you. When you 'dated' Fitz, I still loved you. I will never, ever stop. You are the only one for me. We've stuck together through every imaginable chaos. From window slumber parties," she grinned at this, remembering those lonely nights, "to sand fights, we've been together. Nothing can separate us," stop stalling, Keefe. "I wanted to ask... will you marry me, Sophie Elizabeth Foster?"

She looked stunned, and her eyes welled up.

"Yes." she whispered, "A million times, yes!" Laughing and crying tears of joy, she flung herself into my arms. I looked into her beautiful brown eyes, and kissed her.

Sophie's POV:

Yes! Finally! He proposed! And then he kissed me - it was sweeter and better than any other kiss he'd ever given me. He tasted like funnel cakes and ice cream. Gentle and slow, under the stars, well, ish, happy and together. After we stopped, I didn't know what to say, except -

"I love you, Keefe."

"I know you do." and he laughed and kissed me again.

Keefe's POV:

I melted against her, cradling my Sophie in my arms. We would never part again. When the wheel creaked forward, we just stood there, wrapped up in each other. I swear, her lips have never been so soft and addicting.

After years of wanting her, I finally got her. Energy fizzled through my limbs as she held me. I didn't even mind that she was playing with my hair. At last, she was mine. And I was hers.

Until the end of time.
