Chapter 62: Discount Time Lady

The turtles, Destiny, and Diaval lounge on a rooftop, the gentle wind stirring their mask tails or hair. Destiny sits on top of the maintenance shed and gazes up at the moon, the stars reflecting in the green pools of her eyes, and Diaval plays with one of his arrows next to her. Leonardo perches at the edge of the rooftop and stares out at the skyline.

"Give it up, Leo. There's nothing we can do," Raphael says, noticing the distant look in his brother's eyes. "It's been weeks since we last saw her, when she poisoned us!"

"Yeah, Leo. If we can't find a cure, we might have to let Karai go," Donatello adds, his voice soft and tentative. Diaval's head snaps up, his lips part, but then he slumps back into silence.

"It's not that easy, Donnie. You should know," Leonardo snaps without looking back at his family.

Michelangelo perks up, wiggling his non-existent eyebrows at Donatello. "Cause you're still hung up on April," he coos. Donatello narrows his eyes and a low growl sounds in his throat. "Just a guess."

Leonardo sighs and shakes his head, his head drooping towards the ground although he's not looking at anything in particular. "Sometimes you don't have a choice. You think about someone...a lot," he murmurs.

Destiny looks away from her favourite celestial body with a raised eyebrow. "What do you mean by that?"

"Is wittle Weo still cwushin' on Kawai?" Michelangelo teases, making kissing noises with his lips and fluttering his eyelids.

That gets Leonardo to turn around, his lips pulled into a sneer. "No, I'm not. Not anymore," he snaps.

"Kinda crossing a line, Mikey," Diaval mutters, nearly dropping his arrow. He gasps and recovers the weapon. "Y'know..."

Destiny crosses her arms tightly over her chest and swivels her body away. "Whatever, not like it matters anyway," she mutters.

Diaval glances at her, then at Leonardo. Leonardo is staring at her with pursed lips and a stoic expression, but when Diaval searches their desires, they're similar and easy to be fulfilled yet again. Leonardo cringes and rubs the back of his neck, then glares at Diaval.

"Hey, stay out of my head," he demands.

Diaval shrugs. "Sorry."

Silence blankets them. Raphael looks between his silent family members, fidgets, then groans as he gets to his feet. The mood needs to change, fast, and he's feeling it.

"Hey Des!" he calls. She glances at him and as soon as she's looking, he flashes a wide grin. "You should've seen Leo when you left! It was like this but times ten. There were tears and moping and gazing off into the distance broodingly—"

"Oh-kay, Raph, that's enough," Leonardo orders as his cheeks turn pink and he ducks his head away.

Destiny, however, doesn't laugh. Her ears flatten against her hair and she tucks her legs to her chest, burying her lips against her knees. Diaval gazes at her for a second before he switches to the somewhat expectant Raphael.

"She wants you to stop," he states. Raphael narrows his eyes and frowns deeply.

More silence. This time, Donatello steps up to plate when it gets too stifling.

"So...uh, Diaval, do you have your eye on anyone?" he asks.

Leonardo and Raphael's eye-ridges arch in perfect synchronization. Diaval blinks a few times as his pale skin gains a hint of blush and the arrow stills in his hands. Destiny's ears swivel towards him even though the rest of her body doesn't budge.

"Uh..." Diaval mumbles. "There's...someone in Canada. Name's Melanie. She's pretty."

"Dude, what?" Michelangelo gasps. He lurches to his feet. "Tell us more! What's she look like? How old is she?"

"Red hair, black eyes...uh, she's twenty-five—"

"Woah, an older woman," Raphael whistles. He laughs, and for once it isn't mocking or degrading. "Didn't expect that from you."

Diaval turns even redder even though his expression stays blank. "She's Destiny's therapist."

Donatello's eyes widen and he looks up at Destiny. "You got a therapist? That's great!"

Destiny's pupils swivel to him as she bobs her head once. "Yeah. It was Diaval's idea."

"I can't believe you've got a Canadian lady friend, Diaval!" Michelangelo exclaims. "I want to meet her!"

Diaval shakes his head. "Probably doesn't like...m..." He doesn't finish the sentence, his mouth already firmly burrowed in the collar of his cloak. "Whatever. Doesn't matter, suppose..."

Michelangelo ponders his words, then spins around and raises his finger into the air. "Dudes, I've decided that I'm never gonna have a crush on a girl!" he proclaims. "Uh-uh, no way, no sir." He jabs his thumb against his plastron as he winks. "This turtle's dedicated to one thing and one thing only: ninja-ing. Oh yeah!"

He whips out his nunchucks and dances around, making them spin as he whoops and laughs with his improvised steps. Destiny unfurls herself from her self-hug slightly as she watches him. Her tail wags.

"Yo Mikey! I got a little ninja-ing for you right here!" Raphael shouts, revealing a large water hose.

He sets it off, spraying Michelangelo as Leonardo gasps and tries to avoid the spray. Raphael spins the nozzle to Donatello, forcing the turtle to shield his face as his face splits with a wide grin.

"Raph!" Donatello splutters through his laughter.

"Shell soaker!" Raphael taunts. "Heads up, D and D!"

Destiny and Diaval shriek and try to evade the spray as Raphael switches it to every mutant that he can. Diaval stands in place like a sodden puppy, his expression slack with shock, but there's a spark in his eye that can't be missed.

"Hey! HEY!" Destiny exclaims as she tries to use Leonardo as a meat shield.

"Hope you don't mind the smell of wet dog!" Raphael hoots.

Donatello sneaks up behind his brother and snatches the hose, soaking the previously dry turtle to the bone. Michelangelo retreats into his shell as the spray nearly hits him and Diaval smacks at the stream as he starts to smile. Their laughter rings in the night.

There's a buzzing noise and a rectangular patch of light opens up in the sky, ceasing their antics. From the window of light, a girl appears with a large sceptre in her hand. She wears a dark blue leotard dotted with glowing lights, light blue leggings beneath, dark blue boots and gloves, a blue cape, silver shoulder pads and gauntlets, and an intricate blue and silver helmet. She smiles, but then her sceptre stops glowing and she plunges towards the ground with a scream.

"Whoa!" Michelangelo yelps, racing forwards with his arms held out in an attempt to catch her. She lands on him with a thud, his eyes spiralling as she pushes herself up. Michelangelo sits up too, blinking a few times. "Are you okay?" he asks.

She looks up at him, her brown eyes meeting his blue, and he gasps and scoots away. She shakes her head once more as she settles onto her knees, her gaze travelling to the other five spectators lingering nearby. A sharp inhale of breath passes her lips.

"Whoa! The leader, Leonardo," she says in awe, making Leonardo give her a confused look. She looks to Destiny and Raphael next, her excitement gaining. "The tracker, Destiny, and the warrior, Raphael!" More blank looks. She continues down the line. "The inventor, Donatello, and the cute one, Michelangelo!"

"Hey, that's me!" Michelangelo grins. "She knows us, dudes!"

"Tracker?" Destiny echoes, gently touching her nose as her tail flicks.

"Wow! You guys...this is great! You look even freakier in person, Destiny!" the girl rambles, standing up and moving to the wolf girl so that she can stare intensely at her face. "Those scars...wow, you look so tough. The pictures in the books don't do them justice!" She gasps and grabs her arms, lifting them up. "Your arms too!"

"Hey, give me some space, please," Destiny requests, pulling her arm away and flicking her hair over the scarred half of her face.

The stranger's face falls when she notices Diaval lingering at the edge of the group. "Wait, you're..." She points, then pouts. "Oh grok, I went too far back!"

"Too far back?" Leonardo asks. "What—"

"If the sorcerer is here, then the scientist is missing! That's so not cold," she mutters, ignoring the growing confusion in her companions. "I was so hoping to meet her too! I based some of my outfit off of hers—"

"Scientist? Her?" Donatello utters. "It's...it's just us six, I think, and Destiny's the only girl."

The girl blinks a few times, then lets out a giggle. "Of course you wouldn't know, it's not time yet! Well, at least I found you six." Her face seems to slacken as her own words sink in. "I actually found you, the Mutant Warriors of Legend! This is so grokking cold!"

"Us? Legends? What the heck are you talking about?" Raphael demands. "Nobody even knows we exist!"

"Nobody knows," she says, "yet. But, I come from the future and...wow," she swoons. "You guys are, like, so famous. Meeting you is way more interesting than meeting Genghis Khan...or Billy the Kid...or Socrates!" She looks at Leonardo and Destiny. "You two are still my favourite historical couple, right next to Antony and Cleopatra."

"I'm...we're...Cleopatra?" Destiny echoes, placing a hand on her forehead. "I think I ate some bad pizza..."

"We're not...uh..." Leonardo points between the two of them, but can't find the words.

"Please. You're saying you're from the future and we're important enough to be in history books?" Donatello asks. "You expect us to believe that?"

"Yes. You save the world...many times," the girl responds. "And even your ki—" She covers her mouth. "No, I can't give away too much. That'd mess too much up!" She laughs a little. "But yes! I'm from the future!"

"Awesome! High-three!" Donatello whoops.

Everyone except Michelangelo and Diaval slap their hands together. Diaval is still trying to put together everything that he's just heard. Michelangelo is focused on the girl out of time.

"Hey there. The name's Michelangelo, but you can call me Mikey," he says, posing. "Angelo is my middle name. What's yours?" He zips around to her back. "Let me guess. Future Girl? Amazonian Princess? Wonder Warrior?"

"Uh, nope. My name's Renet. I'm a Time Master," she says, lifting her sceptre into the air. It slips and she lets out a short squeal before catching it. "Okay...Assistant Time Master in training," she corrects with a sheepish smile.

Michelangelo swoons. Leonardo and Destiny's eyes widen.

"Like...like a Time Lord?!" Leonardo demands.

"Do you have a time machine?" Destiny asks. "Have you ever met creepy aliens that try to upgrade you or steal your face?!"

"More to the point, Headdress," Raphael cuts in, shoving the pair of sci-fi nerds away from Renet. "Prove to us that you're from the future!"

Renet shrugs. "Um...well, I could name off your accomplishments or the names of your children, but that's better left alone. Don't want to spoil too much!"

"Kids?" Leonardo utters.

"Whose kids? Ours?" Donatello inquires.

"Just Leo and Destiny's?" Michelangelo suggests.

The mentioned mutants turn beet red and look at one another. Leonardo's gaze darts down her body and she instantly averts her eyes, covering her hand with her mouth. Leonardo keeps giving her shy side glances. They let out nervous laughs.

"Oh, right. Almost forgot why I came!" Renet says, smacking herself on the forehead. "I was kind of followed by an evil freak from the future who wants to control all of time and space."

"Uh, wait a minute. What did you just say?" Leonardo asks. His face is still flushed from the kids comment.

"She said she was followed—" Diaval starts.

Thunder cracks as another square of light appears. A bulky form appears from it and hovers for a moment before landing on the rooftop with the grace that Renet lacked in her own landing. He's a huge mutant beast with horns, yellow skin, a tail, and cloven hooves. He wears golden armour on his wrists and a large piece of clothing—vaguely resembling a loincloth—around his waist. His eyes are a mixture of red and yellow.

"It's him," Renet gasps as the turtles usher her behind them. "Savanti Romero."

Savanti looks around, his eyes lidded and his jaw slack. He looks utterly bored with the scenery. "How droll," he states, a slight accent to his voice. "The early twenty-first century? Why would you pick this era?" His attention falls on the cluster of teenagers before him, their weapons brandished and Renet herded to a safer position behind them. "Oh, I see: the Mutant Warriors. Seems they're a few mutants short and a few humans too many." He chuckles. Diaval squirms. "Of course, but you must realize that they can't defeat me. Your history is wrong. Give me the Time Sceptre and I shall let you live."

"We're right here. Talk to us directly, Savanti whoever-you-are," Destiny snaps.

"Ninjas, let's welcome this freak New York style!" Leonardo orders.

The turtles and Destiny rush at them as Diaval releases an arrow. Savanti presses a button on his wrist gauntlet and a yellow force field surrounds him. The five mutants stick to it and the arrow freezes in midair. Savanti sweeps his hand and sends them flying like nothing. Diaval gasps as Raphael plows into him

"Give it to me, girl," the demon demands, storming towards Renet.

She narrows her eyes. "Not this time," she states.

She readies the sceptre as the hourglass in the centre starts to glow. She fires an orb of yellow light at Savanti, sending him tumbling head over heels through a new space-time window, bellowing "NO!" the entire time.

"Whew..." Renet gasps as the mutants behind her get back up. "Wow. That was, like, the most evil Time Master ever, right?" She spins the sceptre, but it escapes her grip and she has to stoop to pick it up again. "No worries. I sent him one hundred million years into the past."

Donatello lifts his hand up. "I think I speak for us all when I say," he starts, "that we have no idea what is going on!" His eyes bug out and he has to take a few deep breaths.

"Yeah, sorry, let me explain everything," Renet says. She clears her throat. "In the future, we Time Masters are the protectors of time, space, and reality itself. I'm apprentice to the top guy in our order, Lord Simultaneous. Last night, someone tried to steal the Time Sceptre, a piece of tech so advanced that it can not only control time, it can bend reality itself. It was Savanti Romero, the evil mutant Time Master. With the sceptre, he could rule all of reality, changing history to suit his cruel whims, so I took it from him and used it to lure him to the one era he could be defeated in: now, by the famous Mutant Warriors!"

She smiles widely. Everyone else blinks and Diaval coughs into his elbow once.

"But we didn't defeat him. You did," Leonardo says. "So history was totally wrong."

As if on cue, the hourglass inside the sceptre glows and flashes dimly. "Oh, grok. This isn't good," Renet mumbles. "Savanti is making changes in the past. He's trying to wipe us out in the present."

"He can do that?" Donatello asks.

"Oh yeah, that happens a lot. I guess I should've let you guys defeat him, like history said." She sighs, her long lashes fluttering slightly as she gives them a pleading look. "Can you help me?"

"Help you? We don't even know you," Raphael snaps. He scratches the lightning chip in his plastron with a grunt.

"You helped me when you didn't even know me," Destiny says.

"Yeah, but that's only because Leo has this 'save the damsels in distress' thing."

"Hey!" Leonardo pouts.

"Come on, guys," Michelangelo says with a grin. "One day we're going to be famous for doing great things! This is one of them."

He sticks his hand up and poses. Thunder cracks as a giant swirling cloud opens above the rooftop, making Michelangelo whimper and hide behind Donatello. A giant, bald white head with pupil-less eyes appears in the cloud.

"RENET!" the head bellows.

"Lord Simultaneous? Aw, man. I'm so busted," Renet whines to herself.

"Foolish child, what have you done?" the Lord Simultaneous head yells.

"We gotta get out of here," Renet urges. "Lord S is gonna kill me!" She dashes away, opening a new window and leaping through it.

"Renet, wait for me!" Michelangelo shrieks.

He races after her, making his siblings scream out for him to stop. He disappears into the window with his signature cry. They stare at it for a second, unsure of how to react. Leonardo shrugs and everyone except Raphael takes off for the square. After a second, Raphael too follows.

"Renet, you cannot escape me!" Lord Simultaneous warns. "I will find you! AHHHHH!"

The window closes as the head vanishes from the sky.
