Chapter 6: A Foot Too Big
Destiny tilts her nose to the sky as her and Raphael walk side by side through the trees. She inhales, a blissful smile curling across her scarred face.
"Oh yeah, this is my element," she sighs.
Raphael hops over a fallen log, glancing sideways at her. "This place is really working for you, huh?"
She shrugs. "Hey, wolves fit better in a forest than in a sewer. I'm just getting back to my roots."
He laughs lightly, but his smile loses its glimmer and becomes more melancholy. "I'm just...glad that you're feeling better. Everything with Leo was..." He trails off. She looks at her feet briefly. "...difficult. I was worried about you."
"Aw, you softie," she murmurs.
He snorts. "I'm not a softie."
"Whatever you want to believe," she says in a sing-song tone.
They drift back into silence. Raphael exhales heavily, kicking a loose stone as he walks over it. It bounces across the grass and rolls into a small puddle. Destiny does a little spin, holding her arms out like wings.
"Des, why did you end it with Leo?" he asks. She stiffens up, her lips pressing tighter. "I've been wanting to ask you ever since Leo told us what happened, and—"
"Raph, please don't make me feel any guiltier than I already do," she whispers, her ears drooping.
"I won't," he says. He crosses his arms over his plastron as she shuts her eyes. "But...just tell me, is it because of Diaval?" Destiny's gaze is on him in an instant, his own glare edging on infuriated. "It's not my business who you want to be with, but Diaval over Leo? That's a mistake."
"Diaval is my friend," she snaps. "Nothing more, nothing less. Leo and I..." She kicks the nearest stick and sends it flying. "I wasn't right for him. I'm...not right for him."
He arches an eye-ridge. "Tell that to Leo."
She doesn't say another word, her face flushed. Before Raphael can try to talk again, screams pierce the air and they stop in their tracks. They turn to see Donatello and Michelangelo dashing towards them at full speed.
"RUN!" Donatello shouts.
"Come on, you're not even trying to hide!" Raphael says.
"BIGFOOT!" they holler as they race past the two mutants.
"Yeah, right," he scoffs as he turns around. "If you think you're gonna get out of cleaning that coop by—"
"Um...Raph?" Destiny's eyes widen and she grabs his shoulder, forcefully turning him around.
His mouth falls open when he sees what's in front of them. A giant ape-like creature, covered in fur and snarling, stands before them. Suddenly, the "Bigfoot" scream makes far more sense.
Raphael grins, his eyes flashing with excitement. He unsheathes his sais and spins them. "Looks like we're gonna get some real training."
Donatello and Michelangelo ready their weapons. The three turtles shout and rush the apeman, save for Destiny. Call it her wolf instincts, but she doesn't think that this so-called Bigfoot is trying to hurt them.
"Booyakasha!" Michelangelo shouts as he leaps onto Bigfoot's neck.
The gargantuan ape scrambles away, making the orange-masked turtle ram into a tree. He turns around and keeps fighting back against Raphael and Donatello. He looks at Raphael's sais, his eyes sparking with an idea before he snaps two branches off the nearest trees and wielding them.
Raphael rushes Bigfoot, their weapons clashing. Bigfoot disarms Raphael with a heavy sweep of his branches, making the red-masked turtle's mouth fall open in shock again.
"Bigfoot got some skills," he exclaims.
"HIYAH!" Donatello whoops as he zooms towards Bigfoot with bō staff at the ready.
Bigfoot throws his arm up, making Donatello grab his furry forearm in shock. Bigfoot starts to shake him wildly, his blue eyes swimming with pain as he whimpers.
Donatello looks down and notices cuts on Bigfoot's skin. His russet eyes soften. "Hey, are you—"
Raphael and Michelangelo attack again, making the ape throw Donatello off his arm. The turtle hits the ground next to Destiny and she moves to help him up. Bigfoot grabs Michelangelo's head, lifting him off the ground as he screams and struggles.
"Stop!" Donatello yells as he scrambles to his feet. Raphael stops fighting. Michelangelo stops flailing. Donatello moves closer to Bigfoot as he makes a nervous noise. "Guys, he's hurt. I don't think he wants to fight us."
"He's scared," Destiny says. "Donnie's right."
"What? How do you know?" Raphael wonders.
She looks back at him, her eyes becoming pained briefly. "I'm speaking from the experience of being a scared wild animal, Raph. You come to recognize a few things." She returns her attention to the ape, giving him a warm smile. "Bigfoot, could you please put my brother down? You could hurt him."
"Scared," Bigfoot rumbles, lowering the orange-masked turtle to the ground slowly.
"He can talk?" Raphael exclaims.
"Look at that sagittal crest. It could be a Paranthropus robustus, a hominid long thought extinct!" Donatello mutters, completely shocked. He looks up at Bigfoot, holding his hands up to show that he's not wanting to harm him. "Okay, okay, easy now. Easy. I can fix your arm if you let me."
Bigfoot whimpers and pants a little, eyes still wide. "Hurts..."
"It's okay. I want to help." He takes his hand and pats the fur gently, looking at the cuts again. "It's not bad, but I'd like to take you home where we can clean it up and bandage it. Is that okay?"
"No way! We can't bring a giant apeman home with us!" Raphael insists.
"Of course we can," Donatello argues. "Des? Mikey?"
Destiny nods. "Seems only fair."
The orange-masked turtle sits up, a dazed smile on his face as he sticks his thumb up. "Injured woodland creature? Bring him home."
"Three to one, Raph. Sorry." Donatello grins triumphantly. He looks up at Bigfoot again. "Hi," he says with a wave. He gestures to each mutant as he says their name. "I'm Donnie. This is Raph, this is Mikey, and the wolf girl is Destiny."
"I..." Bigfoot rumbles.
"I? Okay, your name is I?" Donatello asks. Destiny giggles while Raphael smacks his forehead.
"I...no name," the ape finishes.
"Of course you have a name. You're Bigfoot!" Michelangelo laughs.
Bigfoot looks at his feet, then grins. "Bigfoot!" He laughs loudly.
"Bigfoot, will you come with us?" Donatello asks.
He whimpers and looks behind the group. Destiny glances over her shoulder, her tail quivering as she sniffs the air, just able to catch the faint scent of smoke. There's something else there and it doesn't smell friendly.
"It's okay," Donatello soothes, leading Bigfoot back to the farmhouse. "You're gonna be safe with us." Destiny ignores her uneasy feeling and follows the turtles and their new friend. "No need to be scared."
"Why would he be scared of us?" Raphael asks.
"I don't know, dude. I don't know." Michelangelo shrugs.
Destiny doesn't offer a response.
