Chapter 41: The Naming of Bebop & Rocksteady

A sinister cackling noise echoes through the ghost house. Paintings of monsters decorate the walls, cardboard cutouts and life-size figurines are propped up in any dead space, and fake bats hang from the ceiling. It's your typical scary carnival attraction.

Leonardo presses onwards, his face set in a determined glare. Destiny looks around at the different paintings, finding none of them remotely scary in the slightest. Her fears are nothing like these. Diaval sticks to keeping watch outside under the guise of needing fresh air, but the others know that he just really doesn't want to go into the dark, confined space.

Michelangelo is a similar story.

"Uh, this place isn't so bad," he gulps, his voice quavering.

Frankenstein's monster appears in their path, making each of them jump and let out short screams. Leonardo narrows his eyes, stepping forwards and pressing his hand against the cutout with an unimpressed look.

"It's just a painted board," he says.

A goblin head drops down right in front of him, roaring. He screams, unleashing his katanas and cutting the thing down as he pulls Destiny against him. He pants, katana aimed at the fallen head, and Destiny squirms in his grip.

"Leo...you're smothering me," she gasps, trying to get her face away from the sturdiness of his bicep.

The blue-masked turtle releases her and straightens up, clearing his throat. "Sorry, uh...just protecting you," he says.

She arches an eyebrow and smirks. Her teeth glint in the dim light. "Sure, Leo. Let's say you were."

Michelangelo lets out a laugh and creeps past them. "That didn't scare me at all," he claims.

He takes one more step, screams at nothing, and hugs Leonardo's arm, curling his body upwards so that he hangs in the air. His brother shoots him a glare, to which the younger turtle releases another nervous laugh.

"Have you been working out?" he squeaks.

Destiny eyes Leonardo's biceps momentarily, absentmindedly moistening her lips with her tongue. Leonardo glances over at her and snaps his fingers in front of her nose, making her let out a quick bark of surprise. She blinks a few times, composing herself. Leonardo flashes a grin.

A faint hissing sounds through the darkened house, making the three mutants tense up, and Karai zips by in the hallway ahead of them. The trio goes after her, moving into the part of the attraction that's filled with mirrors. Leonardo holds his finger up to his lips, earning an understanding nod, and he readies the retro-mutagen before they press on.

Leonardo peeks around a corner, just able to see Karai's back from where he is. Leonardo pulls the trigger on the retro-mutagen and releases the orange cloud, but it hits the surface of a mirror instead. They round the corner to see the real Karai at a different spot, and she hisses at them loudly before taking off.

"Guys, don't let her escape!" Leonardo shouts, sprinting after her.

Their footsteps echo against the metallic floors. Michelangelo stops in front of some mirrors, giggling and waving his arms around as his reflection wiggles and wobbles. Destiny doubles back and grabs his arm.

"Come on," she urges, tugging him along after her and Leonardo.

They split up, Destiny managing to keep on Karai's tail as she deftly avoids the confusing maze of mirrors by following the snake's scent trail. She can hear Leonardo and Michelangelo shouting behind her, their confusion evident by their raised tones.

"I got her! OOF!"

"She's right here!" Another grunt of pain. "Karai!"

Destiny breaks out of the ghost house, just able to catch sight of Karai as she flees the scene. The wolf mutant grits her teeth and pushes herself forward, morphing into a wolf as she launches over top of Karai. She touches down, skids into a 180 degree turn, and jolts to a stop in front of the snake, hackles raised. Karai stops, letting out a warning hiss.

Racing footsteps come from behind and Karai's head snaps to Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Diaval. Destiny returns to her humanoid form, her claws unsheathed as she poises herself to halt any attempt at escape.

"Karai, we want to help you," Leonardo says, slowing to a stop and reaching his hand out to his sister. "Don't you remember us?"

Karai hisses and, in a flash, pounces on Michelangelo. He screams and flails against her grip, kicking his legs and thrashing his head to and fro.

"Aah! Get it off, get it off! She's trying to eat me!" he shrieks.

"Karai, it's us. It's me...Leo," Leonardo pleads. "Try and remember. Focus."

Karai gets off of Michelangelo and slithers back a few inches, her green eyes latched on them. Leonardo doesn't break her stare, poker faced, and she loses some tension in her posture.

"Leo," her weak voice sounds.

"Karai," Diaval speaks. Her slender body curves towards the tall boy as he takes a step towards her. His eyes are wide and his lips are puckered. He looks like an innocent, six foot tall child. "You remember...m...m-me, don't you? Came back, like...I said I-I would."

She leans closer to him, her head tilting. "Di...aval..."

"We want to help you, Karai," Leonardo says gently, moving closer to her. "Can you transform back?"

There's a low rattling sound from her throat, but she doesn't transform. She looks at Leonardo with sadness in her gaze, then at Diaval. Her lips part, but any words are halted as the tires of a white van screech to a halt nearby. The snake mutant immediately dashes for cover.

"Karai!" Destiny calls, but she's already gone.

Leonardo makes a covert whistling noise and jerks his hand towards himself. The other three scatter after him and they disappear from sight.

Zeck leaves his van and scans the area through his goggles. He snorts and touches a fingertip to his transmitter phone. "Are you here yet, Steranko? What's the deal, yo?" he demands.

"Da, comrade, look behind you." Zeck spins around to see the Russian rhino moving towards him with Casey and Raphael tucked under his arm or draped over his shoulder. "Whoo! Rhino legs very fast!" he exclaims. "Good workout. Better than the Pilates."

They open the back door to the van, immediately earning screeches of rage from April. Donatello is still unresponsive.

"You can't do this! We have friends that are gonna kick your butts!" she snaps.

Raphael and Casey groan as they're chucked inside. April promptly shuts up. The door closes again and the two Foot mutants look at each other, Steranko's ears flicking as if smacking invisible flies.

"So, other turtles are here? Da?" Steranko asks. "Is wolves girl here too?"

Zeck sniffs and snorts a little as his goggles beep. "Turtles! Come out and play!" He snorts again as he wanders around. His goggles zoom in on the thermal heat of Michelangelo crouched in his hiding spot. "Gotcha!" he cries. "If you surrender, the humans go free."

"Pinkie promise," Steranko cuts in, wiggling his pinkie.

"Forget it. We don't trust you dudes," Michelangelo snaps. From nearby, the other three hardly dare to breathe.

"You has no choice. In five second, I pop humans' head like the blueberries," Steranko threatens.

As Zeck starts counting down, Leonardo gives silent hand gestures to his team. Two of them nod in confirmation. Diaval blinks and shrugs. Leonardo rolls his eyes and dips out via another route to carry out their plan.

"A-four, a-three, a-two, a-one!" Zeck calls.

"Okay, don't hurt them! Let's talk this over," Michelangelo says as he leaves his hiding spot. "Um, what do we call you guys now, anyway? You need mutant names."

Steranko and Zeck give each other confused looks. Michelangelo glances at the van, where Leonardo is now trying to unlock the back. He urges his little brother to keep it up with a few circular hand waves.

"Um, and it just so happens I am awesome at naming stuff!" Michelangelo says, placing one hand on his plastron. His eyes fall on a food vendor, quickly reading the name. "How about Pork Rind and Chili Cheese Fry?"

"Ha!" Zeck scoffs.

"Nyet, nyet. Not so good names," Steranko huffs.

Michelangelo looks around again, his attention falling on another food stand. "How about...Sprinkles and Hot Sauce?"

"Nyet," they both growl, moving closer to him.

The little turtle whimpers. "The Royal Weenies?"

"NYET!" they both snarl, towering over him even more.

Michelangelo giggles as sweat beads on his brow, his gaze flickering back to the van. There's a logo on the side depicting a jazz duo. "Then how about, um...Bebop and Rocksteady?" Michelangelo suggests.

"Is that what you do? Randomly name enemies based on stuff you see around you?" Zeck demands, getting up in the orange-clad turtle's grill.

"Hey, is not so bad. Kind of like the Rocksteady," Steranko says, his tiny rhino ears flicking with pride.

Zeck, or Bebop, snorts and smacks his own face. His goggles beep and he jerks his head back up, finally noticing Leonardo trying to unlock the van. He zips over in a split second and aims his laser-blasting gloves at the leader in blue.

"Aha! You think you can get past my goggles, son? I saw you a mile away," Bebop exclaims, his voice high-pitched.

"Hyah!" Michelangelo yells, smacking the warthog away with a well-aimed hit from his nunchucks.

Bebop shakes his head and pulls out the retro-mutagen gun he retrieved from Donatello and April. Rocksteady flexes and throws his arms in the air.

"No one can face the Bebop and Rocksteady!" he calls.

"I am not going to be called Bebop, got me? That is the dumbest name ever!" Bebop shouts.

"He's got the retro-mutagen!" Michelangelo shrieks.

"Retro-mutagen, huh? I'm wondering what it'll do to mutant turtles," Bebop says, aiming the nozzle at Michelangelo. The turtle puts his hands up and gulps.

Destiny skids a stop outside yet another broken down funhouse, catching her breath as she sniffs the air. She turns in a slow circle, the darkness not bothering her in the least. She inhales deeply again and the smell of snake enters her nose.

"Karai?" she calls softly.

There's a hissing behind her as the snake mutant appears, her gaze menacing. Destiny holds her hands up and flattens her ears against her hair as she crouches lower to the ground.

"Dessstiny," Karai rasps.

The wolf takes a deep breath, daring to take a step or two closer to her once-enemy. Karai hisses defensively, throwing her snake hands up so that they also hiss at Destiny. She doesn't flinch, her gaze locking with the snake's.

"Karai," she repeats, her tone calm yet edging on stern. "I need your help."
