Chapter 20: Eye of the Chimera

Early the next morning, Donatello and April are hard at work in the barn. April waits patiently on a stool, looking up at the Kraang-like headpiece fastened around her head while Donatello searches for metal clamps near her.

"Um, Donnie, is this thing safe?" she asks.

Donatello chuckles softly. "Absolutely," he promises, turning to her and clicking some clamps together. He reaches over and attaches them to electrical prongs, mumbling to himself. "Now let me adjust the straps and plug this baby in."

He turns on a box that resembles a radio, lighting up the purple accents. He swivels a knob as the machine buzzes. April's mouth opens in nervousness as the headpiece begins to light up, whirring faster and faster.

Before anything happens, the machine shuts off with a quick shower of sparks and a bit of smoke. April blinks and pouts. Donatello groans and Dr. Cluckingsworth lets out an assuring cluck as she glances at the machine.

"Whoa, April," Michelangelo says as he walks into the barn. "Check you out! Is that a tiara? I love tiaras."

"It's not a tiara," Donatello says, his voice holding the bite of irritability. He adjusts the headwear as April observes. "It's a psychic neurotransmitter."

"Whoa..." the orange-masked turtle gawks. He points at his brother. "That was my second guess."

"Donnie salvaged it from the Kraang ship," April says. "He's going to use it to test my psychic powers."

"Cool!" Michelangelo gushes as he settles down next to her. He folds his arms beneath his head and rests his chin on it.

"Okay, starting...now," Donatello says, restarting the machine. He starts tuning the dial, watching April closely as he keeps fiddling with the knob. "You feel anything?"

The machine whirs and beeps. The little bars at the front of the transmitter start to glow a Kraang-ish purple.

"Hmm...mmm...." April hums, thinking. Her face falls. "Nope."

"Okay..." Donatello spins the dial a little more, giving the machine a quick punch. "How about now?"

"Oh," she gasps, smiling a little as she closes her eyes. "That tingles."

"Okay, April, now...focus on the card," he orders, lifting a small card up in front of him. The silhouette of an airplane can be seen on the other side. "Close your eyes and tell me what you see."

"I see...I see..." she starts. Michelangelo pokes his head over Donatello's shoulder, watching. Her eyes open. "A bird!"

"Oh, so close," Michelangelo says. He sticks his arms out like wings. "It flies like a—"

"Ssh. You'll spoil the test," Donatello scolds as he places the old card down and gets a new one. "Try again."

She places one hand on her forehead as she thinks. Donatello and Michelangelo gaze at the card, where there's the silhouette of a monkey clearly visible.

"Hmm. I'm gonna say..." April mumbles.  Michelangelo starts imitating a monkey and Donatello elbows him sharply as April opens her eyes. "A fish?" she guesses.

"Ooo ooo ahh ahh ahh ahhh!" Michelangelo keeps hinting, leaping in place and waving his arms around.

"Mikey!" Donatello snaps.

Michelangelo stops, frowning a little as he shrugs. "Just trying to help," he mumbles.

"Well, stop...being...annoying!" Donatello retorts, getting up in his little brother's face. He turns around as he grabs a new card, chuckling. "Okay, this one's easy."

He wiggles his non-existent eyebrows upon seeing a picture of himself on the card. April scrunches her face up and presses her fingertips against her temple.

"It's...it's...a worm!" she exclaims as she straightens up, pride glittering in her blue eyes. "Definitely a worm!"

Donatello grimaces and imagines himself as a worm for a moment. April notices his look and frowns. Dr. Cluckingsworth squawks in disappointment and places a tiny wing on her enlarged forehead.

"No? Really?" April asks as Donatello slumps over. She looks at her feet, utterly confused. "But these images in my head, they feel so right!"

The farmhouse door opens with a creak as Leonardo, Destiny, Raphael, Casey, and Diaval come outside. As the door slams shut, Leonardo ditches his crutch against the front steps and walks forwards confidently.

"Come on, let's get to it. I'm feeling a lot better," he says, spinning his katanas and impaling them in the ground. "Today, I'm taking all three of you down."

"Ha! In your dreams, Leo," Raphael scoffs, grinning as he spins his sais.

Destiny chuckles, unsheathing her uchigatana and testing the weight in her hand. Diaval wanders over to the nearest tree and sits down, resting his bow at his side.

"Dude, the guy's been down for, like, ever," Casey comments to Raphael and Destiny, one hand on each of their shoulders. "Cut him some slack, okay?"

Casey and Raphael fist bump as Destiny nods. Raphael looks to Leonardo, smirking a bit. Leonardo inhales deeply, placing his hands in front of him in a small triangular formation.

"Yeah, Leo. I bet you take us all down," Raphael calls. Leonardo picks up his katanas and the red-clad turtle adds under his breath, "Casey, anyway."

The blue-masked turtle turns to them, revealing a confident smile. "Let's find out."

The trio rushes Leonardo. He grapples with Casey first, their respective weapons clashing a few times as Casey dodges his attacks and returns the blows. Leonardo spins, landing a hard kick to Casey's gut. The teen goes down with a grunt.

Just as he does that, Destiny lets out a yell and leaps at him, cutting down from the air. He blocks with his katanas, their blades clashing. She leaps back, tucking her sword back and swinging her leg up. He catches her foot in his hand, smirking lightly.

"Last time you tried that, you kicked me in the jaw," he reminds her. She can hardly smirk in reaction before he knocks her to the ground.

Raphael attacks, but Leonardo retaliates in a flash. He catches his brother's twin sais with his two katanas, being pushed back by the red-masked terrapin. Raphael lets out a yell, swinging one sai at his older brother's face. Leonardo blocks, their double sets of weapons pressing against each other as they grit their teeth. Raphael manages to fling one katana out of the blue-masked turtle's grip, spinning his sais as Leonardo adjusts his grip on his remaining sword.

They shout and leap at each other, their eyes flashing with determination as they collide in midair. Raphael touches down, one fist resting on the ground as he catches his breath. Leonardo lands immediately afterwards, his knee making a terrible snapping noise upon impact.

Again, Destiny's sensitive ears flatten against her hair as she flinches. She's next to him in a flash.

"Gah!" Leonardo moans, gripping his knee and gritting his teeth. "No, no, not again."

"Bro!" Raphael shouts.

"Leo!" Casey calls.

Destiny helps him up as he puts an arm over her shoulders, wincing. Raphael and Casey rush over, Raphael going to support Leonardo's other side as the two help the injured turtle move to the house.

"Just let me down here," Leonardo orders. They set him down on the steps and he exhales deeply, staring down at his leg. "It's hopeless."

"Aw, come on, Leo. You just need to stretch it out," Raphael says enthusiastically.

"You can still spar with us," Casey adds, nudging Destiny's shoulder as he grins hopefully.

"No!" Leonardo snaps. When he sees the hurt in their expressions, his face softens. "I mean, I'd just hold you back. You guys train. I'll...watch." He looks down, his face utterly heartbroken. "It's all I'm good for anyway."

Raphael and Casey glance at each other, then at Destiny. She doesn't take her eyes off Leonardo, her eyes swimming with sympathy. Raphael nudges Casey and the boys head off.

Destiny sits down next to Leonardo, unsheathing her claws and examining them casually. Leonardo's eye-ridges furrow.

"Des, go spar with them," he mumbles.

"And if I don't?" she asks.

He glances at her, frowning. She doesn't avert her wild green eyes from him, challenging him to try and sway her with just a look. He accepts the dare.

"I don't need you to try and comfort me. There's nothing you can do, so why don't you just leave me alone?" he snaps, his eyes angry.

Her expression twists at his harsh tone. "Leo, I just want to—"

He crosses his arms and looks away from her. "Wanting something won't fix my leg. Just go away, Destiny. You don't need to act like you care."

She opens her mouth to protest, but halts. Leonardo will keep arguing with her if she keeps trying. There's really nothing she can think of that would make him feel better, so she quickly shuts her mouth, refraining from voicing her feelings. She sniffs once as she inhales sharply, brushing her eye as she stands up.

"Fine," she says, her voice breaking as storms off towards Raphael and Casey. "Diaval! I need dodging practice!"

"Mhm," the pale boy says as he gets up and readies his bow.

Leonardo looks up, guilt flooding his heart when she doesn't spare another glance his way.
