Chapter 28
"You forgot," Rena began. "That there were two options. You don't have to be erased, but you can become a goddess alongside me. Everyone will forget about you are though." Madoka looked at Homura.
Homura's eyes were clouded with unhappiness and despair, as she stared into the air.
"You can still make a wish," Rena urged Madoka. "You can make a wish, and I will use the power of the wish to turn you into a goddess. Normally I wouldn't be able to do that, because, when turning a magical girl into a goddess, I would need a very strong power to counterbalance mine. Your potential however, makes it possible." Madoka looked around her, at the other magical girls, chatting happily, unaware of the choices she had been given. Madoka suddenly remembered something.
"Is Walpurgisnacht still in the city?" She asked Rena. Rena nodded.
"You could make a wish about Walpurgisnacht. You can make any wish."
"Then I wish, that magical girls won't ever fall into despair again, that they won't turn into witches anymore." Rena's eyes flashed, as she reached out, grasp Madoka's shoulders.
"Very well then," was all Madoka heard, as she felt something tugging at her. At her soul.
"No, Madoka!" She heard Homura scream, then she heard Rena's voice.
"Don't, Homura," it had a warning tone in it. Madoka heard Homura sob, just as she saw her soul gem appear, shining brightly.
"By making this wish," Rena remarked. "You are being the very goddess of hope. Come out, the goddess within you."
Homura could only watch in shock, as Madoka changed, her hair elongating, and her dress changing.
"Your wish defies the laws of the universe," Rena told her. "You'll have changed the whole world."
"I don't mind," Madoka replied. "I'll rewrite the laws if I have to." Her bow appeared, and the room around the three of them disappeared.
"Madoka!" Homura screamed, as she was thrown about to a different place. A violent wind threw her back, and she struggled to stay upright, every instinct telling her to let go, to just let herself be blown away.
I won't, Homura told herself, I won't let everything I have worked so hard for go to pieces. I won't, I won't, I wo- "AHHHHHHHHH!" Everything became reality once again, and she floated in space, aware of how cold and empty it was, but never feeling it, only feeling the small knot of fear in her stomach.
"Homura-chan," a voice whispered to her. Homura kept her eyes shut. She didn't want to see her anymore. She didn't want to be reminded of the mistake she had made, and how all her efforts had been in vain.
Wasted.
Like how her body had been, as her heart failed on itself. Like how she thought her life had been, before she went to school, before she met a girl called Madoka Kaname, who admired her, despite how weak she was.
Wasted.
"Homura," Madoka's voice called softly again. "I'm leaving now, I just want to say goodbye before I go." Homura felt panic seize her. She couldn't leave, she couldn't go. She just couldn't leave her.
"Don't go," Homura pleaded, immediately opening her eyes and grabbing Madoka's shoulders. "Please! Don't!" Madoka's smile was kind, like it had been, when she was just a human girl. Not a magical girl.
"You know I have to," Madoka told her gently, her hands gently removing Homura's hands from her shoulders. "No-one will remember me. It will be alright. Besides, only then will I be able to see everything you have done for me, how much pain you had to go through to help me. I'm really happy you cared for me so much. Here, take this." Homura felt something being pressed into her hands, and she looked down.
Madoka's red ribbons dangled there, the ribbons Madoka used to wear. The sight of Madoka giving them away was just another reminder to Homura that she wouldn't be a normal human girl anymore. Instead, she was a goddess, destined to be forgotten and no longer the human girl she ahd tried so hard to protect.
Homura took them anyway. She might forget about Madoka, but she wanted to at least keep the ribbons, so that maybe one day, she would remember her.
"Goodbye," Madoka said softly, with a smile that made Homura feel so guilty. "Don't forget, I'll always be there, even if you don't realise." With that she faded away, her white dress and pink hair billowing lightly in an invisible breeze.
"Thank you," a voice echoed behind Homura, and as she spun around, she saw Rena's warm, pale eyes smiling at her before they too, faded away.
Sorry for not updating for an age! I was busy, and also concentrating on my other story, Lady Vampire Knight. I ended up typing up this chapter and publishing it after being 'reminded' by a certain person *cough_Amaya_Akemi_cough* Anyway, while I was typing this chapter away, and dodging virtual muffins, I realised how far the story had gone, and that it would end very soon. So thank you to all of you who have read this, and I will consider writing a third book. It will have to be after a couple of weeks, because my exams are coming up in two or three weeks, and I'll have to study (Oh joy, =.=). Until then, have a good day (or night)!
