Chapter 26
Rena gasped suddenly. Why was she so shallow, trying to convince Madoka to contract? She should fight the witch alone.
Running off, she began leaping through the air to the figure of Walpurgisnacht in the sky.
Striking out with her whips, she caught Walpurgisnacht around the head.
Walpurgisnacht laughed, mocking laughter filling the air. As she did, Rena felt something embrace her, something that she felt was part of her.
"Uh oh," Jyuubey stared at the screen. "Looks like the energy got back to Rena." Both incubators watched on emptily, a bad feeling brewing.
Madoka watched in shock, as Rena leapt off, striking in a bright whirling pattern, at the witch. As she fought, a bright light appeared around her, slowly growing brighter, and as it did, Rena herself changed.
Her hair grew even longer, reaching her feet, as she herself, turned into a young woman, the whips disappearing, to be replaced by light, which eventually dissolved into the air. Finally she stood there, in the air, facing Walpurgisnacht.
She said nothing, but her brow creased.
"Incubators, you have tried to harness me," she said, not noticing the witch. Madoka froze there in shock. As the woman raise a hand, a small squeak pierced the air, as suddenly, a pair of incubators tumbled out of the air in front of her, closely followed by Lyubey.
She picked each one of them up by the scruff, letting them dangle from her hands.
"We were just doing out job," Kyubey informed Rena from where he was being held. "You can't blame us for that."
"I can," she replied. "You were not meant to sabotage or endanger the whole city." Kyubey's tail flicked sullenly.
"Let's see who you were trying so hard to contract with," Rena said suddenly, beginning to drift over to where Madoka was.
Madoka took an uncertain step back, wanting to run back into the centre.
"Hello," Rena smiled down at Madoka. Madoka couldn't see any recognition in her eyes. What had happened to Rena?
"Who are you?" Madoka asked Rena. "What happened to you?" Rena seemed to frown slightly.
"What- Oh!" She smiled at Madoka. "It's something you might not have to know." Madoka smiled back hesitantly.
"Let me see," Rena's hands reached towards Madoka, to cup her face. "Hmm..." She peered into Madoka's eyes thoughtfully, while Madoka stared back, transfixed.
"I see why the incubators were so keen to contract with you," Rena finally said, removing her hands. "Your magical potential is so strong, it is otherworldy. That can be a problem though." She leaned back to survey Madoka with a frown.
"How come?" Madoka asked her. "Why is it a problem?" Rena looked uncertain.
"Let's not talk here," she said. "This place is full of death and misery." She didn't mention Emiria's body lying on the ground, just metres away.
Taking Madoka's hand, Madoka felt them being transported somewhere. Glowing light enveloped them, and when she finally looked up, everyone was there in Mami's apartment. Kyoko sat at the coffee table, eating a piece of cake, Sayaka next to her, her cake untouched. Mami sat on the sofa, a familiar smile on her face, while Homura sat next to her, an unreadable expression on her face. Yuuki and Miku sat next to the window, chatting about something. Sensing Madoka watching them, the two of them loked up, with a happy smile and waved, before returning to their conversation. Emiria sat next to the two of them, not talking to anyone, just leaning against the glass, and surveying everything with a content expression.
