Chapter 14
"3 more days," Homura whispered agitatedly. In her room, where all her files, calendars and pictures hung, she paced it worriedly.
Walpurgisnacht was coming so soon, and she couldn't find any sign of any other magical girls. She was pretty sure she was the only one in Mitakihara City now.
Finally, she sat down. She wouldn't give up. If she was the only magical girl left in the city, then so be it. She would fight Walpurgisnacht, and she would make sure it would stay away. For good.
"Madoka," The high pitched voice of Kyubey sang in Madoka's head, "We need to talk."
"Huh?" The pink-haired girl looked around, "Where are you?" A silhouette appeared on the window.
"Over here."
"Oh, right!" Madoka hastily opened the window, letting the white incubator in.
"Finally!" The white cat-like creature chirped, sitting down, wrapping his tail neatly over his front paws, "There's something I have to tell you."
"Yes?" Madoka blinked at the incubator, "Is something wrong?" Kyubey flicked his ears.
"Walpurgisnacht comes in three days," He told Madoka, "I suppose Homura already told you about her?" Madoka nodded. That day at school, Homura had told her about the most powerful witch. A witch which could destroy the city. Walpurgisnacht.
"Homura-chan can fight her, right?" Madoka asked the incubator, "I mean, there are other magical girls who can also fight the witch." Kyubey shook his head.
"The other magical girls are gone," He told her, "They...disappeared for some reason." Madoka was confused.
"What do you mean disappeared?" She asked him. The white incubator shook his head.
"No-one knows why, but they're all gone, except for Homura. Walpurgisnacht is coming soon, and there is only one magical girl in the city."
"Oh," Madoka was uncertain, "Then-"
"You could make a contract," The white incubator suggested, "The potential you have will be more than enough to help Homura defeat Walpurgisnacht. In fact, you could even defeat her alone." Madoka nodded, but hesitated. Homura had emphasized how much she couldn't turn into a magical girl, and she didn't want to upset her. But if the two of them beat Walpurgisnacht...
"You can think about it," Kyubey advised, "You still have a day or so. No need to worry. The sooner you contract, the better though."
"I wish," Madoka began, "That-"
"Madoka?" Junko's dark, ruddy, purple head popped into her room, "You should be going to bed soon. It's already getting a little late."
"Yes, Mum," Madoka replied, then paused, "Mum, if I became someone completely different, would you mind?" Junko looked at Madoka in surprise.
"What are you talking about? Is it something at school?" Madoka shook her head fiercely.
"It's not that, but, if you had a friend you owed a lot to, would you change your whole life to make sure she doesn't get hurt?" Junko looked uncertain. She walked into the room, sitting down on Madoka's bed.
"Is it something to do with school? Or friends? Is it about Sayaka?" Junko's disbelief was evident in the last question. Everyone believed Sayaka was dead. Some, like Sayaka's family tried to keep hope, believing that Sayaka was still alive, just lost, or kidnapped. Maybe she had even just run away for good. No matter what, her family wouldn't accept she was dead.
Madoka sighed.
"It's nothing, nevermind. Good night." She gave her mother a kiss, before climbing into the bedsheets, her mind spinning with worry. Kyubey had disappeared as her mother entered the room. She could contract tomorrow.
Homura sat on a seat, deep in thought. The files and photos of Walpurgisnacht from previous timelines flickered and floated around the room. Walpurgisnacht was coming, no matter what. She had to stop her.
