Story:
Born in Little Italy, Peter Antonio De Luca has been a troubled child.
Ever since he was a kid, he would start fights constantly with bullies and no one would ever listen to him. Peter thought the world was against him and would do whatever he wanted to prove his point, making bullies target him even more.
One day, in his freshman year of high school, it was the last straw for Pete: he was minding his own business until a bully comes in called him a "lowlife Guinea", which transitioned into a fight. Pete had beaten the guy's face up so bad that the kid needed to go to the hospital, but Peter had gotten expelled for his actions soon after.
Outraged by his actions, Pete's parents had no choice but to sign him up for a foreign exchange program in Tokyo, where he would go for a full school year.
Before he left, Peter would have a saying in what he wanted to say about all this,
"I'm a victim of circumstances. I had to be around people who saw me differently and they would bully me out of spite. I had to fight back in order to defend myself from those guys since the principal wouldn't do anything." He said, "That's bullying, so whatever you do to me, whether it's a foreign exchange program or sending me to juvie, it will definitely be better than what those jagoffs had done to me for the past decade."
Right in that moment, Peter gave his parents a little glimpse of what bullying is all about, but they still saw him as a delinquent kid and needed to be taught a lesson.
Soon enough, Peter was sent to Tokyo in a foreign exchange program, where his parents thought he would be taught to respect others and come back disciplined, but the joke was on them because when Peter got to Japan, he's never been so happy.
Peter got to be away from the bullies that treated him like garbage, his out of touch parents thinking differently, and Pete got to be in a different country to enjoy himself.
Pete knew that the exchange program wouldn't be about having fun and having a better time, but he knew it was worth being happy after all this time.
Peter would live with a family, named the Fujitas, that would speak broken English, which was a bit of a disappointment, but he didn't think it would be a problem since the family's daughter, Yui, was willing to help him adjust to his new life, but little did she know, Peter was falling in love with her.
