Chapter 3

A few days later and Duri hadn't said a single word to him. She stayed in her room for most of the weekend with Jae leaving food at her door around meal times. Minho felt awful about how dinner went. He had told himself that he'd make an effort, but only because Jae Woo really wanted him to. He hadn't meant to hurt her feelings. He wanted to apologize, but wasn't sure what to say. As he got out of the shower and threw on his suit for the day, he decided he'd talk to Jae and see if she can do another dinner so he could at least get Duri out of her room.

When he got downstairs, Jae was making pancakes. "Good morning" she said as he walked into the kitchen.

"Can I ask you a favor?" He said leaning against the counter next to the stove. He crossed his arms across his chest while he thought for a moment about how he was going to word this.

"Sometime today, Minho, I have things to do. I'm a busy lady" She said as she flipped a pancake in the frying pan.

"I was wondering if...m-maybe you could..um...make dinner again. Make her come out of her r-room?" He looked down at the floor embarrassed. He didn't know why it made him so nervous.

"I don't know about that. She's not even talking to me." Jae Woo said pouring another pancake into the pan.

"Please? I-I just wanna apologize for the other night. I didn't mean to make her so upset." Jae finally looked up at him and smiled.

"I will try my best, but I can't make any promises. I'll text you if she agrees, ok?"

"Thank you. I know you'll do your best, Jae" He grabbed his suit jacket and his bag and left for work. He really hoped that Duri would at least let him explain himself.

Later that day Duri was mid binge watch of Crash Landing on You. She wasn't sure what else to do with her time. Leaving her room meant interacting with Minho. She wasn't sure she really wanted to do that. She didn't care what he meant at dinner, as if she wasn't already dealing with enough. It'd been three weeks and she still couldn't remember anything. No matter how long she stayed awake at night trying to force her brain to remember just one thing, it never worked. When there was a knock at the door she ignored it and pulled her duvet furhter up under her chin and stared at the TV at the end of the bed.

"Duri?" Jae Woo asked as she poked her head into the room. "I'm sorry to bother you. I made you some breakfast. Why don't you come downstairs? Minho has left for the day."

Duri panicked a bit, not sure if she wanted to leave the safety of the cacoon she'd created. She was wrapped up in so many sheets and blankets that they felt like armor.

"Sweetheart. You can't live your life in this room. You have to leave eventually." Jae Woo said calmly knowing that the girl was on edge and upset. She walked in the room slowly and sat down on the edge of her bed. She slowly put a hand on top of Duri's. "I know everything happening right now is scary for you, but he didn't mean to upset you the other night. Maybe it was my fault. I forced him to have dinner. He's just a very private person the last couple years."

"I just don't understand." She said as tears started form in her eyes. She was so tired of crying. "He hates me. How am I supposed to spend the rest of my life with a man that hates me? Why can't I get a happy ending like everyone else?" She started to cry and once she did she felt the flood gates open with the last month of frustration pouring out all at once. Jae lovingly wrapped her arms around her and let her get it all out of her system.

"He doesn't hate you, sweetheart. He just has some things he's still working through, he's had a rough couple of years. You just need to give him some time." She said as she rubbed Duri's back slowly. Duri sniffed loudly and sat back.

"I don't expect him to ever love me if he doesn't want to, but why can't we just be friends? Or even just coexist and be civil with each other? Why is he making it so difficult?"

"Well, he wanted me to invite you to dinner tonight. I think he wants to apologize for the other night. You should at least give him a chance." Jae said looking her in the eye. She paused and thought for a moment, things weren't ever going to get any better if she said no. "I guess so, but if he's a jerk again I can't promise I won't slap him"

Jae let out a loud laugh, "That's my girl" She said smoothing my hair. "Dinner's at 6, ok?"

Duri nodded and got out of bed, and finally headed downstairs for breakfast.

Later that day, Minho could smell something delicious from the garage the moment he got out of his car. Walking into the house he saw not only Jae cooking but Duri was helping her. "Minho!" Jae said excitedly as he walked in. "Go wash up, dinner's almost done." He glanced over at Duri who was stirring something in a large bowl. She peeked up at him, probably feeling him looking at her and she darted her eyes quickly back to what she was doing.

Minho went into the living room and threw his suit jacket over the back of the couch and threw his bag next to it on the floor. He'd been nervous all day trying to think of what to say. He wanted her to understand where he stood on their "relationship", but also didn't want to hurt her feelings again. "Here goes nothing." He walked back into the dining room as Duri and Jae were putting the last couple of things on the table.

He couldn't help but admit that Duri looked really pretty tonight. She had on some black jeans and a plain white t-shirt with her hair in it's natural waves around her shoulders.

What are you thinking, Minho? You can't fall for her.

"Smells good" He said sitting down. His palms were sweating and his stomach was in a knot.

"Bibimbap, Jae Woo said it was one of your favorites." Duri said sitting down across from him at the round table, before digging into her own bowl like she hadn't eaten in ages. He smirked slightly to himself as he secretly watched her eat. He tore his eyes away and started in on his own bowl of food. He figured he'd let her get a few bites down before he tried to apologize, just in case he upset her again.

"I wanted to apologize...for um...the other night." He said looking up at her. "I really didn't mean to upset you. Your question just caught me off guard, I didn't know how to answer."

"Minho." She started glancing up from her food for a moment before looking back down. "We're both stuck in this situation, and I may not be able to remember anything from before the accident, but we need to at least be civil with each other. Would it ever turn into more then that? Who knows, but maybe we could at least try to be friends?"

He paused as he swallowed. He'd always pushed everyone away for a reason. The wall he built up was wavering and he wasn't sure how he felt about it. This wasn't the same girl he knew before the accident. Sure, she dressed the same, talked the same, wore her hair the same way....but the way she looked at him was different. She smiled at him, which she'd never really done before and every time she did his heart beat just a tiny bit faster. No matter how hard he tried to suppress what he felt, it just kept coming back up every time he saw her. Right now, the way she sat across from him her hair pushed behind one ear and the way she was speaking so freely with him made him have second thoughts about pushing her away completely.

"I'd be ok with that." He said shoveling another bit of food in his mouth so he wouldn't have to say anything else. He loved the way her face softened when he answered her. She nodded her head once "Good. Friends?" She asked putting her hand out for him to shake. He reached out and slowly took her hand in his to shake on it. "Friends"

What he wasn't expecting was the shock of electricity that went up his arm when their skin touched. They'd never had any physical contact aside from the kiss on the cheek at their wedding. He felt his cheeks start to get warm and he pulled his hand back quickly looking back down at his food like it was the most interesting thing he'd ever seen.

What he didn't know was that Duri had felt it too, and her cheeks were just as flushed.
