Chapter 2
One week later and she was ready to come home, Minho had tried to put up a good show. Being the doting husband everyone expected him to be, but he could tell that Duri didn't believe it for a second. She could see right through him.
When they got to their home, Minho showed Duri to her room on the east side of their home. "We don't sleep in the same room?"
"No. You stay in your half of the house and I'll stay in mine." He said before closing her door behind him and leaving.
She looked around the unfamiliar room and threw her things onto the grayish lavendar duvet and sat down on the edge of the bed. Nothing in the room looked even remotely familiar to her. She got up and slowly started moving through the room. Gray walls, white trim, at least she remembered that lavendar was her favorite color. She ran her fingers along the desk as she slowly walked by, stopping to look at the picture frame set on top. It was herself with an older woman, her mother? They looked alike, the woman had her gray-black hair pulled back into a low bun and wore a black skirt with a white button down, finished off with simple black heels. She heard a knock on her door and quickly put the picture frame back down.
"Ahhh, my sweet Duri! You're home!" A short plump woman said as she entered the room and wrapped her arms around me.
"Do I know you?" She asked uncomfortably. The small woman stepped back and apologized.
"I'm so sorry! You don't remember me! I'm Jae Woo. I'm the house keeper...among many many other things. I've been working with the Lee family for Minho's whole life." She laughed holding both hands crossed in front of her.
"Oh." Duri said looking down at her feet. "I'm sorry"
"No no! Don't be sorry! Hopefully it'll all come back to you soon. Are you hungry? I could make you some lunch?" She asked.
"No thank you. I think I just need to take a nap to be honest. It's all a little overwhelming." She forced a smile and tried not to cry as the frustration built up in her stomach.
"Ok, well if you need anything I'm here every night until ten o'clock, except Sundays, I leave at four. Ok?" She smiled and put a hand on Duri's shoulder to comfort her.
"Thanks" Duri managed to say before the woman left the room. "Wait!" She said louder then she meant to, causing the woman to whirl around and face her.
"Um....Minho and I....we don't get along?" Duri asked, the woman's face softened and she took a few steps back into the room.
"It's been a rocky start the last couple months..." She said.
"We've only been married a couple of months?"
"Yes, Minho can appear to be cold and uncaring, but you have to get to know him. He can be a very sweet young man. He's just been through a lot and finds it hard to open up to new people." She said smiling again. Duri liked Jae Woo, she was someone she already felt like she could trust, and since she couldn't even remember her own parents that was something she desperately needed.
"Ok" Duri nodded. The woman nodded her head back and smiled warmly before leaving the room and shutting the door behind her.
She went back over to her bed and laid down, maybe sleep would help her to feel better. She crawled into the silk sheets and let sleep take over.
___
"Oh Minho! You're home." Jae Woo cooed as he came in the door. "Dinner is almost ready, why don't you go clean up and bring Duri down to eat."
"Jae, you know we don't eat dinner together." He mumbled as he threw his suit jacket over the back of a stool at the kitchen island.
"Well, maybe you should start." She suggested, "Now go" She said pointing at the staircase. Minho rolled his eyes. He couldn't argue with Jae Woo, he knew that was something he'd never win. He trudged up the stairs and knocked on the door to Duri's room and waited. He knocked again and pushed open the door.
She was in bed with her blankets pulled up to her neck her hair was splayed out against the pillow, she looked peaceful. He wasn't sure if waking her up was a good idea, but she opened her eyes before he could turn around.
"Jae Woo made dinner..." he said awkwardly, "If you're hungry."
"Ok, I'll be right down." She answered sitting up and rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Her eyes were red and puffy, he could tell she'd been crying. He knew better then to ask. Just because she couldn't remember him, didn't mean he couldn't remember her and her fiery temper when she was upset.
"A-are you....ok?" He asked unsure. Why was he even asking? Some part of him did feel bad for what she was going through, he wasn't a total monster. He just felt like keeping her at a distance would be easier for them both.
"Yep," she sniffed "Fine" she got up and walked past him heading down the stairs to the dining room as Jae Woo was just placing the last bit of food on the table.
"Wow! It smells so good down here!" She said smiling, Minho had never seen her smile like that before. Her entire face lit up and her eyes sparkled. He couldn't help but wonder if he was the reason she'd never smiled like that before.
"Japanese chicken curry, I thought I'd make one of your favorites Duri!" She said pulling out Duri's chair. "Minho, sit." She commanded.
He was uncomfortable sitting across the table from her, he was uncomfortable with this entire dinner situation in general. Jae served them both and then left the room. He knew she was up to something, and he knew exactly what it was. He excused himself from the table and walked back into the kitchen where Jae Woo was washing dishes.
"Jae, what are you doing?" He asked leaning against the island.
"Fixing your mistakes" She said without turning around.
"And what mistake are we fixing exactly?"
"That beautiful girl is scared." She started "You need to let her in, Minho. Stop pushing everyone away. Stop bringing other women home. You have a rare chance to fix your mistakes. She can't remember all the questionable things you've done in this marriage."
"Mmm, and what? I'm supposed to just fall in love with her? Live happily ever after? What happens when she wakes up and remembers everything?" He paused, "What am I supposed to do then? Go back to the way things were? What's the point." He said upset. Jae Woo turned around and looked Minho in the face.
"You'll never know if you don't try."
"No. I'm not doing this. I-"
"Minho!" She chided "You'd rather be miserable for the rest of you life? What happened to Choa wasn't your fault." She said putting her hands on his arms.
"She has nothing to do with this." He gritted out between clenched teeth.
"Minho...she has everything to do with this." Jae said quietly as she pulled him into a hug "Now, go back in there and eat your dinner." She said before turning back around and going back to the dishes. He sighed loudly and walked back into the dining room and sat in his seat. Duri looked at him confused as she averted her eyes and focused on her plate of uneaten food.
"You really don't like me at all do you?" She asked quietly as she continued pushing her food around. Even though she wasn't looking at him, he could still tell there were tears forming in eyes.
"It's not..." he paused, the last thing he wanted was for Duri to start crying, nothing made him more uncomfortable then girls when they cry. "I just..." He stopped again. "I-"
She nodded her head slowly and put her spoon down and quickly got up from the table and walked back towards the stairs. He got up quickly and stepped in front of her. "It's not you." He blurted out.
"Then what is it? Why are you so rude all the time? No wonder we don't get along. You're like a brick wall!" She yelled before running up the stairs to her room and slamming the doors shut.
"Minho! What did I just tell you?!" Jae Woo came out from the kitchen.
"I wasn't trying to be mean to her, Jae. I promise. I just....I didn't know what to say." He said sitting down on the last stair with his face in his hands. This was going to be harder then he thought. Opening up to people was hard for him. The last girl he'd opened up to....No, he can't think about that right now. Those times were dead and gone, and she wasn't coming back so he may as well try to make the best of a bad situation.
