Chapter 9: Zoey

Humming a song to myself I walked into the kitchen as I re-tied my hair. A few of the pack members were there and they all greeted me with a happy smile. I smiled and wished them a good day as I got started on my work. Two women came in and started helping on their own.

"Oh no. You don't need to do that. I can do it myself," I protested.
"Hush now dear. Let us help. You do all the work anyway," one woman said.
"By the way I am Natalie and this is Christine," Natalie introduced us.
"Zoey," I replied with a friendly smile.

The three of us started getting the drinks ready. Thanking them I took the tray and walked to the office. Before I could knock I heard a female voice inside whom I assumed belonged to the Alpha's daughter.

"I smell another she-wolf on you. What were you two doing?"

There was an edge to her voice which I didn't like. I didn't wait for the answer and just knocked on the door.

"Yes," Kade called.

His voice send shivers up and down my spine. I pushed open the door and walked inside allowing ny eyes to stay down on the carpet.

"Drinks Alpha," I said, everting my eyes from Kade.
"Place them here," Kade said, his voice strong and business-like.
"I know that scent. It belongs to this girl!"

Now her voice was angry.

"Paisley calm down!" Alpha Xander exclaimed.

So her name was Paisley. I didn't like her.

"Calm down? You are asking me to calm down daddy?" Paisley asked, her voice getting louder.
"Lower your voice Paisley," her brother said.
"Ethan shut up," she said.
"Alpha Xander this is what you caught your children?" Kade asked, hid voice was hard and Alpha-like.
"Sorry Kade. I don't know what's overcome her," Alpha Xander sighed.
"Well then we can't discuss the deal today," Kade said, standing up.

I raised my head and looked up at him. He had that impassive look on him which was hard to interpret.

"You know perfectly well what's overcome me! My own mate has been frolicking with a she-wolf doing god knows what and you are asking me to calm down!" Paisley exclaimed.

Now I understood her point somewhat. She was Kade's mate and had smelled me on him. It would be a natural reaction. I didn't blame her.

"We were just running in the forest. He's my Alpha and that's that," I gave her explanation.
"And why were you running with him?" Paisley demanded.
"Because we stumbled along our path unintentionally. He thought it would be a good idea go teach me to hunt," I said.
"See? Told you you were overreacting," Alpha Xander said.
"That still doesn't explain your scent over him," Paisley said.
"What makes Kade a good Alpha is that he's interractive with the people of his pack. I recently got hurt on my side by a member on accident and he wanted to make sure I was all right since I was healing slowly," I explained.

What more lies have you got?" Kade's voice spoke in my mind.
"These are not lies!" I huffed.
"Yeah yeah," he said back.

"See? You are reading too much into what's nothing," Ethan said.
"Can we get back to business?" Alpha Xander asked.
"Only if your kids willbehsve themselves around my pack members," Kade huffed.

I saw him looking at Paisley as he emphasized the word kids.

"I assure you they will," Alpha Xander said.
"Will you be having lunch with us Alpha?" I asked.
"Well this is my pack now. We can do whatever we please," Paisley huffed.
"PAISLEY! Of course dear," Alpha Xander told me with a warm smile.

I bowed and left the room with a relieved sigh. Well atleast somebody found their mate. My thoughts turnrd to Julia. She has been the closest friend I had in my life. Should I tell her? But I knew it wasn't my place to tell her. It was their family business. I didn't want to be nosy. Especially when Kade's mate got the wrong impression of me. I needed to set that record straight.

I started humming to myself ss I set about working in the kitchen. For today I decided to make a simple yet delicious lunch which basically consisted of vegetables, chicken along with salad and desert. A hand grabbed my arm making me jump in fright.

"You are in a habit of scaring me aren't you?" I asked, when I saw that it was Kade.
"Are you happy?" Kade asked.
"Huh?" I asked.

I didn't actually get what he meant.

"I found my mate," Kade said.
"That's cool. You need a mate to run a pack you know," I said, not knowing where this was going.
"I haven't accepted her yet," he said.
"You should," I said.
"Even if she has an attitude?" He asked.
"Mates don't come at every corner. You should be lucky you even have a mate," I said.

I wasn't against rejecting one's mate. I didn't even know if I even had a mate out there. I found it extremely blessing to have a mate.

"Or perhaps I don't," Kade said.
"You shouldn't think so negatively," I chided him.
"Well let's see what happens," he said.

With that Kade turned around and left me alone in the kitchen. He wasn't as bad as people made him out to be. Sure he was an Alpha but that didn't meant that he was ruthless. He was a real softy but I guess that since you had to keep a law and order in place then you got to be strict to your rules.

As lunch was in it's finishing touches everybody came coming in. I was greeted by several pack members which also included Vincent and Jackson the two guys who made me go with them on Kade's order. Vincent was a bit closed off than Jackson. After setting the table I walked to the office and knocked.

"Yes," Kade said.
"Lunch is ready," I said.
"Coming," Kade said.

When I walked back to the kitchen nobody was eating yet which I had found a bit odd when I first started cooking. Then I realized that they were waiting for their Alpha to have the first piece and found it to be a pack unity. When Kade entered with Alpha Xander and his kids in tow; the pack members present rose up on their feet.

"We didn't knew there were going to be guests Alpha," a member said.

They all started moving leaving seats at the head of the table for Kade and Alpha Xander's family.

"Thank you," Kade said.

He took the head seat with Alpha Xander beside him on the left and Paisley on his right with Ethan next to Paisley.

"Come sit," Kade said, looking at me.

I felt extremely uncomfortable as everybody's gaze landed on me. I hated to be the center of attention. It made me feel vulberable somehow. I knew I wasn't in a position to say no or have an argument. Not in front of the guests anyway.

"Of course Alpha," I said finally, nodding.
"Why are you asking her to sit with us?" Paisley asked.

I gave an inward sigh as I saw Kade's body go rigid.

"Because she's as much of a pack member as anyone else," Kade said.
"Well she's only an omega," Paisley huffed.
"She's not an omega."

That sentence was not spoken by Kade but a pack member by the name of Isaac.

"Well then why did she cook?" Paisley asked.
"I like working instead of sitting idly all day," I spoke.

I didn't want Kade to get into an argument with his mate because of me. I could handle my own arguments. At least I would like to think so.

"I like people who are not lazy," Alpha Xander said.
"If that doesn't make you an omega then what does?"Paisley scoffed.
"That's enough Paisley. You have stirred up enough trouble. Let's have lunch peacefully so we can leave," Alpha Xander said.

I sat at the end of the table with a woman twice my age and we started lunch with no more incidents. Just as Alpha Xander was leaving Paisley turned to me.

"Don't get near my mate. You won't like the consequences."

Before I could reply she left me and slammed the door shut with a bang. Oh well. There goes my first impression on Kade's mate.
