❤︎ |3| A Gathering

After her short shower, Andréa and Newt headed over to the meeting hut. Andréa felt anxious and she tried to keep calm and not think too much into her current problem.

But everyone here would know. They would know that she has to get pregnant by the end of the month.

Newt noticed the distress on her face and reached for her hand in a comforting gesture. Surprised, Andréa let out a small gasp and looked down at their hands before looking back up at Newt.

"Everything will be just fine. We have your back," he said referring to Alby, Minho, and himself.

Andréa nodded slightly. "I know," she said quietly.

Andréa held onto his his hand a little tighter upon entering the room filled with teenage boys. Some talked amongst themselves waiting for Alby to start while other just looked around the hut and stayed to themselves. Newt led her to the middle of the room where Alby stood and eventually let go of her hand when she was safely tucked between him and their leader.

"Alright. Everyone listen up!" Alby started, gaining every single Gladers attention. Everyone looked between the three in confusion before looking back at Alby who started talking. "I have called this Glader meeting because we have something that needs to be addressed." He looked down at his right where the girl stood, jaw clenched in anger at the Creators. He faced his audience again, clearing his face of emotion. "Andréa was sent here to fulfill a mission the Creators gave her. And if she doesn't succeed in her task, the door will not close, we get no more supplies, and she will be the last greenie." Some boys started to talk in panic but Alby didn't like the interruption. "Slim it!" He yelled causing the murmuring to come to an abrupt halt. "She is not to be touched unless she allows you too. I want that to be clear to all of you shanks. If you have any concerns regarding her then come to me or Newt. Gathering dismissed."

Before any Gladers could get far a boy with high eyebrows and dirty blonde hair spoke up. "Why don't you tell them Alby? There's no harm in them knowing."

"She is not comfortable enough, Gally." Alby explained calmly. "And if I find out you let anyone know without her permission then there will be a punishment awaiting."

Andréa was silently happy that Alby decided to not tell everyone and let her choose who knows. She knew eventually everyone would know but she rather it be later rather than now.

Gally walked out in a huff while some followed him and others started to throw questions at the trio in the center of the room.

      "Let's go."

Andréa nodded her head and quickly followed Newt out the room. Fry and Chuck escaped the crowd as well and went to the kitchens to get food.

"Can I know what this secret is?" Chuck asked innocently. "I won't tell. I promise."

"Not now Chuckie. She'll tell you when she's ready." Newt assured the younger boy.

    Chuck pouted. "Fine."

Upon entering the food area Fry threw on an apron and started to hand them their plates.

"Bacon lettuce and tomato sandwiches." Fry announced. "Go on and take it before the rest of the boys get here. I'm sure you want to be alone for a bit."

"Thanks, Fry." She smiled, taking a plate and a sandwich along with Newt.

The brunette girl just walked to where she felt would be peaceful for her which turned out to be the treehouse. Newt quietly followed behind with his own food and the quickly got settled in at the very top.

Andréa sat crisscross eating her food silently as Newt watched her expression change every time she thought about something.

      "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I'm just relieved he decided not to tell them. And I'm just thinking about everything."

Newt smiled slightly. "They will know eventually."

"Well eventually is gonna have to wait." She laughed slightly.

"What job do you want to try?" Newt asked from his spot on the treehouse. "It doesn't have to be permanent."

"How about a Gardener? Slaughtering and anything involving that is not my thing." She admitted. "I don't know about building. Cooking doesn't sound all that bad either."

"We can start you off with Gardening," Newt said. "And I'll be there to help. I sometimes help with the Gardens since very little of the boys like the job."

"Well I'm ready. So let's go." She sat up and started down the steps.

Newt gave her some dirty gloves that seemed like they would fit and she gave him a look. Newt laughed at her face and shrugged as he grabbed a hoe. "It's the smallest pair." She huffed and slipped the gloves on. "I'll dig up the dirt and weeds and you grab the weeds and throw them into that wheelbarrow. Clear?" He asked.

"Crystal." She saluted teasingly. He rolled his brown eyes playfully

"This is boring. Very very ver-"

The brunette girl was cut off when dirt landed on her. She gaped at her sweaty and now dirty clothes before looking at a smirking Newt who was now leaning against his gardening hoe.

"Heyyyy! The dirt is sticking to me!" She complained while wiping herself off.

Newt laughed until he got smacked in the face with a pair of dirty gloves. He quickly sobered up and grabbed some dirt to throw at her but she ducked. She laughed and scooped up some dirt while hiding behind a wheelbarrow. She popped up and threw some dirt before going behind some archways that had plants growing on them. She peeked around to see where Newt was but was quickly surprised when dirt was thrown into her hair from behind.

"So much for that shower." She muttered before looking behind her to see Newt grinning. She raised her hands in surrender. "I forfeit. No more. I need another shower."

Newt helped her put the gardening stuff away and he stood guard as she showered. He didn't trust the boys enough to leave her alone and she trusted him to watch out for her when she's most vulnerable.

After dinner, the Greenie bonfire started and Fry handed out some strong liquid that was labeled as drinkable.

Andréa, Newt, and Minho all day around the fire that some of the Keepers started earlier when Chuck walked up to them and sat down newt to Andréa. "Andréa deary how are you?" He asked in a grandma sounding voice which weirded her out.

"Chuck are you okay? You sound funny."

"I positively don't know what you're talking about," he said as he sipped some of his drink with his pinky out.

Andréa furrowed her brows and looked to Minho and Newt who both were grinning at the little boy in amusement. "Is there something wrong with him?"

"What are you talkin' about there mate? You done knocked some screws loose in that pretty little head of yours?"

Andréa gaped at him before shaking her head in amusement. "I think it's you who has a few screws loose."

"I reckon I have no idear what yur talkin' about."

"Now you are just messing with me."

"Okay yeah." He admitted going back to his regular voice. "I was just messing with you. I have no other styles of speaking anyway."

"He annoys some of the boys with the accents. It comes in handy when they are annoying." Newt cut in.

"Especially Gally. He doesn't like me much."

"He doesn't seem to like anyone much," Andréa said as she glanced in the direction the Builders.

"Not 'seems'," Minho said. "He definitely doesn't like anyone much."

Staring up at what little sky she could see from her hammock she tried counting them. She heard someone shift in their hammock and looked over to see Alby still awake.

"Can't sleep Mr. Leader?" She asked jokingly. She could see the whites off his eyes in the darkness and knew he was facing her.

"Sometimes I get nightmares and I can't fall asleep."

Andréa's playful demeanor changed and she pursed her lips for a moment. "Oh... I'm sorry."

"No need. I eventually fall asleep. Which is what you should be doing." He told her before shifting to the other side, his back now facing her. "Go to sleep kid. Tomorrow is a full days job."
