|13| Dangerous Waters

A week had passed with Andréa asleep, Alby in a coma/sleep, and Thomas and Newt stopped by a million times a day to check up on them. Alby was restrained and placed in a different area as no one stung had been like this before.

While Andréa looked peaceful her mind was anything but.

"He goes up Andréa. I don't think you understand how little it matters what he means to you."

"I will never do anything for you again if you force him up." Andréa fought back from the people holding her.

The woman looked at her coldly. "You once agreed this would help us all. What's changed? Your little boyfriend leaving your side? Did the others not matter?"

"Fuck you!" She yelled making a dash for her but someone tasered her before she could.

"Take her to a cell. If she doesn't start to comply, she'll just have to join them once we start our next phase."

"Mom-"

"I don't want to hear from you. Go get some lunch. You have a lot of work to do."

The girl bowed her head and walked out with her fists clenched.

The dreams were hazy and everyone talking had a slow pace when talking. She knew they had to be memories. It just hurt to think about them causing her to wince every time her brain tried to remember anything past what was being shown to her.

"I'll forget everything..." Andréa told someone outside her cell. "They're gonna make me do things..."

"Be grateful she's letting you go to Newts glade," The blonde girl said.

"I'd rather they just kill me," Andrea muttered to herself.

The next thing Andréa knows is she is surrounded by darkness. She felt cold all of a sudden and clutched her throat like she couldn't breathe.

Outside of her mind Jeff the Med jack rushed to Andréa as she started seizing. Her body was covered in a cold sweat and she wasn't breathing. He called out to Clint and told him what was happening.

Clint grabbed a vial and needle while Jeff turned her on her side. Her poked her in the back of her neck and shot the medicine through. He held his breath as he waited and within a second she stopped jerking around and her breathing returned to normal.

"Watch her. I'm gonna go get Newt. If that happens again which it shouldn't, give her another dose. It just puts her brain to rest."

Newt sat with her the rest of the day. He just about had a heart attack when they told him what happened. She seemed to rest better after. But still, he wasn't sure when she'd wake up and he wanted to make sure it didn't happen again. He laid his head down on the bed while he held her hand.

The boy felt so stuck and claustrophobic. He just wanted to run away but there was nowhere to go and he didn't want to leave her side until she woke.

"N-"

He heard her before she moved. His head shot up and he clutched her hand tighter. "It's okay. Take a minute. Here's some water."

He gave her a cup and she drank it greedily. She cleared her throat and drank a little more. "What happened?"

"You fainted. And then you had a seizure."

"I feel like I have been ran over."

"We don't really know what happened. But you seemed like you were just sleeping and dreaming."

She nodded and rubbed her eyes. She could only recall seeing the memories over the week but she didn't remember what they meant or what happened. She groaned in frustration. It felt like someone was playing with her head and it made her feel crazy.

"What happened with the griever and Thomas?"

"Well, we ended up putting him in jail for a few days with no food the first day. But we've decided you two could be Runners if you wanted. He decided he wanted to so it's up to you if you want."

"I bet Gally's mad." She smiled. "Can you help me up? I need to walk."

"He is," he said as he helped the girl up. "But we've never been so close to possibly getting out. So that shank can deal with it."

He offered his arm and she looped it with his. He led her out and immediately the sun hit her skin. It was a good feeling for once.

"What about Alby?"

"He's been in a coma. We don't know what's going on with him. It's weird. There's periods where he'll be panting and tensing up but then he'll just go out again."

"Hmm." She furrowed her brows in wonder. "That is weird." Without warning the alarm for the box blared out, it was the sound for the greenie. "Didn't you say I was only out a week?"

Newt looked confused as well. "Yes. Come on." He took her to the box and waited as the other boys ran as well.

As soon as the box stopped. Newt and Gally opened the gates and Newt jumped in.

"It's a girl." He looked up at them.

"Another?" Andréa asked.

"She looks dead." One of the boys pointed out.

"What's in her hand?" Gally asked.

Newt bent down and picked the paper up and unfurled it. "She's the last one EVER." He read aloud for everyone. "What the hell does that mean?" He looked to Andréa but they were all confused.

Just then the girl with black hair and pale skin gasped and panted. "Thomas." She breathed out. Her eyes were unfocused yet still searching the crowd. "Andr-" she could barely get the name out as her breathing slowed down and she passed out.

The boys all looked between the two. But neither of them knew what was going on.

"Do yall still think I'm overreacting?" Gally asked the group.

Clint and Jeff had taken the girl to the Med-jack hut where they could observe her. The boys and Andréa all stayed out for a while and got something to eat so Andréa could gain more strength back before they went to see what was going on with the new girl.

"Jeff, what's going on? What's the matter with her?" Newt asked. "Why won't she wake up?"

"Hey man, I got my job the same way you do."

Thomas stared intently at her causing Newt to ask him if he recognized her. He had said no but Andréa could tell something of her was familiar and if Thomas was a part of this then he would as well.

"Really? Because she seemed to recognize you."

"Well, we had a different life at some point. Maybe she knows more than us?" Andréa suggested.

"What about the note?" Thomas asked.

Newt looked at him. "We will worry about the note later."

"I think we should worry about it now." Thomas urged.

"We've got enough to deal with at the moment. The creators want something from us, they can hold on."

"He is right Newt, if the box isn't coming back up, how long do you think we can last?" Jeff asked.

Andréa reached for his hand knowing he was being overwhelmed.

"No one said that. Let's not jump to conclusions. It only said she's the last not that resources aren't gonna be sent up."

"The only thing we can do is wait till she wakes up and see what she knows." Andréa offered. "She obviously knows a little more than any of us have waking up here."

"Can I uh, talk to you for a moment Andréa?" Thomas asked her at lunch.

"Sure." She walked with him eating an apple.

"When you were asleep Minho showed me this room with a map of the whole maze."

"They aren't still mapping it?"

"That's what I thought but no. Minho said he's traced every pattern and section. That metal thing? It goes to a section that that griever had belonged to. Tonight is the night that one opens again. Would you want to go?"

"Woah." She swallowed her bite. "Uh yeah. So you think we're close to getting out then? If that goes to a section that opens?"

"Perhaps. That's what we're gonna see."

"I have one more thing I've wanted to ask."

"Yeah go ahead," Thomas said.

"Have you... had dreams from your past?"

"Kind of. Do you?"

"Yeah, but when I wake I can't remember them. I have a bad feeling the 3 of us are special to the creators somehow. So watch your back, Thomas. As you've seen Gally is ready to take you down. And I'm not too far behind you."

"That's weird. I can remember bits and pieces of-"

Two boys ran after us panting, "Sorry. It's just the girl."

Thomas and Andréa share a look before she asks, "Is she awake?"

"You can say that," Jeff said before motioning them to follow him.

They ran toward the middle of the glade and saw Chuck laughing.

"What's going on Chuck?" Thomas asked him.

"Girls are awesome!" He pointed up toward the tree post.

Rocks could be heard falling before they heard a girl yell, "Leave me alone!"

"Hey!" Gally yelled up at her. "Throw one more of those things and I'll-" he was interrupted when she hit him in the head with another rock"

"Go away!" She told them.

   "What happened?" Frypan asked.

Winston lifted the wood he was using to help cover his friends as Newt said, "I don't think she likes us very much."

"Leave me alone! I'm warning you!"

"Where the hell did she get all these rocks?" Andréa asked as they joined the group.

"We just want to talk!" Thomas yelled.

"It's Andréa! I'm a girl! You kind of said my name!" She stopped throwing the rocks and then they saw her face over the edge looking down. "Is it okay if Thomas and I come up?"

The girl moved back and Andréa took that as a silent okay.

Gally was going to move with them but they paused and told the group they'll just go up and report back after -hopefully- calming her down.

"Alright, we are coming up!" Andréa let her know as she started climbing up. Andréa moved the hatch and was immediately greeted with a machete. "Woah. It's okay. I just came to help."

Without setting it down she asks, "Where am I? What is this place? Why can't I remember anything?"

Andréa slowly scooted up to sit across from her while Thomas followed in after. Sitting on the hatch so as to not scare the girl.

"This is all normal we have all been through this your name should come to you soon," Thomas told her.

"Teresa." She half spoke- half mumbled.

   "That's your name?" Andréa asked.

"Yes." She nodded looking at both of them.

"Well Teresa I'm Andréa and this is Thomas but you already knew that though..." Andréa slowly put my arm out to her weapon to show it was gonna be okay and she didn't need to use it.

"They said I kept saying your names in my sleep... who are you?"

"We don't know we can't remember, none of us here can remember anything we all woke up here just like you did," Thomas promised her. "I was the last one. She was the one before me."

"We're just here to help you. We are all in the same boat. Especially the 3 of us. Okay?" Andréa smiled a little to seem friendly. "Can I take this?" She reached slowly to the machete and Teresa let it go without fuss.

Impatiently it seemed, Gally yelled, "What's going on up there?!"

Andréa and Thomas stood up to look down at them.

"Is she coming down?!" Newt asked this time.

Thomas looked at Andréa before looking at Teresa who was still a little shaken. He looked back at Andréa and shook his head.

"Listen just give us a second. We'll be down as soon as she's comfortable." Andréa told Newt.

Newt said something to them and then they walked away.

"She is the last one...what does that mean?" Teresa asked.

"You may be the last person to be sent up. Why? We don't really know. But the box hasn't lowered since we got you out and the boys are a little worried."

    "Especially Gally," Thomas said.

"He thinks it's my fault?" Teresa asked.

"Are you sure you don't remember anything else?" Andréa asked.

The girl thought for a moment. "I remember water feeling like I was drowning, these faces staring at me and this voice- this woman's voice saying the same thing over and over."

"WCKD is good," Thomas said.

Andréa gasped. "I remember that." She tried to collect her memories but she could only remember that that was something she's heard before. Probably more than anything else. "Barely. But it's familiar. Like it's been drilled in my head."

Thomas looked between the two girls contemplating. "I remember being told that. In a room filled with gadgets and the last time you were there, you said everything was going to change." He told Teresa.

The girl scrunched her brows together not knowing what she meant by that. "What does that mean?"

"I don't know. I wake up to a foggy memory of any pieces I get." Andréa told them.

Thomas spoke up "I don't think we will be getting anything more than just pieces. But they've done something to us. These people. We are the only ones to remember," he looked at Andréa, "Anything about who we were before this,"

"The others don't remember anything?" Teresa seemed more confused than before if that was possible.

Andréa shook her head and looked out to the sky. "No... Why are we different?"

Teresa set her hands on her lap and remembered something was placed in her pockets. In there she pulled out tubes with some blue liquid.

"These were in my pocket when I came up," she told them.

Thomas grabbed it and Andréa looked it over with him. "WCKD. It has the same thing as the griever and the name in our memories..." Thomas thought aloud.

"What if we were sent here for a reason?" Teresa asked. "What if we have memories for a reason?"

"Alby." Andréas eyes widened as she realized it looked like a needle was needed to extract the liquid and if Teresa was sent here after Alby wasn't waking up so maybe it was for him.

   A cure.
