|11| Follow The Leader
"Wicked is good."
The little girl stared up almost mindlessly. Slowly she nodded.
"You ready?"
"Yes m-"
"Andréa?" She felt a warm hand caress her arm. "We got to get to work."
She groaned and turned over. "Already?"
"Yes, my love. Told you we shouldn't have stayed up late last night."
She pushed him away and got up to get ready. "Yeah, whatever. Just trying to save all of us."

"Why would Alby go into the maze?" Thomas asked as he sat on a log with Chuck. "I mean, he's not a runner."
"Things are different now," Newt told him. "Alby went to retrace Ben's footsteps before sundown."
"Thomas, are you gonna help?" Andréa asked with a huff as she paused her chopping at the wood.
Thomas squinted as his mind raced with thoughts. "So he's gonna go back to where Ben was just stung..."
Newt looked at Thomas with a deadpan look. "Alby knows what he's doing... all right? He knows better than any of us."
"What does that mean?"
"It's like you have heard, yeah?" he points his machete toward the box. "Every month, the Box sends up a new arrival. But someone had to be first, right? Someone had to have spent a whole month in the Glade, alone. That was Alby." Newt turned back to the tree and started hitting again. "I mean, it can't have been easy. But when those other boys started coming up, one after the other... he saw the truth. And he learned that the most important thing... is that we all have each other. Because we're all in this together."
Andréa looked at Newt noticing he was getting worked up. Then she looked at Thomas who was still fiddling with his knife.
"And what's she doing here? Everyone else," Thomas motioned around him. "Are boys."
"All we know is they want something specific from us," Andréa told him. "Now they sent us you and so we don't really know the plan here. Just don't worry your head too much about it."
He nodded his head before looking at the ground for a moment. He shoved his knife into the log and got up to take over for Andréa.
"Thank you."

Clouds covered the sky casting a dark shadow over the glade. Newt had called people in as the rain came down. They all huddled under the forts and trees, talking, resting, and some- waiting impatiently for Alby to make it back as it was getting later.
"They should be back by now," Andréa said in between biting her nails anxiously. She looked up at Newt from the box she was sitting on.
"What happens if they don't make it?" Thomas asked looking back at Newt.
"They're gonna make it," Newt said stubbornly.
Andréa knew he didn't know for sure but he didn't want to believe otherwise. Her stomach turned and her leg started an uncontrollable bounce.
"What happens if they don't?" Thomas asked moving closer.
"They're gonna make it," Newt repeated.
Thomas moved away and Newt looked to Andréa holding out his hand noticing her rapid movements.
"I don't feel so good," Andréa whispered to him.
He kneeled down and squeezed her hand. "Just breathe."

The rain had subsided and the group all surrounded around the opening of the maze where Alby should be heading out of.
"Come on, guys, can't we send someone after them?" Thomas asked.
"That's against the rules," Gally answered. "Either they make it back or they don't."
"We can't risk losing anyone else," Newt explained.
Andrea clutched onto Newt's arm as she stared into the maze.
Wind blew debris at them causing them to block their eyes before the maze doors started to close.
"Oh, no," Chuck said.
"There!" Thomas shouted catching a glimpse of Minho as he rounded the corner.
Newt saw Minho lugging Alby on his back. "Wait, something's wrong."
"Come on, Minho, you can do it!" Chuck shouted.
Andrew glanced at the little boy before looking back up at Minho worriedly. "Come on!" She shouted.
The boys started yelling encouragement but Andréa could tell they wouldn't make it. They were too far back.
The noise drowned out as her stomach fell to her ass.
"They're not gonna make it," Newt told her, clutching her hand.
Minho yelled out, dragging Alby by the foot as the doors got closer.
In a swift, not thought-through moment, Thomas lurched forward and ran through the doors.
Andréa gasped, air caught in her throat. She looked at the doors before rushing in after Thomas. Newt reached out and watched in horror as she almost got crushed before the doors closed.
"Andréa!" Newt slammed his fist on the doors. "Andréa!"
She could hear him faintly as she fell to the ground to catch her breath.
"Good job you just killed yourselves." Minho chastised them, sitting down out of breath. "If you think you were brave you're the most shuckiest shucked face shucks I ever met."
"We came in to help you." Andrea defended herself. She wanted to say she couldn't let Thomas go into danger by himself but she didn't understand why she felt that way, she just knew she had to be with him.
"Fat lot of help that'll be." Minho glanced at Thomas who was looking between them and Alby before looking at Andréa. "Andréa did you even think about Newt? What if you're pregnant?"
"Hold up... what?" Thomas asked.
"No. Okay. And I'm not that's what the test said. But I wasn't gonna leave you all in here to die. There's still a chance."
Minho shook his head. "You better hope so. Newts not gonna be happy."
"I'm so confused," Thomas said.
"The thing I was sent here to do? It was to give the creators a baby or they'd kill us all."
That seemed to strike a chord in Thomas as he stared at the floor disoriented. He rubbed at his eyes and shook his head.
The group could hear faint movements and roars in the distance and they knew they were in trouble now.
Andréa got up and offered her hand to Minho.
"What happened to him?" Thomas asked looking at Alby.
"What's it look like? He got stung." He muttered bitterly as he helped Thomas get Alby up.
"What happened to his head?" Thomas asked again.
"I did what I had to do."
"Well come on boys we have to get him moving. Minho I'll help Thomas you defend us until we can find somewhere to hide him." He looked reluctant before she gave him a look and he nodded passing Alby off to her.
