38: Tag Along
The sky was bright with two gems riding the sky's. Steven, on Lapis' back, was pointing out potential homes for Lapis, while Labradorite just silently tagged along, observing how comfortable Lapis was with Steven. It kind of reminded her of herself and Peridot. Just a little however!
"So how about this? You could live on the country side. No noise, no rules, and it'd just be you becomeing one with nature." Steven said a Lapis dived down into the trees, making Labradorite follow into the fall trees.
"Why would I want to do that?" Lapis asked, looking at the boy in confusion. "It's fun!" Steven responded with a bright smile.
"If you lived in these trees you could build a giant birds nest and have squirrles for pets, you could eat acorn pie everynight and when it get hot or it rains, you can be protected by these nice leaves." Steven explained, looking up at the mostly green and orange leaves, prompting Lapis and Labradorite to fly up out of the trees.
Steven coughed and grabbed a leaf from his mouth. Steven gasped and showed Lapis the leaf with an excited,"Lapis look at this!"
"This leaf turned orange, that means the seasons are changing from summer to fall!" Steven happily explained as Lapis looked back at the trees noticing that some of the tree's leaves were orange.
"Soon it's gonna happen to all the leaves on all the trees." Labradorite watched as Lapis' eyes twinkled at the thought, murmuring a "wow..." Whilst she looked. "So, what do you think?" Steven asked, leaning on Lapis' head. "Oh, I'm not sure.." Lapis spoke averting eye contact with the boy. "That's okay, there's plenty of places we haven't been yet. Come on." Steven says gesturing Lapis forward.
<----->
Night had came rather quickly fir the sky-born gems, looking for a home for Lapis was definitely taking longer then it should have, but now Labradorite has plenty of information to make Lapis comfortable once she visits.
Now they made their was to a basically glowing city. "What's this?" Lapis asked as she admired the bright city from above. "This must be empire city! Isn't it cool?" Steven asked with a smile. "It's very... bright." Lapis comments.
"Yeah, that's why they say, what happens in Empire city ever sleeps!" Steven quotes, making the two water gems look at him. "So what does happen in Empire city?" Lapis asked, making Steven smile again.
"Well, let's see." That was Lapis' and Labradorite's queue to dive down into the city. Dozens of cars lit up the streets, honking at each other making a lot of noise, Labradorite definitely couldn't imagine herself living, or even staying here.
"If you lived here, you could get a cool apartment and be a single gem taking on the big city, you'd have a fun job at a coffee shop and come home to a waky roommate." Steven says happily. "I have no idea what you're talking about." Lapis admitted truthfully, giving Steven a side eye, making him mutter a "aw."
"Hey! What's that shadowy place over there?" Lapis pointed out, making Labradorite look to where Lapis was looking. What a keen eye, Labradorite thought. "Oh, that's Jersey." Steven says with much less enthusiasm than earlier.
"Is it populated by machines?" Lapis asked as they flew over to Jersey, the noise of cars and the smell of smoke were definitely prominent here. "No those are cars, they nake alot of smoke though." Steven coughs at the smoke.
"You'd like it in Jersey, the people here seem to hate the earth too." Steven said. a person in the distance yelled "Quit flying in our sky, ya motes!" Before throwing something at the trio. Lapis blew raspberries at the man and the two burst out laughing before flying away.
Labradorite, who caught the item, threw the rock back down to earth, effectively hitting the man who threw it before flying away back to the two that flew into the clouds. Labradorite flew into the clouds and placed her feet on the clouds, creating the illusion of standing on clouds.
Labradorite giggled at her antics and followed the now silent duo. "Wow, Lapis, it's so beautiful up here." Steven said, looking up at the cloudless sky. "Eh. It's alright. I guess, I can see why you like it." Lapis spoke, looking up at Steven.
Steven smiled softly. "Hold on." Lapis suddenly said before speeding off, making Labradorite race after them, she would hate getting lost now.
Lapis flipped upside down, making Steven fly off Lapis' back before Lapis caught his hands yelling a "check it out!" Happily, making Steven cheer.
"Hey! We made it out all the way over the ocean!" Steven smiled, looking down at the bits of the ocean through the clouds. "I wonder how far out we are." Steven wondered as Lapis laughed. Suddenly the trio caught a glimpse of the galaxy warp. Both of the blue gems faced fell as both of them recounted bad memories from the place. "Oh cool the galaxy warp!" Steven pointed out with a smile.
Lapis, caught up in her thoughts, losses her grip slightly on Steven's hands. "Uh, Lapis? I'm slipping a little there, bud." Steven said, Lapis didn't seem to here him, but Labradorite sure did.
Labradorite looked over at Lapis, calling her name as Steven yelled her name due to the fear of getting dropped by Lapis' ever slipping grip.
"Lapis! Lapis, I'm slipping! I'm gonna-!" Lapis finally regained her grip on Steven's wrists. "Uh, Sorry! I'm sorry." Lapis apologies, averting her eyes from Steven. Lapis lands on the galaxy warp, letting Steven go and walking over to the main warp in the center.
"This is where I was abandoned." Lapis spoke as Labradorite stood off to the side, watching as Steven walked up to Lapis.
"What happened?" Steven asked. Water rises from the ocean, pooling around the floor of the galaxy warp. Lapis walked up the steps to the main warp, Labradorite and Steven followed as water covered the surface of the warp, reflecting similar to a mirror.
"It's like a mirror..." Steven comments before getting interrupted by Lapis, her eyes now glossed over without any pupils. "It was thousands of years ago." The surface water showed Lapis, on the Earth, presumably thousands of years ago, her back facing the surface.
"I was only meant to visit for a short time, but I got caught." The setting changed from a beautiful setting. "In the middle of a war." To a hazardous war zone, soldiers of all kinds destabilizing left and right with Lapis right in the middle of the chaos.
"It was awful." A soldier, reminiscent of a Bismuth came up behind her. "I tried to run but..." the Bismuth punched her in her back, right where her gem was, not crackng it however, just poofing her, leaving her gem alone.
"I was picked up by a homeworld soldier and confused for a crystal gem." A hand picked up her gem and placed her in the back of a mirror. "And used as a tool." The mirror turned to it's reflective side, facing many other homeworld gems.
"They'd ask me 'show us your base' 'where is your leader?' I didn't know and I couldn't say 'I'm not one of them'." The homeworld gems dissipated.
"It soon became clear that there was no hope in stopping the rebellion." Depictions of warps activating was shown. "All the homeworld gems fled. In all the panic of escaping earth, I was left behind."
The mirror dropped face down and was stepped on, cracking on impact. "And there I stayed. Freedom in my sight, but out of reach for ages." Pearl appeared, in a different outfit looking down at the surface and grabbing it. "Until I was found."
Lapis collapsed, letting the water dissipate from her grasped and into the ocean once more. Steven was immediately by her aid. "Are you okay?" He asked, Lapis brushed off the question with an "I'll be fine." Before sighing. "Let me take you back." Lapis said. "Are you sure you don't want to take a minute?" Steven asked, his eyes full of worry. "It's fine. I just want to get out of here." Lapis smiled, Steven smiled back with a small "okay."
Lapis summoned her wings, letting Steven hop on her back and flew away, Labradorite following closely behind. Most of the ride back was silent, no longer filled with banter and small giggles.
"For a moment, I really felt like things were different. But they're not." Lapis says, breaking the silence only bearly. "No matter where I go I'm trapped." Lapis says. "But you're not. You're not underwater, you're not in a mirror. This time you're free!" Steven says
"but I'm still on earth." Lapis responded finally turning to Steven. "Yeah, but nothing is still on Earth. Everything's always changing." Steven told before listing examples. "The Leaves, the cities, even Jersey changes." Steven lists before continuing his talk.
"My dad says the rest stops used to be pretty gross, but now they have sushi! This isn't the same world that held you prisoner, not anymore, and I know it doesn't feel like home. But maybe that can change, too." Steven said gleefully to Lapis, making the blue gem smile.
<----->
Finally, the three gems made it to the barn, Lapis put Steven down on the ground and Labradorite immediately went to find Peridot in the barn as Steven gave Lapis a Ted talk.
"I know you can't go back to Homeworld, but if you stay here." Steven reached into his pocket and handed Lapis a leaf. "It'll be your choice to stay here." Steven says as Lapis takes the leaf from Steven's hands. "It's funny." Lapis says "for all the time I've spent on Earth, I bearly saw any of it." Lapis spoke, making Steven frown.
"It's not funny. That's super sad." Steven frowned. Lapis looked over to the breeze and the rising sun. "I...I want to see it." Lapis declared. "Yeah?" Steven said. "I want to stay here." Lapis clarified. "Here? Like here here?" Steven asked, with a slight giddiness.
"Yeah here here!" Lapis said with a smile. "Yes, hear, hear, everybody! Labradorite has returned!" Peridot smiled, Labradorite at her side. "What are we talking about?" Peridot and Labradorite spoke at the same time.
