37: You Must Be Lapis

As Peridot recounted their trip to the cluster, Labradorite was in the barn, resting. Surprisingly, she was placed right next to a sleeping Lapis.

Steven peaked into the barn, looking over the two sleeping blue gems, one looked like she was having a nightmare, the other was still, most likely unconscious, but she looked dead.

"I see you're worried about your friends." Garnet spoke from behind him, placing a hand on his curly hair. "Yeah...when I saw her in my dreams, it looked like she was fighting so hard to keep Malachite from escaping." Steven admitted looking down at the ground before looking up at Garnet.

"Lapis spent an unbearable amount of time fused with Jasper. The emotional and physical strain of that type of fusion, I couldn't imagine." Garnet grimaced at the thought. "She's gonna need alot of time to recover..." Garnet stayed silent for a moment.

"Come on, I'm dying to hear more about what happened underground." Garnet smiled making Steven chuckle emptily. "Okay." Steven says walking away from the entrance if the barn.

Night came fairly fast for the blue gems. One had awoken faster then the other, choosing to sit in the corner of the barn, watching the other Blue gem that had yet to wake up.

Lapis opened her eyes and looked around at her surroundings. Right, they Crystal gems saved her from Malachite.

Lapis got up and jumped as she locked eyes with Labradorite, whom was sitting in a corner. "Hi, you must be Lapis." Labradorite smiled, speaking quietly as she walked up to Lapis.

"Sorry, but who are you? You're not someone I recognize." Lapis asked, Labradorite's smile fell as she realized she had yet to introduce herself. "Sorry! I'm Labradorite!" Labradorite spoke almost excitedly as she stuck out her hand for Lapis to shake.

Lapis just stared at the hand extended to her, making Labradorite pull back, a bashful smile on her face. "Sorry, I'm just...happy to see another blue gem, uh you have wings, do you not?" Labradorite asked, tilting her head.

Lapis' eyes hardened as she formed her water wings. "You won't be happy for long." Lapis says, making Labradorite frown. "What do you mean?"

"I won't be staying for long." Lapis replied with a sigh as she looked up at the sky, ready to take off before a voice cut through the thick silence.

"Lapis, you're okay!" Steven smiled as he stood in the barns doorway. The two blue gems looked over at the boy. "Steven." The two gems spoke before looking at each other with a look of 'you know him?'.

"You're....leaving." Steven spoke, taking notice of Lapis' open wings.  "I have to, Steven." Lapis spoke as Steven approached. "I don't belong on earth, not with the Crystal gems. I never have.." Lapis muttered, looking away from the boy and narrowing her eyes.

There was a pause before Steven spoke up. "It's okay, I understand." Steven said finally. "I just wish we could have hung out more." Steven says, his eyes focused on the ground as Lapis turned to look at him once more.

"I feel like I only get to see you when something horrible's going on." Steven smiled aimlessly, Lapis' eyes softened.

"That's just how it is with me." Lapis said, walking away from the barn for a moment before stopping. "Steven... thank you." Lapis said before turning to face the boy again. "Goodbye, again." Lapis bidded the boy a farewell before taking off to the sky.

Labradorite sighed as she watched Lapis fly away. I guess that excitement really was short lived.

"Are you sure you want to stay?" Steven asked standing in the entrance of the barn as his father packed up his belongings in the van.

"You could always come back to the temple with us and live in the bathroom again." Peridot peaked her eye open at Steven, sitting on a tractor  with one of her legs on the steering wheel. Labradorite looked at Steven sitting on the tractors hood.

"No thanks. I have seen what goes on in there." "No thank you, me and Peri can share this space already here." Labradorite spoke at the same time as Peridot. Steven looked away.

"Besides, me and Labradorite have grown accustomed to this place."  Peridot said, looking up at the roof.

"And you should fix the hole you made with your giant robot." Labradorite commented, pointing to the hole made from Peridot's long gone robot. Steven hummed and said, "well have fun redecorating!"

"Well that's everything... and some. Steven, you ready to go home?" Greg asked, closing the van doors. "All seat belts are fastened!" Garnet called from  the passenger seat.

Steven walked over to the van. "Peridot and Labradorite says they're staying. " Steven says, carrying his bag. "Eh it's probably for the best. I don't think she would've fit in the van." Greg says.

"You guys go on ahead, I'll catch up with you on Lion." Steven said, making Greg slightly confused but he agreed nonetheless. "I'll see you in a bit." Greg said walking over to the driving side, hopping into his van and driving off. "See yaaa!" Steven called after the van. "Now where is that feline?"

"I'm going to take a flight, I'll see you Peri!" Labradorite called as she closed the barns doors. Labradorite summoned her wings and flew up into the air.

She hasn't done this in a while, has she? Scoping out the area for a moment,  she found a large tower, it was those things Steven told her about, those towers that held water, Labradorite thought.

Looking at the top of the tower more closely, she saw a speck of blue and a mix of black, pink, yellow and beige next to it.

Flying down slightly closer Labradorite could see Steven and... Lapis! She really didn't leave! this was great! Labradorite didn't want to interrupt whatever conversation the two were having so she landed on the opposite end of the tower and listened in.

"I can't go back to homeworld, and I can't stay here.." Lapis said, putting her head in between her knees. "Sure, you can." Steven spoke, turning to Lapis. "What?" Lapis asked looking over at the boy. "You can totally stay here." Steven repeated with more emotion.

"It doesn't have to be here here. You can live anywhere." Steven said with a bright smile. "You don't even have to stay in beach city, if you don't want to!" The boy says, suddenly getting an idea. "Ooh! You could live in surf city or sea city, Aqua town, bayburg. And that's just the places off the top of my head!" Steven says gleefully. "I can show you around."  Steven suggested, getting Lapis' attention.

"Really?" Lapis asked turning to the boy once more. "Yeah! We can find you a new place to live. I really only know the tri-state area, but my phone's got a global positioning system." Steven smiled pulling out his phone.

"Oh, uh... okay."  Lapis said standing from her spot. "Let's go look." Lapis smiled. "ready, Freddy?"
Steven asked with a smile. "My name's Lapis." Lapis simply responded. Steven hopped on Lapis' back ready to take off before a voice stops them.

"Wait!" Lapis and Steven looked back to see Labradorite frozen with anxiety. Why did she say that? Why did it get their attention?

"Oh! Labradorite you need anything?" Steven asked as Labradorite fiddled with her hands. "Uhm could- could I,uh,-" Labradorite stuttered, her cheeks heating with embarrassment every second her mouth was open.

"You wanna tag along?" Steven asked, saving Labradorite from further embarrassment. Labradorite shut her mouth and nodded, her wings already out and ready for take off. "Come on then!" Steven welcomed with a bright smile, ignoring a frowning Lapis.
