Chapter 4
Saturday, 09:26 am.
"Ah, just gonna kidnap you." He smiled at her devilishly.
Nya stared at him with wide eyes. "What?!" She yelled. She tried to open her door, but couldn't. Many images crossed her mind at once, questioning the intentions of the man next to her.
What if he wasn't that innocent boy she once called her best friend and had a crush on? Back then, he wouldn't have even been able to hurt a fly without getting scared about whether it had a family or not. What if he did have another, illegal job other than being a teacher and now that she was locked in his car together with-
It was when she heard hysterical laughter, that she looked at him again. Jay wiped away a stray tear, catching his breath. "You did not just believe that!" He exclaimed, suppressing a second wave of laughter. Then he unlocked the doors again and saw the relief in her eyes.
"What was that about?!" She crossed her arms, giving him a death stare.
He smiled. "Nothing, just giving you a taste of my broken humor. It's called acting."
Nya groaned. "On second thought, I'd rather stay home." She said as she turned away, putting her hand on the handle.
"Wait!" Jay suddenly got very anxious, watching her opening the door and climbing out. After she didn't react to him, he opened his door as well and got out of the car.
She was just about to cross the road again, when she felt a hand holding onto her own, dragging her backwards. She turned around to face a very worried Jay.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you mad. Please don't go back, I'll do-" He stopped mid-sentence when, this time, she began to laugh hysterically. Feeling relief course through his veins, he also began to nervously laugh a little.
"You're not the only one with 'acting skills'." She said after their laughter died down. After one last sigh, she took a look down to see their hands still in each other's.
Jay then also looked down and as his eyes widened, he quickly pulled his hand away, leaving hers longing for his.
Nya smiled, though. "We should get going now." She said, walking back towards the car. She opened the door and climbed inside, putting on her seatbelt.
He then sat down on his seat again, putting his seatbelt on as well. "I was thinking about eating some breakfast first, then we could take a walk in the park, I know a beautiful place near a lake where I saw swans. Swans! They're so beautiful. Anyways, then I had in mind to go to the movies last. What do you think?" He then looked at her, seeing her staring at him. He suddenly got very nervous. "I mean, we don't have to... if you d-don't want to."
"No, no. I think it's a perfect idea." Nya quickly confirmed, calming him down.
He nodded and started the engine.
The car ride was pleasant, with both of them telling the other one about things they liked and stuff they did in their free time. They also realized that they hadn't really changed that much about their personalities and habits, even if they hadn't had any contact for about four years.
Once the car seemed to slow down, Nya looked out of the window to see one of the finest restaurants in town. She turned to face him. "What are we doing here?" She raised an eyebrow.
While looking for a good parking spot, he answered. "We're gonna have some breakfast, duh."
"But... I would've been fine with McDonalds, to be honest. I don't need to eat here." She crossed her arms.
After having found a spot, Jay parked inside the white markings. "Nuh-uh, there's no going back now. Besides," He then looked at her. She could see a faint blush on his freckled cheeks. "I already booked us a table, so there's nothing you can do about it." He stuck out his tongue to her like a child.
She rolled her eyes. "But why here?" She looked back at the massive building, crossing her arms.
Jay unbuckled his seatbelt while taking his car keys out of the slot. "C'mon, you'll like it." Then he got out of the car while Nya unbuckled her seatbelt, still staring at the restaurant.
She had never eaten there before but from what she's heard, they are expensive. And she was sure that the amount of money she had with her wasn't going to be enough for anything. So she tried to come up with a plan to either change locations, order anything she can find that costed as much as she had with her, or not eat at all.
Though from the way she knew Jay, he wouldn't accept the last option.
Just as she was about to grab the handle of the car door, it was suddenly yanked open, startling her for a second. She looked up to see Jay smiling while reaching out his hand to her. Grabbing it, and feeling him squeeze her hand a bit, she got out of the car as well.
They walked up to the front desk as they were greeted by a worker. The male worker looked up at the two with a bored, almost tired looking expression on his face. "Name?"
"Uhh, Walker." Jay thought it was a bit rude of the person to not even say 'hi' or anything, but just shrugged it off, assuming he just had a bad day.
The worker looked down at his clipboard. "Jason Walker?" He slowly looked up to the young teacher.
"Yes." Jay simply answered.
Then, a young waitress came by and stopped in front of the two. She made a quick bow towards them, her golden bun slightly bending forwards. "Good morning, and welcome. I am Tanya, and I'll be your waitress for today. Now if you'll follow me, please, I'll lead you to your table."
Jay noticed how quiet Nya was and flashed her a smile. Then he turned back around to the young looking waitress and nodded.
The three passed quite a few tables, mostly occupied by old people, and finally sat down on their own one. Jay, being the gentleman he was, pushed Nya's chair for her, with her smiling at him.
"Here are your menus." The waitress handed them two menu books covered in black fake leather. "I will be back to take your orders in five minutes." Then she left.
Jay opened his book and started to look at the various meals. "So, what will you have?"
"I don't know, really." She said with a forced smile as she slowly opened her own book. Her eyes widened when she read over the prizes. "What about you?" She asked slowly, still gazing over the menu.
"Hmm," Jay flipped to the last page of his menu, his mouth turning into a small, excited smile. "I didn't know they served chicken nuggets here..." He said, thinking about how much he'd missed eating those.
Nya smiled at his childish behavior. Then she quickly gazed over the many meals, though she was only looking at their prizes. Everything seemed to be above her range, so she quickly turned the pages. When she read something that said '$19,25', she smiled automatically, though that didn't last long when she looked at what the dish actually was.
A salad.
A freaking salad.
It was not that Nya didn't like salads, but a small plate of some lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers etc. wasn't exactly how she wanted to have breakfast in a fancy restaurant. She'd probably have to go through the day hungry.
Just then, the waitress came back with a big smile, holding a clipboard and a pen. "So, what will it be for you two today?"
Jay looked up from the menu and smiled back. "I'd like to have the chicken nuggets, French Fries with mayonnaise and a large Coke, if that's okay." He finished.
If Nya was being honest, that's exactly what he could've ordered in McDonalds as well...
The waitress nodded, then turned to Nya. "And you, Miss?"
"Uhh," Nya started, taking a quick look at the menu again. "I'd like to have a Caesar salad, please." She awkwardly smiled.
Jay frowned. "A salad? That's what you're ordering?"
"Yeah." Nya looked at him.
Jay still frowned while turning towards the waitress. "Would you give us another five minutes, please?"
The waitress nodded understandingly and left the table.
"Jay," Nya said through gritted teeth. "what was that for?"
"There's no way that you're ordering a salad of all things." He stated and opened his menu, only to quickly closing it again. Then he met her slightly annoyed gaze, creasing his eyebrows a little. "You're not doing that because you think you need to lose weight, right? If so, I can guarantee that you l-look wonderful." He smiled, blushing slightly.
Nya's eyes widened a little bit, her cheeks flushing a bright pink color. She tried to avoid eye contact, but something wouldn't let her look away. His electric blue eyes were mesmerizing.
She cleared her throat quietly. "No, I- uhh... I'm fine with my body, actually." She then managed to look down, smiling. "But thanks for the... umm... compliment."
Jay blushed even more. "You're welcome." Then he remembered something. "But seriously, why would you just order a salad?" He frowned again, yet the blush was still there.
Nya sighed. "I didn't know we were going to a place this fancy, so I didn't bring enough money for this place and-"
"You know it's my treat, right?"
She glared at him. "And that's exactly what I didn't want to happen. I can take care of myself."
Jay smiled warmly. "And I don't doubt that. I just want to make up for everything, even if it's just paying for breakfast."
"I still won't accept you paying, I-"
"Please..?" He pouted, making puppy eyes.
Those goddamn puppy eyes he had always done whenever he wanted or needed something. And of course she couldn't resist those. After glaring for a little more, she caved in.
She sighed. "Fine, but just this one time." She glared again, hoping it would support her statement.
Though Jay inwardly said 'no', he nodded nonetheless. "So, what would you like to have?"
She didn't even bother to open the menu again. "I'll take whatever you're having."
He smiled happily, waving towards the waitress, making her come over to their table again. "What would you like to have now?" She said overly happily.
Nya looked at her. "Uhh, I'll take whatever he ordered instead of the salad, please." She tried to smile?
The waitress nodded and left again. After a rather very short time, maybe less than three minutes, the waitress came back with their dishes. "Here you go." She simply stated while she put the meals in front of the two. "Enjoy!" She beamed.
"Thanks!" Nya and Jay beamed back simultaneously. Then the waitress left once again, leaving the two alone.
They started eating their food and talked about some topics which randomly popped up in their heads. It didn't take that long for them to finish, but they still stayed seated, wanting to continue their little talk about what kind of pet they'd want in the future.
"Puppies are freaking adorable, but I think I'd be more of a kitten person." Nya said, taking a sip of her Coke.
"Oh my gosh, kittens are perfect!" Jay beamed. "I've always wanted to adopt one, but never got the chance to." He smiled to himself.
He did always want to own a cat so that he could have a little someone to take care of, but his job wasn't the most approving thing. He'd have to have a better job, or at least less hours of work, to be able to be a good cat-dad.
But hearing that Nya wanted to have a cat, a kitten, as well made his heart jump up and down for some reason. It got him excited. And it had never done that before for anyone else... weird.
"Yeah, me too. But Kai's always been against a pet, saying we have to 'take care of ourselves first'." She made some air signs with her pointer and middle fingers, adding a deeper voice for extra drama.
Jay laughed slightly. "I mean, he ain't wrong, though."
She fake glared at him, slowly putting her glass back down on the table. "Ha ha, you're so funny. I can't even control my laughter. Wow."
The young teacher smiled, taking another sip of his fresh, cold Coke, staring into her eyes.
Not knowing how to feel, Nya quickly thought of an excuse to collect her thoughts. "Gonna use the restroom, I'll be right back." She said while standing up.
He nodded, watching her walking all the way towards the restrooms. After she disappeared from his view, he let out a sigh.
She was the one. He was sure about that.
But did she feel the same?
He didn't know. He didn't know how to find out either.
But no matter how much he wanted to forget about it, the thought of her being his student was banging inside of his head like crazy. If she were to like him back though, he would definitely stop caring about it and just date her. It was his personal life after all, he was the one deciding who to be his partner.
He took another sip of his Coke, trying to figure out a way how to step up his game.
But it was still too early for that, he knew that. He had to wait. He'd been waiting for four years, what's a little more time anyway?
Back in the restrooms, Nya checked if anyone was in there first and when all the stalls were open, she let out a shaky breath. What was happening to her? She walked up to one of the porcelain sinks and held it with both hands as if her life depended on it. She took a look in the mirror, seeing her cheeks all red.
She couldn't be... Not him... Her teacher... Was she..? No. Yes? No. Maybe?
Feelings. The number one thing she hated to admit. Whether it was anger, sadness, or... love.
Nya loved her brother. She could freely say it, though she didn't really like saying it directly to him unless there was an important occasion.
She loved her best friend. As a friend, of course. It wasn't nearly as much as she loved her brother, but Skylor did have an important place in her heart.
Then she also loved her parents. More than anything. She just wished she could've told them before they passed away.
Now that she thought about it, Nya didn't really know how to categorize Jay. Sure, he was her teacher, but there was definitely more going on than a teacher-student situation. They were friends. Good friends. Unfortunately. Wait. What was she supposed to think?
She liked him... a lot. But was it enough to say that he was... you know... the one?
