Chapter 16

Sunday, 18:02 pm.

Nya sighed as she opened her Tupperware box and looked at her tuna sandwich inside. Just as she wanted to grab it, she realized her arms and hands were still dripping wet, so she turned around, grabbed the blue towel that was dangling down from the chair to her right, and dried off her hands. Then she took the sandwich out of the box and took a bite.

As she was eating, she looked around. The only source of light being right above the pool, Nya enjoyed the atmosphere a lot.

Her bare feet were turning colder the longer they were touching the ground, so she laid the towel she had just used on the ground and put her feet on it.

Her skin had formed light goosebumps as the feeling of still being in the water lingered in her system. She enjoyed that feeling a lot, actually.

It gave her a sense of comfort.

Taking another bite, she reached over to her bag and pulled out her phone, humming once she saw she hadn't received a single message.

Kai was currently supposed to be at Skylor's and probably wouldn't get back home until late in the night.

She didn't want to imagine what they had to be doing right now.

Jay was meeting his parents for the whole day, and said he would even stay the night until probably the early morning to get ready for Nya's big moment.

Speaking of which, the championships were going to start at eight in the morning, and the category of swimming was fifth in line. After fencing and before soccer.

And since Nya was suddenly hit with a pang of worries and anxiety, she needed to be in good shape.

Although her trainer had told her to take the time she had on the weekend to cool off, she insisted on continuing to train and practice. She just wanted everything to go as planned.

And since she had spent Saturday with Jay, she felt like she had to use Sunday as a practice day.

The couple had gone to the Mega Monster Amusement Park, just as Jay had promised they would a while ago. The look of fascination and adoration made his heart flutter as she pointed at every attraction she set her eyes on and almost begged him to get on them. To him, she was like a little girl on a Christmas morning. Just adorable.

Nya had a lot of fun with Jay, and wanted to go there for a second time, for sure. And Jay was down for that.

However, once she had gone back home, she immediately felt like she had wasted a good amount of hours she could have used to practice.

But spending time with Jay was always a good thing, so she wasn't upset.

Although she wanted to listen to John's advice on cooling off, she nevertheless had texted him and asked if she could possibly get the keys to the swimming pool.

John had only reluctantly agreed and given her the keys this morning. Nya had promised him to not let anyone else get inside, and to not lose the keys at all costs.

She had walked into the building at around eleven in the morning and ever since then, she only practiced and took some breaks if she found them necessary.

And as you may see, she strained herself. She strained herself a lot.

However, once she managed to swim forty-five minutes without feeling the urge of giving in, she felt victorious. And since that first time, she also managed to do it a second time.

No one knew of her being there, not even her brother. She didn't want him to make her stop and not practice any more than needed. Her brother only wanted what was best for her, but sometimes it was a bit too much for her to handle.

Same scenario went for Jay, too.

Nya finished her sandwich in silence as she looked at the water.

There was just something that fascinated her about it. She didn't know what it was, but it was there. She felt free whenever her body was met with the wet surface of the cool water. The urge to just... be around water 24/7 was certainly there.

Yet she didn't know why.

She sighed as she closed the Tupperware box again and stuffed it into her bag.

She looked at the clock on her phone. 18:29 pm. A smile spread across her face as she realized she had quite some time to swim some more tracks.

So she put her stuff together again, left it on one of the chairs, and made her way back towards the pool. She took her swimming goggles from the ground and put them on, the blueness in them immediately making her see everything a shade darker.

Nya positioned herself on top of the middle of the three blocks on the edge and counted to three before she dove into the water.

The cold feeling faded away quickly as her body got used to the old (and again new) surroundings. Feeling the water accept her like that was just great.

Nya stayed under water for a short while, just gliding through, before she was hit with the need for air in her lungs again. So she swam up to the surface and took a few breaths before she began to swim a track. The second one followed quickly. Then the third one, and so on.

She casually switched up her swimming technique to let certain parts of her body rest without her having to slow down, just like John had taught her to.

Nya quickly forgot any sense of timing as she just swam around for almost an hour now. Fifteen minutes unnecessary swimming was still something, though.

After exhaustion finally took over her body, the student couldn't help but swim up to the edge. She pushed herself up with the last bit of strength that was in her.

Once on the hard floor again, Nya laid limp on her back as her limbs were sprawled all over the place. She stared up at the ceiling, trying to regain her breath.

The girl sat upright when she felt like she had laid on the ground for as long as her body needed. Then she stood up and walked over to the chair to grab her-

Nya frowned when she couldn't see her bag right away. It was supposed to be on the chair, but oh well, maybe it was somewhere around it.

She grabbed the chair and moved it to the side a few times before she realized her bag wasn't anywhere around it either.

She could've sworn it was on the chair... Maybe on the other one? Nya looked across from where she was and saw the other chair just as empty as the one in front of her.

Nya's eyes widened as she realized her cellphone was in her bag. She walked up to one of the windows and looked outside, seeing it was already becoming dark.

What was the time?

She turned around and looked up at the huge clock on the wall, only to realize it showed it was 01:30 am/pm. However, it was certainly not what it should have been showing.

The battery must've died of that thing.

Nya only had one last place her things could have been; the changing rooms.

Although she could still exactly remember how her things were with her in the pool area, she still decided to take a look.

The student walked over to the doors, and pushed. Nothing. She pulled. Nothing. She frowned. She pushed again. Nothing. She pulled again. Still nothing.

"What?" She wondered out loud. The doors were 100% supposed to be open.

She never locked them. And her memories were certainly not deceiving her, she was sure of it.

She started to bang on the doors. "Hello? Is anyone here?" She yelled.

Maybe it was John? But taking her things and locking the doors was messed up, he'd never do that. What about the janitor of this place? He never knew that she'd be here on a Sunday, so it was possible. But her stuff was gone, and she assumed he wouldn't just take someone else's things.

Whoever it was, they had to have seen her in the water, right?

Nya continued her banging on the door for a few more minutes before she stopped, and her blood ran cold. She stared through the glass doors like she had seen a ghost, her skin was even a bit paler than usually.

Her eyes wide, she stared at the person on the other side in the far back. It was dark over there, but she could recognize the person who was holding out her bag in his hand for her to see.

As the person stepped closer towards her, Nya's thesis was stated as correctly; it was him.

The one and only person who she didn't want to see at the moment. Ever, actually.

He stopped right in front of the door, only the glass being in-between them. He wore a mischievous smile on his face as he leaned closer to the glass. "I said you'll be sorry."

"Open the goddamn door, Freddy!" Nya screamed, pushing the door with no success.

Freddy smirked as he walked away, and as Nya could see, out of the building.
