17. Gems POV: Romeo and Juliet is Lust not Love
I wait patiently for Leona to walk through her door. She doesn't have cable. She doesn't even have a TV.
Who doesn't have TV? Is she trying to live in a cave? Is this why she's always at my dorm, using my TV?
After one hour, I don't hear anything. Maybe he took her somewhere far? After two hours I smirk —they must not hate each other. After three hours I raise my eyebrows at my unanswered texts. They must really not hate each other.
But after four hours, it's now eleven, I start to get a little worried. We have school tomorrow.
I wouldn't be worried but I need her with me tomorrow. I have to dump Arius. I have to talk to Li. She had to be there to make sure there's no awkward silence.
I look back up at the clock. Two in the morning.
Holy mother of a rich kid. Someone tell that girl to get a watch.
The door handle jiggles and Leona's steps in.
She smiles at me before sliding down the door. Her shoulders shake, is she crying?
I sit next to her on the ground. "I take it, it was bad?"
She looks up, showing me a red face. "Are you kidding me? It was perfect!" She laughs until she can't breath. "He takes no time thinking over things, that's for sure."
I roll my eyes. Damn Leona, she can't just scare me like that. I could have had a heart attack. "What do you mean? Did you guys—"
She shake her head. "No! But we did get kicked out of the restaurant. He asked me to be his after highschool. I don't really have a choice, but if I did, I probably would have said yes anyways."
Well. That's interesting. She can go out with a guy for a night and get him to basically propose. I spend seven years with a guy and I can't even get him to bat an eyelash when I flirt with... anyone and everyone. "Congrats!" I say, bringing her into am awkward hug.
She smiles. "Thanks." She stands and helps me up. "Heard you hung out with Cor almost all of today."
My eyes widen. How did she know? Capri! That little fink. She needs to learn to shut her mouth. "What!? Did that damn canary sing it?" I snap.
Leona puts her hands in front of her for mock surrender. "Woah, woah. Who's the canary? When did a bird become involved in this?"
If I wasn't steaming with anger, I would have laughed. "Capri! Did she tell the whole world? Did she rat us out? Post it on social media, maybe?"
She better not come to school tomorrow, I have a couple thoughts that won't come out filtered.
Leona scrunches up her eyebrows. "What? No. Aris saw you guys at Liah's Bar." She shake her head and I calm down.
Phew. "Aris got into a bar?"
She nods. "That's where we went after our date. So how was your friendly get together with Cor? Nothing happened right? I'm not a snitch, but we're almost graduating and I don't think the elders will be to happy if they hear of this."
She's right. I won't say it out loud, but she is.
Nobody will be happy to hear this, even if we are just friends. Were seniors and even a hint of an imperfect couple will get us sent straight to the principal, or worse, the elders.
I shrug. "We were just catching up. He was asking me about Arius and we ordered food. Nothing more."
There really was nothing more. We are just, sadly, friends. Nothing more.
She smirks, her royal purple eyes seeing right through me. "Okay, but you wanted it to be more. Huh?"
Yes. "No. That would end me. Quite literally." It would end my life. Unless of course, we get off easy like Leo and Leona. "What happened? Between you and Leo?" I had been meaning to ask her.
She looks up to me "They—" Leona falls to three ground, gripping her head. Her feet pound into the ground. A small scream escape her lips. Get breathing becomes rapid and erratic.
I fumble for my phone. Is she having a seizure.
"No."she croaks, and limply reaches for my phone.
I pull it away easily. "You need a doctor! An ambulance! Someone!"
She rolls over onto her stomach and clutches it with one hand. With her other hand, she tries to get up.
I help get until she's standing up on two feet. "What was that?"
She looks over to me, tears running down her face. "A warning to me and Leo. I'm not allowed to be with him. He's bad." She almost sounds robotic. "Never to touch, never to hold." She stops crying and rubs her eyes. "Ask Leo, never me. I just... I need to... I'm going to bed. Ask Leo, but only if you really have to know."
I nod and help her sit down. That was about Leo?
Opening the front door, I give her a quick hug. "I will."
She kisses my forehead. "He'll tell you the truth, even if you don't want to hear it."
I shut the door behind me and walk back to my dorm. What does she mean even if I don't want to hear it?
***
My alarm clock sounds off, and I quickly hit snooze.
"Gem! Get up! You've hit snooze twelve times and counting!" Aquaria throws a pillow at me and slams on all the lights.
I shove the pillow over my face and try to fall back to sleep.
Aquaria groans and rips the covers off of my body. "Get up!"
I shrug. Who needs covers? They're overrated.
"You'll be late for school!" She yells.
I sit up, mad to be awoken. "All the more reason to sleep in!" I shove both legs over the side of my bed and stand.
I fumble around for my phone —it's always my first thought in the morning —and swipe through all the missed texts. Who texts at seven in the morning?
I sullenly pull up the four texts from Arius.
Heard what happened with Li.
Are you going through with it? Is Aquaria?
Who the hell gave him permission to do that?
Does he even need permission? Have you talked to Libby?
It's seven in the morning. I'm not responding yet.
I'm such a procrastinator.
How did he find out so fast? Ah! His roommates are Li and Minley. I don't think I could bare that much testosterone even if I did go talk to him right now.
I should probably call back, keep them from killing each other. I shake my head, it's too early for that.
Aquaria throws something on my bed. "What's that?" I hold up my straightener. Or what used to be my straightener. "Oh! My poor child! what happened!?" I see the bite marks dented in almost every spot. "Halo!" I yell.
Aquaria shake her head. "That wasn't Halo. That was Demon."
I look up at her, my face red. "And how would you know?"
She smirks. "I tried to wake you up this morning, even told you that Demon pulled the cord you leave hanging off the counter —which I should remind you, I asked you to put it up three times—and was chewing on your straightener. You just rolled over.
I throw my hands up in anger. "And you didn't try to stop him!"
She shakes her head. "Well if you think about it, I did try to help. I tried to wake you up and tell you... It's not my fault you fell back asleep."
I'm off to a very bad morning.
Demon bounds into the room, jumping onto my bed. "You're a dick, you know that?"
Aquaria laughs at me. "He's not going to respond to you."
I walk past her and into the bathroom. "I wasn't talking to, or about, the dog."
After a couple seconds, I hear the front door slam shut.
"Gem?! Are you up?" Leona calls from the living room.
I peek out of the bathroom. "Sadly."
My hair looks like a rat's nest. I don't even know if my brush will fix it.
I bend over and throw it up in a lazy bun.
My clothes look lazy to. A spaghetti strap, flannel, and black jeans. My go to outfit.
I still haven't bought a new white spaghetti strap after the party. Luckily, Aquaria has a bunch.
Demon comes running up to Leona, his tongue sticking out.
"And who's this little thing?"Leona bends down to pet the demon dog. He certainly earned his name.
"That, is Demon." Curious, Ghost comes up behind Leona and sniffs her lower back.
She helps in surprise. "You're going towards the restricted section little fella." She picks up both puppies and cuddles them.
Halo walks over, but keeps his distance.
"Why do you have so many?" Leona asks.
I wish their was a lightbulb above my head. My idea deserves a lightbulb. "Take Demon!" I yell.
She looks between Demon and Ghost. "Which one's Demon?"
I point to the dog with a red coat and black bottom.
She picks him up. "You're coming home with me." She smirks to herself. "You're coming to school with me."
No. The last thing we need today is Demon running amuck at school.
But with Leona, it's her way or... You really just want to take her way. The highway isn't safe if you don't.
"We're taking your car, then." I clarify. No way is a dog getting in my car.
***
She actually went through with it. Leona brought Demon to school.
We step out of her car— a Porsche 911, the perfect car for a Leo— and head into our class.
"Gem!" Someone yells behind me. "Gem wait up!"
I don't stop once I realize who is yelling.
"Gem!" Arius's hand clamps onto my arm. "Hey, we need to talk."
I shrug. "No. We don't need to talk. Things are over. I'm not going through the process of a toss up just for us to possibly stay together. Find Libby, go hang out with her."
He looks heartbroken, and I almost change my mind.
No. I need to hold my ground for once.
"Gem. How could you say that?" He let's go of my arm. "After everything we've been through? After I saved you that night— when Leo introduced to you to alcohol for the first time?"
"How can I say that?" I open up my mouth, and let my vocal cords do the rest. "We're almost adults now, Arius. Don't file for a toss up, it'll just make things more complicated."
A toss up would not be worth keeping Arius. I'll always love him, yes, but I've realized over the days that what I feel with Arius isn't what I want in a relationship.
I don't need someone like Arius who can't tell me the truth. Is the fact that he lied to us all about why he was at the hospital clouding my judgement? Probably. Do I care? No.
If he can't even tell me the truth now, how can I expect him to ever tell me the truth.
And he's supposed to be honest— I wonder if they got his sign wrong.
Leona drops Demon on the ground. He walks over to Arius and begins barking and growling.
"Demon, that's Arius." Leona bends down to soothe Demon. "I don't exactly like him either."
She never has liked Arius. I should have trusted her sooner.
"Fine. If that's what you want." He stalks off.
I see Aris stop Arius to see what happened. Arius just pushes him off and away.
Aris doesn't look to happy but shakes his head instead of starting something. He walks over to us and kisses Leona softly on the cheek.
Cute. Where's the barf bag?
"What happened?" He asks.
I puff out. " Arius is upset because reality hit him in the face."
His face forms an O. "You guys ended it? I thought it was love."
I look up to the sky. "No, this is Romeo and Juliet. We never loved each other, it was just affection and lust. It ended in flames because of other people."
Is he worth a toss up? He did save me all those months ago.
Was this Romeo and Juliet?
No. Me and Cor are Romeo and Juliet. A forbidden love (affection and lust, I refuse to believe they loved eachother) that will go south as soon as people find out I like him more than a friend.
But really it isn't even Romeo and Juliet, because Cor doesn't have feelings for me.
Neither does Arius. At least, Arius never proved he had feelings for me.
"I'll leave you two alone. I'm going to go find Aria. I'm bored and school doesn't sound like fun right now." I announce.
"Why leave us when we can come with?" Aris asks, taking Leona in his arms and following me.
Hey! I would like to than everyone for reading! 500 views! Just the other day it was 400. Thankyou!
Above or wherever your pictures are located, is the Porsche 911. Nice? I think so.
Google has officially become my bestfriend. And well... A lot of books on WP. I started a reading list titled Research 4 GAS. There's a lot of stuff about all of the signs if you're curious or just want to know where I get my info from.
I don't consider myself an expert and any tips will be gladly accepted.
Hope you had an amazing day and...
As always, stay happy, stay gold
