12. Gem's POV: Date Night

Song for the chapter- Tonight We Are Young by F.U.N

"You still wanna go?" Cor whispers over to me.

I give him a shy smile and nod. "If you still want to go."

He nods and shoots me a grin.

I've never been in Cor's car. In fact, I don't even know what kind of car it is.

I keep the squeals contained in me as we walk to his car.

In its own way, it works out that Arius doesn't come back until tomorrow. I'm more then glad he's okay, but I'm happy he won't be back today.

Cor grabs his keys and spins on his heels to look at me. "My car is messy so..." He trails off and walks to a Mazda Mazdaspeed3.

I smile at his car. "Mazdaspeed3? I pictured you with a different car."

He shrugs and unlocks the doors.

I open up the passenger side and a half filled water bottle falls out, along with paper and notebooks.

He frowns and runs over to my side to pick up the trash. He throws it in the back seat and smiles at me. "Anything on the ground is trash. Don't worry about stepping on it."

Cor grabs his phone off the floorboard and sighs. "Found my phone at least."

Giggling, I climb into the unorganized car and he shuts the door.

I know from a recent drive, Cor drives in silence. But I'm willing to try and change that. I've never liked quiet car rides.

"So what's your biggest fear?" I ask, deciding that small talk leads to big talk.

Cor turns the car and now the sun is directly in our faces, causing me to squint and pull down the mirror. "Death, probably. I'm scared of death. And that really sucks because death is inevitable." He pulls into the Cafe and parks his car. "What's yours?"

I shrug. "Maybe being too attached? I also can't watch The Grudge."

He laughs at the last part as we walk into the restaurant.

As soon as we walk in, we're met with a big smiled Capri tying her apron. "What can I get you?" She asks.

I squint up to read all options even though I end up buying the same thing every time. "Caramel Frappé extra caramel."

Cor gets some long-named drink that I can't remember.

Capri is having troubles too. "So no chocolate or chocolate?" She asks. "Why do you order such long things?"

Cor shrugs. "Barely any chocolate but I want chocolate."

Capri sighs and writes down his words.

The cafe smells like fresh brewed coffee and if summertime had a smell, it'd be like this.

Everything was overwhelming, but it was a good overwhelming.

We walk to our seats but before he could sit down, Cor walks back to Capri and whispers something in her ear. She groans but doesn't say anything back.

He looks at me intently, studying every detail of my face. "Why?" He asks, pulling out his chair and sitting.

I actually jump at the sound of his voice. I wasn't expecting him to talk. "Why what?"

Capri yells out, "Bonnie and Clyde."

I giggle as I figure out what he whispered in her ear.

He comes back and hands me my drink, tilting his head at me. He takes a sip of his coffee. "Why do you fear getting to attached?"

Oh. "I mean... I haven't gotten to attached to Arius, but if I had I would heartbroken right now. I didn't get attached to my parents, and if I had, what Mr. Anderson said to me in his office would have really hurt. Getting attached means pain." I conclude.

Most people laugh and say that's ridiculous, but Cor nods. "Makes sense. So you wouldn't ever get attached to me?" He gets it.

I shake my head. "I have an infatuation with you, and if I let myself get attached to you it will end in tears." Even if he is the epitome of perfection.

Cor smiles and starts laughing. "I'll take that as a challenge." He says.

I almost knock his coffee over in spite. "That wouldn't be wise. We're seniors. We're not not allowed to be together. Testing my not-so-true-to-the-point words isn't smart." I don't know what I wanted then. I didn't expect him to ever ask me out like he did.

I guess I just thought I was always harmlessly flirting.

Yet, here I am. Here we are.

Cor pops his knuckles. "Who said I'm wise?"

"Nobody. In fact I'm calling you an idio-"

Cor jumps out of his seat and grabs my arm. "We need to leave."

I slap his arm trying to get him to let go, but he doesn't seem to notice.

He points the cafe front doors where three men are talking to Capri. She points in our direction and we take off running.

Those suits are unmistakable. They work for the police station.

Capri called someone who works at the police? We didn't even do anything. Its completely okay for two friends to hang out at a cafe.

Unless she heard our conversation.

Damn it.

But how did they get here so fast? The police station is miles away.

Cor and I take a sharp corner, the police hot on our heels. "Cor, where do we go?"

He shushes me and we run into an ally.

But this isn't like any ally I've ever seen. In the middle it breaks into a sort of four way intersection.

Cor let's go of my hand and I hear a loud clank. I spin to see Cor jumping into a dumpster.

Nope. I think I'll take my chances with the police. But he pulls me in after him.

The lid closed quietly over us and we hide in darkness.

Capri has crossed a dangerous line.

"Remind me to ask Leona what happened when her and Leo were taken away." I whisper to Cor.

I hear shouting in the distance and hunker down more.

Cor almost bursts out laughing. "That's not what they came for."

I'm relieved. "Then why did they come?"

Cor laughs but I don't think anyone heard him. "Because I've been being hunted down by them."

That info doesn't help a whole lot. "Obviously, but why?"

He wipes something off my face and I blush even though this is not a romantic moment. "When I dropped Arius off at the hospital I refused to tell detectives valuable info."

Now my interests are peaked. "What kind of information?"

"Where the party was and who was attending it." He sighs and adds, "I didn't want anyone in trouble when they didn't do anything. Of course that was before I found out that he OD'd."

I don't know if that makes me feel better or worse. "I'll accept that challenge than."

He seemed confused for a second before he nods. He opens up the top of the trashcan and we climb out. "I knew you would." He grabs my hand and we're back to running out of the ally. "I know a really good place to eat where no one from our class works."

I follow him as we walk back to his car. In the distance I hear Capri yelling that we're back at the car, but I don't care. I'm having fun.
