As I walked through the door, I saw Angela at the front desk and granted her a nice smile. Unexpectedly, she gave me a saddened one that confused me, so I walked over to her.
"Is something wrong Angela?" I asked once I made it to her
"You aren't going to like this Ms. Robinson. Your brother, he's been spreading rumors about your position in the company. Take a look at this billboard posting he uploaded just this morning."
My nails dug themselves into the black satchel that hung by my waist as I looked on her computer.
There I was, by my brother, with a giant X crossed through my face, while he wore a crown, in front of our father's company.
I still have yet to call it his.
The picture came to me as a double meaning since our father didn't choose me to be the lead of the company and that I "held no value to it" since I am a woman. My family never believed in me due to their selfish values and I never got to tell my father off since he died over 3 years ago.
That skunk in the office though, his day had arrived.
"Thank you Angela, would you please call my dearest brother and tell him he has an unexpected interview coming up in a few that I sent him." I replied with a grin as I tapped her desk
"Um, alright." She answered politely even though I could sense her confusion and picked up the phone to call his office
As I walked to the elevator that was located inside the lobby, I pressed the top button, which was reserved for my brother and I since we were the only two with thumb print access.
If he thought his childish poster would stop me from kicking his ass and dethroning him one day, he was sadly mistaken. I'd have enough of the mockery and foolery that came with him, but the disrespect. That was something my father told me to never tolerate.
Especially from family.
When the elevator doors opened, his back was turned to me, so without a though, I pulled off my heel and chucked it to the back of his head.
It struck him directly.
Good, maybe that represented just a sliver of my anger.
"Assault, instantly fir-" He yelped and turned back to me with widened eyes
When he realized who it was though, he scoffed and readjusted his suit and rounded his desk.
"Why my dear sister, you surely know how to make an entrance. I'd have to talk with Angela about that later on." He welcomed me but muttered the last part to himself
"And you my dear brother surely know how to make an impression on the people who has done nothing but help you." I hissed and he smirked in response, crossing his arms
"Mind enlightening me?" He asked cockily making me take off my other heel to throw it at him
He ducked this time which infuriated me farther.
"Why the hell do you continue to make me look bad Hakeem?!" I asked angrily, picking up my heel
I've done nothing to him but be his partner in disguise and all he's done was make me look like a joke in the public eye. I was done being a pawn to his game and I was done being quiet about it. Not even that, he hasn't credited me for shit I've done for this company and I was sick of it.
This though was his last straw.
It didn't make it better that he continued to remind me that he was my oldest brother by two years and that our father decided it was best to give him the lead position over the company despite me being more suitable for it. Without him having to tell me, I knew he felt entitled to treat me the way he did.
"How am I making you look bad Navehya?" He questioned, rolling his eyes
The gesture made my blood boil and I wanted to rip his eyes out on the spot. How fucking dare he?
"We both know I should be in your position right now a-"
"Save it will you? I've heard this speech multiple times my dear sister, and I'm 100% sure it will be like the others. Why is it so hard for you to understand that dad left me the position because you would've cracked under pressure and crumbled this very building he worked his ass off for?" He gritted in my face as his eyes turned into slits
Okay, maybe dad wanted to meet him a little sooner than we expected.
With a blank mind, I stalked towards his desk and leaned to him with a more fierce look in my eyes. His response was one I expected, he leaned back farther into his chair with a scared expression as I looked at him through his soul. Right through his bullshit.
He knew not to tempt me as I held more of our father's anger. He knew once I get ticked off, there was no stopping me. Not until I was finished.
It seemed like he forgot that though.
"My dear brother why is it so hard to understand that our father only gave you this company because he knew that your sorry and spoiled ass would cry like a bitch once you saw your younger sister take all the spotlight and bring this company to a higher and more legal state of success than you ever could." I spat and inwardly laughed as his face turns from weary to shocked to sour
The triple reaction damn near made me laugh hysterically.
"And I'm sure he understood that, so why can't you?" I added snarkily, walking out his office to leave
Even though I was just about to clock in and start my shift as his personal assistant, his behavior made me want to return to my cozy mansion - that I bought myself - and sleep the day away in the queen bed - that I also bought myself - that I knew was ready for me.
I was fed up with him belittling me simply because I was a woman and younger than him. I was 22 and I've been in this industry longer than he has. The only reason that he had any of this was because our father drunkly appointed him to it.
It should've been me.
I helped him make those future plans that increased our stocks and shares. I helped him with where to look for business alliances. I helped him with the business deals when he needed a second opinion on them. All while my brother and mother sat on their asses, waiting for the money to start rolling in to buy all of the lavish values that littered our childhood home.
My mother and brother were insufficient to the business industry and they always will be.
Walking out the exit doors of the company, I nodded my head with a smile to Angela who was busy on the phone. Her frantic expression made me believe Hakeem really did mean it when he said he'd check her about informing me of his stunt. Instantly, I made the mental note to check on it later. Right now, I was too tired and hungry to deal with more of him and his bullshit.
The fresh air of New York grazed my face refreshingly but the busy streets of Manhattan quickly crowded me like a tsunami. The invasion of my personal space bittered my mood further, so I hurried to message Harry, my private chaffeaur, and told him I'm outside and ready to leave.
As I tretched forward, I heard clicking from every which way and grabbed the shades out of my purse to put them on. I was better in the public eye compared to my brother, but I knew after the shit he pulled, I would have questions practically thrown at me. I clenched my lips together tightly knowing that an answer was what they wanted. Being in this business only taught me if they wanted to make news about something, they would.
It was best to keep them wondering and on their toes.
I mentally prepared myself for their scrutiny as I rounded the corner, and people started to make a pathway for me as they realized the situation.
"Navehya Robinson of FR Inc. finally came out of hiding."
I pursed my lips as I looked for Harry more frantically and when I saw a dark haired male reporter push the microphone to his lips, I pursed my lips again, this time into a tighter line to keep myself quiet.
"Ms. Robinson! Ms. Robinson, over here! When do you think you'll be ready to date again? There's a lot of big bidders on you!"
Oh that was just revolting.
I turned my attention somewhere else, but my peace was short lived when I saw a red headed female reporter walking up to me with a tape recorder.
"Ms. Robinson, have you seen your brother's nasty comments about you?"
Ignore that one too.
Turning my head again, I ran into an older male reporter, one who I knew too well to actually poke fun at.
"Ms. Robinson, when will your brother make another move to highlight the company? Is there a negotiation approaching soon?"
None of your business, when will your hair grow back Gerald? It's looking a little thinner than the last time I saw you. Isn't that the real highlight?
Soon as the thought crept passed my temple, I heard a voice call from behind me and stopped in my tracks as I took in their every word.
"Ms. Robinson, is there a possibility you will move to Anderson Corporations with the way you're being mistreated? Maybe Mr. Anderson would treat you much better than your brother?"
Okay, that did it.
I craned my neck to see the young blonde male smirking his ass off as if he asked the question of the century and I swear if there weren't cameras surrounding me, documenting my every move, I would've punched him in the nose and ran off.
Stopping myself from smiling at the thought, I removed my shades and chuckled and everyone readjusted their cameras knowing they were finally going to get a response from me.
"Anderson Corporations and FR Inc. will never coexist in this world. Thank you." I replied shortly and turned around to walk once more
I completely dismissed the second part of his comment since my voice wasn't going to be wasted on the likes of men. Now there wasn't anything wrong with Cole Anderson, but he was the son of my father's biggest rivals.
I'll be damned if anything happened between us.
Suddenly seeing Harry broke me out of my rapid thoughts, and I sped walk to his vehicle once I see him pull up on the curb next to me. He got out and opened the door for me and I practically lunged myself into the seat. He closed the door after me, and I looked forward to the driving cars ahead of me, trying to calm my frantically beating heart.
I could still hear the clicking of cameras and the shouting of reporters asking me revolting and personal questions that revolved around my brother, Cole, the company, and myself. Yet, none of them exposed my contributions to the company, and that's what made me huff as Harry finally started the car to drive away.
It was outright sickening to accept and simply know that Manhattan expected so little from me without knowing the truth. Without knowing that I was the one who damn near created everything they were praising and have been praising for years.
It wasn't fair.
"You alright miss?" Harry asked, looking through the rearview mirror briefly as he steered through the freeway
I sighed but nodded my head in response not wanting to verbally lie and turned my head to the window, allowing my thoughts to overcome my rationality.
I disliked that I had to pretend that everything was fine when it came to Hakeem and him having everything he wanted when he wanted it. He didn't know a damn thing about this industry but making other bidders happy with the mention of weed and guns.
I shook my head as I finally realized we were almost near my mansion, and I tried to focus on myself relaxing in bed while eating ice cream, but I couldn't neglect the thoughts that were rushing through my mind at 80 miles per hour. I wanted to have things for myself, make a name for myself, but because Hakeem was the first person in mind at the simple mention of that building, I knew it was difficult, impossible even.
Scoffing, I accidentally made eye contact with Harry through the mirror and he sent a pained expression back to me.
Ugh, I absolutely despised sympathy.
Straightening up in my seat, I gave him a forced smile and turned back to look out the window in attempt to ignore the tug at my heart.
I couldn't cut everyone off on this earth just to get away from their judgement, but I could fire them so it would be easier to deal with.
The thought made my eyebrows furrow and I almost chuckled at my thoughts.
Yeah, that ice cream and television was probably the best bet right now.
