Esther and the Beavers

"It's a beaver." Lucy said. Dawn nodded. Peter walked towards the beaver and reached out his hand.

"Here, boy..." He said and clicked his tongue. "Here, boy..."

The beaver looked at its paw hand and then up to Peter. "Well I ain't going to smell it if that's what you want." It suddenly said to him. Dawn and her friends were surprised that the animal can speak like human. Behind him was a lioness. She smiled lightly.

"Don't mind Mr. Beaver." The lioness told Peter. "He can be like that sometimes." They were even more surprised that even a lioness could talk like them.

"Who are you?" Dawn asked her.

The lioness smiled and turned into a human girl. She had green eyes, pale skin with freckles framed with long black wavy hair fell to her waist. The girl was beautiful. "Esther." She introduced herself. "And this is my friend, Mr. Beaver."

"I know." Dawn smiled. "Lucy told me about you." Esther smiled again.

"I'm Dawn." She said to Esther. "Dawn Jameson."

Esther smiled. "How lovely, you three must be Susan, Peter, and Edmund." She turned to Edmund, who raised an eyebrow at the girl, cheeks turning bright red.

Susan raised her eyebrow. "How do you know our names, Esther?" She asked. Esther frowned at her.

"Magic, duh." Esther said in a rude manner. Susan frowned at her back. Peter turned to his sister.

"I don't think she likes you much." Peter whispered to her. Susan looked confused at her brother. "Why?" She asked. "She hasn't got to know me yet.."

Peter shrugged. "No idea." He said simply. Susan made a little 'hmph' and looked away from him.

The beaver looked at Lucy. "Lucy Pevensie?" He said to her.

"Y-yes..?" She said out of curiosity. Mr. Beaver handed Lucy as handkerchief that said 'L.P.' Lucy took the handkerchief.

"That's the hanky I gave to Mr..." Lucy began.

"Tumnus." Mr. Beaver cut her off. "He got it to me just before they took him." He added.

"Is he alright?" Lucy asked.

"Further in." Mr. Beaver simply answered. As he and Esther scurried off, Susan grabbed Peter by the arm and tried to reason with him.

"What are you doing?" She asked him.

"He said he knows the Faun." Peter answered.

"He's a beaver." Susan said. "He shouldn't be saying anything!"

"Is everything alright?" Esther and the beaver asked in unison.

"Yes." Peter answered. "We're just talking."

"That's better left for safer quarters." Mr. Beaver replied. The four children tilted their heads in confusion.

"He means the trees." Esther let them knew. And Lucy nodded. Peter shrugged and took Lucy and Dawn's hand and followed the beaver and Esther. The others joined in not knowing whether or not they trust them.

"Come on." He called out to the five children. "We don't want to be caught out here after nightfall."

They walked under a bridge and then they see the Dam in middle of a frozen pool. Smoke rose from the chimney of the dam.

"Ah, blimey!" Mr. Beaver said at last. "Looks like the old girl has got the kettle on. Nice cup o' Rosy Lee."

"It's lovely." Lucy said. The dam was quite big, but not as big as Mr. Tumnus' cave. Unlike the snow outside, it was warm and cozy.

"It looks very nice." Dawn nodded.

"It's merely a trifle." The beaver replied. "Still plenty to do. Ain't quite finished it yet. It'll look the business when it is, though." Then, they heard a woman's voice from the distance. It was another beaver, who happened to be Mr. Beaver's wife.

"Beaver, is that you?" She said hysterically. "I've been worried sick! If I find you've been out with Badger again I..." Mrs. Beaver then saw the five children and Esther. "Oh! Well, those aren't badgers. Oh, I never thought I'd live to see this day." She then turned to her husband. "Look at my fur. You couldn't give me ten minutes warning?"

"I'd have given a week if I thought it would've helped." Mr. Beaver chuckled. Mrs. Beaver smiled. She turned to the six people.

"Oh, come inside." She welcomed them. "and see if we can't get you some food, and some civilized company." Peter, Dawn, Susan, Edmund, Lucy and Esther walked into the dam.

"Now careful." Mr. Beaver warned. "Watch your step." Everyone got inside except Edmund, who was staring at the two hills.

"Enjoyin' the scenery, are we?" Mr. Beaver asked him. Edmund shook his head and went inside his dam. And they all settled by the dining table. Esther helped Mrs. Beaver with the soup while Dawn and Susan brought their cups of tea to the table. And both Esther and Mrs. Beaver brought some bowls of soup to their guests. "Now, help yourself, my darlings." Mrs. Beaver smiled. "Thank you." Lucy smiled back. The children started to eat their dinner.

"The soup is delicious." Dawn said. "What kind of soup is it?"

"Dumpling soup, dear." Mrs. Beaver answered. Lucy smiled. "It's lovely."

"Why, thank you." Mrs. Beaver said. Susan nodded. "Reminds me of mum's..." Dawn nodded. She sighed as she felt a little homesick. Esther bit her lip. "At least your mother is good...." She said sadly. Susan nodded. "Thanks." She replied. Esther sighed. "No problem...." As the children and the beavers finished their meal, they began to chat.

"Isn't there anything we can do to help Tumnus?" Peter asked. Mr. Beaver and Esther nodded. "Where did he go?" Dawn asked Mr. Beaver.

"They have taken him to the Witch's." He explained. "You know what they say. There's few that go through them gates that come out again."

"What do you mean?" Dawn asked again.

"My mother, the White Witch is very evil." Esther explained. "Once she has you, she turns you into a stone if you don't serve her." Dawn and Lucy gasped.

"Hopefully it doesn't happen to him..." She added in a whisper. "He?" Dawn whispered. "Who?"

"Edmund..." Esther whispered with a little sigh. Dawn and Lucy looked at each other confused.

"Fish and chips!" Mrs. Beaver called out as she brought the food to the table. She looked at Lucy who felt sad. "There is Hope, dear." She said sympathetically. "Lots of hope." Dawn placed her hand on Lucy's shoulder. She looked up to her and smiled slightly.

"Oh, yeah, there's a right bit more than hope!" Mr. Beaver spat out. "Aslan is on the move!" The children looked speechless and confused. Edmund, who was sitting further away from his siblings and Dawn, got up from the stairs. "Who's Aslan?" He asked.

"Who's Aslan?" Mr. Beaver laughed. "You cheeky little blighter!" His wife elbowed him. They looked at the five children's puzzled faces. "You don't know, do you?" He asked them.

"Well, we haven't exactly been here very long." Peter said.

"Well, he's only the king of the whole wood." Mr. Beaver explained. "The top geezer. The real King of Narnia!"

Esther gave him a smile. "For one, he's my father...." Edmund raised an eyebrow. "Your father?" He asked. Esther nodded. Edmund walked away and didn't say a word.

"So as in...you're the Princess of this land?" Dawn guessed. Esther nodded.

"Oh, your majesty. Why didn't I figure out earlier?" Dawn gasped. The Princess giggled at what she said. "No need for formalities." Esther smiled. "Just call me Esther." The children nodded.

"Anyways...He's been away for a long while." Mrs. Beaver added. "He's just got back!" Mr. Beaver exclaimed. "And he's waitin' for you near the Stone Table!"

"He's waiting for us?" Lucy looked stunned. Esther nodded. "He is." She told her.

"How do you know?" Dawn asked. Esther smiled. "Remember I can see the future." She said to the children. Dawn and the others nodded, looking seemingly interested.

"Look. Aslan's return, Tumnus' arrest, the secret police, it's all happening because of you!" Mr. Beaver told them. Dawn tilted her head, feeling puzzled by what he said.

"You're blaming us?" Susan defensively asked the beaver couple.

Mrs. Beaver shook her head. "No, no, dear. Thanking you." She said. They all raised an eyebrow.

"There's a prophecy." Mr. Beaver said. He then recited a Narnia rhymes. "When Adam's flesh and Adam's bone sits at Cair Paravel in throne, the evil time will be over and done."

"You know that doesn't rhyme." Susan told him.

"Yeah, I know it don't, but you're kinda missin' the point!" Mr. Beaver said.

"It has long been foretold that two Sons of Adam and three Daughters of Eve will help Princess Esther defeat the White Witch and restore peace to Narnia." Mrs. Beaver explained.

"And you think we're the ones?" Peter asked, looking confused. Mr. Beaver nodded. "Well you'd better be." He said real serious. "Cause Aslan's already fitted out an army."

"An army?" Lucy asked. Susan turned to her brother. "Our mums sent us away so we wouldn't get caught up in the war." She whispered. Peter then turned to the beavers. "I think you made a mistake.." he told them. "We're not heroes!"

"We're from Finchley!" Dawn said. The beavers and Esther looked at each other confused with their mouths agape, not knowing what or where Finchley is.

"Thank you for your hospitality." Susan said as she stood up from her seat. "But we really have to go."

"Oh, but...." Esther sighed, looking away sadly. "Narnia won't be the same anymore..."

"Without us?" Dawn asked. Esther nodded.

"No, you can't just leave." Mr. Beaver said.

"He's right." Lucy said. "We have to help Mr. Tumnus."

"It's out of our hands." Peter said, looking quite annoyed. "I'm sorry, but it's time the four of us were getting home. Ed?" He and his girlfriend turned around but Edmund wasn't there. "Ed?" Peter looked around the room and realized hat the door was slightly opened. He turned to the beavers. "I'm gonna kill him." He said crossly.

"You may not have to." Mr. Beaver said firmly. "Has Edmund been in Narnia before?"

~Time skip~

The children grabbed their coats and went out of the dam with Esther and Mr. Beaver. They hurried across the woods to find Edmund. "Hurry!" Peter shouted. The six friends headed up to the hill only to see an ice castle not very far from them. They could all see Edmund entering the castle gates.

"EDMUUNND!!" Lucy shouted out loud. But Mr. Beaver hushed her.

"Shhh! They'll hear you!" He warned her. Without hesitation, Esther turned into a bird and flew off to the castle.

Lucy gasped. "Esther!"

"Esther come back!" Dawn cried out. "Peter do something!" Peter ran after the bird, but Mr. Beaver pulled him back.

"Let me go!" Peter yelled, squirming in Mr. Beaver's paw.

"We can't just let him go!" Susan said.

"He's our brother!" Lucy said.

"And our friend!" Dawn added.

"He's the bait!" Mr. Beaver yelled. "The Witch wants all six of ya!"

"Why?" Peter asked.

"To stop the prophecy from coming true!" Mr. Beaver clarified the children. "To kill ya!"

The three children gasped and stared at each other horrified. Susan stepped up to Peter with a glare. "This is all your fault!" She said angrily.

"My fault?!" Peter said back with a scoff.

"None of this would've happened if you listened to me in the first place!" Susan yelled. Dawn sighed in frustration and stress. She hated all the arguments.

"Oh, so you knew this would happen." Peter said.

"I didn't know what would happen." Susan said. "Which is why we should leave it and go home!"

"STOP IT!!!" Dawn and Lucy yelled in unison. The two older siblings had stopped arguing and looked at Lucy and Dawn. "This isn't going to help Edmund." Lucy told them. Dawn nodded.

"She's right." Mr. Beaver said calmly. "Only Aslan can help your brother now." The children sighed.

"Well, I think I know why Edmund ran off." Dawn began to explain. "He only sought attention by misbehaving due to loneliness and pain because our dads left for war. Before my father left, he told me to stay strong and stay together! But all we ever did was coddling over each other and outcast Edmund. But we mostly talked to him whenever we're angry with him for his actions and behaviour." She then turned her gaze to Susan's. "It's not just 'Peter's' fault, Susan. It's all ours." Susan sighed sadly and nodded with understanding. "I suppose you're right on this, Dawn." Susan replied.

The children and Mr. Beaver turned their gaze towards the White Witch's castle. They were worried about what will happen to Edmund and the Princess. Now all they had left was hope, hoping that those duo survive from being kidnapped by the White Witch, but preparing for the worst to come.
