Chapter 3
My heart starts racing as the limo stops in front of Gotham Hall. Seven hundred people. My dad said he's expecting seven hundred people! I don't know if I can do this. But in I go anyway.
"Gotta find a new world" by Al Green plays in the background.
This place looks like an Oscars after party. Women in floor length ballgowns. The men in the most expensive three piece suits. I look nearly invisible in my black fit and flare dress. I don't mind it though. I'm not a fan of being the center of attention.
I do remember one thing I forgot in my room; the pearl necklace dad told me to wear. Oh well!
"Look at all these old folks!" Sarah says loudly as she nudges my arm. "I mean where's the party, huh? Not a cute guy or butt in sight! Where are all the young executives?"
I shrug in response.
"Well that guy is cute!"
"Which one?"
"Over there! Between the blonde and the brunette." I look but only see women crowded around him. "I've gotta go find my dad to take this dumb picture." Then I hear a voice. A voice that fills me with so much happiness. But why? This voice takes me straight back to my childhood. I shut my eyes as I go down memory lane. Gosh, who is that? I then open my eyes to once again look for dad so we can take this mandatory picture.
But the voice comes back and persists. This time louder and giving me goosebumps. I turn around trying to put a face to the voice once and for all. To my surprise all I see are the rears of three women standing beside the marble stairs in front him, whoever he is. But after I move to my left a bit, his figure finally emerges. . .
I gasp and blink twice to be sure I'm wide-awake. "Danny?" I mumble.
"Who?" Sarah asks.
"Nothing." I turn back to her voice. I'm gonna go get a drink.
"I'll go with you."
"No, that's fine. I can manage."
But I'm not getting a drink. I cross the entire ballroom, take the door on my left and head back to the entrance to check once more. It cannot be him. But the voice, the face. . .
My heart starts pounding faster with every step and the closer I get to the entrance, the louder I can hear the laughs of these women.
I'm now close enough to see. What? He's really back? My jaw drops at the sight of him, and I find my eyes blinking faster then they should.
Wow. I realize I haven't seen him in ten years! Daniel Sallis Huston is standing near the marble stairs surrounded by attentive ladies, sporting a tailor made black tux, and looking even better than I recall.
I don't remember him being so lean. So tall, well over six feet. But I do remember his stubbled jawline, his charismatic presence, and his rugged appearance. His smile hasn't changed either. As charming and rare as always.
Even his stare remains just as mysterious and piercing as always, and with those irresistible blue eyes, he's hard to forget. In fact, he's the only man I've ever met with the same eye color as mine.
His mid length hair has retained it's deep dark brown sheen, still so thick dense, and a bit wavy and wild. I remember how his girlfriends loved playing with it, brushing some strands to the side or behind.
His face healthy and glowing. His skin so tanned like dad's. Unlike mine. I've always been so fair. "Like Snow White." They would joke.
I feel my eyes water from staring for so long. My heart thundering, my stomach burning.
He really is back! That's why dad wanted me here. To surprise me, I think with a smile.
Mr. Salis Huston, although fifteen years younger than Dad, is his best friend, utmost confidant, and business partner. Oh, and he's also my Godfather.
